5-0 out of 5 stars A father's opinion
I bought this book for my daughter and think it's excellent. There are lots of sample problems ranging from easy to difficult.Answers contain explanations which is what I really find helpful(although explanations are not always easy to understand).I haven't seen other books, but I don't feel like I need to look.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good assessment from what I can tell...
I haven't delved into it yet, but it looks good and complete and will definitely help when I have to re-take the SAT (I'm 28 friggin years old!) next month.*grumble*But the product was good and will serve me well I think.

4-0 out of 5 stars Real SATs? NOT!
The problem here is that these arePrinceton Review exams that are similar to the SATs, but not as well-written (nor as hard) as those prepared by the pros at ETS. Plus, the explanations for the verbal answers are not terribly edifying (the math answers are OK.) Princeton's own Cracking the SATs is a better book because its practice drills and tips are brilliant (Joe Blog, etc), even though its tests have the same problem. (Note, however, they are far superior to those of Kaplan and Barrons, which isn't saying much.) Recommendation: buy Princeton Review's Cracking the New SAT 2007, and get a free copy of a genuine SAT when you register for the SAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good preparation - by a math teacher
This is exactly what it says - 11 tests like the SATs with answers and some explanation for each question but no strategy part, and no instruction in the material. If you need a review book or a strategy book, look elswhere.

(the following is only for the math part of the book)

The SAT math section only requires geometry and intro algebra. They are tricky but primarily in unraveling the convoluted wording.

I got this for my son (a bit late I find - some of his class mates started in 7th grade). He is a good student and I was expecting he would zip through the math parts without a problem and we would focus on the verbal part.He started out doing terribly in math sections. There is no math in these questions he hasn't seen so the problem is understanding what the multi-step questions are really asking.Even I get confused by the wording sometimes - so practice, practice, practice because it doesn't matter how good you are at math if you get stumped by the wording.

If these are close to the actual test questions (and I gather they are) there is a lot of work to do to get used to the style of the questions. The explanations for each answer in the book are mostly adequate for self study but I needed to explain a few of them (maybe 1 in 10) so a few questions need some help from a competent adult.

As a HS math teacher I think the real problem in the math problems he got wrong (almost 1/2 of them) is to decipher the convoluted question involved.(If I gave these questions on a test every student would holler "trick question".)Their idea seems to be that you have to solve the problem through multiple steps each of which requires that you understand all the features of, for example, triangles or circles. So even though it is multiple choice you aren't going to be able to easily eliminate two or three answers and make a good guess. They are good questions but they take some getting used to.

I teach this stuff and am fairly good at it, even compared to other teachers, but I took the maximum time to get through most math sections (I got all of them right but you would expect that).

So - I highly recommend this book.Like playing piano or anything else the more you practice the better you'll get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, but.......
This book is fantastic; however, I got confused about the book page number. The description says it has 944 pages, but it just has 924. And I don't like the last PSAT part. I think this book should only contain SAT practice tests only. And it wastes a lot of marginal room. This edition doesn't changed a little, if any. Princeton Review should improve a little when release a new edition, not just change the cover. ... Read more

It's not difficult to raise your SAT verbal score--all ittakes is practice. The Kaplan Verbal Workbook provides 10practice analogy sets, another 10 for sentence completions, and 8practice critical reading sets. With practice, the format becomesfamiliar, and you can gain skill, speed, and confidence by workingyour way through the sample questions. Just practice, however, isn'tenough. The Workbook explains the structure and format for eachsection and provides a number of useful strategies. The practice setsfollow so you can try out the new methods and improve your test-takingabilities.

But there's also content. The Workbook has a wonderful sectionof SAT word lists and SAT root lists. If you expand your vocabulary, learn some roots to help you with the vocabulary you don't know, andintegrate the methods that sharpen your test-taking skills, your scorecan only climb. And Kaplan provides two complete practice SAT verbaltests, with answers and explanations, so you can learn from yourerrors and chart your progress. Using the Verbal Workbook islike working out in a gym--any effort you put in is guaranteed to payoff. The more you study, the easier the practice sets become, thefaster you get, and the higher your score. And, on the day of thetest, your increased confidence will go a long way toward helping youachieve your potential. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Need for Verbal Strugglers
With just a few days left before my March testing date, I purchased this book and did a few sections, most notably the anologys. My score increased by 70 points with just two 20 minute practice sections which put my verbal score over 700.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have a question....
Hi, I am a high school student about to start preparing for the SAT.After reading through the reviews of various SAT books, I found that this one was probably one of (if not) the best.I have already taken the ACT; however, I know that I did terrible on it.So, I have decided to switch to the SAT instead. The thing that I was wondering was about how much time would you say it takes to effectively study this book (ALONG WITH an SAT Math section book)?I'm hoping for 1500+ on my ACT, so I waswondering what the approximate time frame is for two of these books.Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
This book was really valuable to me, and I encourage anyone who needs help on the SAT (don't we all?) to consider it.The practice is broken down into analogies, critical reading, and sentence completion.I'm really good at verbal, but the analogies always killed me.Once I got Kaplan's help and practice, however, my analogy scores shot WAY up.It also helped me with critical reading and sentence completion.I like the way Kaplan breaks it down into 7 or 10 minute drills. It's the best way to learn. The vocab list at the back is also really good.I only memorized about 30 of those words... and just out of that, 5 or 6 showed up on the SAT I took.Crazy!

I can't tell you how wonderful it was to go into the SAT and not feel panicked or stressed.I actually had extra time! The first time, I couldn't even get through the whole SAT.But after using Kaplan, I didn't feel nearly as anxious.I knew the format, understood how to approach the test, and was very familiar with the specific questions. And I'm a good test taker - I already knew all the basics. This book provides specialized strategy, which is incredibly valuable, and makes things easier to understand.

All in all, I went from a 660 to a 760 on verbal.Combined with the math workbook, I raised my SAT score 150 points.I give Kaplan the credit... well, most of it.:)I'm really glad I had these books, and I would reccommend them for basically anyone.

This Kaplan Verbal SAT Workbook really does work.It WILL raise your scores.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall helpful book
After using this book in hopes of being able to tackle the "level 4" and "level 5" questions on the SAT I Verbal section I was not very impressed with the level of difficulty the Kaplan SAT Verbal Workbook provided. Most of the questions in the analogy and sentence completion section are the lower level questions on the SAT I Verbal. It is quite common for the last questions in the SAT I Verbal section to have very difficult vocabulary. However, in the Kaplan's SAT I Verbal Workbook, you will find questions that are labeled by CollegeBoard with a difficulty rating of somewhere around three, sometimes four, and very rarely, five. On the other hand, this book provides a very good set of problems in the Critical Reading Sections. In addition to an accurate model of the actual exam (to some extent), the answer explanations are very clear compared to other prep books. Overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5 because, while it does prepare you well for the SAT I Verbal, if the person using this book was only to use this book, he would discover on the SAT I that the analogies that are level 4 and 5 will be rather difficult for him.

I am aware that there is a vocabulary section in the book, however, a large part of practicing analogies and sentence completion is getting used to using difficult vocabulary words in actual problems

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book to improve your verbal score
This book is a must-need if you are struggling in the verbal section of the SAT*. This book guides you with the the main concepts and steps you need to be able to boost your score up (i went from a 420-590). It has lots of questions to make sure you can apply the methods they give you. By the time you finish this book the verbal section feels so much easier. And yea if you are that type of person slacks off (like me) and can't be bugged to learn all the vocab, IT'S OKAY because the methods in the book are enough to boost your score. The vocab is that little extra push.
THe practice tests at the end of the book mirror the real SAT very well and is good practice for the real SAT*. And all the questions u get wrong are covered by a detailed explanation to why it is wrong and they give you the meanings of the word if itsa sentence completion or analogy question. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read book to score over 700
Among a crowded field of several SAT math preparation books, this one will get you the highest score with the least amount of effort. The tips are explained with enough examples and followed up with easy, medium and hard questions. The answer and explanations at the back are also elaborate. My only wish that there were a few more "hard" questions on each topic for better practice. ... Read more

Product Description
Every year, the number of students taking the SAT rises. And every year, colleges are becoming more competitive. Throw the weakened economy into the mix, and it creates a perfect storm for Up Your Score: a book of invaluable test-taking wisdom, the only book written by "been-there-done-that" kids, the only guide that kids will enjoy using. It’s proven to work—the students who created Up Your Score all nailed the SAT and went on to the colleges of their choice, including this year's 2,400-scoring guest editor.

A guerrilla guide that's a perfect complement (and reality check) for the student who has already tried Princeton Review or Kaplan, Up Your Score injects real-life humor and attitude into the dry business of test prep. Its vocabulary is rich and lively with examples that kids will relate to, and with proven tricks to make definitions memorable. It covers the eight main issues of math, with test-wise, problem-solving techniques. To help students ace the writing section, it addresses the 13 most important grammar rules to know. And it shows how to "psych out" the test: How to think like the SAT. How to prepare the essay in advance. The best ways to fill in answer circles and other strategies to save precious minutes. Plus, tips for maintaining concentration, why it's always better to guess than to leave a question unanswered, and a recipe for energy-boosting Sweet & Tasty 800 Bars (and how to smuggle them into the testing hall).

Amazon.com Review
Tired of those stuffy test-prep books written by people "whowere born before the invention of the number 2 pencil"? Wouldn't youlike a bit of mirth with your math, some vigor in your vocabulary? Then try Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT. Ofthe six authors, three scored perfect 1600s on their SATs (the othersearned respectable 1500+ scores) and two of them were still in highschool when the book was written. As a result, the book is bothhumorous and helpful, and packed with strategies to outsmart theSAT. This guerrilla guide contains key rules to remember for theverbal and math sections (for example, know that questions always getharder in each subsection), a great word list with helpful mnemonicdevices, hints on educated guessing (and a reminder that it can't hurtyou to guess--at worst you'll probably break even on points), and evena section on writing better essays for the SAT II. Best of all is the"But Wait! You Also Get" chapter, which offers advice on improvingyour concentration, relaxation techniques, the moral quandary ofcheating, the fastest way to fill in the answer ovals, and even thesecret of food smuggling (and a recipe for sugar-packed "Sweet andTasty 800 Bars"). Easily the most entertaining of the SAT guides,Up Your Score will certainly help you do just that.Andremember what the authors say--"It's not whether you win or lose, it'show you outsmart the ETS."--C.B. 5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-have" test preparation supplement for anyone whose educational future is dependent on their performance on the SAT
Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT, 2011-2012 edition is an absolutely practical and user-friendly guide to preparing oneself for the SAT test. In addition to traditional study skills recommendations, Up Your Score also focuses on important test-taking tips for optimizing one's natural performance. "You have only about 40 seconds per problem... If you find yourself finishing ten minutes early, then you're probably working too fast and being careless... If you aren't finishing all the questions before time runs out, you might have to be a little less careful... In any case, it's essential that you have practiced enough to know exactly how fast you should be moving." A word list of crucial literary terms, and warnings against some of the most common test-question tricks (such as how nonanswers like "it cannot be determined from the information given" are almost always incorrect when offered for questions near the end of the test, since by that point many students will be rushed, harried, and less likely to be able to figure out the answer by the time limit) round out this savvy and thoroughly accessible guide. A "must-have" test preparation supplement for anyone whose educational future is dependent on their performance on the SAT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, imaginative learning strategies
Written by kids who had perfect SAT scores.Excellent, novel ways to process and remember information.Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's OK, I Guess
I got this book for my son.He read it, and so on, but when he took
the SAT, he got fairly low grades (500s).Then we sent him to the
Princeton Review. Each of his three SAT scores was raised about
100 points (600s).That's the difference between UC and Cal State.

On the other hand, the Princeton Review is _expensive_. . .

2-0 out of 5 stars The book is amusing but not so beneficial
reading the book is amusing and full of fun,but the beenfit is so little

2-0 out of 5 stars Clever Marketing but No Substantial Content
This book was written by clever marketers who want to appeal to younger readers. They are trying to be cute when they should focus on content. I know most SAT books are boring, but they provide the content you need, not cute pictures. I teach SAT verbal and writing (this book was published before writing was added to the test I believe), and the academic material leaves something to be desired.

The BEST books to use are Gruber's and Barron's. Avoid Princeton and Kaplan unless you've completely run out of practice tests in the other two books. Avoid the SAT book that the college board publishes because a friend tells me she can calculate the math problems in her head, and that means they're way to easy.

The problems with the verbal advice of Up Your Score is that the book does not give advice to help with the difficulty of the questions. They also don't emphasize the importance of knowing vocabulary, which if you don't you are up the creek. Another major problem is the vocabulary list. It is way too short. That is why you need Gruber's or Barron's. Both have excellent vocabulary lists. They are really long but they will help your vocabulary substantially.

Also, when you write your essay on the test, use the SAT words you have learned for vocab practice. Apparently readers find this impressive.

Remember Up Your Score is marketing fluff. Get something with substance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
This book is simply amazing. The explanations are very easy to understand and the questions are very relevant and similar to the ones on the real test. Many people I know have used it, including myself, and have helped us tremendously. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tremendously Helpful for My Son's SAT Scores
My son took his first SAT with no prep and scored well below his expectations. He used this book to prepare for his second test. He found it challenging--in a good way. The book helped him to quickly recognize what kinds of questions he needed to improve on, and helped him to get better with each test. He improved his math score from 520 to 690. I'm now using this book to prep my younger daughter for her PSAT. I expect her to improve greatly as well. Based on our experiences, I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Very helpful. Great examples of all the different types of questions that appear on the SATs.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 SAT Math Practice Tests
Very well written. I only wish Paul Simpson would write more testing manuals. A great learning tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stands Out Above the Rest
During my years as a student and now as an assistant tutor, I have pilfered my way through piles and piles of SAT books. I highly recommend this book for many reasons:

-Its language is written to be easily comprehended by the student.
-Current with the SAT standards for test preparation.
-Has material that is detailed and specific
- 5 complex yet informative test are alot easier for a student to achieve greater stride in progress then going through a "encyclopedia" of "how-to's" and "what to look out for"

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!!!!!!!
The Rocket Review Revolution is a wonderful book, which helped me get a great score on the SAT. Parts 1 and 2 - Basic Tutorials and Advanced Tutorials - include very helpful strategies for all three sections of the SAT. In Part 3 (the SAT Writing Test), I learned how to manage my time. This section also includes "100 words that really impress SAT graders," a list of common misspelled words, and specific tips for all parts of the essay. As for the multiple choice part of the Writing test, I learned about the errors most often tested. The critical reading section discusses exactly how to handle both short and long reading passages as well as sentence completions. The book also includes a list of the most commonly used SAT words - I memorized all of these words and received an 800 on the critical reading section. Finally, the math section is also well done - I got an 800! Many problems are interspersed throughout this section, which helped test my understanding. Furthermore, "the Best* Practice SAT Ever Created (*Most Instructive)" is very helpful. I definitely recommend buying the Rocket Review Revolution - your score on the SAT will certainly improve!

I'll tell you why ppl talk about the author himself in the review. You read it, and see for yourself. He provides an entertaining way for students to learn, incorporating jokes, etc.WHy don't you read the book before you make a stupid review

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that I trust very much
I took the SAT's my junior year in High School. When I was looking to find books to help me before this I was semi lost. Everyone is told to buy the big blue book from the company that administers the SAT. I did this, however despite being great for having old tests to practice with there were not any other resources. I was in Barnes and Noble looking for test prep books because I was always anti-tutoring; I felt that it never really went any where you need to know how to take the test, plan your time, and know what to expect. I had never heard of the Rocket Review prior to this time, however I did approach one of the sales reps who claimed that she did know a thing or two about SAT test prep books. She had nothing bad to say about this book, she said that she recommends buying the blue books as did everyone else, but she also said that Robinson was the man who perfected the Joe Blogs tool. I shook my head as if I knew what that meant, and then she showed it to me in the Princeton Review prep book.

I am not here to knock any authors or books, but looking through the Princeton Review guide I did not see much help. I decided to take this book on, as my main source of preparation. The best part about this book, was reading the comments, and the way the book went around choosing a correct answer, and planning my time. I will not say that I would read this book for fun, however as a guide for the SAT, it is the best tool I could have found, and I have recommended this book to everyone I know.

It is hands down, the reason why I was so succesful with the best, it does not claim to give you 300 points for reading the book, and its not a heavy read at all. But using this guide as a resource can only help, and it helps a lot.

So if you are a parent, or a student. Great book, I have nothing but good things to say.

Age 18, University of Southern California.

1-0 out of 5 stars We don't need no self-congratulation

This book is not very useful. It targets an audience that is probably already proficient at writing essays.High school students who need help with the essay need something simpler and more to the point of writing the SAT essay. The title of the book is deceptive. It made me buy the book.

Mr. Fatt Seong Wong recently reviewed this same book claiming it was "no help at all". Seeing as he is a long time member of Amazon (unlike myself) and he has only reviewed one book, perhaps we can conclude that this was the only book he has ever read.If this is the case Mr.Wong, I recommend giving this book another read.

Before picking this book up my SAT scores were admittedly lackluster. However, the authors gave me strategies to tackle one of the more difficult elements of the SAT, as well as authors to emulate. The "rubbish" that the previous reviewer disregards are useful quotations - it would be a great disservice to himself and the authors to not utilize them. As it turns out, the English teachers which grade the SAT essays are impressed by literary references! Who would have thought? This book is by no means the "end all" for the SAT, but if you are running short on time or looking to dramatically improve your essay score, read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars No help at all
I didn't read the reviews about this book and thought a 4 and 1/2 stars is a good enough for me to give it a try. To my surprise, when I finished the book, it didn't give me any strong idea how to write a good essay. Lots of quotes were taken from famous writers, but these are just rubbish, it won't help me to improve my writing and scores. If what other 1 star reviews said is true, they should be ashamed to put the same reviews in all online store to get higher review points.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Advice for Those Who Heed It
For many of my students, the SAT essay is the most difficult part of that formidable test. Wanting to get a different perspective on how to help these students and being interested in reading sample essays and their evaluations, I purchased this book from Amazon sight unseen.

There are many things about this book that I like: the humor, the short chapters, the insightful recommendations, the example essays and the analysis of these essays from different perspectives. I can't say that I learned a great deal from this book, but it did bring important topics to the forefront and proved to be a great refresher course on the SAT essay for me.
Though it's tempting to read but one chapter a day and contentrate on that one lesson, doing so would entail stretching out the reading for almost two months. I found it more beneficial for myself to read two or three chapters a day.

Based on my experiences working with high school students, I think only the most motivated of students will actually read the entire book, stay the course, and benefit from the lessons within. A student also must have a basic understanding of the writing process to incorporate the tips of the authors into his or her own writing program.

For my own purposes I found it best to apply specific principles proferred by the authors to essays previously written by my students. I'd recommend this same strategy to prospective SAT candidates who are studying independently with the help of "3 Minutes a Day."

This is a worthwhile book, one which teachers and serious writing students may find themselves returning to again and again.

I would have liked more examples of relevant topics in the advice chapters, but this would have lengthened the chapters and the book. I guess expecting the perfect book is like expecting a 6 on one's SAT essay. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Choice If You're Not Afraid of Some Frustration
This book was recommended to me by a math major at Yale (just to be clear, I do *not* think she used this book herself...she's probably just looked at it), and it has proven its worth. Although (as some of the other reviewers have pointed out) the book does seem to expect the reader to learn on his/her own, the hundreds of practice problems are more than worth the price. The explanations for the each of the problems are also mostly correct, and they're fairly concise.

For me, personally, this book has really boosted my confidence. Many of the problems here are harder than anything I've seen on an actual SAT (or any practice SAT, for that matter), so once you know how to approach these, the real SAT math is a breeze. That being said, this book can become very frustrating. I have literally thrown the book down and cried on a few occasions.

But it's worth it, especially if you work through the problems and read the explanations carefully. Over the summer, I spent about...thirty or forty hours on the whole book; most students can probably just look over their weakest areas, since the book is conveniently organized by topic.

Anyways, enough with the description and on to the actual numbers: before this book, I usually made around a low 700s score on practice tests. My real score on the math section of the June 2009 SAT was a 700. I've yet to re-take the SAT, but so far, my scores on practice tests (I've been using the Princeton Review practice test book, as well as the CB official one) have consistently been in the high 700's to 800 zone. Since I haven't really looked at any prep book since this one, I'm sure the majority of this point increase is thanks to Math SAT 800.

1-0 out of 5 stars Math Teacher Says NO
This book is meant to help one perfect their skills for the SAT math test. The problem is, the book is full of mistakes! Some of the solutions are just wrong, and for some questions, the correct answer does not even appear as one of the answer choices!Unfortunately, it is not a matter of spelling mistakes or typos, but some solution methods and definitions provided are simply incorrect.Students using this book may end up learning an incorrect method as a result. It is a complete waste of time trying to sort it all out when there are plenty of well-reviewed SAT books to choose from.I am a math teacher with a degree from the Mathematics Department of Princeton University, and would NOT recommend this book as a study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good math problems to practice for the SAT
MAT SAT 800 has a lot of medium and difficult math problems to help study for the SAT, so you can skip over all the easy stuff and work on the problems you're getting wrong. They go through the answers for each problem so you can check everything that you don't get right, and there are some good tips for doing the different kinds of problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of useful practice problems
good book if you're looking for "medium" and "hard" type problems to practice for the SAT, which make the difference between getting a 600-700 and getting an 800. You don't have to waste time solving the easy problems that you already know how to do, or leafing through the official practice sats to find good practice problems.

the book is divided into 11 sections, so you can focus on the type of problems you want (e.g. word problems or geometry). also, there are two practice exams with a mix of all different kinds of problems. And you can look up the answers and detailed explanations to every problem at the back of each section/exam.

this book is also good for the math sat 2 subject tests in math (IC and IIC)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best SAT math prep book for those who aim at 700 or highter
As a math tutor, I have had students whose SAT math target scores range from 600 to 800. A friend recommended this book to me about 3 weeks ago and I decided to do an experiment right away.

First I used the diagnostic test at the very beginning of this book to test my students and divided them into several groups, then chose different combinations of math topics from this book for those different groups. The examples and detailed explanations under each topic are very well written and organized. The students who were already at the 650-level responded really well--most of them are at the 700-level right now after just 2 weeks of reading and practicing. Several students who started at about 550 also pressed me again and again for harder problems from this book.

Everybody wants a little bit challenge from time to time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and instructional at the same time
Probably the primary reason that something is easy to learn is because it's interesting. Spelling and vocabulary building are usually not among those that arouse interest; however, this book makes these topics interesting for the student by creating amusing word-use sentences that involve teen-think. My daughter really likes using it for her weekly (homeschooled) vocabulary lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Dictionary
The best way to learn vocabulary is through reading. There comes a point
in studying for the SAT; wherein, a volume like this one would be helpful.
This text has typical words and their usage set forth in an easy-to-read
format. It's important to have comprehensive definitions and sentences
because memorizing vocabulary for the SAT exam would be pointless.
Sample words are:
o abrasive
o accentuate
o alacrity
o ascetic
o benign
o cacophony
o cadence etc.

This dictionary would be invaluable in order to assist in mastering
the diction requisite for success on this exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny
some characters ar e weird but I liked reading about them. read the whole book. now i'm going back to learn the SAT words.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Score Booster!
SAT Dictionary.

This is the easiest and most efficient way to learn vocabulary words on the New SAT. Its way better to learn the vocabulary words than those enormous phonebook-sized SAT preps. I carried the Dictionary in my pocket almost all the time. When ever I had my spare moments, I flipped a page and Bam! (I'm learning new words.) Flashcards do not have the time-saving ability that this versatile SAT Dictionary offers. Furthermore, the characters depicted in the book are very intriguing. My favorite characters are Josh and Timmy. The sentences involving them made me laugh a few times and helped me retain words through laughter. Paul is pretty cool too. You'll meet them once you buy the book :).

In addition, I took the January 28th SAT test. In the 19 sentence completions of the test, I saw many vocabulary words that were on the Dictionary.
For example: prosaic, ambivalence, tenacious, voracious, facile, and vociferous to name a few. The rest of the vocabulary words which I saw were also on the Dictionary but I could not retain their full meaning because I (procrastinated) and failed to remember a high percentage of words.

Don't procrastinate! If you have at least 3 months until the test. As an experienced SAT taker, my word of advice is: study NOW. Sacrifice video games,TV,Chess,Runescape and all your time-consuming activities for the SAT.Because those months will go flying, time will go so fast that you won't even realize that have you a few weeks left.

Also remember: if you have achieved to learn all or at least a high percentage of these 1,000 most frequently tested SAT words. Give yourself 200+ on the Critical Reading Section. The 19 sentence completions are about 200-260 points.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical SAT prep book
I like this dictionary. Some of the sentences are actually funny and reading about the freaks at Anytown makes studying for the SAT almost bearable. Much better than boring flash cards.

1-0 out of 5 stars Take almost a month on delivery!
I purchased this book on 09/28. It was sentd out on 10/14 and I got it on 10/22; it took almost a month to deliver the book. This shipment was the longest of all my online orders.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book for quick review
I am currently in Pre-Calculus and am taking the math I and II subject test right after my end of the year final exams. I would consider myself above average when it comes to math, and therefore this book was perfect for me. If you are currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus and are planning to take the math subject test and are somewhat good at math then I highly recommend this book. It goes over all the concepts, not in great amounts of picky detail, but it is a great tool that will start jogging your memory back. For me, it reviewed all the concepts that I have learned so far and told me exactly what I needed to know.
If you are someone who is looking for a little more rigorous review for the subject tests and need to learn more of these concepts in detail then I would recommend that you go with McGraw Hill's or Barron's Math I or Math II Subject test books.
Overall, it has about 300 pgs. of actual review, 2 practice tests for each math I and math II and if you know all the concepts but are just a little rusty on your memory, this brings everything right back.
Hope this helps.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does a great job
Great math review book. Remember, it's REVIEW. The book expects you to have seen all these material in class before, but it's teaching it in a way and only little bits of parts of it: ALL you need to get a 700+ on the Math 2C/Math 1C SAT II tests. It's not saturated IN-DEPTH, so you probably WON'T get a 800 (85 percentile) with this book ALONE. Expect a 700+ if you review the whole book and the practice tests at the end. I got 710 and reviewed the book every day for 2 weeks, and took the practice tests, on SAT math 2. Make sure you buy Barron's if you want a perfect score , because it covers the material more in-depth; this is just a review!

2-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
This book is worthless for the Math Level 2. Doesn't cover everything in detail, doesn't explain most of the stuff - and the level is too easy.

I mean, why would anyone pay $20 for this? If you want a GOOD score on the IIC, get something like Barron's or the "15 Realistic Tests" one. I admit they're way more difficult than the actual test standard, but you'll need it if you want to get anything above 750 - which isn't that much in the Level 2, as more than 10% of the test takers get a perfect score of 800.

If you just want to see how much you get on a realistic SAT test, get the official SAT Subject Test Study Guide or the official SAT Math Study Guide, the CollegeBoard ones.

2-0 out of 5 stars A LOT of errors
I found a lot of errors in this book which led me to find out the true answers myself.Like in one drill question, you were suppose to use the volume of a cylinder, 1/3(Pie)(radius sq.'ed)(height).However, the explantion in the book to the answer forgot to use the (1/3)..
Also, the drill answer pages don't correspond to the correct listed answer page..Which makes it hard to find the answers for the drills.

I'm not a specialist in Math subject tests but the book really helped me. I consider it complete and inteligible.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to get an 800
This is the best SAT II math 2 prep book out there. Although the problems were a bit challenging and some trivial than of the actual test, this book is perfect. It provides lucid explainations and it is very thorough. Also, don't be too discouraged when you don't do too well on the practice tests. For me, I scored around 670 on my first practice test and my highest score in this book was 720. On the day of the test, I was able to finish the test with around 10 minutes left over. I only missed one problem and omittied a question, nevertheless I still scored an 800. This book with unequivocally is the best there is for SAT II Math level 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics pre-calculus, Sat 2 subject test
This book done thoroughly is the key to an 800.Every child who completes it has gotten a perfect score. It's also a great review for the pre-calculus final.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard but worth it
I used the book to prepare for the Math SAT II after being told that it was way harder than the actual test. It was! The highest score I got in the book was a 690 (Itook four of the seven practice tests), but on the actual test I got an 800. I can't not recommend the book after getting that score, but I'm pretty advanced in math and for anyone who has more difficulty, the book would have been very frustrating because it covers more complex material that may not be on the actual test. A great review for anyone determined to get the top score. ... Read more

Written for the 1.8 million students who will take the SAT this year, this relatable study guide fuses the irreverent humor of The Onion with all the preparation prowess of The Official SAT Study Guide.

Every year, almost 2 million students take the SAT exam, a test that will likely determine their college admissions, scholarship offers, and ultimately, what kind of cars they'll drive and how much money they'll make.

To ensure that your child doesn't end up in a rusted-out Gremlin making less than $5.00 an hour, professional comedy writer and savant Charles Horn taps his talents to present an instructive test-taking tool that is as entertaining as it is educational.

Using the same types of questions that appear on the actual exam, Horn rewrites his guide to make the questions timely, edgy, and fun. Instead of boring, politically correct textbook material, students will be engaged by questions covering stuff they actually might care about, like teen issues, Hollywood, and pop culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars LOL
This book is a great way to bring comedy into the prep for the SAT. Funny sentences and stories make me want to keep doing all the problems and motivates me to continue my study

5-0 out of 5 stars If only I could take the SAT again!
I wish I had this book back when I took the SATs. Not only is it a great read and hilarious, but it actually provides a real tutorial for the test. The only difference is that you can read this guide without falling asleep, unlike every other tutorial out there.

I thankfully don't plan to take another standardized test for the rest of my life (I burned all my No.2 pencils in celebration), but this book should be mandatory reading for everyone in high school, or anyone else who just likes to laugh.

I keep my copy on my coffee table, and everyone that comes over loves to read through it. My friends and I actually read the questions out loud to see if anyone knows the answer. I'm sure you could build a board game around it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Offensive!!!!
I am a teacher and bought this to help students prepare for SAT based on many positive reviews. Some of the tips are good, howver, the practice materials are highly offensive and some examples reference instances and activities that are illeagal for high school students (i.e. hoping the kids don't get hit on by the priest at church, ganja colored coin for Bob Marley, after a night of drinking girl ends up with tatoo).I cannot ethically lend or use this to help my students.I'm sending it back immediately. It's too bad, becuase humor is a powerful tool when used correctly, not to slam or make fun of cultural/ethnic/racial differences.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only one problem
I found this SAT guide to be engaging and correct, for the most part.Question #12 of the math section on page 79 is incorrect. The correct answer should be 53.3%

5-0 out of 5 stars Roll on the floor laughing. . . I didn't know it was possible from an SAT guide
I found this while looking for an SAT guide for my nephew, but couldn't put it down myself. And then I showed a friend, and he wouldn't give it back as he flipped through it.At one question, he laughed for a full minute!

The author goes through all the different types of SAT questions, teaching the real information about the questions but with hilarious examples of each of the question types. Some of them sound like late night comedy jokes, which I guess makes sense since the author wrote for Leno.Math questions are also very funny.I didn't know this was even possible!

This book is a really fun way to review the types of questions and take a practice test before going on to taking all the practice SAT tests you can get your hands on.When I was taking the SAT, I read a review book and then took 6-10 practice tests and got 2340 out of 2400.As someone who (thankfully!) doesn't have to take the SAT anymore, I found this book really funny and think it could actually help motivate someone to get started with studying for the SAT.Prior to taking a zillion practice tests. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate and extremely helpful!
I used this book before taking the SATs and it helped my critical reading score improve 20-30 points (from vocab) compared to my PSATs.

It was extremely accurate, and many of the words that were in it were on the actual test. The pictures and stories really made the definitions memorable, and even made learning some of the vocab fun.

I highly recommend this book to juniors looking for a fast and easy way to memorize vocabulary words!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite up to snuff
I purchased this book for a student, but was disapointed to find that many of the words in it were well below what I consider to be standard in the SAT.My opinion is immaterial, but my student, too, was disappointed. Of course there were many vocabulary words he wasn't as familiar with, but at least one-third of the book was too elementary. If I had been given the opportunity to look inside this book before I purchased it, I wouldn't have, at least not for this particular student.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleased with purchase
I like the pictures. They help my 8-year old to remember well. I would recommend this item to young and old.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay.
This book is okay.It does contain some flaws.I think it would help me remember the words better if it had some visual aid.I recommend using SAT Vocabulary Cartoons better. Some of the ideas could have been made up easily by myself. It tends to get a bit wordy sometimes.Otherwise, this book could be a little bit useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable vocabulary builder
As a high school teacher, I return to this book year after year for my AP English Language and Composition class and Honors English 11 classes. It familiarizes students with words they read in literature as well as offers definitions they will encounter on college entrance exams. The tips for remembering meaning are entertaining and effective. My students always enjoy the book. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Sentence completion is OK, but reading is absolutely disastrous
Like every other high school student, Barron's is a challenging yet incredibly accurate and helpful for me. So it was only natural for me to buy this book for the SAT. This book divided sentence completion and reading comprehension into various groups for its difficulty. I found that the sentence completion questions are decent (not perfect, for no prep book can be exactly like the actual test). It was rather disappointing to see some questions were vague. For instance, it tested idioms which is not commonly seen in the actual test (in fact, I dont think it's seen at all). But the real disaster was the reading comprehension questions. The questions are not like the actual questions at all, and they are very subjective and ambiguous. If you get a few questions wrong using this book, dont worry. I got 3-4 questions wrong per passage in this book but got a 780 in CR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I bought this for my kids but browsing through it, I learned a LOT too! It's an excellent resource for SAT takers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Workbook for Highly Motivated Students
Pros: Hundreds of practice questions; Multiple ability levels; Answer key with explanations; Great vocabulary words
Cons: Brief descriptions of problem-solving strategies; C level questions more challenging than official SAT questions; Flashcards for vocabulary; Short answer explanations

I recommended using The Barron's Critical Reading Workbook for the SATwith other SAT prep materials. The workbook as a stand alone critical reading SAT prep is not enough for the majority of high school juniors and seniors preparing for their first SAT exam. Barron's provides an ample number of practice questions for students of all ability levels, however, Barron's Critical Reading Workbook does not provide sufficient vocabulary exercises or overall SAT test taking strategies.

Sophomores who are looking to gain an edge by beginning their SAT test prep early and are simply looking for a way to become familiar with the types and styles of questions they will face on the SAT may find this workbook sufficient preparation for the verbal section.

While the vocabulary in this workbook is excellent, the presentation of the vocabulary is less than stellar. Many students do not enjoy the burden of flashcards and some students may discover that they have learning styles that are incompatible with rote memorization. A separate vocabulary book such as Vocabulary Cartoons: SAT Word Power or The Critical Thinking Company's Word Roots: Level A; Book 2: Learning the Building Blocks of Better Spelling and Vocabulary series is recommended to use with this Barron's Critical Reading Workbook to provide alternative and enriching vocabulary activities.

If used in conjunction with better vocabulary exercises Barron's Critical Reading Workbook is appropriate for independent, individual use by high achieving, highly motivated high school seniors preparing to take the SAT reasoning test. With a high level of motivation students will be able to easily follow the guidelines provided at the beginning of the workbook and proceed through the book independently; without this motivation students may need the help of a parent, teacher, tutor or coach to guide them through the book and assign specific sections and pages to complete.

Students of all levels may find it helpful to have a tutor, teacher or mentor guide them through the Barron's workbook to provide problem-solving strategies, test-taking skills, enrichment activities and encouragement that the book by itself does not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Workbook, USE FOR SCORE INCREASE
So, a friend of mine recommended this workbook to me. He said that it helped him increase by 70 pts from a 670 to a 740. I bought it, did most of the sentence completions, studied the vocab., and did the passages. I went from a 670 on the critical reading (March sat 09') to a 750! (Dec sat 09'). I have to say that I am thoroughly impresseed with this book. It arranges the sentence completions in three sets according to difficulty and the passage based reading questions are harder than the real sat which definitely prepared me. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disapointing
I used Baron's for the SAT Math Subject Test and it was great. However, for the reading Baron's was terrible. My main issue with this book is that the questions in the practice tests ARE NOT similar to the questions you will actually see on the test. Most books especially Collegeboard's have acurate questions. However, this book had styles of reading comprehension questions that I had not seen in a dozen practice tests. Baron's had a lot of "pretty general" questions that would ask about details from a group of paragraphs.I had never seen this sort of question.Baron's asks a lot of these.Other practice tests that I have seen had a lot of questions asking about main ideas, tone of the passage, comparing passages, and specific detail questions (citing specific lines).Baron's had a few of these questions types, but definitelynot as many as on other tests. My point is that Baron's may make you a better critical reader through these exercises, BUT it will not prepare you well for the types of questions you will see on the SAT reading test. There were also a lot of typos in the book.Lastly, the sentence completion questions were alright and the vocabulary lists were good. However, this does not make up for the inadequate reading passage questions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, humorous and very helpful.
I first heard about this book from my oldest daughter when she was in high school. It helped her to increase her SAT scores and qualify for a some additional financial aid.Since then I have convinced each of my other children, five children in all, to read this book with and eye on increasing their scores. Each have been able to show an improvement after reading the various editions.

With the importance of standardized test results in the college admissions process and financial aid awards, being able to pay such a small price to get any degree of improvement is a welcome addition to any SAT preparation plan. For my kids it was a nice addition to the higher cost programs that we used and I think the results for the dollars spent were substantially greater.

Another book that was helpful for high school students is from the College Board - CLEP Official Study Guide 2010. This book addresses the topic of getting college credit for introductory classes by taking exams at a very reasonable costs versus attending college classes. Similar to the advanced placement (AP) program in high schools.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to help prepare you for the SAT
I remember reading an older version of this book a few years ago in preparation for the SAT, and it helped a lot. The book was written in a way that eases your fears and gives you lots of helpful tips/tricks to use on the test - without boring you to death. Bottom line, I was able to go into my test confidently and with ease after reading the book. I scored a 2000 by primarily using this book. While I would recommend this book, I would also suggest buying a book of practice questions so you can put the strategies in "Up Your Score" to good use. So I think you can spend less than $50 for two books and still do really well on the SAT - you don't need to spend a ton on prep courses if you put what's in this book to good use.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING HELP!
absolutely amazing! its fun, and easy to read which is sooo helpful! a must buy for SAT prep

1-0 out of 5 stars Written by kids - and it shows.
I've been teaching the SAT for one of the major international companies for 6 years, and also have my private tutoring business. I already had quite a lot of SAT books of various quality and decided to try this one.

Sadly I discovered it to be pretty much a waste of money. The advice given is often silly obvious tips written in a supposedly humorous style that became very wearing after the first few pages. The sample questions provided are of the too-simple 'not likely to see this in the real SAT' type or not representative.

There are a lot better books than this one out there. Start with the official guide and use it for all practice questions. If you need more tuition then try Kaplan for a general course or for math, I like the McGraw-Hill textbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely superseded by the 2011 edition
Hello. I purchased this item for my college-bound younger brother and was disappointed to see that the 2011 version was only a slight revision to this one's contents. That means that nobody should buy both editions. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
I bought this for my son. He likes it and found it very helpful. Lot of questions for the bucks. Even at my age I have had some fun to do the gramma and algebra parts, as well as in discussion with my child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for anyone taking the SAT test
My 13-year old daughter had to take the SAT test in order to apply for the Math and Science Center at our high school. Although she did not know how to answer some of the questions (just because she has not been taught the information yet) having this book allowed her to practice taking the tests and see how the questions are set up for each area of study. We were also able to have her take the tests given the time she would have been allowed during the actual test. We were very happy with our purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but flawed.
I got this book after my mom kept pushing me to study for SATs (I'm currently a junior and I took the test in December).Even though it was a drag to churn out a test every week, I think it helped me on the actual test, as well as the PSAT

I didn't really use the additional PSAT practice test, but my projected SAT score from the results was 2310, and it turned out to be pretty close. The most useful part for me was actually when they reviewed the few types of grammar rules.I went over this briefly and everything was on the actual test (I aced the grammar portion of it). There's not too much review because it IS a book of practice tests, so I assume this book is not for everyone or is to be used in conjunction with their Cracking the SAT series.I for one didn't really want to take a prep class so I chose this instead.

The typos mentioned by other people were pretty obvious, and sometimes very frustrating.I'm pretty sure that most people can figure out that the slope of a line is found by using delta y over delta x, not some weird mix of the two (Practice test 4, Section 3, #19.)

I'm not sure how other prep books are (I didn't really have much time and I've only taken the test once), but this one is good for checking timing, and the problems are about the right difficulty.Basically, use this book to prepare, but be ready to face typos and some vague questions. If you can deal with that, this should be a pretty good choice for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buyers also get free access to The Princeton Review's online test center
