Tom Hall had planned to celebrate his 20th anniversary as Music Director of Baltimore Choral Arts Society with a concert that would re-create his debut concert from 1982 with Handel's Alexander's Feast and Britten's Hymn to St. Cecilia. Then the World Trade Center happened, and suddenly this program didnt seem right. I was uncomfortable doing Alexanders Feast, Hall told Peabody News, because it is a somewhat glib, satirical look at military might. I also thought it was inappropriate to have a concert to do with me, given the magnitude of this event, and I thought this was rather an opportunity to share an artistic statement giving hope. So the program for the November 4 concert presents instead the Randall Thomson a capella setting of the Allelluia , Brahms Nanie and Haydns Mass in Time of War The point of pairing the Brahms and the Haydn together, Hall explains, is that the Brahms is a very personal reflection on the death of a friend. The work is based on a poem by Schiller, which contains the lines Even the beautiful must die. It is a very touching tribute. The Haydn makes a more universal statement. His Mass was written in 1796 at a time when Vienna was under threat of occupation by Napoleon. There is a parallel between how Haydn and his contemporaries felt and how we feel now.

Extractions: On this page you find brief reviews of some of my favourite LP:s. You will not find any discographies, I simply could not afford to buy that many records. One of the big advantages with LP:s is that they are cheap. An other advantage is that the sound quality is better, especially if you like me enjoy listening with headphones. With good ol' monaural recordings you avoid the exaggerated stereo-picture of most stereophonic recordings. Also the sound of LP:s is softer and more immediate. A little surface noise and some scratches you will get used to in due time... So here we go. I have, lazy as I am, simply organised my favourites alfabetically. Extractions: In his case, rather than a green jacket or a trophy, Yale School of Music graduate Kuo's goal is to raise money for and awareness of victims of last September's deadly earthquake in his homeland. He will do so in a series of concerts there this week with three members of the school's faculty: Brazilian-born cellist and conductor Aldo Parisot; his wife, pianist Elizabeth Sawyer Parisot; and violinist Erick Friedman. With Taiwan's strong emphasis on classical music training and competition, Kuo said, Parisot and Friedman may be more revered there than in the United States. As well-known in classical music circles as Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer are on the links, they are generating the kind of excitement there that a sports icon would stir up here, he said.

Ruggero Ricci October 21, 2 p.m., Master Class; and October 22, 3 p.m., Concert "The freshness, vigor and ease of interpretation of the incredible performer attest to a technical mastery that, in our century, remains unparalleled." Gramophone-April 1998 In 1998, Ruggero Ricci celebrated his 80th birthday and an extraordinary career spanning 70 years. His discography lists more the 500 recordings, including 65 CDs. An enthusiastic exponent of the solo recital, he will play works of Bach, Prokofief, Wieniawski, Ernst, Kreisler, Heifetz, and Paganini. Past teaching posts include Indiana University, the Julliard School, and the University of Michigan. Ricci now teaches at the Mozarteum Akadamie in Salzburg.
Extractions: Even his harshest detractors had to admit that Jascha Heifetz (1900 - 1987) had the greatest technique in history (and the few recordings of his concerts prove that his precision wasnt a studio fabrication). Even more amazing, his fabulous talent was fully formed by the time of his first teenaged records, cut weeks after his sensational 1917 Carnegie Hall debut. Just listen to how effortlessly he tosses off Bazzinis fiendishly difficult "Ronde des Lutins" with breakneck speed, staggering technique and attitude galore. In art, as in politics, radical youths mellow in middle age and gravitate toward a more conservative middle ground, but not Heifetz. Rather than embrace mellow maturity, Heifetz maintained throughout his half-century career the fleet precision of his initial fame. Most artists dream in vain of fending off technical decline. Heifetz, though, faced the opposite problem. Many violin devotees accuse Heifetz of never evolving a distinctive personal vision. Indeed, it has become fashionable to flail Heifetz for an emotional reticence at odds with the heart-on-sleeve style we normally expect of our fiddlers. But instead of damning him for what he wasn't (and never pretended to be), it seems far better to hail him for seizing upon a unique personality and never straying. Throughout his career, Heifetz projected his sensational technique and pure tone with affirmative athletic confidence. Even in his last performances, he sounds like the most youthful violinist on record.
