Further Information The third in a series featuring previously unrecorded works for violin/viola by well-known composers, this CD contains several world premiere recordings of Alan Hovhaness's works for violin/viola and keyboard. Glenn Freeman's Ogre/Ogress have not sold out to easy commercial conformity. The evidence is a stream of highly idiosyncratic releases in which Freeman and the violinist Christina Fong have exhumed and 'recreated' works by John Cage, Morton Feldman and now Hovhaness. He soon became well known in avant-garde circles, but I imagine it took a while before he was more widely acclaimed. Personally I was acquainted with his art as late as the late 1980s through Swedish composer, musician and radio producer Folke Rabe , who knows them all, from Terry Riley to Malcolm Goldstein to Pauline Oliveros and knew late composers like Robert Erickson Frank Zappa and

Extractions: The following sites have information, some with soundclips, of Hovhaness CDs and mail-order facilities Crystal Records is the best source for Hovhaness recordings. These can be regarded as 'definitive' performances in that most releases are either conducted or supervised by the composer. Many of these recordings were originally released by Hovhaness for his own label, Poseidon, and the British label Unicorn. They were subsequently licensed to Crystal. Dating from the early 1970s, when Hovhaness sought to make more of his work available in recorded form, the orchestral recordings were made with British orchestras as these were (and still are) cheaper to hire than American orchestras. Delos has championed Hovhaness's music in the 1990s with about half a dozen CD releases. The orchestral works were conducted by Gerard Schwarz, an advocate of Hovhaness since the 1960s. Koch Classics has recorded many fine CDs of Hovhaness music, delving into the past to bring us both older and newer orchestral works plus two CDs of his little-known but colourful piano works. Telarc has released 2 good all-Hovhaness CDs, one with Harp music and the other orchestral works, with the only commercially available recording of

Also, he has written for the Kurt Weill Newsletter and Clavier magazine, and has published scholarship in the Journal of the American Musicological Society and in compendia for Cambridge University Press and Garland Publishing. A study of Frank Zappa's orchestral music ("Frank Zappa and the Anti-Fetishist Orchestra") appeared in The Musical Quarterly (Winter 1999), and he recently finished editing a compendium of new essays on musical modernism ( Listening to Modernism , in press at Garland). Extractions: H arry the Horse had the odds about 5-1 against Steven Sloane being the right pick to replace Dennis Russell Davis as music director of the irreplaceable American Composers Orchestra (ACO). After all, the much-traveled journeyman conductor Sloane lives in Germany and already holds three music directorships in Europe. He doesnt specialize in new or American music, which is all the ACO plays. And his only trial run here last March was distinctly underwhelming. Little wonder that many new-music-loving railbirdsmyself includedwere concerned about the future of this extremely precious musical resource. Fortunately, the Horse et al had this one wrong. In his November 3 debut at the helm of the ACO, Sloane set a brisk, smart and sure pace through a wide range of musical styles with a finesse that suggests that he may be more than just cheap speed after all. The event was billed as a A Program of Psalms , with the opening half devoted to three ACO-commissioned world premieresby David Lang, Shulamit Ran, and Milton Babbittalong with selections from Jon Magnussen's Psalm and two a cappella psalm settings by Charles Ives. The second half of the concert featured the New York premiere of John Harbison's

Extractions: Lara St. John but also the world of classical music where it has now become commonplace for album covers and publicity shots of women performers to focus on assets that have nothing to do with musical talent. From the dreadful Bond and Vanessa Mae to the quite competent Eroica Trio and the fashionably kinky Ahn sisters, to incredibly talented and beautiful Anne-Sophie Mutter, desperate classical marketers has learned that sex sells. Recent Hillary Hahn and Leila Josefowicz album covers veer dangerously close to running off the Lolita exit of the Humbert Humbert Expressway. Which is not to suggest that marketing has anything to do with the founding of the Beata Moon Ensemble, a new all-gal band dedicated to the promotion of women composers, conductors, and performers, which makes its debut Columbias Miller Theatre on February 22. Led by the pretty-darn-cute Korean-American composer and performer Beata Moon, the group will perform works by Ruth Crawford Seeger, Tania Leon, Julia Wolfe, Anne LeBaron, Beata Moon and Elena Kats Chernin. I think its a great idea. The work of women composers is certainly underrepresented on the programs of every music organization in the world. Whatever it takes to get an audience to turn out to hear that music is good.

Extractions: By Amanda MacBlane NewM us icBox Simply by being a female composer in the 1920s and 1930s, Ruth Crawford Seeger undermined the gender roles that were imposed upon Americans at the time. More importantly, however, the wild atonality of her music established her as one of the key figures in the development of a classical music tradition in the States. Henry Cowell, a giant in the realm of mavericks, invited Seeger to publish the final four of her Preludes and her Study in Mixed Accents in the New Music Quarterly, which was a key publication for the distribution of "maverick" music. These pieces along with many others appear on a recording of Crawford Seeger's complete solo piano music performed by Jenny Lin, allowing you to hear how the composer's music evolved into an original voice. A few decades later, the musical landscape of American music was forever changed by the music and philosophies of John Cage, who is represented this month by a recording of his music for saxophone, an instrument that is kind of an American maverick itself. A late work by his "New York School" ally Morton Feldman, the delicate almost 2-hour Violin and String Quartet, receives its premiere recording by violinist Christina Fong and the Rangzen Quartet. And Reflections collects a decade's worth of chamber music ranging from a piano trio to a duet for toy piano to prepared guitar by Bernadette Speach, a one-time Feldman student whose music carries on the anti-tradition tradition of the New York School.

Extractions: David Hopkins Singer-songwriter David Hopkins began his musical career playing keyboards and writing songs in the popular Irish band, LiR. LiR had a top 10 ten hit "In A Day" and #1 Alternative album "Magico Magico". They did some well-attended tours of the States - playing showcases with acts like Sinead O'Connor and Jeff Buckley and eventually got signed in America to the independent label, What Are Records?. However in 1995 David decided to come to the U.S. permanently and LiR parted ways. After touring the U.S. as a keyboardist in several bands he created with LiR into a more individual style, he released his first solo E.P, entitled "Over There Jean Pierre" last year. "Jean Pierre" garnered David more acclaim and earned him high profile gigs at the CMJ New Music Festival and Nadine's Wild Weekend. David recently finished work on his first full-length solo album entitled "Here Comes the Bright Light". With its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics "Bright Light" makes the perfect musical companion for any fan of Nick Drake, Rufus Wainright, or Belle & Sebastian while still retaining a unique style all its own.
