Extractions: The town subsequently developed trade and manufacturing, established a middle class and acquired its own administration. Around 1100, a protective rampart was built around the town. At the death of Duke John III, Count of Flanders, Louis de Male, taking advantage of the situation, took possession of Brussels. But, two months later, Everard t'Serclaes succeeded in driving the Flemish from the town and further ramparts were built to protect the city-dwellers. The arrival of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy in 1430, brought economic prosperity. Twenty years later, Brussels was considered the capital of the kingdom of Burgundy and became, under Charles V, the capital of the Low Countries. The death of his successor, Philip II of Spain who left no succession, brought with it numerous conflicts. In 1695, the troops of Louis XIV destroyed much of Brussels. The town finally came under Austrian domination until the French revolution.

NYFVC - Newsletters on behind the scenes at the Queen elisabeth Competition for A dazzling violinist, viewed by some as a second filmmaker can make an industrial on glass into a http://www.nyfvc.org/newsletters/apr98.html
Extractions: April 1997 Dear Members and Friends: The weeks have passed quickly since our last newsletter. As I write in late March, winter said goodbye with a fistful of snow last week and today it seems that we can forget spring and prepare for summer - all because of El Ninjo! In February, board member Andrea Traubner organized the first in what we project as a series of programs highlighting the work of film experts from foreign countries. Thanks to the efforts of board member William Sloan , we were able to screen in the Titus 2 Theater at The Museum of Modern Art. Lily Talapessy, Film Officer at the Consulate General of the Netherlands introduced us to the contemporary film scene in Holland. The Winners afforded us a moving and engaging view of what goes on behind the scenes at the Queen Elisabeth Competition for classical music in Brussels the euphoria of winning the coveted prize, the heartbreak of not making it quite to the top, and the relationships that develop between the contestants. Filmmakers Paul Cohen and David van Tijn focussed their attention on four winners and their subsequent, not always brilliant, careers. The fate of Philipp Hirschhorn stands out. A dazzling violinist, viewed by some as a second Paganini, he appears in front of the camera as a broken shell, marked by illness and full of bitterness and rueful memories. The joyfully elegant short Glas by well-known Dutch documentary filmmaker Bert Haanstra, who died last year, broke the somber mood and gave us a wonderful example of how a gifted filmmaker can make an industrial on glass into a work of art. The perfectly balanced interaction of images and jazz was a joy to watch. The screening was followed by an informal get-together at a nearby restaurant.

More or less recreating an evenings entertainment that a wealthy, educated Venetian court would have heard in the mid-160os, Early Music Vancouvers season-opening concert on Friday celebrated the madrigals of the great Claudio Monteverdi. The theme borrowed the name of his eighth and last volume of secular madrigals, War and Love a metaphor, since, of course, love is war. Or certainly was for the late Renaissance, in love with love and overlooking no opportunity for poetic self-flagellation. But for the poetry, are we so different today?
