Mischa Elman Concert Favorites, Music Minus One Violin Joseph Seiger was chosen by the famous violinist mischa elman to be his exclusiveaccompanist in the 50's and 60's and it was during this time that the pianist http://www.musicteachermag.com/html/reviews_mischaelman.html
Extractions: Music Minus One (MMO) recorded tapes have been around for a long time, proving to be of great value to students and teachers as well as seasoned performers in the preparation of performances. They were designed to give the solo instrumentalist the opportunity to play along with a pre-recorded piano, orchestral or ensemble accompaniment. Many of these analog tapes have now been digitally re-mastered to compact discs, a format that is immensely practical from a technical as well as musical viewpoint. An ever-present problem for string players during the learning period is the absence of a good piano accompanist. Many long hours are necessarily spent in the study process, however it ultimately becomes imperative to play together in order to understand the complete score. As soon as the student can play with technical fluency, secure rhythm and a firmly projected tone, the duo process can begin. Music Minus One fills the gap admirably. It does more. Where can one have such a permanent resource as the beautiful and sensitive accompaniments of one of the great pianists, Joseph Seiger? No need to travel across town, hire a studio, pay expensive accompaniment fees, when at the touch of a button, Mr. Seiger will play the piece of your choice.

Extractions: BUY NOW AmazonUK AmazonUS Many of Elmans finest qualities exist alongside the worst in Schuberts Ave Maria and s felicitously and sympathetically skittish here with staccato accents which tend to distract from his violinist partners more erratic and idiosyncratic phrasal ploys. Chopins Nocturne gives us Elmans practised finger slides but at such a slow and ponderous tempo that the work bloats itself like a whale beached on the shore. Elman still has some pungent things to say in Schumanns Prophet Bird but for all his fervour here, as elsewhere, its inevitable that one chooses instead to remember the violinistic titan whose incendiary tone inspired two generations of violinists and enchanted countless admirers around the world.
Extractions: The first fourteen tracks date from a Vanguard session in 1960 and the last two from a late recording in 1966. This Kreisler album followed Mischa Elmans Jubilee Album of 1959 and was to be followed by other records of solo pieces as well as concerto performances; a Khachaturian concerto in Vienna was spicy and intriguing repertoire for Elman, though one should never forget that he was dedicatee of a Martinu Concerto (the premiere is fortunately preserved on Music and Arts). Vanguards producer Seymour Solomon had faith in Elman when others had long grown tired of the ageing violinist in favour of younger talents and its entirely to Vanguards credit that they gave Elman the opportunity to commit so much to disc. No Elman disc is without interest of some kind and few of these Vanguards are devoid either of points of contention.
