1-0 out of 5 stars SAT II World History
Contains only two practice exams without annotated answer key. Reader is directed by pg # back to the text for any explanation of the right answer only.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Prepare for the SAT II World History in right way
Great help to students - all nesessary information is compacted to one small book! Very useful and helping to improve your scores!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid book
I am using it currently for an alternate text book, but when i take the sat II for world history i assume it will be a solid choice

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect choice
I am a student from Romania and I studied for the test using *only* this book (I got 750). True, the dimensions of the book seem a bit overwhelming, but at least 90% of it is material which is necessary for the test. In fact, out of the 95 questions asked, there was one which wasn't answered by the book (which is a great ratio, I say: there were 94 covered by it). I also agree that some generalizations are not subtle, but that is exactly what a world history book is supposed to contain, parallels -justified or partly forced- between peoples and their cultures.

The practice tests are indeed over the level of the real SAT II, but I disagree with the Korean critic who implied that they are wrong (and that would mean that the book is bad). Yes, there are some questions needing interpretation and maybe ones with more correct answers, but that happens in the real test too. I think it is better this way (and the mistakes aren't numerous).

I recommend it to anyone curious about world history, not only SAT II trainees. The book is just a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I recently scored an 800 on the sat II world History. I took one year of honors history and began studying from this book a few days before the test. The actual exam was far easier than the tests in the Barron's book. If you are halfway intelligent all that is needed to ace this test, is a couple of days of cramming. Two of my friends, who are only B students in history, each spent 1 day studying, and both recived above a 780. This test is a joke, so unless you are retarded, serious studying is unnecessary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Math Score Went Up!
My Son was able to increase his score in Math by 30pts which brought us over the top! He liked the book and said the strategy was easy to follow. Worth the bucks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but bot as good as expected.
Overall the book helped me to look at math problems in a different way and was very clear in its explanations. The only problem that I had was that many of the tips were common sense or too time consuming. But if you are scoring very low on the math portion then this book can really help you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent SAT math prep book!!
We got this book two months before my son needed to take his first SAT, but didn't actually sit down to read it until the week before his SAT. He did a practice math test and scored fairly low, IMHO. We studied the book together and worked through the examples given using the various tips/techniques given in the book. (A neighbor heard us studying and referred to this as *loophole training*!) =) When he took another practice math test at the end of the week, he did MUCH better. (My only complaint is the typos that exist in the book, but I guess this IS a math book after all. If it were a book to help in writing, I'd really object to the typos!)

He took the actual SAT on June 5, so while we don't yet have his results back, he came out of the test fairly confident that he met his personal SAT math goal/score! If he did, in fact, meet his initial goal, we'll increase that goal by 100 pts for the October test and restudy this book! This time, however, we'll work at it throughout the summer instead of waiting for the last possible week!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review book
I got this book for my daughter, who wasn't taking her upcoming SATs too seriously. After some prodding, she went through it and admitted it was pretty good (although she did find some typos, which annoyed her--the only reason I'm not awarding 5 stars). She got her SAT results and, despite taking NO practice tests or doing anything to prepare except for going through most of this book, she scored an 800 on the math section. What more could I ask for?

5-0 out of 5 stars 800
I recently took the SAT and while I'm pretty good at math, this book is pretty much the whole reason I got an 800 on my math section. Funny and very straight forward. It definitely helps readjust your perceptions of the SAT and the questions on the Test. Power to the Lazy Student. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars old calendar
I made a mistake.I do not want a 2008 calendar - I want a 2009 calendar. How do I return this and get what I really wanted.I am surprised in November, they would even have 2008 calendars available - who would want it? I hope you can help me.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's just paper version
Don't expect too much...Although I prefer this Calendar version than online one...it's just pages and pages of exercises with answers. They have place to put details...they just want you go to their website! Doesn't work too much as a real Calendar and kind of poorly made by a plastic lightblue frame. In all, if you are too lazy to go online and don't always need the details(i simply only use dictionary...), i'd recommend it if it's in a low price.

4-0 out of 5 stars JC
Interesting questions and answers but if you are not sure how they got the answer, they want you to go to their website. Would have been nice if they provided a little more info on the calendar instead.

The calendar is a nice way to get a good feeling of the types of questions that will be included in the actual test.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's choice
I brought home from the library a couple dozen 2009 SAT preparation books for my daughter to choose from as she gets ready to take the SAT in Oct. She just finished Math B and wants to take the Math part of the SAT ASAP while the material is fresh in her head.

Her first reaction to this book was, "Ewwwwww! McGraw Hill writes my textbooks! I definately don't want that one!"...but after she reviewed a couple chapters in the other books, she chose this one to buy.

The difference that I noticed is that this one offers a couple pages of material to read, then a page of questions about the concepts presented, and then a page of problems to solve using those concepts. The next couple pages explain the correct answers.

Sometimes my daughter had trouble with understanding the correct answer to a question. All but one time when she asked for my help, it was because of a typo. Interestingly, the 2010 and 2009 editions had the same typos. I saw no differences between the two editions except the covers, though I did not fully compare them. I have read at several websites that recent editions of SAT preparation books are practically the same as current editions. I insisted on her using the most recent edition because I wanted to be sure she didn't miss an important change. I haven't noticed any changes at all.

My daughter took the math sections of a practice SAT before she started using this book. She is spending a week on each chapter. She took a practice SAT after using 2 of the 6 math chapters. Her score went up 100 points! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars This is an exceptional study guide
I got this book to help me prepare for the SAT math section and i think it is very good except the fact that the problems on there are so hard, i felt like this book was more of a challenge than the actualy SAT math. I think what they did was get the hardest concepts and problems and combined it together to make a study guide so you can practice ways to solve it when you encounter a similar situation on the actual test. The explanations are handy so if you miss a quesiton, you know HOW to do it right. I didn't use this book alone to help me study since i used at least 3 other books but i would recommend this to some who are looking for challenge. Personally, i like Barron's but that's just my opinion. I found the format of this book to be a bit tedious and boring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good SAT Math study material

Product Description
The totally restructured SAT college entrance exam that became effective in 2005 includes an entirely new and very important Writing Test, which consists of two main parts. First is a 25-minute period during which students must write an essay on a given topic. Later, students must answer multiple-choice questions that test their skill in correcting poorly-written sentences, finding mistakes in grammar and usage, and correcting mistakes in the first-draft version of a student essay. This manual familiarizesstudents with all aspects of the SAT Writing Test and presents review chapters and questions with answers that are designed to hone test-takers' skills. Also included is a helpful overview of the Writing Test and details on how student essays are scored. This manual presents five writing tests. The first introduces students to the test's format and the following four are similar to the actual SAT writing test in length and question types. All tests have answers and explanations, and come with instructions on how students can convert their practice test score to the familiar SAT scale of 200-800. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST THING BARRON'S HAS EVER MADE
I got a 2400, and I am pretty sure it was due to this book.On the writing section, I had gotten every multiple choice correct... and I got a 9/12 on my essay.I still got the 800, by some stroke of luck on the curve. This book targets specific grammar exercises in each section, so you become adept at recognizing the specific problems in every sentence. There is a plethora of multiple choice practice; I did not even complete the whole workbook.

However, this points to one drawback: this book really cannot teach you how to write well on the essay. It only can offer you a few tips, and an example of two, but self-imposed practice is the way to go, and have others read your writing afterwards.

I RECOMMEND this book if you need hardcore prepping for multiple choice. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this book if you are great on multiple choice (if you are, I admire you), and need to hone your essay skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good SAT Book to Own
I took an immediate liking to this book from the excellent overview with its pertinent, wise advice, to the inclusive index at the end, a feature not included in all SAT workbooks. Of the collection of SAT books on my shelf, this entry from Barron's is the one I use most often for supplementary practice and reinforcement.

Barron's approach is to give much practice on writing and evaluation essays while providing much practice in specific components of the essay like main idea, supporting details, sentence variety, and parallel structure.
The grammar section is wonderful because it touches on all the types of errors typically found in the SAT writing section. Plenty of practice is provided for the student. (Note that I just used the passive voice, an unacceptable sin on the SAT.)

The design and layout of the book are very good, and the font is very readable. In other books of this type I've encountered multiple errors (unintended) in the practice tests, and questionable "correct" answers with which my students and I have had issue.I'd like to see a better analysis of incorrect answers with a breakdown by specific topics. For example, it would be helpful to pinpoint areas needing practice such as pronoun agreement or comparisons.

Looking for just one SAT writing workbook? I'd suggest this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book.
The book is the same as described. I found it very helpful for preparing to SAT test. Amazon's delivery as usually is very fast. But be ready to handle the book very carefully as if it is an antique book because of very poor paper quality! I keep it in its original postal package all the time in order not to tear pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book to have
When i take self SAT Exam,I get 100 point more by doing all problem of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Workbook!Buy it now!
I purchased this workbook because i got a 500 in my writing section of the SAT. It has some typos here and there but they are only blemishes to anyone who can read.

Be warned: this is A LOT of work. If you don't have at least a month an a half in advance to prepare for the SAT, don't buy this book. You won't get through it. On the other hand, if you prepare well this gem will improve your scores dramatically. There are rewards for every minute of studying that you do with this book.

I was getting mid 500s in the writing section of the blue book SAT practice test; now, after going through this whole book, i am in the high 600s-I'm hoping to break the 700s threshold on the real SAT!

This book will benefit most those who have never studied grammar in depth. My education has been interrupted continuously and as a result my English has suffered. This book has TAUGHT me so many things.

and by the way... this is a GRAMMAR workbook; expect to be bored out of your brains. But as i have said, there are rewards for those who go through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars another 5 star review
I looked up this book to recommend to a cousin of mine who's thinking of taking the BioSATII test and I when I saw the one star reviews I was compelled to comment. I agree completely with all the 5 star ratings from high scorers. I scored a 790 on my SATII back in 2003 and used this book to prepare for the AP exam as well (for which I recieved a score of 5). In my opinion, this is the best bio test prep book on the market. It's organized and detailed and it doesn't skimp out on the information it provides. The practice test questions are more similar to real questions than most test books and are generally more difficult than the real thing - meaning that when you actually take the test you will happily score better than on your practice runs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Has its merits and demerits but essential for the test
I only had a one-hour-per-week biology class this year, but scored a 780 on SAT2 Biology M, which I think is quite OK. First, I studied the Princeton book, then the Kaplan book, and it was not two weeks before the test that I actually got the Barron's.
[TOO DETAILED?]The Barron's book is quite detailed, and the details are NECESSARY for the test. For example, only the Barron's book introduced the enzyme lactase and the disease coronary thrombosis, which both showed up on my test. Then again, some of the details were quite useless; for instance, the book needlessly focuses on diseases. There are unnecessary parts concerning "The Conquest of Diseases" and so on. As for me, I only read "Types of heart diseases" (150) and "Other diseases not caused by germs" (152) and that was enough. I think the part about alcohol and tobacco is just too much detail
[LACK OF DETAIL] To my surprise, there were parts that completely lacked detail. On the part about kidneys, the book didn't even mention aldosterone or how the medulla of the kidney gets saltier--this was looked at with the most details in the Princeton book.
I studied only about two thirds or three fourths of the book: the rest, I just skimmed or only solved the problems at the end of each chapter(by the way, these problems are useful and point-by-point) I kinda ignored the alcohol-tobacco part and the disease part, but those parts, like I said above, don't matter that much. I'm sorry that I couldn't finish the book--I could've got a higher score.
So, what I'm saying is, BUY THE BOOK, BUT DON'T RELY ON IT ONLY.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best test prep book I've ever used
This has been all-around the best and most helpful book I've ever used to prepare for a standardized test. It is extremely informative, well-organized, and easy to read. However, the most helpful features are the section reviews at the end of each chapter and the self-evaluation charts at the end of the practice tests. The former are great sets of practice questions to put your knowledge to the test, and the latter are excellent tools for pinpointing exactly where your problem spots are, fixing those weak areas, and thus greatly improving your scores. Biology is far from my best subject but after studying with this book for a while I feel completely confident for the exam. I tried using Kaplan's book on the same subject at first but found it to be quite dull. I think this is a much better alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Test Prep
My son used this book to prapare for the Biology M SatII exam and received a very respectable 710 (out of 800) on the test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ugghhhh
I think this review book is HORRIBLE. First, it is extremely detailed. It goes into so much detail that is useless since none of it shows up on the exam. Second, it is a very boring book. It is pretty self-explanatory, it does not do it too well, but it is good enough. But how is someone supposeed to get through this book with all of its detail if they fell asleep everytime they opened the book. I fell asleep more than 15 times. Well its good i got another review book for this sat II or else i think i may have failed it. Thanks to princeton review, i knew all the material on the back of my head.
I do not recomend this book one bit; many teacher recommend it, but as a student i say: dont waste your parents money on this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good practice, but frustrating....
This thing seemed to have it all - practice questions, exams, vocab, tactics, etc. However, this book is WAY harder than any of the other books(including the official PSAT booklet that you get when you pay/register for your exam) and the actual PSAT exam. I got a 197 as my highest score out of the 3 tests I took so far out of this book. However, I also have a 2008 edition of 11 SAT/PSAT practice tests from princeton, and I got a 219 out of that book. ??????????? although some people might argue that it'll "toughen you up" for the real PSAT, I think it just discourages students like me from studying harder and setting high initial goals. Also, there are no explanations whatsoever to the numerous practice reading exercises and it is very frustrating because I completely don't understand some of them; I could probably even argue with whoever wrote this book about a few questions. There actually are quite a few errors even in this 2006-2007 13th edition, so overall, I suggest getting a princeton or kaplans book. they seem to be much more supportive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looks good, but really is a waste of a tree
This book is so much worse than the Princeton Review it's amazing. The typos are so bad that in the practice tests' answer sheets, the 2nd math section is missing the bubbles for the (e) answer choice! So I had to make my own little bubble while taking the tests.

The tests also seem to be unbalanced. My score on them went way up from the diagnostic and then by the 6th test was back down to almost my original diagnostic score! Very VERY depressing. Until I picked up the princeton book and aced the practice tests in there, I was feeling like I was going to do horribly

The practice tests are also WAY harder than the actual test, although they are a lot of practice, even with the errors, so this is the book's only saving grace.

The explanations are horrible compared to the princeton review's, and the writing section is particularly apalling. It does not even attempt to help you! It has bad advice, and no, i repeat no, coverage of the grammar you'll need to know.

I'm so glad I got the princeton review book just in time to go through before the PSAT, it was so much better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors, unrealistic.
Okay, at first glance, this book looks great.7 tests (one of which is a diagnostic), compared to the other new PSAT books' 2 or 3, and a giant vocab list, holy crap - MUST BUY, right?

NO.This book has tons of errors, and yes, I am talking about the 12th edition released in 2004.I'm talking like ~2-6 completely wrong answers a test, and even more typos and wrong underlining, which is extremely frustrating, especially under timed conditions. It's the TWELFTH EDITION for christ's sake. Also, this book covers some math that is not on the real test, and is overall, known to be way harder than the PSATS actually are.You will get ~40 points lower than you should, which is not necessarily a good thing. The errors and the crappy questions are the cause for the low score, not because it is "challenging" you and is making you a better test taker by giving tough questions.Do not buy. It's a waste of your time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Are the Reviews For the Wrong Book Here?
All of these reviews are for the absolutely wrong edition of this book! This book came out only a few months ago in 2004, and these are 2003 and past reviews. Hello? Amazon.com is really slipping here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practice for the PSAT's
I agree somewhat with what other the reviewers said that "this book has too many errors," and it does have a lot of erros. However, I don't think that there is another PSAT book on the market that parralels all the things in this book. First of all, the writers went into great detail about all the question types and there were TONS of practice problems and a test to review each question type to diagnose your weak areas. Then there was a 1300 word vocabulary list and a succint PSAT high frequency word list. There was even roots to help with unfamiliar words that you may encounter on the day of the test. And lastly but not leastly--there were 10 practice tests. This is probably the best PSAT, SAT, and even SATII:Writing book that there is out there. The mistakes are nothing compared to the breadth of knowledge and tips that this book provides. This book is definitly worth every last penny. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivers what it promised
One practice test for each subject test; the real deal (number of questions, content of questions, etc).

Just so you know - the tests in this book and in the other book (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0874477573/104-2444460-6868746?v=glance&n=283155&s=books&v=glance)
Despite having different covers and publishing dates contain the same tests
So don't drop an extra 13 bucks on the other book.

But like I said, completely worthwhile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outdated edition!!!
I purchased this book to help my child decide which Subject Tests to take next year. This edition still includes the English Writing Test which is no longer an option. This edition was published in 2000, which makes me wonder how current the test information is. Don't waste your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, But Probably Not Worth Buying...
I used this book to help me out for my SAT II tests for Writing, Physics, and Math Level IIc. The practice tests in this book are actual SAT II tests used in previous years. I found the difficulty level and types of questions in this book to be very close to the actual test. This was a good thing because I used practice tests in other books that were much more difficult than the real thing as well as online tests that were much too easy.

However, I must warn you, it probably will not be worth your money to actually purchase this book. The tests are excellent but there is only ONE TEST for each subject so it may not be worth buying, especially if you only are taking one or two tests. Also I should note that the answers are given but there are no explanations.

You are better off trying to borrow this book from your library or school. It may be wiser to buy a subject-specific book for each individual test you are taking, although for some of the less-taken tests this may be the only help you can find.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not enough number of examples
This book contains 22 past actual SAT II administrations in all of the 18 subjects. It is unequivocally a must source for those studying for the SAT II; very useful for timed, full-length mock tests to conduct on your own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't live up to 10 Real SATS
This book while providing one example of each SAT II subject test is not nearly as comprehensive nor as useful as 10 Real SATs.With so many tests in one edition, there is little information on each test. Also, with only one practice test per subject, after you familiarize yourself with the types of questions you're already out of practice material.I don't recommend buying it, but if you're going to take the regular SATs I definately reccommend 10 Real SATs for your review. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Never used this product...
Was never able to motivate myself enough to actually open this book, but from what my friends tell me, it's pretty good. The CD in the made for an excellent firework show in my microwave.Four stars for the fireworks show.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great quality, but some errors
As a Spanish tutor, I have to say that this book's best feature is its Listening Comprehension CD. I have used this book to help prepare students of all levels to better understand the Spanish language. The listening comprehension guides are perfect for anyone--from an advanced student to a beginner.. In addition, the practice tests are amazing for their quantity, not necessarily their quality. The downside to this book is that there are several typos and errors that a novice student wouldn't catch. Overall, it is a good book to use, but use it with the supervision of a Spanish teacher or tutor as you may not be able to notice some of the errors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Este libro es maravilloso!
I bought this book about one month before my SAT II: Spanish test. The main reason that I bought it was for the practice tests; I've found that being acquainted with the format calms my nerves and (hopefully!) allows me to concentrate more on the content than the format. The book has ten practice exams that are fairly comparable in difficulty to the actual test. I took four of the practice exams and received about a 78-80 raw score on all of them, which translates into the 750-800 range as the scaled score. On the real SAT II, I scored a 760, which I expected due to my scores on the practice exams. I glanced through the grammar review and vocabulary, and it seems to be well laid out and informative. I tended not to dwell on it because, being in AP Spanish Language, I hoped that I knew enough of the information to spare myself of the extra studying. Overall, I thought the book truly helped me score better and it was a great predictor of my score - which is helpful if you're debating whether to take the actual exam or not because you are afraid of what your score might be. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering taking the SAT II: Spanish test.

4-0 out of 5 stars In-depth Review and Practice
I used this book to review for the SAT II during a study period at school. The grammar review is 60 solid pages, and so it takes some time to get through it and learn it, even if you are a good Spanish student. I studied this book for months before taking the test. Be warned that this book will not help you get a great score unless you put a lot of time in studying it (or you already know the material). However, it really does have everything you need to score well.

I think the practice tests were slightly harder than the real thing, but they were fairly close. Just a week before the actual test I got a 670 on a practice test. Then, on the actual test, I got a 710. This really isn't much of a difference when you take into account the range of SAT II scores that accompany any score.
Rather than including an exact scoring guide after every practice test (which would have been nice, but unrealistic), the book has directions on calculating your raw score and then one chart which gives a range of scores to match the range your raw score fell into. (The only soure of SAT IIs that have actually been given in previous years is, of course, "Real SAT IIs," published by the College Board.)

There were some typos in the book. I found a few in the grammar review and one or two in practice test answer keys. None of them were terrible, but if you think that the book is incorrect about something it may very well be. Overall, I good book to study, especially if you have a lot of time before the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!!!!!
I took the test in November 2001 and bought this book a week before it and the test was way easier than the practice tests seemed to show, and when i finally received my scores, i was amazed, i got an 800 a perfect score, seriously all the books on the Barrons publishins company do help a lot, the same i can say for the Writing test. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to rate at this time
At this time, I cannot rate this service except to say that the ording process was easy. I ordered this book for my grandson who is currently serving in the Middle East. His location recently changed and was told his mail would be forwarded to his new post. I assume his relocation is the reason he hasn't received the book as of this date (one month later). It sometimes takes 4-6 weeks for delivery. Will rate this when I have confirmation of the delivery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful if you are aprehensive about the SAT
There is a lot of useful information in this book. It gets you into the minds of the people who create these tests which is very useful. The problem that students have with the SAT is that it looks like a regular high school test, but a hard one.

The truth is the it is not a Scholastic Math test or a Scholastic Reading test or a Scholastic English test. It is a Scholastic REASONING test. Completely unlike anything the student has ever taken.

It's much more like the puzzles you used to get with the Sunday Newspaper Magazine. Once a student really gets this, the SAT becomes much less threatening.

This book can get you into a frame of mind that will let you do really well on the SAT. You already know everything you need to know to do well on the test. This book can get you to understand that

3-0 out of 5 stars Easiest to read of SAT books but a few mistakes
I used this book to help a foreign student study for the SAT.I had successfully used the GRE for Dummies book myself and found it to be far superior to the other dry, boring, overlong test books. This book is structured similarly. What I like about it is its straight-forward talk.It gets right to the point in easy-to-understand language and even some humor -- something that's sorely missing from other test-prep books.Particularly helpful are the vocabulary words sprinkled throughout the book.Reading the words in context is far more useful than a long list of words to memorize.

What was disappointing were the errors in some of the examples and sample test questions. This book needs to be edited thoroughly and reissued, and then it would be worthy of a higher rating.

I would still recommend the book with caution. The information in the book is definitely useful for verbal and math refreshers. However, I'd recommend taking sample tests from another source.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
My son and a friend are in the other room right now, taking the practice test.I'm dreading grading them because you can't trust that the answers in the book are right!Too bad it's too late for me to go out and get 2 different books.Just fyi, here are the mistakes we found (2002 edition)

    1. Pg. 288, #11 (Answer should be A)
    2. Pg. 125, top problem (She wrote + then multiplied.)
    3. Pg. 188, the problem has many typos (Should be (1/(1/x))+1=11

4-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Prctice Tests
This is a good book for preparation, but the practice tests are completely unlike the real ones.I took one one here, got a 1025.Compare that to a 1200 I took, with no extra preparation on a real test! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book!
Before reading this book, I had spent hundreds of hours taking practice SAT exams and reading the classic 500 page books on the SAT. However, I was unable to improve my reading score. When I took the SAT reading the first time, I got a 630, which was a disappointment. After reading this over the summer, along with more practice, my score went up to 740. I'm sure this book was crucial in that improvement, and I will be eternally thankful.

I am currently a happy student at Stanford University!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Great
People who review books without reading them must have some ulterior motive. I found the "Camouflage Airy Persiflage" advice in the Strategy Section invaluable and I certainly would have never figured out this approach on my own. This book is so much more creative than the other books I looked at it's not even funny. Well, actually it is (the book I mean).

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart learning
This prep book actually has cartoons that are funny. And the authors are pretty amusing considering the subject matter. But the good news is that the content has the potential to help you score higher on the writing section. The tips made me think about different ways to approach the writing prompts. As they say, you have to be unafraid to "Take the Shot." No mooncalfing. No lollydolling. Save that for your sweetheart. Buy this book now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Confidence Builder With Value Plus
If you don't want to overwhelm your SAT candidate with GIANT books filled with scary tests, use this book as a stepping stone. It's small enough to fit into a back pocket, has an encouraging tone and will help with motivation. It is not enough for the SAT's by itself, but it is a good baby step to build confidence to move into the bigger books. Most students can handle 3 minutes and once they are successful--are willing to move into more substantial study time.Overall, good warmup book to prepare students to learn.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
As a tutor I bought this book thinking I could use it for some of my students. The book is too short and what there is consists of vague generalizations, and cutesy comments. Some of the quotes are funny, but there is too little of substance to justify buying this over the many other SAT books available. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good for SAT I Writing test, too
I'm a private SAT tutor(have been for 6+ yrs) and have gone through almost every brand of SAT prep book on the shelf. When it comes to writing, Barron's is hands down the most comprehensive.Maybe it's not as "fun" but it's well organized and separates the rules out, and doesn't skim through everything as the Kaplan / Princeton books do (which are spotty-- some of their sections are good, others not so much). In terms of covering participles and comparisons-- this is definitely my favorite.

When the prep companies adapted to the new SAT I, many of them took the prep from the SAT II Writing, pared it down significantly, and lumped it with math and reading comp in a big book of all the sections-- but this pared down version (particularly Kaplan's eesh) is not comprehensive enough. Thus I still pull out the SAT II Writing book-- I think a few of the companies finally have put longer SAT I Writing books on the shelf, but even with its age, this one's still relevant. And my students can get it used for under $5!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
I used this book in preparation for the PSAT and the new SAT. I haven't received my SAT score yet, but I received an 80 on the writing section of the PSAT. Honestly, I think this is an excellent study guide! Even if you're good at English, this in-depth book shows you what to look for when answering questions. I HIGHLY recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your key to a 700+
Words cannot express the level of gratitude that I have for this book. Before using this book, I was not exactly the greatest writer: I was getting low scores on the SAT writing tests, and my english papers were chock-full of grammatical errors. However, after I used this book, I've noticed that my papers are so much more organized and grammar-free, and the style of writing is more enticing. My writing sounds more intelligent. To top it off, I got a 720/800 on the SAT II writing test, which is not bad even for Harvard. This book has helped me so much. Thank you, Barrons!

2-0 out of 5 stars Wouldn't recommend Barrons...
The best thing about this book was the section it devoted to the essay portion of the test. It gave great examples of good essays and bad essays, what to avoid and what to exercise when writing your essay. BUT, the review for the other two sections was shotty. It gave decent overviews of grammar, but it doesn't give any practice questions... AT ALL. Only exercises that make you write and are extremely boring. I got a 700 on this test, which is a decent score, but I barely looked at this book because I thought it was just so boring, and I doubt I would have done much better if I did.

4-0 out of 5 stars 700+ SAT/SAT II Scores ARE Possible
    (...)

Do books like this help? When I attended a decent public high school, we were told that outside preparation was a good way to spend a lot of time and money on statistically insignificant returns. This doesn't bother private high school students I've met recently. I don't know if preparation has improved, or if the "cost" side of cost/benefit inhibits them less. Familiarity with the format and grounding in tactics has got to be worth something.

I think Lance Armstrong likes to ride the course before the Tour de France starts. His margin of victory is statistically insignificant, but it seems to work for him.

In rebuttal to another reviewer's comments: You *can* improve your ability to write essays (assuming there's room for improvement to begin with). I'm coaching a student whose essays just improved dramatically after she studied the tactics recommended by the Princeton book (e.g. add some literary or historical references). Of course some essay topics are easy to get one's teeth into, others are intractable, and we can't tell how she'll feel about the one the test puts in front of her--but she has a better template to work with than she did before.

Not bad, eh? I think I tossed this together in 20 minutes or less, with an illustrative reference to sports! I've had more practice than my student, but improvement is possible! ... Read more

The expanded new edition of this SAT test preparation aid employs humor to help students strengthen their vocabulary. It uses cartoons to focus on word meanings and their usage. 300 cartoon illustrations familiarize students with words they are almost certain to encounter when they take the SAT. Each cartoonÂ's visual pun serves as a memory aid that relates to the target wordÂ's meaning. Every word-related cartoon includes both a definition and three sample sentences to demonstrate how the word is used in standard contexts. To reinforce memory retention, a set of SAT-style sentence completion exercises follows every group of 12 cartoons. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Making SAT Vocab Come to Life
As an academic tutor, I have purchased this book numerous times for my SAT students. Everyone knows SAT vocab can be rather painful--to say the least. Picture These SAT Words helps visual learners not only understand the definition of hard vocabulary words, but also associate each word with a visual cartoon. Each cartoon relates to the sound of its vocabulary word, so retrieving the cartoon from memory becomes relatively easy with word association. I recommend this resource to any student that finds visual association helpful when studying. Some of the cartoons are rather humorous, which never hurts the memorization process!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memorable pictures and puns guarantee quick recall
Reviewer: Sue Alpaugh, English teacher from New Jersey
I was very pleased with my students' responsiveness to Philip Geer's book Simon's Saga, and with its effectiveness as a tool for learning and recalling the meanings of advanced words.

Recently I've been trying out Picture These SAT Words! and its flashcards with my classes. The pictures and accompanying puns that integrate the sound links for word recall are very creative and funny. My students really like the zany ideas behind them, and also appreciate the rhythm and rhyme of the puns. Another excellent thing about this method is that the sound link itself comes as close as it possibly can to the actual sound of the word.

One favorite is the difficult word "iconoclastic." The sound link is Ike Kono's class. The picture shows a teacher, Mr. Ike Kono, writing on a blackboard. His students are seen being "iconoclastic" (attacking cherished traditions). One student is sticking pins into a small Santa Claus doll. Others are raising their hands to suggest the abolishment of schools, tests, and Thanksgiving. The pun below the picture reads: Iconoclastic students in Ike Kono's class.

Another example that really amuses my students is "soporific," another difficult word which means "marked by sleepiness." The sound link given is soap horrific. The picture shows an alert old man sitting in a bathtub scrubbing himself, surrounded by little devils and snakes rising up out of the water. On the floor in front of the tub is a discarded soap wrapper upon which is written "soap horrific."From the bathroom door two old ladies look in on this scene. One says "He used to fall asleep in the bath until he tried Soap Horrific."The pun below the picture reads: He isn't soporific when he uses Soap Horrific.

As with Simon's Saga, I would rate Picture These SAT Words! and Picture These SAT Words in a Flash very highly as advanced vocabulary building tools. The book teaches 300 important SAT words, and the box of flashcards is a selection of 200 from the book. Both are fun and both have their advantages. The book has excellent exercises after each unit that reinforce the sound link and ensure that the words are learned. The set of flashcards offers the added dimension of fun and games.

    3-0 out of 5 stars 10 REAL SATs1
The Book is a copy of something. Also, the tests are 90's exams which is prior to the 2005 format change at College Board.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timely delivery, good quality
The book arrived on time as I expected. It was in really good condition. I already started to use the book, and it is awesome. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent study guide
I took my SATs the first time without this book and did not do bad, but it could have been better. I bought this book and studied it, then took my SATs again. My scores went up dramaticaly and I had a better understanding of my answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now Officially worthless.
This book is now officially worthless because there will be no more old SAT test taking. Do not buy this book if you have or are a son or daughter taking the SAT. The same goes for all non New SAT. Anything that is NEW SAT is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book!
The real strength in this book is the practice tests. They are literally the real thing. There is no better way to raise your score.Though I do recomend another book with this one to raise your vocabulary and such.I recomend it for everyone and, being a seventh grader, think this book is perfect for anyone in any grade.I raised my score from an 1130 to a 1350! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars 17 year old high school student.
So I've been reading the 5 start reviews, and then the few that say the reviews were made up, or whatever. I decided, to test this out myself, and mind you, I am an independent consumer, as a teenager, and the SAT Subject Tests are this Saturday, 5/1/10, f.y.i.. This book was about.. ~15.00 including tax, so I was hoping for it to be more effective than the Math portion on the large 1000-page SAT books by Princeton, Gruber's, etc.. I'm about half way done reading/studying this book, which is ~157 pages. It has many sections, and has a 1 page introduction, 1 page 8-10 multiple choice question, and another with solutions to that, with some explanation. So, about 3 pages per topic. It's a very brief outline, and tells you which formulas, etc.. to use. It also includes a few operations you can do on your graphing calculator (I have a TI-84 SE, which matches). I have to say that this author tries to get to the main points of the section, and does a good job, to be honest. The practice problems, aren't very challenging. They touch upon that part of the subject, and that's about it. Maybe 3-4 are tricky. Overall, I'm a bit ... meh about this book. There needs to be a bit more than 10 practice problems per section, since I've proven to myself, that many difficult problems with concise and elaborate solutions tend to bolster one's knowledge by a long shot. I just don't believe that a book with one part of the SAT and ACT, should cost as much as any other SAT book on Amazon that cost just about the same price...

Final judgment: NOPE, a bit disappointed.. no 5-stars. I am pretty reasonable, but the price of this book isn't. ;|

You're going to have to know the material before you buy this book. This book doesn't necessarily teach, it skims. I don't believe it's worth the price-tag. I've learned/been helped more by going to my local library to borrow separate books on Geometry/Algebra/Trig/Pre-Calc. To be ready for such a test in a short time, they have smaller versions of their books(cram sessions), but if you really wanna do well on tests such as this, longer and more detailed books are going to help a bit more, since studying for more than just a week before the test isn't really smart at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Believe it or Not
"Believe it or Not," this book has only 157 pages, but I must agree with the two previous reviewers: it is excellent, and I will be recommending it to all my students. The book offers the math basics required for the tests in the best and most user-friendly form I have encountered in many years helping students with these exams.

The pages do not contain lots of dense text, and the illustrations and key facts are presented more clearly than any of the other books I have used. Each of the seven chapters contains several pages of explanation, a page or so of problems, and solutions to the problems immediately following the problems, so one does not have to jump back and forth from problems to answers and explanations.

The author wisely takes the reader / student back to middle school math for a quick review of basic concepts. He also offers very clear instructions on how to plug problems into the scientific calculator (it looks like the TI-83or 83+ to me).

Two final very positive features are the list of websites for more information and practice tests and the websites to report errors in the book and see the errata posted. This last feature is a wonderful advance from the early Kaplan 2400 (with many misprints) and The Official SAT of 2009 that included a printed insert of errata.

If one needs more practice, one can always buy a book of practice tests and preparation material, and lug around almost 1000 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST ACT/SAT Study Guide on the Market!
Before reading this book, I was lost on the ACT/SAT.The types of questions, especially on the math portion, always confused me.I bought book after book, but most them helped very little.I tried Kaplan's programs, however they often simply frustrated me more with little change in my scores. Finally, I found The Math Study Guide and it blew me away. The way things are explained in this book make the ACT/SAT much less scary. Each test (ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests) has its own section with hints, tips and examples for which ever test you're studying for. These come in really handy when taking the test, and they definitely boosted my score.I believe that it is because of this book that I did so well on the ACT and am going to college.

In short, Mr. Corn did a fantastic job at making an ACT/SAT study book which is approachable, friendly and is packed full of information which will help anyone struggling with math on the ACT/SAT raise their score. I cannot recommend this product enough! A++

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
As an experienced test preparation coach, I know first-hand how hard it is to find accurate and thorough material for students to use. Richard Corn's book streamlines math preparation by putting all the information in a single book, rather than tackling each test (SAT, ACT, SAT Math Subject tests) separately. As an experienced tutor himself, Corn is meticulous about updating his book regularly to accurately reflect the content and difficulty of the math problems tested. Each subject is reviewed in roughly two pages, followed by practice problems and explanations. It is efficient and effective. Besides the 'real' test books (The Official SAT Study Guide and The Real ACT Test Prep Guide), this is the only book I recommend to students who need a solid math overview. ... Read more
