Extractions: Nimoy, who portrayed the stoic Vulcan in the Star Trek TV series and movies, will be narrating the Reno Chamber Orchestra 's performance of Igor Stravinsky's L'histoire du Soldat The Soldier's Tale ). The piece, composed for seven instrumentalists and a narrator, is a parody about a soldier's misadventures with the devil and conveys an irony of wanting the world without making tough choices. In this particular piece, Stravinsky treats the voice as another instrument. Nimoy's voice is the perfect match, according to Scott Faulkner , RCO's artistic operations manager. Faulkner said the RCO was interested in using a celebrity narrator for this piece. Since Nimoy has ties to the area as a seasonal resident of Lake Tahoe, the orchestra decided to invite him to participate in the performance. Faulkner sent a proposal to Nimoy's management in August, and much to the RCO's pleasure, Nimoy accepted the invitation. "We're very excited about this opportunity," Faulkner said.

But what the small wave of Russian -born musicians have brought with them is immeasurable. Starting in the late 1970s, picking up speed around 1990, this mini- Russian Revolution has brought about a dozen high-profile players who have made a tremendous difference in a big cross section of local music groups. They play in the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Northwest Sinfonietta and other professional orchestras. They play in important chamber ensembles, from the Seattle Chamber Players and Music of Remembrance to the Odeon String Quartet. They play in and conduct community symphony orchestras. And when there isn't an existing ensemble that fulfills their musical vision, they create one: the internationally renowned Bridge Ensemble, the Seattle Violin Virtuosi, the Seattle Violin Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra, the Khorovod choral ensemble. And they teach. In private studios, in music schools, they and some of their spouses (usually also

But curiosity got the best of me years ago - is there other violin & Orchestra works by this obviously gifted composer? Then recently I found this marvelous Two CD collection that not only contained his three Violin Concertos; but also his charming "Scottish Fantasy" ; and his under-recorded, yet sweetly-satisfying "Serenade for Violin and Orchestra" (a flowing five movement work, guaranteed to melt the coldest of hearts). All these works were written with a similar romantic flavor of his first violin concerto. And performed by one of the most talented violinists of the twentieth century, Salatore Accardo. He along with Gewandhausorchester, conducted by Kurt Masur produce this wonderful musical dedication to Max Bruch. A must-have set for those who want more than Bruch's first Violin concerto. ...BC

Svendsen's student quartet of 1865 makes its CD debut here, coupled with the large-scale, quasi-symphonic octet of the following year. The quartet's adventurous, Wagnerian harmonies excited the conservative German critics (Svendsen was studying under Reinecke in Leipzig). Today, we just enjoy a well-crafted piece of music in the central European tradition: unlike his compatriot Grieg, Svendsen did not use the Norwegian folk style in most of his works. Nearly twice the quartet's length, the octet offers a dazzling array of bold harmonies and melodic and rhythmic ideas in a work of almost orchestral tonal amplitude. Kontra Quartet et al. BIS CD 753 (Sweden) VAGN HOLMBOE (1909-1996): Chamber Concerto No. 7 for Oboe and Chamber Orchestra, Op. 37, Chamber Concerto No. 8 for Orchestra, Op. 38 "Sinfonia concertante", Chamber Concerto No. 9 for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, Op. 39. This amazing series of instantly appealing works continues with three works written between 1944-46. Luminous, finely woven, with clear textures, these pieces provide a wealth of delight for both the mind and the ear, especially the wonderful oboe concerto with its mood shifts from calm stillness to dancing gaiety and the long, variation movement of Concerto No. 8 whose inspiration must have been Nielsen's Chaconne for piano. He presently studies with Dorothy DeLay and Itzhak Perlman at the Juilliard School. His principal teachers include Hyo Kang and Abram Shtern. He made his debut at the age of nine when he performed the Bruch Concerto in G minor with the Redlands Symphony (California). Our 1998 IMK winner, 19 year-old cellist Denise Djokic was recently honored by the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank. The Instrument Bank acquires through donations and loans quality instruments to be used by established or gifted young Canadian musicians to help further their international careers. The 1696 Bonjour Stradivari cello has been awarded to Denise for a two-year loan. The Bonjour Stradivari cello, made by Antonio Stradivari ca. 1696, is named after an amateur 19th century Parisian cellist, Abel Bonjour, who owned it until his death sometime after 1885. More recently, it was owned by Martin Lovett of the celebrated Amadeus Quartet. The cello is valued at an estimated $4 million. Denise previously won the two-year loan of a Gagliano cello in an Instrument Bank competition in July 1999. Congratulations!
