Extractions: Jan. 7, 1999 The Office of External Affairs is heading up a relief effort to assist the Nicaraguan and Honduran people affected by Hurricane Mitch. According to the American Red Cross, Hurricane Mitch proved to be one of the most devastating storms to hit Central America in this decade. Five million people were displaced by the storm and the resulting floods, rock slides and mud slides. More than 10,000 people died in the disaster. We are attempting to assist these unfortunate people with targeted funds for medical and food supplies, said FSU Vice President for External Affairs Robert Ortwein. These people and their countries are experiencing a tremendous hardship and we have teamed up with the American Red Cross to focus our collections on direct medical and food supplies. Besides the human difficulties, the countries infrastructures have suffered major blows. They have lost much of their communication systems, health services, roads, and bridges. It has been estimated that Hurricane Mitch pushed back the Honduran economy 20 years. The University is currently engaging in a month-long fundraising campaign through Jan. 31. Checks should be payable to The American Red Cross International Relief Fund and forwarded to External Affairs, BIS-415. For more information, call x3600.

Extractions: by James E. Ross B.A., M.L.S. Goals of this evolving authority file include: to provide name authority data for library cataloging purposes to serve as an authoritative reference work to aid in selection of materials to call attention to the crisis situation in cataloging to be an agent for positive change Jump to letter: [A-F] [G-M] [N-Z] The following is intended as an alternative name authority file to be used in the cataloging of sound recordings of Hispanic popular music. It may also prove useful for reference and as a selection aid for library sound collections. Though content is restricted primarily to the world of current popular music, names of some other entertainers will be found. There has been a need for such a combination reference work/authority file for some time since national (U.S.) sources of bibliographic and authority data seldom provide adequate data for cataloging these materials, or for use with Hispanic audiences. This should be obvious by comparing the many differences between the data presented here and that found in many library databases. Libraries hoping to provide even minimum level cataloging data will find it necessary to go beyond the limitations found in today's cataloging environment. Libraries depending on the national name authority file (cited as NAF in some of the entries here) will find NAF to be a real barrier to the provision of adequate library services because of the incomplete and inaccurate nature of so much of the Hispanic materials data contained there. Given the current institutional environment with its strong, deeply ingrained resistance to

Extractions: Home January 2001 January 2000 January 1999 ... December 1997 Paul Von Klenau Paolo und Francesca The only PISTON SYMPHONY not on CD (until now...) WALTER PISTON (1894-1976): Symphony No. 3, JAMES YANNATOS (b.1929): Prisms (Symphony No. 3), Concerto for String Quartet and Orchestra. Piston's Third dates from 1947 and was commissioned in memory of Natalie Koussevitsky. Its first movement is a moving, somber elegy which rises to a powerful conclusion, ushering in a wildly manic scherzo-like second movement which is followed by a solemn, majestic adagio and a joyful, almost frivolous finale. Yannatos' concerto (1995) is in the Copland-Hanson-Thomson mode, providing upbeat, graceful and, ultimately, exhilarating music for both soloists and orchestra while Prisms (1989) translates the refracton of light to the refraction of tonality into polytonality but the work is approachable and attractive regardless of of its underlying structure. Mendelssohn String Quartet, Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra; James Yannatos. Albany TROY 400 (U.S.A.) WALTER PISTON (1894-1976): Flute Quintet, String Sextet, Piano Quartet, Piano Quintet. The piano quintet of 1949 is probably Piston's most "Romantic" work with the influence of Brahms and even Dvorak present in its full-bodied, rich style. From 1942, the flute quintet is more neo-classical, the soloists usually being part of the texture and only emerging as a soloist on two occasions. The sextet (1964) is remarkably severe and chromatic for Piston with jagged lines and intense counterpoint creating a certain monumentality in its first movement. Although written in the same year as the sextet, the piano quartet is much more lyrical but still infused with the meticulousness and precision of Piston's 1960s style.
