Extractions: "Structures, not strictures" is Kennedy's description of the unusual Cornell Concert Series program he will present Monday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. in Bailey Hall. Juxtaposing works by Bach, Bartok and his own arrangement of songs by rock icon Jimi Hendrix, the British violinist with the single moniker will perform both as soloist and with the "Kennedy Collective," an ensemble comprising two guitarists, two cellists, double bass, flute and oboe. "As is the case with most musicians' recitals, I have chosen works which inspire me," notes Kennedy, "and I hope, mainly through my interpretations, but also because of the context in which I have placed all these works, to be able to shed new light on them. This is, after all, surely the function of an interpreting artist." Tickets for the concert at $25, $22, $19 and $16 for the general public and $15, $13, $11.50 and $9.50 for students and are on sale at the Lincoln Hall Box Office, 105 Lincoln Hall, 255-5144. Tickets may also be ordered via the Cornell Concert Series web site at http://www.arts.cornell.edu/ccs

Extractions: This music genius is a patron of one of the orchestras that I am in, here at Oxford, called the Oxford University Chamber Orchestra. He graced us with his presence, in March 2001, and came to play the Elgar Violin Concerto with us at the Sheldonian. One word, only... AWESOME. Despite his crude and crass and somewhat shocking personality, this man is brilliant. I felt honored and so lucky to have met him and worked with him. The following bio was stolen from the emi classics website... For nearly twenty years, Kennedy has been acknowledged as one of the world's leading violin virtuosos and is, without doubt, one of the most important violinists Britain has ever produced. His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. Throughout his career, Kennedy has undertaken major tours throughout Europe, Australia, Canada, the Far East, New Zealand, the UK and the USA, performing with the world's major orchestras and conductors; he has made appearances at the most important festivals in Europe and the United States. Major debuts include his 1977 London Royal Festival Hall appearance, performing Mendelssohns Violin Concerto, with the Philharmonia under Riccardo Muti, his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1980 and his New York orchestral debut in 1987.

Extractions: EMI, the promoters of Nigel's latest CD "Kennedy Plays Bach", wanted to do a launch in the basement of Grace Bros' Sydney store. Naturally, they wanted the best possible sound and decided to use a pair of DPA4011 cardioids in typical recording mode - about a metre above the instrument. However this arrangement was not going to be suitable to feed a huge sound reinforcement system to woo the lunch time crowds into the store. The DPA4060 was Bob's preferred choice for the job but some smooth talking was needed to convince Kennedy to allow it to be attached directly to the violin. As it turned out, Kennedy convinced himself that the 4060s should be used after hearing a recording of one of the rehearsal sessions. Nigel was so impressed with the sound that he has since bought his own 4060 mics and booked Bob to engineer some gigs during a European tour later in the year.

His virtuosic technique, unique talent and popular appeal have brought fresh perspectives to both the classical and contemporary repertoire. We associate Kennedy with Bach as often as we see him with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, but here he is with both, and he is found at his most urgently charismatic, backed by the superb strings of the BPO. Kennedy has a positive, often robust view of Bach, and approaches the finales at breathtakingly fast speeds. He has clearly undertaken some meticulous research as his playing reveals a scrupulous attention to details that are often glossed over.
