Extractions: The program begins with Johannes Brahms' Sonata No. 1 in G Major, Op. 78 . During summers in the late 1870's Brahms vacationed in the lakefront town of Pvrtschach where he wrote some of his greatest works. One of them was this romantic gem, the first of three sonatas for violin and piano to be published by the composer. Antonin Dvorak's Romance follows, before intermission. This work was originally the slow movement of the F Minor string quartet written in 1873. Dvorak re-orchestrated the piece for violin solo with piano or orchestral accompaniment in 1877. The beautiful solo line and its interwoven accompaniment within the melancholy harmonies make it one of the most introspective and stirring pieces in the repertoire.
