Extractions: Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell has been captivating audiences around the globe for more than 20 years. Known for his poetic musicality, Joshua first came to national attention at age 14 when he made his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. That performance, soon followed by his Carnegie Hall debut and subsequent recording contract, created a sensation that spread throughout the music world. Now in his thirties, Joshua has performed with nearly every leading symphony orchestra and conductor, recorded 26 albums and has earned the rare title of classical music superstar. Bell has evolved from a technical whiz to a true artist and intellectual whose music feeds both your brain and your heart, said Newsweek. Joshua and his two sisters were raised on a farm in Bloomington, Indiana. As a child Joshua indulged in many passions outside of music, becoming an avid computer game player and a competitive athlete. He placed fourth in a national tennis tournament at age 10 and still keeps his racquet close by. Joshua received his first violin at age four after his parents, both psychologists by profession, noticed him plucking tunes with rubber bands he had stretched around the handles of his dresser drawers. By 12 he was serious about the instrument thanks in large part to the inspiration of renowned violinist and pedagogue Josef Gingold, who had become his beloved teacher and mentor.

Extractions: Joshua Bell: violinist As a violinist, Joshua Bell has always seemed far older than his years. A child prodigy from Bloomington, Ind., he won Seventeen magazine's annual music competition at 14 and made his professional debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra six months later. This year, Bell was praised on Oscar night by Best Original Score composer John Corigliano, who thanked him for playing "like a god" in The Red Violin . When it comes to his appearance, however, the 32-year-old Bell was a late bloomer. "At 12, people thought I was 8. When I was 20, poeple thought I was 14," he says. It dudn't help that he entered Indiana University sporting what classmate Edgar Meyer, a bass player, calls "a bowl haircut that was irresistably cute!" Even today the 6-ft. Bell, who still gets asked to show ID when he orders a drink, complains about having "little-boy hair" that's too fine to shape. Fans are too taken with his sparkling blue eyes to notice. "I like that," he says. "For me with women, eyes are the No. 1 physical attribute. It's a nice compliment if someone says it to me." The son of Alan, 68, a psychologist, and Shirley, 64, a guidance counselor, Bell recieves hundreds of letters a year, some proposing marriage. "Being out with Joshua is like being out with a rock star," says Sheena McDonald, The Red Violin 's associate producer. "He gets phone messages saying, "I was the girl in the red dress in the second row." Since breaking up last July with a longtime girlfriend, Bell's only constant companion has been his 1732 Stradivarius. "Relationships aren't easy given my travel schedule," he explains. Fortunately, Bell doesn't have to find time to work out: "I'm drenched by the end of a concert. Sometimes I lose up to 5 lbs." But he does pay close attention to something else. "I always make sure my fly is zipped. I'm neurotic about that!" he says. "It's the last thing I do before I go onstage."

The Red Violin seems to have opened the door, even though it was a damned hard flick to find even on premium channels, which tended to schedule showings in the early-morning or late-night hours. An occasional primetime screening invariably conflicted with something I cared more to see than a 2½ -hour movie about a handed-down violin one, furthermore, that got so-so reviews (as cinema, not as a Cultural Reach). I mean, that kind of film was done to a turn decades ago in Tales of Manhattan , with an all-star cast.

Extractions: A superb collection of Bernstein, mostly heard in effective new arrangements for violin and orchestra by William David Brohn, along with the now-familiar Serenade for Violin, Strings, Harp and Percussion. Sony's engineers have given us natural-sounding multi-channel sound, with the solo violin perfectly placed. See REVIEW BRAHMS: Violin Concerto in D, Op. 77. STRAVINSKY: Violin Concerto in D. A splendid coupling of two widely divergent violin concertos, the classic Brahms dating from 1878, and the spiky Stravinsky composed in 1931. Hilary Hahn is among the leading young violinists of the day playing with impeccable technique and beautiful tone - Marriner and his group provide fine accompaniments, and the 5 channel sound places the solo instrument just where it should be, with an overall warm ambience.

Extractions: "Joshua Bell plays like a god! cried John Corigliano into the TV cameras last year, clutching his first Oscar for Best Original Score. He was referring to the brilliant young violinist he had hired to breathe life into the score for the poetic independent film, The Red Violin. In fact, Bell inspired Corigliano so much that the composer wrote the first violin concerto of his career. For Bell, the virtuoso who began his international solo career at age 14, working on Red Violin had some inspiring moments also. As artistic consultant, Bell helped the actors pantomime virtuoso performances of their own. Of course, there are some things you just have to leave up to the professionals. So when British actor Jason Flemyng had trouble pulling off a scene that called for close-up shots of him whipping his on-screen lover, Greta Scacchi, into a frenzy with his instrument, Bell ended up performing the close-ups himself, spending a day wrapped in a naked Scacchi. Nice work if you can get it.

At any rate, there's no denying the input of the musician who performs the music. An interesting and exciting case in point was the performance of the Saint-Saens Concerto No. 3 in B minor by violinist Joshua Bell with Hans Vonk and the St. Louis Symphony on Friday night in the Community Center Theater. In his era (the latter 19th century), Saint-Saens was willingly known as a conservative, as well as tremendously successful, composer and performer. Although Gounod once called him the French Beethoven, Saint-Saens himself said things like "Beware of all exaggeration" and "The search for originality is fatal to art."

Bellissimo: A Joshua Bell Site - Article Click Here! Brilliant violinist joshua bell launches DSO's new seasonby Lawrence B. Johnson The Detroit Symphony could hardly have http://joshuabell.stormpages.com/articles/art1.html
Extractions: by Lawrence B. Johnson The Detroit Symphony could hardly have picked a better symbol for next week's opening of its new season than the vital spirit, the youthful outlook and the fully formed artistry of violinist Joshua Bell. If classical music is facing a crisis, the 30-year-old Bell, a native of Bloomington, Ind., represents the art's holistic path to recovery. From the precarious state of child prodigy, he has emerged as the genuine article, a true virtuoso - an artist who has earned his stripes and knows himself, no packaging required. Perhaps with some pride as a fellow native Hoosier, I've watched the flowering of Josh Bell's career since he won the Seventeen Magazine/General Motors violin competition at age 14. Shortly after Bell took that prize, in 1982, I heard him give a recital that had not just brilliance, but vision, stamped all over it. And lest this sound too much like sideline cheering from a home boy, I hasten to recall the reaction of another critical listener. Winning the Seventeen competition meant a performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra at a young people's matinee concert. But when conductor Riccardo Muti, then music director in Philadelphia, heard 14-year-old Josh, he converted the performance prize to a regular subscription weekend.
Extractions: Full Review Fritz Kreisler was perhaps the most important violinist of the early part of the 20th century, his musicianship and talent surpassing even the then dominant Eugene Ysaye. Although probably known best for introducing his own works under the name of composers from a bygone era, it is easy to forget the significance of Kreisler, the violinist. Kreisler had a true understanding of the violin, and it was with this knowledge that he composed. Consider his countless transcriptions and cadenzas for the violin, technical yet eloquent, absolutely masterpieces of their own (my favorite is the cadenzas for the Beethoven concerto). And that is why he remains an important figure in the violin world, because of his ability to bring out the intrinsic qualities of the instrument and the breadth of his contributions.

Joshua Bell This year, violinist joshua bell won his first Grammy® Award for his acclaimed recordingof a new violin concerto written for him by English composer Nicholas http://www.concertartist.info/bios/bell.html
Extractions: This year, violinist Joshua Bell Bernstein: West Side Story Suite celebrates the music of American composer Leonard Bernstein. The recording premieres the new title work for violin and orchestra based on the hit-filled score of the classic musical West Side Story, as well as special arrangements of four memorable Bernstein tunes and Bells first recording of the composers Serenade. With orchestrator William D. Brohn, Bell was intimately involved in the development of the Suite, for which he wrote his own cadenzas. Bell was also reunited with composer Corigliano who arranged "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide. Joshua Bell is an unabashed fan of Bernsteins music and like everybody else," grew up listening to West Side Story. The tunes are incredible, so memorable and so beautiful, and they have really worked their way into the consciousness of most Americans, even into Gap ads, he notes. Bernstein somehow managed to create a great musical, a score that is really on the level of the great works of classical music. It succeeds on every level, and so well that it seems almost wrong to classify it simply as a musical. He points out that the new Suite is the kind of project that is called crossover today, but that it is actually a lively part of the tradition of classical music. Bernstein, as a composer, was a genius, he continues, and West Side Story is the best of both worlds, in a way - classical and pop. When I revisited this music and we made the arrangement, I realized how subtle, complex and inventive the score was, in technical ways. The music seems to transcend the time in which it was created, and that is, by definition, a great classic.
