Instead, she studied as a concert pianist at the Royal Academy of Music, from where she went on to win various prestigious awards and develop an accomplished career. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - and in 2000, she decided to stop performing to concentrate full time on writing. The Fellowship is buying Eleanor time away from immediate commissions to undertake a period of development, experimentation and eventually training with a well-established composer. This will give her the chance to push the limits of compositional style and create major new works, including an opera and large-scale orchestral and choral works.

Extractions: "Altenberg Trio Makes the Most of the Setting" [U]nder the Da Camera Society's director, MaryAnn Bonino, the main business of the operation known as Chamber Music in Historic Sites is music-making in rooms and locations of appropriate size and character. The music: masterpieces of the piano trio form. The players: the splendidly accomplished and energetically over-the-top Altenberg Trio from Austria. The Italian instruments: matching violin and cello, both from the studio of Giovanni Guadagnini in the mid-1700s, and a recent Fazioli piano fully capable of great depth, frightening fury and exquisite tenderness. All this added up to a splendid, one-time-only experience at the 1922 Canfield-Moreno Estate, at the top of a hill, the entire city below in a wraparound view. Extractions: Introduction Strings and Things introduces some of the "nuts and bolts" of playing Baroque music. Richard Reynolds' Fiddles, Fittings, Gut and Horsehair discusses the characteristics of Baroque stringed instruments, which are truly the heart of the Baroque orchestra, and how they vary from their modern cousins. Keeping Philharmonia on Top of the Beat explores some of the secrets of conducting and what makes a good musical leader. Following the articles are illustrations of two families of Baroque stringed instruments, the violin family and a consort of violas da gamba. excerpted from an article by Richard Reynolds When you attend a Philharmonia concert, you can readily see that the wind instruments oboes, trumpets and horns in particularare quite different from their modern counterparts. But from the audience's perspective the violins, violas and double basses do not look appreciably different from the instruments you see at a modern symphony concert. Only the cellos are clearly different, in that those used in Philharmonia do not have end pins and are held off the floor between the players knees. (In fact, many string players in Philharmonia own three instruments: Baroque and Classical instruments for use in Philharmonia, and a modern instrument for other playing. Philharmonias programming is planned so that players can use either a Baroque or Classical instrument for an entire concert. In the interest of brevity, we'll concentrate on the Baroque instruments here.)
