Extractions: VIOLIN VIRTUOSO VADIM GLUZMAN TO PERFORM IN CALDWELL ON MARCH 7 CALDWELL, ID Back by popular demand, Ukrainian-born violinist Vadim Gluzman will perform on Thursday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Jewett Auditorium on the Albertson College campus. Gluzman ranks among the first-class artists of his generation. In 1991 he studied with violinist Isaac Stern, and in 1994 he won the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. In April 2001, Gluzman made his Carnegie Hall concerto debut, performing with the Columbus, Ohio Symphony. His appearances as a soloist have included the Houston, Seattle, Tokyo, and Jerusalem symphonies, the Boston Pops, the English String Orchestra and the Ravinia Festival Orchestra. Gluzman, who now lives in Israel, will perform a varied program of violin selections. He will be accompanied by his wife, pianist Angela Yoffe. Gluzman will perform on the 1690 "ex-Leopold Auer" Stradivari on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago. The performance is sponsored by Caldwell Fine Arts. Extractions: Swinging jazz tunes of the '30s, '40s and '50s will open the 1998-99 season of the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University when the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra performs Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. Under the leadership of legendary trombonist Buddy Morrow, the big band will play the orchestra's signature tune, "Opus One." "Marie," "Stardust" and "I'll Never Smile Again," a tune made famous by Frank Sinatra during his stint with the original band in the early '40s, and other jazz standards are on tap. Morrow, who has led the 16-piece ensemble since 1975, has been performing his noteworthy brand of swing since the late '30s. He has played with big band greats Artie Shaw, Eddy Duchin and Tommy Dorsey. For RCA Victor, he formed his own orchestra and recorded the chart-topping tune "Night Train." Tickets to the toe-tapping show are $12.50 for the general public, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Clemson Tiger fans will cheer the beginning of the fall football campaign with the annual First Friday Parade and Pep Rally Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. Traditionally held on the Friday before the first home game, the parade and pep rally will feature the Tiger Band performing rousing renditions of "Tiger Rag," "Eye of the Tiger" and other game-favorites. The university mascot, cheerleaders, rally cats and student organizations will celebrate the parade's theme "Where the Tigers Play" with cheers, displays and floats.
