Product Description
In the search for the causes of and solutions to social problems, no social institution has been allocated such a central role as the family. Social Problems and the Family examines how `the family' is constituted both in explanations of social problems and in modes of state intervention. In doing so, it shows how public anxieties about the well-being of the family reveal normally implicit assumptions about the relationship between this institution and wider society.

The contributors consider some of the most controversial social policy issues in Britain today:

· domestic violence · child abuse · old age · mental health · juvenile delinquency · poverty and homelessness

In examining each of these social problems, the contributors address key definitional issues, assess traditional and alternative theoretical perspectives, and survey different modes of intervention. By exploring how notions of the `normal' family are framed in explanations of and interventions in social problems, the contributors show just how pervasive and complex is the state regulaton of the family in contemporary society.

With its illuminating interdisciplinary approach, Social Problems and the Family will be an essential textbook for students and practitioners in all fields of family-related social work, social policy and social science disciplines. It is a Course Book for The Open University course D311 Family Life and Social Policy.

Description:
In this paper we present an original model of sequential problem choice within scientific communities. Disciplinary knowledge is accumulated in the form of a growing tree-like web of research areas. Knowledge production is sequential since the problems addressed generate new problems that may in turn be handled. This model allows us to study how the reward system in science influences the scientific community in stochastically selecting problems at each period. Long term evolution and generic features of the emerging disciplines as well as relative efficiency of problem selection are analyzed. ... Read more

Description:
In the routing open-shop problem, jobs are located at nodes of a transportation network, and the machines travel on the network to execute jobs. For the makespan-minimizing two-machine routing open-shop problem on a two-node network (which is NP-hard) we prove that the optimum objective value of any instance lies within the interval [C~,65C~] and this interval is tight. C~ is a trivial lower bound on the optimum objective value. Based on this result, we obtain a linear time approximation algorithm for this problem with approximation ratio not greater than 65. From the tightness of the interval above it follows that this algorithm gives the best possible approximation in terms of C~. The problem is equivalent to a variant of the two-machine open-shop problem with batch setup times with two batches. ... Read more

Description:
In the routing open-shop problem, jobs are located at nodes of an undirected transportation network, and the machines travel on the network to execute jobs in the open-shop environment. The machines are initially located at the same node (depot) and must return to the depot after completing all the jobs. It is required to find a nonpreemptive schedule that minimizes the makespan. We prove that the problem is NP-hard even on a two-node network with two machines, and even on a two-node network with two jobs and m machines. We develop polynomial-time approximation heuristics and obtain bounds on their approximation performance. ... Read more

Description:
We consider an open-shop problem: n jobs have to be processed on m machines where each machine can process at most one job at a time and each job can be processed on at most one machine at a time. The processing times for all operations are given. Preemptions are allowed, that means each operation can be stopped and continued later on. The order of machines for job J"i is called machine order of job J"i, the order of jobs on machine M"j is called job order on machine M"j. In the case of an open-shop problem all machine orders and job orders have to be determined in such a way, that the average completion time is minimized. New models of scheduling problems with preemption are presented which base on models for problems without preemption. Because the considered problem is NP-hard, lower bounds and heuristics are developed. Computational experiments demonstrate the quality of the algorithms. For small numbers of jobs and machines the obtained results are also compared with the optimal solutions determined by an exact algorithm. ... Read more

Product Description
FROM THE INTRODUCTION: "This volume grew from a discussion by the editors on the difficulty of finding good thesis problems for graduate students in topology. Although at any given time we each had our own favorite problems, we acknowledged the need to offer students a wider selection from which to choose a topic peculiar to their interests. One of us remarked, `Wouldn't it be nice to have a book of current unsolved problems always available to pull down from the shelf?' The other replied `Why don't we simply produce such a book?' Two years later and not so simply, here is the resulting volume. The intent is to provide not only a source book for thesis-level problems but also a challenge to the best researchers in the field." ... Read more

Product Description
Throughout this book, we discuss some open problems in various branches of science, including mathematics, theoretical physics, astrophysics, geophysics etc. It is of our hope that some of the problems discussed in this book will find their place either in theoretical exploration or further experiments, while some parts of these problems may be found useful for scholarly stimulation. The present book is also intended for young physics and mathematics fellows who will perhaps find the unsolved problems described here are at least worth pondering. If this book provides only a few highlights of plausible solutions, it is merely to keep the fun of readers in discovering the answers by themselves. Bon voyage! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Florentin Smarandache's answer to the death of science
The rebel or outlaw scientist has been done before:
paradigm shifts will come.
Florentin Smarandache is somewhat ego driven, but he is brilliant
and he has some very smart friends.
He asks questions.
He is willing to admit that not everything is known or understood.
One thing is clear when "traditional" science rolls up the welcome mat to
new ideas, the ideas will go around.
If you need to be reassured that science isn't finished,
read these questions and articles. ... Read more
