The Foundations main aim is to develop international links between musicians, particularly among the young. The theme of this concert took therefore the form of a journey through cultures, the common strand being the violin in its different guises. This journey from classical music to traditional music showed that these two styles are far from being mutually exclusive, on the contrary they truly enriched one another. It also demonstrated the fact that, through such a universal language as music, all men are brothers. It therefore became an invitation to travel implying at the same time openness and encounter. Not only an encounter between different genres and people, between the master and the pupil, but also between musicians and the public as thanks to the central and circular scene of the Royal Circus, the music was in the midst of the public and in so being distance and boundaries vanished. Sir Yehudi Menuhin opened the evening with a work by Bach and then welcomed Stephane Grappelli on stage. Hosts of the evening, they played together for a while and then introduced the younger to the violin. Two young Asian girls from the Yehudi Menuhin School performed Bartok duos. They were followed by Dr. L. Subramaniam, the "Indian Paganini" and poet as many have called him, who performed pieces from the classical Indian repertoire. He was joined by Volker Biesenbender; a former student of Sir Yehudi Menuhin, for a dialogue between two violins. The first half finished on the image of the journey, brought to life by the Gypsy Titi Winterstein Quintett.

He didn't seem to want to discuss it and merely nodded 'Yes' quickly, as if he was bored by the topic and instead wanted to discuss music." The talk will be highlighted by music and videos. Burton knew Menuhin well; they worked together on radio and television projects for forty years. Drawing on contemporary sources, unpublished family correspondence and interviews with Menuhin, Burton has bypassed the familiar image of the saint-like, philosophising violinist guru to create a compelling, multi-faceted portrait of an indisputably great musician who was also a complex human being. Born in New York of Russian Jewish immigrants, Menuhin demanded to play the violin when only four and proved prodigiously gifted. He gave his first solo recital aged eight and within five years had acquired international fame. Tickets priced £5 (£3 concessions) may be available on the door or can be booked in advance by contacting the University of Surrey Bookshop, tel. 01483 879169 or the Tourist Information Centre, Tunsgate, Guildford, tel. 01483 444334.

Menuhin is amazing, especially in the Ciaccona, so If you're into works for solo violin, I highly recomend this one. Shinyoung Kang said: I am disappointed about the fact that there was only one comment on this magnificent recording. I guess it doesn't do a justice to this superb recording. I cannot recommend this recording to a biginner whose ears are not used to old mono recording because the sound quality is no where near stereo/4D recordings.

Extractions: by Fernando Quintero In the never-ending quest for world peace, acclaimed violinist, conductor and humanitarian Yehudi Menuhin has found common ground in the universal language of music. Menuhin was honored March 14 for his distinguished contributions to international understanding at International House's 65th anniversary celebration and awards ceremony. Looking out into an audience of mostly students at a brief lecture before the award ceremony, Menuhin recalled his days as a youngster studying music in England. "I grew up, as you are growing up, with an understanding and curiosity of a variety of people and cultures," he said, while a steady rain played its own concerto outside the Home Room at International House. "The most important thing I've learned in my visits to the great schools of the worldBerkeley, Cambridge, Sorbonne, Harvard is that students are being taught to work together and appreciate one another. That gives me great hope." Formerly president of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Music Council, Menuhin served as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1992 and has received numerous global honors.

While Hephzibah was one of Yehudi's most constant musical partners, Yaltah took a separate path: she sometimes performed at the Bath festival, which Yehudi directed during the 1960s, and recorded one Mozart slow movement with him, but she also made an independent career in the United States.

Extractions: (violinist, born April 22, 1916, New York, New York; died March 12, 1999) Yehudi Menuhin's first solo red-letter day was November 25, 1927, when, at the age of 11, he electrified Carnegie Hall with his interpretation of the Beethoven Violin Concerto. That historic appearance with the New York Symphony, under Fritz Busch, launched an already promising career that continued to make history for six decades. Reviewing Menuhin's Carnegie Hall debut, the New York Times stated: "It seems ridiculous to say that he showed a mature conception of Beethoven's Concerto, but that is the fact. When the bow touched the strings, it was evident that an exceptional musical intelligence and sensibility were behind the performance." When young Menuhin followed that dazzling success with a solo recital at Carnegie Hall a few weeks later, a police detail was called out to keep the overflowing crowd under control. The distinguished violinist and conductor had given his first public performance as a soloist playing the violin at age seven with the San Francisco Orchestra, under the baton of Alfred Hertz, two years after starting to take violin lessons with Sigmund Anker, who specialized in teaching child prodigies.

Stein (1955) provided a hint in one of the sample stories that he presents in his manual. In it a female subject ends her story with the question, "Was it deliberately made to look like Yehudi Menuhin?" (p. 3) Later Holt (1978) identified the picture as a "Drawing by Christiana D. Morgan, after a photograph of Yehudi Menuhin as a child." (p. 80) When I wrote Lord Menuhin to ask him about the picture he was kind enough to reply with his own TAT story: Actually, I was gazing in my usual state of being half absent in my own world and half in the present. I have usually been able to "retire" in this way. I was also thinking that my life was tied up with the instrument and would I do it justice? His relationship with the great German conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, despised after 1945 as being the 'Nazi conductor' , is a long and troublesome story to which we shall return later. Suffice to say here that the relationship raised the hackles of zealous Jews everywhere, and made a visit to the new state of Israel virtually impossible for some years . Even as late as 1957, when Yehudi insisted on playing the Bloch Violin Concerto with the New York Philharmonic as a tribute to that 'Old Testament prophet' of his childhood, who was by now neglected and dying, the taunt of anti-Semitism still hung in the air as a result of Yehudi's supposed 'collaboration' with ex-Nazis. So, while it would be quite wrong to accuse Yehudi here of naivety in the ways of the world, his simple honesty is often interpreted in that way. 'The problem is,' his second wife told me, 'that Yehudi hasn't got a wall to back against. He was not taught to believe in evil, so he doesn't. Which is nice for him, but not so easy for the rest who have to keep the evil away from him. It's not easy living with someone who never suspects, who never believes that people may be asking for favours with ulterior motives. Anybody can push him, and he just disappears into the distance. 'From the beginning, his parents taught him to follow a distant light. So he doesn't want shadows or motes to get in the way,' she told me. 'Or if they do, he simply shuts his eyes and goes into a dive.' And so, following this distant light, the young Yehudi began to concern himself with events beyond family, beyond day-to-day relationships, events that were - in his eldest son's words - 'cosmic
