Vancouver Recital Society | Recital Season | Julia Fischer, Violin julia fischer violin Milana Chernjazska piano Sunday, October 22, 2000 800 pm Pre Forthe rest of his life, Tartini was an important violinist, composer, and http://www.vanrecital.com/season/0001/concert2_notes.html
Extractions: by Brian Mix Tonight's recital presents three representative incarnations of the genre known as the "violin sonata." It may seem self-evident that a violin sonata is what it is; we expect two performers to emerge from the wings and play a composition that is essentially a piece for a violin soloist. However, to think in such a manner is to neglect the history of the form, and overestimate the importance that the violin has had throughout much of classical music history. The violin represents for us today the traditionally pre-eminent solo instrument, but it very nearly lost that status to the piano, and the two instruments now occupy the twin thrones of the musical Royal Court. Devil's Trill Sonata is perhaps his best known work today, occupying a place in many a virtuoso's repertoire. It dates from about 1745, although this is a conjecture based on stylistic details; Tartini is said to have changed his style to a more "graceful and expressive" manner in 1744. His music is a peculiar blend of lyricism, virtuosity, and pathos, leading the way into the Rococo era to come.

Extractions: Fischer, 19, lit up all of Davies Hall with her lustrous interpretation of Sibelius' Violin Concerto March 13 under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. The attractive Bavarian musician with the hour-glass waist launched into the distant pianissimos of the opening with a silky, serene tone. Then she astonished me with a powerful bow arm, particularly in the sinewy finale, reflecting a vigor at the other end of the sonic spectrum. And her intonation, double stops and other technical matters were thoroughly mastered.
