3-0 out of 5 stars Only an extra...
This book has answers that are arguably accurate. Concepts such as belle indifference are not covered in Kaplan's review. Insofar as the diagnostic test: Mental disorders that are short in duration are episodic, not acute (which means severe). There was another but I can't remember it. I believe another reviewer simply read the Beta Error question incorrectly.

All in all, this is a good book to support catholic knowledge of psychology and psychological history, but should be viewed as an accompanying component, not a primary tool. On the diagnostic you will assuredly miss many questions. Live and learn. I skipped the practice tests as I ran out of time when combined with my other study, and the the ACRO questions do not accurately match the question composition style of ETS. They are good practice, but they're a little off from the real deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, if used with other resources
This book has a ridiculously long diagnostic test, almost 390 questions, but it does really help you to narrow your focus to study your weakest areas. I think the section on research methods is more thorough than Princeton Review, and that using these two books together to study would be a good idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best, but there are more
Man... I have to rewrite this review cause I think that I wrote stuff on my last review that went against the Amazon.com guidelines. That was a REAL LONG review as well. Shoot.

Anyway, this is the best for GRE Psych. Why? Because...
1) Unlike others, this review book is DETAILED (unlike Princeton Review's).
2) The detailed info that it contains is also RELEVANT INFO (unlike Barron's, which u should stay as far away from as u can).
3) Although not so reflective of the real tests, it contains A LOT of practice tests... I think 5 of them (including diagnostic). This is a big plus, cause taking practice tests is one of the best ways to actively review (ppl usu. don't daydream while taking tests, but do when studying, thus missing out a lot of info).
4) The tests' answers are explained
5) It highlights the important terms (although it highlights too many unimportant names as well)

And there's probably more, but this should be enough.

All in all, buy this book, review with it, and if you have time, buy Princeton Review and REA's, but only after thoroughly going over this one, which means redoing your wrong answers until u get them correct.

Oh, and by the way, u all should know, but... GET AS MANY REAL OFFICIAL ETS GRE TESTS YOU CAN

This book (about a month's worth of studying...INTENSE studying) earned me a 95 percentile on the GRE Psychology, and I didn't take a single Psychology class.

5-0 out of 5 stars No comparison
There's no comparison next to other books. This book is THE BEST test prep for psych. It covers more of the field and is more up-to-date.I was a little hesitant because I had read some of the reviews here on this website. But I found the other reviews mostly unrealistic. So what if the test questions don't cover exactly the same material as the review chapters!Psych is a big field and no one book can cover the entire subject.Of course the test questions covered new stuff. They're supposed to!I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
My undergraduate classes did not prepare me at all for studying for the Psych GRE.So I memorized this book and referred to the Princeton Review Book (Meg Jay) and scored a 770.The book provides detailed information on every topic (though the clinical section is a little Freudian...) and makes even difficult topics easy to understand. The actual test was very different from all the practice tests I took (this book, Princeton Review and REA) but I felt like I was able to make educated inferences based on what I'd learnt here.Definitely a good buy! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Math Section
The back of the book is great - especially the math part.It gets straight to the point and tells you EXACTLY what you'll find on the exam.

However the verbal and written parts are not as well covered.I do like their idea (maybe other books use this too?) of grouping the vocabulary words so that you know a more general definition for a lot of words rather than an exact for a few, if you are in a hurry it's a good way to study vocab.

4-0 out of 5 stars Came as ordered
I got this study guide back in 2006 because I thought I was going to take the GRE.In fact i'm scheduled to take the PCAT, though I can't knock the text here. Was fairly substantial and if I had to take it, this would have prepared me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the GRE!
This book gave me a great strategy for the GRE and broke down the questions so I could quickly narrow down the choices. I also used the vocabulary flip book. I got a great score and only studied for 3-4 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Verbal and Math Review
This book proved to be very useful to me when studying for the GRE. The vocabulary words, word groups, and word roots were extremely helpful. The Reading Comp tips were in-depth. The math review and tricks were also very useful, but I do recommend downloading the free Math Review packet on the GRE website, where all concepts are reviewed in a logical format with practice questions to be used alongside the math portion of the Kaplan book. In addition, the writing section format was very useful...the essays graded 6 and 5 in the book were useful to look at when getting an idea for the format for the essays. I ended up with a 5.5 on the writing section because of it, and a 1210 combined score on the verbal and math sections with only one week of studying. Highly recommend!!

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT INDICATIVE OF ACTUAL GRADE!
Practice test one:
Score: Verbal: 506 Quantitative: 420
Practice test two:
Score: Verbal: 600 Quantitative: 480
Practice test three (3 hours before taking GRE):
Score: Verbal: 520 Quantitative: 500

(This had me an emotional wreck the day of the GRE)

MY ACTUAL First time GRE SCORES:
Verbal: 720Quantitative: 620

My only belief is that this book and program is designed to convince you to buy the courses. That being said, the 30 minute math tests did make me feel like I had all day to do the quant on the GRE.

I'm not sure this helped me very much. I think I would've been better off just with a math review book.

AND it is full of typos at critical points. For example, in one QC test problem it says "Circle 1 intersects Circle 2 and EXACTLY two points" and the problem requires it to be intersected at exactly one point to be solved. ... Read more

Product Description

While the classically inspired “Grecian” gown designed by Madame Alix Grès is widely recognized and admired, little else of the brilliant couturier’s life or work has received close attention. This book, by far the most detailed study yet published on this influential fashion designer, carefully analyzes Madame Grès’ innovative construction techniques and connects her designs to the art styles and movements that inspired and informed her aesthetic.

Gorgeously illustrated with images of fabulous clothes designed by Madame Grès, the book focuses on her long career (spanning the early 1930s to the late 1980s) and refutes the previous understanding that her work was static and unchanging. Rather, her designs consistently changed and evolved, even as a thread of continuity connected them. The volume discusses how sculpture and the construction of non-western clothing inspired Grès’s fashion, and examines numerous couture versions of her saris, ponchos, serapes, caftans, three-dimensional sculptural pieces, and Grecian gowns. In addition, the book constructs a timeline of her career and discusses her secretive private life, including the circumstances of her death, inexplicably concealed by her daughter for over a year.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bookschlepper Recommends
Years ago someone gave me a sample of Cabochard perfume and I fell in love. Its designer was Madame (Alix) Grès, born Germaine Emilie Krebs in Paris in 1903. Just as she was to construct flowing Grecian gowns for high society and transform the use of fabric for the twentieth century, she was to construct and transform her own name, history and legend. Not much is known about the actual woman. The coutouriere let her soft, sculptured dresses speak for her; the elegance of her jersey creations was sought after by women of refinement. Then, fallen from the heights of the fashion world, done in by changing tastes and a sad attempt at prêt-a-porter, she became a turbaned recluse whose death was not announced for over a year. Her perfume company was sold; it is all that remains in active commerce but her myth and her frocks (usually held by private collectors although I have occasionally seen one on e-Bay) remind us of an original mind. Yale UP and the Fashion Institute of Technology, joint publishers, have issued a lovely large-format volume with photographs of both Madame and her clothes. Mears comes as close to the truth as we are likely to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning!
Stunning!Well-written story of Madame Alix Gres in four chapters:1 life and career, 2 the grecian gown, 3 ethnic influences, 4 sculpting with fabric.Full page (> 12" x 8") photographs of selected works over her entire range of career; the photographs are high-definition.Some fashions have multiple photographs from different angles.Photographs are full page, so they are often not on the page where the text is that describes the fashion, and there is occassional lack of reference to the accompanying photograph(s) (inconsistent use of stating which plate the text is referring to).I wish every fashion and every advertisement described in the text had a photograph.

5-0 out of 5 stars For fashion affecionados
I read about the Madame Gres exhibit at the NY Fashion Institute of Technology in the New York Times recently.Upon finishing the lengthy article I raced over to my laptop and was excited to order this book. For those who love, crave and have to surround yourself with beautiful visual images this is the book for you. To look at the actual photographs of her original pieces along with her photographs made me feel privileged to read about this amazing woman. The thousands of folds, tucks and pleats in her garments were obviously a lifelong labor of love!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book about a Wonderful Talent
I only knew a little of Madame Gres and this book brought to my attention that she was one of the major designers of our era--someone who "invented" the use of draping and fabrics, unlike they had ever been used before. Not just a product of its time, Madame Gres' fashions are timeless and have influenced everything since her time.I would highly recommend this book not just for the fashion, but for the very interesting text by the author, as well, who really puts the work in context. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good review
I just started studying and this is great. I usually remember like 30 words a night. I recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
The book was very helpful in spelling out strategies for the verbal GRE.The vocabulary lists in the back of the book were super as well.I wished there were more sample questions and problems though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provided peace of mind in days before taking test
The Kaplan 800 verbal book is far better than the math version of the same series and has some great tips on what to do if you don't know the vocabulary word given. They tell you how, for the antonym questions, to narrow down the answer choices so that you can possibly choose the correct answer without even reading the given vocabulary word.I don't know that I used any of the tips they gave but reading these and knowing that I could possibly answer questions even if I didn't know the vocabulary word did calm me down in the days before I took the test and I scored in the 95th percentile for verbal.

In general, I would recommend studying Barron's test prep material if you are starting well ahead of time (actually their essay writing advice is very useful even if you don't have much time), to study this book from Kaplan if you have just a few weeks or so, and to study Princeton Review if it's the week of. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful review & practice tests
Hi!

The review section is excellent, and the explanation of the test format was exactly what I needed.I not only worked on the CD-ROM (which by the way, the GRE is computer-based anyway), but on the paper-based exams. Both helped.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for GRE preparation
I studied for 2 months for the GRE's and tried out lots of books. This one was the best. (I used the 15th edition which is bit more recent). The math review was the most comprehensive I found, and I needed a great deal of math review because I've been out of school 15 years and haven't taken a math course in 19 years. The vocabulary lists were terrific too. Unlike some other reviewers, I found the practice questions to be about the same, and in some cases a bit easier, than the actual test. But I scored higher than I'd expected to on both the math and verbal sections, largely due to this book. My one complaint was there there is no index listing where to find help with specific math concepts so I had to do a lot of flipping around to find particular sections. I'd say: leave yourself plenty of time to study, try several books out to get different tactics (such as Cracking the GRE, the GRE for Dummies, the Kaplan's GRE Prep) but use this book extensively and definitely, definitely, definitely work with the GRE Powerprep software offered by the ETS, the people who make up the real GRE. I'd recommend downloading it from the web site because, although you're supposed to receive it in the mail once you register for the GRE's, it may not arrive in time.Best of luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars Errors run rampant but helpful
The vocab review is very helpful and will greatly increase your vocabulary score. Though, I agree with the reader about the numerous errors in this book. There are many flat out errors and many printing errors. Keep an eye out when doing the practice math problems because there are quite a few errors. The math review is helpful. I would recommend this book because it is so cheap (used) and it offers a nice review of math and vocab.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This and the ETS software were all that I used. The book is great, with really helpful explanations. On my first practice test I got in the low 600s in all 3 sections, and on the real test I got 800Q, 770A, and 630V. Since in my field the Q is by far the most important, I was quite happy with the results :)

3-0 out of 5 stars Has the Info, but Needs Better Presentation
This Barron's guide to the GRE probably has equivalent information and study tips to the other GRE guides that are available, making it an acceptable guide. This especially applies to the Verbal Ability section and the diagnostic and model tests. The 3500-word dictionary of brainiac words is also useful but takes forever to get through if you tackle it from a study angle. The biggest problem with this guide is the Quantitative (math) Ability section, in which complex solutions are difficult to read and sometimes contain errors and typos. Take this example: "x+.25x=1.25x=2000=>y=2000/.75=2666.67." Now imagine that crammed into the middle of a paragraph containing various fonts and typefaces - and this example doesn't even contain square roots, exponents, fractions, or other hard to read symbols. Add to that some flat-out errors (see some of the other reviews here for examples) and the Quantitative section presents some difficulties. The Analytical Ability section falters in some places as it tries to explain how you should "infer" or "deduce" answers. I found myself just plain disagreeing with some of the answers in the Analytical section, with no explanation as to why I should agree with the guide's answer. One final humbug in this edition is the 2-page synopsis on the new Analytical Writing portion of the test, which is hidden at the end of the book after about 140 pages of model test information.

This guide will surely help you practice adequately for the GRE, but the presentation leaves a little to be desired. Also, you can buy this book with the optional CD-ROM, which gives tips on the current computer-based version of the test. If you have at least competent computer skills, the CD-ROM is unnecessary, so skip it and save some money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study aid
I used this book along with the Kaplan version to study for my GRE.I had to retake my GRE for my PhD application and it had been about 4-5 years from my last one. While there were a few typos (which were not a big deal at all; I have seen similar typos in course books written by PhDs) this book was written in a way that was easily understandable. What benifitted me the most was the english sections since my verbal was what I needed to improve.I highly recommend anyone getting this to help with their GRE.HIGHLY recommend!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars if ur taking the GRE math subject test, only 3 books are available, and this should be the second buy!
if ur preparing for GRE math subject test, First book (a must)to buy is Cracking the GRE Math Subject TEST.

now, this one like other reviewers said include an introduction section (total of 63 questions, good, but with no detailed solutions), and two actual tests, one of them u can download online!

yes, this is upsetting, so in total, you can count as if this book has two tests (the introduction, and the actual test not downloadable online).

5-0 out of 5 stars Beter would be REA's!
If you are serious about the math subject test, REA has the best! The problems are slightly harder than the official tests but are definitely helpful! This book contains real tests one of which can be found on ETS for free. So basically you are buying one test out of the tens of official tests. Wouldn't recommend!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good except....
I liked very much that they have included two actual full-length GRE Math tests. However I was very disappointed to see that one of its two tests, could be downloaded freely as a PDF file from the ETS website, so I felt that I paid double for just one useful test.

One very good thing though, is that it includes the statistics of how many people got right and wrong each question, so you can more or less compare yourself to the rest of the population.

Another very important thing is that, since late 2001, the GRE Math test has been rescaled, that is, you should not compare past scores with current scores, and this book is still using obsolete scores. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Numerous errors and uneven subject treatment.
Based on past experience with Pearson products, I had high hopes for this book.I mistakenly assumed given the higher price that it would be a notch above some of the other GRE prep materials available.Unfortunately, this was a poor assumption on my part.

The book contains several glaring errors in the the quantitative review.Sure mistakes happen, but so does proof-reading.In addition to typos, there are other indications to suggest that the book was hurriedly written. For example, in the chapter on GRE verbal, the same paragraph explaining congnates and roots is copied verbatim about 15 (short) pages later. It's frustrating to think that the author didn't take advantage of the opportunity to introduce a new root.(Or for that matter, at least amend the paragraph.)There are several other paragraphs regarding test-taking strategies that were copied in this section and then had a couple words at the end changed.

Finally, the quantitative review leaves a fair bit to be desired. The examples are all simple and straightforward, and the background material is sparse.

The book gets 2 stars. One for the good introductory material on how to approach the test psychologically, and a second one because it does contain useful practice tests, all of which have explanations.

If you're preparing for the GRE, your money is better spent on the Barron's book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Met expectations
I have found this workbook really helpful.Explanations followed by examples and practice questions. All questions have full detailed answers explaining why a particular choice is correct and/or why the others are incorrect.

5-0 out of 5 stars good
book came in a timely fashion. would purchase another book from user in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but best used in conjunction with another book
I bought this book and used it along with the Princeton Review's GRE book. This book's high points would have to be it's math review section and the strategies offered for each question type in the math, writing, and verbal sections. The math review was by no means in depth, but it was a very good starting point because it listed pretty much every possible math topic that could come up on the GRE which allowed me to go online and get math practice worksheets for each area. The writing section was excellent in this book: it went so far as to even help you brush up on writing (but not grammar) skills, gave examples of essays that received the highest scores, and gave strategies for answering the essay questions. It is important to note that the ETS website actually lists every possible GRE writing prompt for you to look at before the test; take advantage of it.Kaplan's book also was good in terms of finding out what the test would look like. The CD-ROM included was superior for practicing for the real test. The program LOOKS like the real GRE program you'll test on and has similar questions. You'll get your score back as a percentage correct rather than scaled with this CD-ROM and it will help you know which question types you need to work on. It also provides detailed answers for each question so you can understand why you got things wrong. I recommend this book, particularly for its CD-ROM, but I also suggest using it with another book, such as Princeton Review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Detailed Guidbook
This book will give you an accurate look at the GRE. It will challenge you on your reading analysis skills and vocabulary.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book with the CD-ROM really helps simulate an actual CAT.
I bought the Kaplan GRE Premier Program 2008 edition that comes with the CD-Rom. Note: the CD is only compatible with Windows version 1.0. Though I personally found the book to be less effective than Barron's GRE prep book [for one, I thought Barron's was better organised and had more content in it], the CD-Rom by Kaplan was very useful.

The CD-rom provides access to practice tests for the verbal and quantitative components of the GRE [three tests each]. In addition, we get three CATs with the full exam on each [i.e. the written, verbal and quantitative components]. Once one takes the CATs, a score is provided scaled from 200-800 [except for the essays]. It also provides a detailed answer list with explanations. On the whole, this is a good buy for those preparing to take the GRE. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More of the same + Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes
Same as the old copy - even includes some of the old errors. That said, great concise preparation material. This+official tests and you are ready to go

3-0 out of 5 stars Really the Only Guide Available
The 4th edition adds about 50 or so more problems in the Additional Topics section. There are a brief couple pages added regarding Graph Theory and Algorithms but nothing substantial. However, there are a few typos in the newly added material. One notable example is that Contraposition is mislabled as Contradiction. The 4th edition is not significantly different from the 3rd edition other than the aforementioned changes.

The main complaint regarding Leduc's guide is a lack of exercises.Having taken the Mathematics Subject GRE just yesterday as of the writing of this review, I can honestly say that the major pitful encountered by most, including me, on the exam was the time constraint - an absurd 2 hours 50 minutes for 66 somewhat tricky to somewhat impossible to solve in 2.5 minutes mathematics questions.

The best use of this guide is to serve as a nexus for your studies, and augment your studies with a lot of other books and exercises. Nonetheless , since this guide is not terribly expensive, I recommend the purchase if you don't already have the 3rd edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Immensely helpful
I was looking to improve my reading comprehension skills and this book helped a lot.
All the practice passages have detailed explanation about both right and wrong answers - which is very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull - buy it
This is a very helpful book on Reading Section. One of the very few available ones on the market. I don't understand why there are so many books conserning LR and AR, and almost none conserning the reading. Reading was my most difficult section (as it is for many students- passages are long time is not enough, same problem..) and if there was more on the market about it I would have purchased it. Anyhow, this book is well written, explanatory, enough exercises.
The reason why I rate it with 4, not 5 stars is because it is not LSAT specific, but it also tells about MCAT, GMAT, etc. Which is important when it comes to the length of passages in the excercise section which takes up 130 out of 180 pages from the book. There are passages of different lengths from 30 to 80 lines, covering the formats of the passages given on GMAT, MCAT, etc. But what we need for LSAT - are passages of 55 - 60 lines so we can properly time ourselves and as we all know on the LSAT - TIME IS EVERYTHING.
In conclusion: helpful book - get it.
P.S. If the publishers get to see that - consider improving it.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book
I was preparing for GMAT and was very in Reading Comprehension. This book was helful to me especially the LSAT passages which were difficult compared to GMAT passages. explanations were good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Time-wasting if not skill-diminishing
I've read this book for LSAT prep. While the selection of passages is excellent, crafting of questions is simply a bad joke.To be precise, it is mostly the answer choices that makes this book time-wasting, if not skill-diminishing.The answer choices in this book are just not the kind of choices that appear in an actual test.Especially annoying is that many "right" answer choices can be right only after a very very long stretch of logic, which NEVER happens in a real test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool
This book helps the reader learn the correct way to annotate and outline the paragraphs on the reading comprehension section of the GRE*MCAT*LSAT*GMAT.It was very helpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Arco Gre Gmat Math Review by David Frieder
This is the best book yet for my math phobia!I am switching careers and need to take the GMAT again. The book is written in a simplified way that even I can understand.Never thought that math could be fun.Buy it, you'll like it...

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I've always been a math person, but because I passed all of my math requirements for college, I never took a single math class in college. But 5 years after graduating, I realized that I wanted to pursue business school, so this was one of the books I picked out mainly to brush-up on my math. WOW, THIS IS SUCH AN AWESOME BOOK. It covers the BASICS, but trust me, if you don't know them, you're completely screwed. There were plenty of rules I had forgotten and this book covered them ALL. And it even gives you GREAT practice on the yucky data-sufficiency questions. Sure the problems aren't extremely challenging, but again, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BASICS. SO GET THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but some wrong answers
I've read just up till part 2 of this book and the basics and examples plus exercises are great. however, i was working on problem 15, pg 134 and the answer should be -21 instead of -20 for a solution of x<-20. haven't read the rest, but guess you have to trust your own solutions are times. happy reading !

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably GOOD for GMAT but definitely NOT for GRE
I don't have this book but I've read its table of content. The material is TOO EASY for GRE in Math.Probably it is good for your GMAT but definitely not for GRE.It does not contain much information about Calculus and Algebra (well, it does contain elementary algebra which is not useful for GRE).If you're preparing for GRE in Math, do not choose this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars !!!
I found this book very useful as first step in GMAT Math. Zero step was math refreshener, but ARCO math is perfect to go into GMAT Math orbit. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great
This book definitely helps take away some test anxiety by explaining that it is ok to be overwhelmed by how difficult the test is. It gives great studying tips and explanations for the exam.

I must confess that I admire that this book admits that it cannot cover everything; however, it left out a major components that were on my exam. I took the exam in April '07 and was slammed in the face with post-modern and even contemporary literature from around the globe. Tough questions, not the basics that we all should know by now. Also, the criticism questions dealt with things not even mentioned in the book. I'm talking like 20% of the test being on things I never anticipated. So much for getting rid of test anxiety.

To be fair, I have yet to find any kind of study help for this growing section of the exam. Just be advised that this book skipped it completely. So you'd better find it elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best you can expect
The Princeton Review does a great job of addressing how eclectic and difficult this test will be.Students that are used to breezing through exams are prepared to be surprised and challenged by the extent of material this exam covers.(For example, when was the last time you reviewed your Greek and Roman Mythology?Edmund Spenser?Derrida?Yeah.)Everybody has their own complaints about the GRE, but I think this book gives you a plan of study that will help fill in the gaps with the esoteric bits of information that ETS expects all English scholars to know.Princeton Review won't help you all the way, though -- they give you some good ideas but a lot of it is just on your own.Spend quality time with your Norton (Vol 1 and 2 are standard fare).Be aware that Princeton does not cover much after 1900, yet you WILL need to know that stuff for the exam.I love that this book does not talk down to the reader - it presents a refreshing kind of challenge, as opposed to the General GRE (useless, useless, useless...)For a review book, I think its the best you can expect to find.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make your life easier...
I am a doctoral student at a very competitive university.A couple weeks ago I was talking with some other students in my department about studying for the GRE Lit Subject Test.We all used this book.Everybody.

The author formulates what he calls a "points-to-pages ratio" to help readers triage their exam reading lists. For example, he points out that the English Bible is about 3,000 pages long and there will be 2 or 3 questions (out of 230) about it on the test.Good thinking. He also does a pretty good job breaking down the various schools of literary criticism and theory (as the testmakers tend to see them) and his sample test with explanations is a lot more helpful than the sample tests you can buy from ETS.

All in all, this book is well worth [the price] since you already have to pay $150 to take the test!

5-0 out of 5 stars You MUST buy this book!
McMullen's plan of attack for the GRE Literature in English subject test is superb.Following that plan over several months (and doing LOTS of reading on my own) I went from a score on my first practice exam in the 35th percentile (I didn't major in English) to an actual score on the test a few months later of 660 (88th percentile).Had I managed my time better, as McMullen recommended, I probably would have cracked the 90th percentile.

A word of caution, however:Do not expect the book alone to boost your scores. It won't.This is an extremely difficult test and you will need to do a great deal of reading to prepare.McMullen will tell you WHAT to read and HOW, but there is no substitute for doing the hard work.If you want to go to graduate school in English, you won't mind the reading and it will probably help you in the long run anyway. If that much reading intimidates you, then don't even bother with the book and forget about graduate school altogether.

2-0 out of 5 stars A necessary evil
Thinking back, there does seem to have been a gap between what they claimed would feature on the test and what actually did. Is there any better? I'm doubtful that there is, but it probably wouldn't hurt to look. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Why pay $270 for something you can download for free?
If you check out Harvard University's page about the physics GRE (google "harvard GRE physics") they have links to the four practice tests in this book along with a link to a comprehensive website where you can enter the test number and question number to get the solution plus how to get the solution.

$270 is outrageous. It's not worth 1 cent now!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of the GRE Physics Test
I used this book to prepare for a test in early 2002 and was surprised at the amount of similar questions posed on the actual exam. It's true that ETS recycles many of the test questions each year and the Physics test is no exception. If you are looking strictly for more in-depth test taking strategies then you should consider another book, as for practicing on actual test questions this book wins hands-down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book you want to see before the test.
This book neither tells you how to solve the problems nor what knowledge you are expected to have before the test. This book contains only problems and answers. When you think you are ready for the test, this is the book you want to use. This book contains four actual tests and helps you time your exam and get used to the style of the exam.I found "Physics: The Easy Way by Robert L. Lehrman" a good book to review the kind of things asked in GRE physics test.In GRE physics test you are asked a hundred small questions which can be solved almost without calculation. You want to review the essentials and get used to the style of the exam for high score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just the tests
Sadly, this publication by ETS contains nothing but 3 old GRE physicsexams of (presumably) retired questions. The correct answers and thescoring statistics are given, but there is nothing in the way ofexplanation or discussion or strategies for attacking the test.Still, youshould probably get this because its the only place you can get your handson ETS's actual problems.Other books that purport to train you for theGRE often disturbingly misunderstand what kind of things ETS expects you toknow and do on the exam. This book is only helpful if you invest a lot oftime in it, but I still reccommend it highly if you plan on taking thephysics GRE.

4-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive and practical
with detailed explaination and cogent coaching, this book provides a hand-on way to tackle GRE questions ... Read more
