WOUB Online - CD Corner Concerto is one of the two 20th century American concertos included on the latestSony Classical release by the young and talented violinist hilary hahn. http://woub.org/classical/cd_corner.html
Extractions: This month, we decided to look at two very different recordings by two very different female violinists. Late last year, the Nonesuch label released a collaborative effort by Nadja Salerno-Sonenberg and the sibling Brazilian guitar duo, Sergio and Odair Assad. The CD features flamenco music, a medley of traditional Hungarian folk tunes, and gypsy music from Transylvania. Gypsy music has always had a great influence on violin repertoire as it nicely showcases the virtuosity of the player. Violinist Salerno-Sonnenberg shines on this project. In addition to Assad's compositions and his arrangements of traditional Eastern European melodies, Gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt's "Nuages," is included on the disc. This is an intimate, stunning, successful fusion of classical, folk and world music and should appeal to listeners who enjoy crossover ventures. Edgar Meyer's name is synonymous with classical crossover success. He has recently collaborated with Joshua Bell, Mark O'Connor, and Yo-Yo Ma on recordings that include his original compositions. Meyer's writing and playing skills reflect his understanding of both Classical and folk idioms. The premiere recording of his Violin Concerto is one of the two 20th century American concertos included on the latest Sony Classical release by the young and talented violinist Hilary Hahn. Meyer penned this composition expressly for Ms. Hahn, for whom they say nothing is too difficult.
The Art Of The Violin, Soundpost Online 7 Spring'02 death of Yehudi Menuhin as the passing of the last Great violinist of the with subtitleson the DVD) Itzhak Perlman, Ida Haendel, and hilary hahn, among others http://www.soundpostonline.com/archive/spring2002/page2.htm
Extractions: The Devil's Instrument Transcending the Violin The film is not without flaw: The opening narrative refers to the death of Yehudi Menuhin as the passing of the last Great Violinist of the 20th Century. But Isaac Stern outlived Menuhin and certainly couldnt be considered less a luminary than Menuhin. The film includes interviews with Ivry Gitlis (In French with subtitles on the DVD) Itzhak Perlman, Ida Haendel, and Hilary Hahn, among others, spliced into the performances of the various artists. The interviews with Gitlis and Haendel are interesting, with Perlman less so but entertaining nonetheless. The interview with Hilary Hahn feels empty and the video would be more successful if her comments were left out. Strangely, of the artists interviewed for the video only Haendel, Gitlis and Korcia are shown playing. Perlman should have been included and Hilary Hahn would have represented herself far better playing her violin than in commentary. Despite these few warts, the Art of the Violin is a wonderfully entertaining two hours, and a must-see for any violinist or violin lover.

Extractions: Press Democrat Santa Rosa, California Monday, April 21, 1997 Violinist Hahn Steals Already Good Show by Diane Peterson Staff Writer The Santa Rosa Symphony under Jeffrey Kahane performed a well-balanced concert program Saturday night - perhaps the most consistently satisfying so far this season. But it was a surprise encore by violinist Hilary Hahn that inadvertently stole the show. After her fluid and flawless performance of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Hahn graciously offered up a Largo movement from an an unaccompanied sonata by J.S. Bach. This simple yet profound piece by one of the oldest masters played so expressively and intuitively by a mere 17-year-old, was breathtakingly exquisite. Hahn bared her soul and became one with the instrument. To paraphrase poet T. S. Eliot, the dancer became the dance. (To those who would like to hear Hahn play more Bach, her first CD featuring his unaccompanied sonatas and partitas will be released in August.) The encore was just one of many pleasant surprises of the evening. A few days before the concert, a friend expressed doubts about whether she would enjoy the program.

Extractions: [49:41] full-price by Chia Han-Leon This was my first encounter with Hilary Hahn's musicianship (though by the time this review is published, I would have seen her 'live' in Singapore on Nov 18 ). What strikes one immediately is her absolutely mastery of her instrument, which multiplies and graces her maturity of expression. Graces I say, because there is no hint of something ... shall we say, "arrogant" about this musicianship. It is not glorified, yet is glorious. It glows with beauty, but is presented with humility. Maybe it is the music, but somehow, I feel Ms Hahn has a big part in it. It is not just a matter of articulation, where the 20-year-old is effortlessly musical and, well - perfect;there is, at least on my first few impressions going through this disc, that quietly ecstatic vibrato. She has a wonderful instrumental voice, which sings so beautifully and tingles so naturally in the gorgeous Andante . She bites into her entries without any ugly cracks - indeed, her playing is glowingly smooth.
Extractions: "Since I didn't go out and perform a lot when I was really young, I had time to stay in school and keep learning new things, extend my repertoire and really polish what I was working on," she says. "I never felt like a prodigy. I never felt like youth played into the concerts that I gave because everything was so well-paced and I would only do something when I felt ready for it and I was completely prepared for it."
