Extractions: AIM practice ribbon-cutting honors On Oct. 15, faculty and staff from the Health Sciences and friends from the community gathered to celebrate the opening of the Associates in Internal Medicine (AIM) practice on the first floor of the Berrie Pavilion at 1150 St. Nicholas Ave. The AIM practice provides primary care for residents of Washington Heights/Inwood and Northern Harlem. For the past 21 years the group practice has had a physical presence in the neighborhood as a place where members of the community can secure lasting relationships with personal primary care physicians. The staff of AIM and the general medicine faculty have been involved in projects directed at enhancing the health of the community. AIM logs more than 55,000 patient visits per year, 55 percent from patients over age 65. Although the AIM practice will maintain its original practice site in the Vanderbilt Building, the new primary care center in the Berrie Pavilion will cater to the needs of young families with a focus on preventive medicine. Services provided for younger patients include asthma services, routine gynecological and medical exams, diabetes management seminars, HIV testing, social work services, anti-coagulation programs, and nutrition counseling. The new practice offers patients a warm, welcoming atmosphere with state-of-the-art exam rooms. Each exam room possesses a networked computer for electronic charting. The waiting room is large and includes sufficient seating for a busy clinic.

W. A. Mozart Musicalische Gesellschaft Guide to Chamber Music , Melvin Berger provides a succinct summary of Haydns approach to quartet writing as found in the Apponyi Quartets. "The quartets have attention getting introductions, considered necessary for the larger and less sophisticated public audiences. The part writing is more brilliant and demanding than before, and the melodies are catchier and easier to recall. The tempos are exaggerated (faster fast movements, slower slow movements): many intimate details are replaced by grand gestures; and there is a general intensification of all aspects, particularly of the emotional content of the music. Evidence of the stronger feelings and greater expressivity in these compositions led scholar Karl Geiringer to comment "the dawn of Romanticism is noticeable in the String Quartets of Op.74". The G minor quartet gets its nickname (The Rider) The Rider as we are carried off by this four-voiced steed from minor to major.

Extractions: JOSEPH URBAN opulent sets were brought to the attention of impresario Florenz Ziegfeld and Urban was put to work on Ziegfelds 1915 Follies. The critics were dazzled and hailed Urban as the real star of a revue that included W. C. Fields, Bert Williams, and Ed Wynn. He continued to work on every Ziegfeld production in part or in full until Ziegfelds death in 1932. He contributed refinement and sophistication to the Follies and, as one reviewer commented, helped to lift the revue from "something common to a plane of quality." Urbans designs for Ziegfeld book shows included hits like Sally (1920), Kid Boots (1923), Show Boat (1927), Rosalie (1928) and Whoopee (1928). In 1919, Sam Moore auditioned for Florenz Ziegfeld in New York. The happy result was a two-year run with Ziegfeld's Follies (1920 - 1921). Proficient on the violin by age seven, Sam was later sent to Macon, Georgia, to study under Professor W.C. Kaler. After a badly healed broken arm ended his aspirations as a violinist, Moore turned to the banjo and guitar and began to experiment with everyday objects as musical instruments. In spring 1917 it was announced that the FAIRBANKS TWINS were to soon appear in Florenz Ziegfeld's Follies. For the next several years they were seen in the Follies at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City. The duo appeared on stage in The Midnight Frolic (a revue), Up the Ladder and in the 1929 Warner Bros. musical film, On With the Show.

Johannes Brahms earns his first wages at the early age of 14 as a pianist and musician in public houses. In 1862 he moves to Vienna, where he lives until the end of his life. In this film, various well-known German musicians interpret and talk about the music of the Romantic, Johannes Brahms. The different periods of the composer's life are reflected in his works, from song to piano solos to symphonies. Brahms' encounter with Robert Schumann and especially Schumann's wife, the pianist Clara Wieck, has a decisive influence on the young man for the rest of his life. A close friendship develops with Clara Schumann. Even after the tragic death of Schumann, Clara continues as artistic advisor, friend and companion. Background information Johannes Brahms is born in 1833 in Hamburg. The house in which he was born, in the "Gängeviertel", a poor district of Hamburg, was destroyed during the Second World War. The mother, 17 years older than her husband, works as a seamstress, and the father earns his money playing music with his double-bass and horn. He likes to invite colleagues to his home so that they can play music together. In this environment, Johannes, an introverted boy, has his first playful experiences with music. In spite of the poverty and crowded living conditions, the mother manages to give her children a feeling of loving security.

Extractions: Now that Cho-Liang Lin, one of the supreme violinists of our time and the director of two acclaimed music festivals, has reached the age of 41, it may be a good time to stop calling him Jimmy. The splendid Taiwan-born virtuoso, renowned for his soulful expression of emotion in classic, romantic, and modern music, acquired his nicknameused universally in the music worldduring his student days at Juilliard, where he worked with Dorothy DeLay. An upbeat, energetic, and handsome man in his prime, Lin talks freely about his life and career. "When I started in my early 20s," he says, "I insisted that everyone call me Cho-Liang, but Americans gravitate to whats easier, and so my schoolmates and teacher called me Jimmy. Finally, I gave up." Back in the 1980s, Asian names were not as common on American concert posters as they are today, and referring to his longtime pal Yo-Yo Ma, Lin adds, "My parents didnt give me an easy name like Yo-Yo. By the way, Yo means friend, Yo-Yo means friendly, and Yo-Yo Ma therefore means friendly horse." Lin was born in 1960 in Hsin-Chu, a quiet college town 60 miles south of Taipei, a research center where his father worked as a nuclear physicist. The city has since grown into the Silicon Valley of Taiwan, but in the 60s it was still a quiet place. Lins brainy father, Kuo-Chin Lin, who played the traditional Chinese stringed instrument the

Extractions: by Edith Eisler There has been a surge of interest in the great violinists of the past recently, as if audiences have tired of the undifferentiated, mass-producedsounding performances often heard today and begun yearning for the "good old days" when players could be clearly identified by their tone and personality. The resulting flood of reissues on compact disc offers a fascinating look at the style and characteristics of the greatest violinists of the last century. In this selective report on the concerto repertoire, I hope to reclaim some less-known players and stimulate further explorations. The earliest violinist recorded here is Carl Flesch (18731944), who is remembered mainly as a great teacher but whose recording of the Beethoven and Brahms Concertos (

Extractions: The Dave Matthews Band formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, in early 1991, when vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he opted to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. Dave found assistance in drummer Carter Beauford and saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who were both accomplished jazz musicians in the local Charlottesville music scene. Based on the recommendation of distinguished local jazz guru John D'earth, 16-year-old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard came on board to play bass. Completing the band was keyboard player Peter Griesar, who left the band after a couple of years, as well as the talented and classically trained violinist, Boyd Tinsley. The first official gig for the newly conceived Dave Matthews Band was May 11, 1991, at a private rooftop party in Charlottesville. Its first public show was at the city's 1991 Earth Day Festival. Local weekly gigs soon followed, and within a little time, word of the band's contagious new sound spread like wildfire throughout the region. Clubs started to fill up, tours began to cover more territory, and the fan base grew at an incredible rate.
