Who edited this book?
Today my class did the first section of Practice TOEFL 6 from this book. In the first 30 questions, there were at least
4 typographical errors. Then we discovered that the answer key
in the back didn't match the test. I have been frustrated with this book in the past because of weak or inaccurate grammar explanations, but this was ridiculous. I really like the idea of a strategy-based TOEFL text, but this book seems like it would be more confusing than helpful. ... Read more

Helped me most-the best one for me
I got it and it helped me very much. All you have to do is read it. Professor Avants did a good job to help me. If a person cant write basic English, he shouldnt even try the TOEFL. He will never understand if his grammar is not good enough. This book gave the help I wanted for writing.
The symbols make so much sense if you just want help help help in writing !!!!
There arent magic formulas but this comes very close.
Then he puts them all in very easy examples to SHOW!!

Toefl Essay (TWE)
As a teacher of students who have English as a 3rd or even 4th language this has been very valuable as have all the TOEFL books I have ordered

I just simply don't get it, this book start with the essay pod (pattern of development), which is a horrendous way to say method. I'm already in the page 21 and I can't figure it out what a TR is or a TS mean, and the pod bases on that kind (many more) of abbreviations you can also found delta (or something like that, a triangle upward and downward, there is also some this delta/triangle in different sizes!) and pods depends on that.
Fist part of the book are so frustrating because is so wrongly faced, methods (pods) don't have to be short mathematical like formulas fulfill of TR, TS, ES ,... .
For example, the note of an example conclude with a annoying statement ".. If you fell lost, consult your patterns, and you have a ready-made formula ..." (page 21) the example actually was pretty good written an easy, but the readymade formula is at least silly portrayed, and that's the core of the essays tips (methods) the infamous pods.

Very Exact in Method
I recommend this book because it brings all the components together in the writing. For instance, it shows how to compare and contrast items in essays. That is the biggest thing on the TOEFL because we have to read and listen and then write an essay pointing out the likenesses and differences.

One of the best for TOEFL!
I used this book as a sole source to study for TOEFL (after browsing at least 4-5 others), did the tests from this book, Barron's TOEFL, Kaplan TOEFL, and the official ones and I got an excellent scorein the real exam (my English before taking the test was high-school level). It features only high-yield grammar topics and a very good listening-comprehension section. Extremely useful especially if you don't have much time to prepare for the exam (I had 3 weeks).

Waste of time and money
I bought this book because my teacher recommended me and i thought that the real toefl test would be easy. I took the test and i couldn't believe how different it was from the book.Now i changed my teacher and i do notrecommend the longman prep to anyone.If you really want to be preparedfor the test, practice with the ETS and see the difference.

A book that increases the score and shortens the time
I have been preparing students for TOEFL examinations for over 2 years and this is my number one book. Compared to Barron's , Peterson's or other preparation materials, Deborah Phillips' book gives the student the chanceto actually improve their scores by focusing on how to think and approachthe test. In the case of "Structure and written expression"section, for instance,the results were amazing. When doing the preliminarytest most of my students not only got wrong more than half of theexercices, but they were also unable to finish in time, which meant evenmore mistaken answers. Time is of crucial importance! After havingcompleted the preparation in this book, first, all of them managed tofinish in time and second, the number of errors dropped dramatically (from20 out of 40 to 10 and even 5). All my students have used this book and allhave scored above 550 in the TOEFL examination. It's been a valuable andindispensable instument for me and I highly reccomend it.

The course is a lot easier than the actual TOEFL test!
What a waste of money! After finishing the course, I was sure to get the 600 I needed, but to my astonishment, the actual test was a lot more difficult than the course!

An average TOEFL prep book with glaring weaknesses.
This TOEFL prep book does not adequately prepare advanced students for listening, grammar, or reading problems. The content in the listening and grammar sections is off-base. Worse is the reading section which containsreadings which are often less than one half the length of actual readingson the test. EXCELLENT way to prepare!
This combination package has been extremely helpful to my ESL students who are preparing to study in the States. I would highly recommend it to future TOEFL takers, particularly because of the excellent audio cds that help students develop their listening skills (typically a weak area for many English learners.)

Do not buy this book!
Do not buy this book! The only section you can use without audio cds is reading, and you know what it does not even have answers for reading sections.If you want to pay all your money just to buy the cd which comes with book then buy it :) it is waste of money.
p.s : i bought this book in my country and had to paid $110 for it.

Why should i buy this book?
The first time that i took toefl was so tough. i did not have idea what is going to look like. But, after i got my results i realized i can do this test better. i pland to buy a book and study for it. I am thanful to the author of this book
This is really good book. It provides clear, straightforward, and comprehensive comparison of Computer-Based TOEFL and Paper-Based TOEFL,explains clearly the examination policy, and contains four TOEFL practice tests designated to simulate the actual TOEFL computer-based test. The grammar material is really nicely arranged.

The book has pocket size, so you can carry it in traffic. With this book you can study whenever you have free minute. You do not need to sit at the computer, CD player would be sufficiently enough. Still the explanations are good enough to give you a real flavor of the Computer Based TOEFL and Paper-Based TOEFL

If you are busy person, if you do not have lots of time and money to prepare to the exam, this book is for you.

Good for English study, but insufficient for the TOEFL test
This book contains several useful ways to abound English vocabulary.BUT,vocabulary questions in the TOFEL test are all synonom questions,andmost of those in the test are academic words rather than daily-life words.The words in this book seems a bit far from toefl questions. If you haveonly short time left for preparing toefl, I would recommend otherdirectly-toefl-related vocabulary books like the one from Barron's.

Toefl book
very useful but it was second hand and came without cd so the oral part is missing.

Best Book for Beginners. TOEFL is ...
At first, let me introduce myself shortly. I'm a university student in Korea. In this semester, we are studying TOEFL for the first time. Our English professor strongly recommended this book and we accepted withoutdetail information. But we worried about TOEFL study because we didn't haveany time to study TOEFL. But this book provided much satisfaction for usduring the class. This book used easy words and interesting sentences forbeginners. Nevertheless, the sentence structure is very good. In addition,a three(3) piece of cassette tape is very useful for students to improvelistening ability. Also Vocabulary Appendix is very useful for me.Especially this book provided careful concern at the answer key by theadding the reasons. For example, Exercise 8A, 2. They live here since 1942.In this answer key, not only it was circled at error word "live"and be corrected to "have lived" but also underlined at hint word"since". Because of this, we can easily find the correct answerand understand. I convinced that you could promote your English in shorttime by this book. Also you can defeat the fear at TOEFL. Very good for structure
This book is very good for structuer and there are a lot of structure poins with test.

The best grammar book
Although a couple of geniuses might disagree, I feel compelled to advise them to take some grammar sessions especially with this book ,so they could learn that English must go with capital letters and must draw is not the same as mast draw, Obviously they do not know the facts about this excellent book. The flow chart style of this grammar book is the best I have ever seen so far. By the way I scored 280 on my second TOEFL test, from 240 on the first one. Cheers!! Go for it and get the book TOEFL takers ( if by any chance you are in Bogotá, Colombia. Take a few classes in Petersons Absolute Advantage. They are great for test preps, the best in Bogotá!! ) Cheers!!!!

Just a thought...
First of all I must say - I have not used this book. I'm not going to either. I've read the review of the person that gave this book 4 stars and said it taught him grammer. Well... with the number of mistakes he had in that little review this book couldn't have been too helpful. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going against that person or try to belittle him (god knows my english if far from being perfect), however I do think that after going through a whole book dedicated to grammer rules one should be able to consruct a full present-simple sentence without mistakes. Since I do not believe people are stupid the only conclusion I mast draw - this book is not that good.

Very helpful, but not sufficient
This book is very helpful for Toefl test-taker to understand the rule ofEnglish grammer. The first thing you have to do with this book is to takethe simulated test of Toefl grammer section. After it, you can check thepoint of grammer that you don't understand.

But in TOEFL, it is *NOT*enough to understand grammer rule. You must be accustomed to finding whatis questioned by the testers. So you have to practice with preparation kitpublished by ETS or other books simulating TOEFL test. The comination mightbe helpful for you.
