Extractions: Music of Remembrance chamber series premieres Camp Songs Melinda Bargreen Now in its fourth year, the Music of Remembrance concert series has amassed an impressive record of performances with some of the regions finest musicians and repertoire that is always thought-provoking. If the series, headed by artistic director Mina Miller, did nothing more than present works of composers who died in the Holocaust, that would be a worthy aim but it does considerably more. On Sunday, for example, the series presented the world premiere of the new Camp Songs by Paul Schoenfield, a composer whose jazzy and energetic Café Music has already become a contemporary classic. When Schoenfield was commissioned to write Camp Songs, he and Miller examined death-camp poems found in the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., as likely texts, and the composer decided to set five poems by Aleksander Kulisiewicz (a non-Jewish survivor of the camps, imprisoned for his politics). These are not mournful poems, but angry, sarcastic ones that resonate with mockery and bitter wit. Schoenfield has set them to high-energy music that pulls together ethnic, classical and jazz elements, sometimes recalling Mahlers songs, Kurt Weills ballads and klezmer traditions. Its hard to imagine better interpreters than baritone Erich Parce and mezzo-soprano Julie Mirel, who perform alternate songs and unite in the finale, all with considerable drama and exuberance. The instrumental ensemble (violinist Misha Schmidt, cellist David Tonkonogui, clarinetist Laura DeLuca, double bass Jonathan Green and Miller at the piano) is an equal partner with the soloists; De Lucas superb clarinet really functions as a third human voice.

Extractions: Current Reno Weather Music Reviews Jan 14, 2001 - The Reno Chamber Orchestra's Missed Opportunity By Jack Neal With an abundance of riches on its plate for Saturday night's (1/13/2001) Reno Chamber Orchestra concert, the orchestra managed only a modicum of brilliance in an evening that should have been stunning for its interest and excellence. Opening with Rossini's overture to "The Barber of Seville," followed by Paganini's musically trite but histrionically dazzling Violin Concerto No. 1 as spectacularly played by violinist Misha Keylin, then closing with Stravinsky's "The Soldier's Tale" as narrated by actor Leonard Nimoy of "Star Trek" notoriety, the program was one of the most enticing ever presented by the RCO. Add to that the impressive talents of the young American conductor Apo Hsu and how can one miss? Musical chairs is a great game for kids, but a first-rate professional orchestra needs enough stability of personnel so that players can get used to who's doing what, when and where. When several key players are missing, one-time concertmaster Philip Ruder for one - a big miss - and principal clarinetist David Ehrke for another - another big miss, the sophistication of the symphonic sound is left in a disarray it's difficult for a guest conductor (Ms. Hsu) to glue together in a few short rehearsals. It's particularly distressing to find the orchestra dominated as much as it is by one family, the Lenz family, its spouses, offspring, friends and associates who do the hiring for local concerts when Reno orchestras are shopping around for temporary (or permanent) replacements.
