The Noise Rating Index is a partially-objective measurement of pager and handphone blasts, 9pm and 10pm watch beeps, coughing-during-the-pianissimo-bits, intra-audience conversation and other mind-bogglingly inept noises emitted in the concert hall during actual performance of music. It is measured on a scale of to 5, in increasing annoyance. by Benjamin Chee Not too long ago, we were bemoaning a conspicuous lack of classical chamber performances in Singapore. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra's efforts in this respect - interspersing three chamber concerts over a full season - is a laudatory step, albeit their focus still remains with orchestral repertoire.

In the spring, summer, and fall, he both runs and cycles. In the winter and spring, he is an avid skier - both alpine and cross country. When time permits, he is active on the amateur radio frequency (ham) bands with the call letters KA7M. Over the past 34 years, Dr. Lefohn's research has involved the development of adjustment procedure (i.e., rollback) models for assessing alternative scenarios for the United States and Canadian air pollution rulemaking processes; the evaluation and assessment of ambient air quality standards, reference levels, and critical levels for several national and international governments; the analysis of air quality data for developing exposure-response mathematical relationships for assessing the effects of air pollutants on vegetation; the development of exposure/dose-response relationships describing the effects of ozone and sulfur dioxide on vegetation; the evaluation of the statistical methodology associated with epidemiological studies relating air pollution to human health effects; the evaluation of alternative forms and levels of human-health standards; the characterization of European and North American air quality and wet deposition data for the purpose of assessing possible reasons for forest decline; the development of field surveys to assess the effects of sulfur dioxide on agricultural crops; and the analysis of acidic deposition wetfall and effects data to better assess the potential for biological effects.

Extractions: Myrna Loy Center Mozart's Sonata in E minor, K.304 was one of two sonatas for violin and piano written in Paris during the summer of 1778. The choice of key is an unusual one for Mozart, and this compact two-movement work is one of a singularly tense eloquence, wherein the urgency of the sonata's first movement is contrasted by a stylized menuet of particular beauty. Douglas Lilburn's sole Sonata for Violin and Piano was written in 1950 and given its first performance that same year by violinist Ruth Pearl and pianist Frederick Page. The sonata evolves in one continuous movement, from the B minor gravity of the initial molto moderato through the highly energised allegro that carries most of the work's musical argument. The work's highly-charged drama is finally assuaged in a moving coda built around the initial moderato material. Today's performance is a tribute to the father-figure of New Zealand composers in this year of his death. Dvorak's Romance in F minor has long been a concert favorite, with its haunting Slavonic melancholy and instrumental richness. The work however, was originally conceived as the slow movement of a String Quartet in F minor, from 1873, which the composer never heard performed in his lifetime. In 1877 he revisited this andantino, recasting it in its present form for violin and piano, and later expanding its palette still further, as a work for violin and orchestra.
