Extractions: ECSTASY IN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY KILDARE? THE STRANGE FATE OF JOHN LATTIN OF MORRISTOWN LATTIN (1731) This article was originally published in the Journal of the County Kildare Archaeological Society xviii, 4 (1998-9), 565-88, and is republished here by permission of the honorary editor of the journal, Dr Raymond Gillespie, Dept. of Modern History, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, co. Kildare. Some minor errors and slips have been corrected here, and several abbreviations in the references have been expanded. In St David's Churchyard, Naas, co. Kildare, a handsome, well-preserved tombstone marks the ancestral grave of the Lattins of Morristown Lattin. Granted lands in the area during the reign of King John, 1199-1216, the family had also established themselves as merchants in Naas itself by the late sixteenth century. In 1641 the estate comprised a fairly modest 660 acres around Naas, a house and tenements in the town itself, as well as tenements and three castles elsewhere in the area. The principal holding was Morristown Moynagh (400 acres), later to be renamed Morristown Lattin; the name survives in the present townlands of Morristown and Morristown Lower, and Lattensbog nearby is also obviously named after the family.

SFX (April) boasted a feature on "the making of the blockbuster sequel" - a bold prediction, given that the film does not open in the US and Britain until May - and an interview with the director, Bryan Singer. How was the film affected by world events, the magazine asked him.

Extractions: THE CULTURAL, AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL, PHILOSOPHIC AND AESTHETIC BACKGROUND TO SYMPHONIC EXPRESSIONISM 1917-1929 Describing the neo-colonial nature of Canadian culture between the First and Second World War in his essay Mixed Grill: Touring Fare in Canada, 1920-1935, Robertson Davies observed of particularly the British cultural influence that Canada did not cease to be a colony, psychologically, until long after I was born [i.e. 19l3], and in matters relating to the arts its colonialism was absolute. A national culture arises from the depths of a people, and Canadians knew where those depths were, and certainly it was not here. There were too many Canadians who were physically loyal to the new land, but who remained exiles in matters of the spirit. You might as well have asked for an indigenous form of government, or an indigenous religion, as ask for Canadian art. Theatre, music, and literature did not originate here. They came from home, wherever home might be. Herman Voaden, like Davies, was acutely aware of the embryonic nature of Canadian culture in the l920s and 1930s. Justifying his comprehensive requirements for play reading, dramatic analysis and practical theatre work for his first Queens University summer play production course in 1934, Voaden indicated to W. H. Fyfe, the Principal of Queens University, that in England there is a leisure class, which has maintained its gentle traditions through centuries. Toward the standards of this class those in the middle and lower strata are gradually drawn.
