Extractions: Soon after moving to Chicago in 1927, he switched, from the Drums to piano. In these early years, Slack worked with Johnny Tobin's orch. In 1931, he moved to Los Angeles, CA, where he worked with bands led by Henry Halsted, Earl Burtnett, Archie Rosate and Lennie Hayton. During 1934-36, he worked with Ben Pollack's band, and from 1936-'39 was part of Jimmy Dorsey's band, where he worked alongside drummer Ray McKinley. Since Freddie had started his career as a drummer, there was a natural affinity between the two men. Between 1939-'41, he was the pianist for The Will Bradley - Ray McKinley Orchestra, so named because both men were partners in the new venture. Slack drew much public acclaim for his piano work on the band's famous recording of "Beat Me Daddy, Eight To The Bar", as well as on many other Bradley recordings. These helped launch a boogie-woogie fad. (Slack was also heard on some Big Joe Turner recordings during this time, and with another 'Blues Man' - "T Bone" Walker, later during Slack's Capitol Records days.) Early in 1941, Slack left the Bradley-McKinley band and his place was briefly taken by Bob Holt, from Worcester, MA., before being replaced by Billy Maxted.

Front 242 playing at Chicago's Congress Theatre! The venue last famous for having the plaster falling off the nicely designed ceilings during the Chemical Brothers Show in 1998. I go with some friends of mine, Sam and Tish, a very travel worthy couple who are as happy to get out of the local scene for a night as me! It was a breeze, we managed to get the pre-sale price at the door, do to some problems we had with ticket-bastards. It only saved us $15, but that Is enough o splurge on dinner. There is just the right amount of chill in the air, and the excitement is building. I have been in the wrong place/wrong time for about a decade making it impossible to catch the Belgian bringers of industrial dance-hall death. As a promoter/DJ sure I am burned out on the classics (except "Don't Crash" ) , but this is live! Oh the expectations. With dinner done, and a good ride on the CTA, we head over to the Congress, and It Is a breeze, take reflective ticket out of pocket, hand It to the girl, rip. We are In. No line? Yet lots of people, the show Is set up rave style, and the lobby area of this massive building Is hosting It's own dance party. The line to get a beer, shows us how long the outside line once was.

Extractions: In everything that is beautiful, here come the Changelings. Close your eyes and open both heart and soul to the transcendental music of the Changelings. Seductive, wondrous and varied, this quintet transports the hungry, romantic spirit beyond the toils of the day, beyond the walls of the desk, beyond the home and into tranquil bliss, an enchanted exploration of personal desires, needs and satisfying fantasy. Drifting as minstrels through the infamy of Atlanta, Georgia, Chandler Rentz, Regeana Morris, Nick Pagan, Damon Young and Paul Mercer conspire to charm and mystify you in blending Baroque ballads, modern ethereal enchantments and dark, mesmerizing, medieval incantations. Momentarily breaking the spell, we hear from this half somber, half smiling troupe concerning the imminent release of their fourth full-length CD and their plans for an upcoming tour, Summer 1999. Five musicians, all with bills, routine obligations, personal relationships and the occasional last minute surprise event manage to convene, compose, rehearse, perform and record. I am having a Brady Bunch moment here. In general, how does The Changelings win out over so many separate daily agendas?

Premiered at Canada's Open Ears Festival in May 2001, crosses boundaries between dance, music and video, bringing together some of Toronto's most innovative artists. In the 1920's composer Juliet Palmer 's grandmother played piano for silent films in the tiny New Zealand town of Takaka. Weaving together her grandmother's memories with the underwater world of Australian silent film star Annette Kellerman, features mezzo-soprano Vilma Vitols , dancer Susan Macpherson and pianist Nicole Bellamy. Choreographed and co-directed by Bill James , the work incorporates stunning underwater images by filmmaker Nick de Pencier alongside rare footage from Venus of the South Seas (1924). Artist Evlyn von Michalofski 's fantastical costumes of metal, plastic tubing and industrial felt transform the three women into high-tech mermaids, while Paul Mathiesen 's lighting structure evokes the high-diving aquarium of Kellerman's vaudeville routines.
