3-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you want a false sense of confidence
I studied from this book for two weeks in preparation for the GRE general test.I found the lessons within quite helpful for taking the practice tests in the book. However, I was highly disappointed to find that the questions in the book were nowhere near as difficult as the ones on the actual test.As such I felt severely under-prepared and over-confident.

If you're going to study from this book, keep these two things in mind:

1. This book is really aimed at the test taker who is primarily concerned with the basic level of material. Those quite challenged or rusty on basic math skills and hoping for average scores on both verbal and math will be helped by this book. Those more advanced test takers looking for material to help them hone their already proficient math and verbal skills, to squeeze those extra few points out of the exam, will be disappointed.

2.The actual questions on the GRE test are more like the "advanced" or "difficult" level of material in this book.Unless you're at the really basic level, studying the easy and moderate categories in this book will be useless, they're much too basic compared to what you'll find on the test. The charts and graphs section I felt was particularly misleading.

Perhaps if the "difficult" level questions were more plentiful in the book, I might have gotten a more accurate impression of the actual test questions. But I really only got 1 or maybe 2 of the other levels on my test.I realize it is an adaptive test, so those at the lower levels may not have the same experience as me, and should probably find this book a better guide than I did.In any case I would have felt better prepared if I'd experienced more of the harder questions in practice.

This is the only book I used so I don't have an alternate to suggest.I did buy the princeton review book to get access to the online practice tests, which were closer to the real thing, but still not a very good representation, and the interface was slow and clumsy. The nice thing is that they score your practice test to give you an indication of your expected performance. But my scores on the practice tests averaged about 150 points higher than my actual exam score, so I was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for review
This text provides an excellent overview of what to expect on the GRE.There is an example test in the back as well as varied levels of difficulty for each subsection.i.e. reading comprehension, algerbra, geometry.Best for the money for a quick review and not a lot of time on your hands. To provide a warning verbal on this test is difficult this text includes a breakdown of the most common root, prefixes, and suffixes to help test takers.

4-0 out of 5 stars 7th edition a good math starting point
- Generally a useful book in both math and verbal, though barren in real advice for the writing sections. (Just go online for that.)

- Organized poorly in that the "Basic Math Review" is at the very end of the book, right before taking the practice test. This is silly in that it's probably the first thing a test taker would want to work on before embarking on problems.

- The layout is nice because there are a few different text sizes, making information easier to locate. There is also a little more white space on the page than in most books, which is useful for taking notes and making you feel less overwhelmed.

- The test in the back is "adaptive." That means you have to check your answers to determine what section to move on to. This is both an advantage and a little annoying. Probably gives you a more accurate score.

- Emphasizes understanding the instructions given, which is a good idea.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Verbal & Quantitative, Analytical Could Be Better
I used two books to prepare for the GRE. I started with REA's Math Builder for Admission & Standardized Tests which is fraught with errors and presents mathematical concepts in a disconnected manner, but at least loosened 18 years of rust.

Then I studied every single page and did every single problem (some twice)in GRE CBT. I completed both sets of timed tests. I felt more than ready for the computer-based GRE. I was indeed well-prepared for the Verbal & Quantitative tests. However, I had problems in the Analytical.

The good news is that the test-taking tips are good. I'm an execellent test-taker, but I still got a few new ideas. Plus the first sample test gives you an idea of how you will flow through to easier or more difficult questions. And the problems are generally well-edited so you don't often hit those frustrating errors in the questions. This becomes less true at the end of the book, but by then you should have a handle on when you're right and the book is wrong.

The Verbal and Quantitative preparation is good. The verbal questions definitely stretched my vocabulary and the math questions covered almost everything that I saw on the actual GRE. I did astonishingly well on both sections.

The Analytical prep is good for half of that test, drawing conclusions from text passages. My problem was with the logic puzzles. The book has a multitude of samples, but none of them were as difficult as the ones I encountered on the test. Since I had aced every single puzzle in the book, I was completely unprepared for the speed at which I was expected to work on some very difficult problems. I ran out of time with 1/3 of the questions remaining. Fortunately, that turned out to be a "pre-screen" unscored section and I paced myself better on my godsent second chance.

This is a good study guide. I still recommend it. However if you expect to be working at the high end of the difficulty range, I recommend that you also purchase a second study guide that has a better Analytical section.

And here's a free tip that's in neither book. Study with mild distractions in the background. The computer test center is not quiet. Someone will be typing an essay while you're trying to remember a math formula. Every few minutes, someone walks behind you to get in or out. The chairs creak like crazy. While I was studying, I cursed my two-year-old's Barney videos. While I was testing, I blessed them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful, but verging on obsolete
I'm certain that I did better on the GRE than I would have without having read this book. However, there must be better books out there. For one thing, this one (2nd edition) spends an awful lot of time on strategy forthe pencil-and-paper version of the GRE.I don't know of any place in theUS that doesn't offer the computer-adaptive version, and it's myunderstanding that the vast majority of US test sites will not *let* youtake the pencil-and-paper version.Let's hope the book's 3rd edition takesthat into account and gives more strategy info on the computer-adaptivetest.

Then there were all those typos.Big ole honkin' errorseverywhere. So the practice tests were almost worthless. They were alsoarranged in such a manner that I had to use three bookmarks to refer backand forth after each section.Very annoying, and the book's squat shapewouldn't let the pages stay open by themselves, so I always had to use ahand or a knee or something to anchor them down.

Where the book does giveuseful information, it doesn't give enough. There was a little section(about a page) on math formulas, which was nice, but what I really neededwas a page or two of those little math "tricks"--those shortcutsyou learn in high school and promptly forget until the next time you take amath class (which is a looooong time for some of us).

I would have giventhis book one star, but a) it was better than nothing, and b) there *is* a3rd edition out, so maybe there's hope.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a piece of junk
All of the study suggestions and coaching seemed very helpful...UNTIL I took the three practice tests in the book.Several of the answers the book gives are totally wrong, mainly typos on math problems. This casts doubton the accuracy of the rest of the material in the book.Typos are to beexpected in any book. But somebody should have checked to make sure theanswers matched up with the questions before this thing was published. This is a seriously sloppy editing job.I'm sure there's a better GREstudy book out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor proof-reading undermines this book's value.
This pass key could benefit from a more careful locksmith. Multiple proof-reading errors_in questions, answer keys and solution explanations_made studying with this book almost as challenging as takingthe test. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Review
The cards were kind of helpful. I feel like they didnt really prepare me too much for the test. There are so many large words that I never really learned any new ones. And there is no way to know what words will be on the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ben
Helps you learn the vocab of the GRE and a great accompaniment to the Kaplan GRE study guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to reinfoce all those annoying words!!!!
Welcome to the part of the English language that you will never use!

The flash cards helped in preparation for the GRE.I do not agree with the GRE being as vocabulary-intensive as it is -- I would prefer that it would focus on cogent communication skills as opposed to bombastic vocabulary that only GRE test writers use in everyday communication.Anyway, I digress.

These helped in conjunction with other study skills.I also acquired the Kaplan test prep book and the "Cracking the GRE" test prep book.

They also have a high resale value!I was able to post them at auction after the test and almost recovered the full value!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny and every minute of your time
These cards are perfect. About 80% of the words I saw on the GRE were in this pack. I memorized every word in this box, and as a result scored in the 95th percentile. I see that other reviewers have commented that the definitions are insufficient, but I disagree. The definition and synonyms that these cards give you are what you need to select the correct answer on the GRE. You don't need a thorough understanding of the word- in fact, I think that might make it more difficult. I'm a very satisfied customer. I highly recommend this product.

4-0 out of 5 stars GRE Vocab Cards
Bought these cards to study for the GRE general test. I haven't taken the test yet, so I can't comment on how many of these words showed up on the test. But as for the cards themselves, they seem to be pretty good. I knew 30-35% of the words before-hand, but that still left hundreds of words to learn. There is a good variety of words in the cards, but the definitions were definitely lacking. They seemed to all be 3-4 word definitions made up by the author, rather than dictionary definitions. Sometimes I agreed with them, sometimes they seemed really wacky. And the synonyms were pretty vague as well, sometimes barely relating.

The card stock was somewhat light. These aren't thick index card stock, but they aren't super thin either. Good enough, but sometimes the cards get stuck together and you don't even notice.

Overall they are good, with a good variety of words. Hopefully they help me out on the test ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful. Wrong. Amateur.
There are typos about every other page, and often there are outright mistakes. It is typeset by someone who does not understand mathematics; for example the greek letter phi is used where a line integral symbol is supposed to be. The questions are not representative of the actual GRE exam. It's just a bunch of junk questions thrown together in order to make some money. The review section is of similar caliber.

Worse, there are cases where the book not only gives the wrong answer, but even *explains* the wrong answer! Example: a classic four-petal polar plot is shown, and we are asked what its equation is. The answer is 2cos(2t). But the book tells us the answer is 2cos(4t), explaining, "The four petals in the figure indicate that the equation must contain an argument proportional to 4t." Wrong, wrong, wrong! That's exactly what the answer might *appear* to be on first impression. cos(2t) has *four* petals, that's the whole point of the question!

I have compared three different editions of this book (2002, 2009, 2010) and all are *exactly* the same. The review section and the practice tests are identical, with the same page numbers and all. This makes the many mistakes even more unprofessional--they just keep reprinting the same thing with a new cover. They don't even bother with corrections.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can be helpful, if used correctly
First of all, the review section in this book is worthless. The real reason that you would buy this book would have to be the 6 practice tests.

Do not attempt to do the first four tests or the last (Test I - IV, VI) since you will almost certainly not be able to complete them. Instead, go through each question in these four tests and if you can't do one then mark the problem, look at the book's solution and learn how they did it. Try doing the marked problems again in a couple of days.

Some of these problems have solutions that are so complex that you know that they will not be on the GRE so just ignore them or try to think of simpler solutions (several of these very difficult problems do have simpler solutions than what the book shows, and this will help prepare you for the hard problems on the GRE).

The second to last test (Tests V) is, in my opinion, representative of the real GRE test. Take this tests like you would a regular practice GRE.

There are typos in the practice tests and some mistakes, but I did not find this to cause much trouble.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, but no updates
This books gives you a clear understanding abour Sub GRE topics, especially if you are non math grad and want to take test. Half of the book reviews fundamental topics which are going to be tested in test.

6 exercises although they are not same as original test, gives you good practice, few problems are harder than the original GRE, but they gives you good grip over subject.

But the recent edition was published in 99, yet no other upgrades, test is rescaled in 01.

I suggest this book to all test takers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not really GRE style, but better than nothing
I can only summarize what other customers have already said about this book. The test problems are really different from those that ETS itself hands out and those of the (unfortunately single) test exam in "Cracking the GRE Math Subject Test". Worse is that often the knowledge that is asked is not required for the real test, more intricate and neither covered in the "review" nor in the explanation of the correct answer.
However it is the only book, that provides a sufficient number of full-length practice exams with a look-and-feel which is similar to that of a GRE subject test, therefore I still give it a 3 out of 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just Awful
First, many of the types of questions in the 6 practice exams are pointless to study, since you won't encounter anything remotely resembling them on the real GRE. Second, the explanations of the solutions are rarely satisfactory. Third, the review section is a complete joke and, like the questions in the practice exams, many of the topics it covers are completely worthless with regards to the GRE (e.g. cubic spline interpolation, fourier series). I didn't read the review section very thoroughly (though I did glance over subtitles, so I know that a lot of time-wasting material was included), but what I did look at in some depth was poorly explained.
All of this said, the book isn't entirely useless. If you use it as a companion to a better GRE prep book (cracking the GRE) and have a discerning eye for what will and won't be necessary to study, it does offer some good review questions if you have time to weed through it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide
I loved this guide to review biology for the GRE. I also used my basic biology book. These two, with intense studying, made for a good experience and great scores.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan GRE Biology Book
The book came quickly and is in great condition.

So far the book has been very informative and seems like it will really help with the test.

Overall, it was a good book and a very good dealer to buy it from.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worst than I expected
I used the second edition of this book to study for the biology GRE.
The book is ok if you want a general perspective. However, when you go into detail, the book simplifies to much and some things in the book are wrong.
Also, I purchased it mainly for the practice test, which I found was poorly constructed because the graphs were messy and the questions were ambiguous and some had the wrong answer marked as correct. The booklets from ETS are a better practice for the real thing.
I used a general biology book to study as well as this one, and the general biology book was much better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
I bought this book two weeks before the BioGRE in order to bone up on anything that may have slipped my mind since freshmen bio class. The review section in the beginning of the book was ok, though it went into insane amounts of detail. I took the "practice test" in the back, which was so different from the actual test I wanted to scream. The actual test is far more clearly written, thought out, and fair.

This book also gives a section to explain why you got that one question wrong about how bacteria reproduce. Sounds great, right? Wrong. Sometimes the explanations say things like "Answers B, C, and E can be eliminated because they are wrong. Answer D is the correct choice. Answer A is also a good choice." How helpful!

Save your money and read another review book or your freshmen bio text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Future test taker you might wanna read this
I took my Biology GRE last November (2006). I got my score like a month ago and I was very disappointed. If you read the reviews for the new edition you'll find one reviewer talking about this book needs to be revised. And all I'm gonna tell you is he/she is 110% correct.
If you are taking the test in April or later, consider NOT buying this book. I used this book, the Princeton review book and Campbell to study for the test. And I didn't get a 90 percentile or above, which totally enraged me since it felt like everything that was in this book was not on the test (I focused very much on the topics found in this book). I can't reveal the exact questions but let me just describe the kind of problems on the test (I bet future test takers would be curious). The most shocking question on the test I took must be the one where it mixed reproductive organs (anatomy) with evolutionary biology. There were 5 consecutive problems dealing with history stuff like when did this go extinct and when did that originated. It was just painful for me since I'm a big cell and molecular person. There were even matching problems where the student was supposed to match up the name of a specific gene (I mean very specific, at least that's what I thought) with its function or responsible disease or symptoms or body structure.
Honestly I was quite devastated by the difficulty of the test, especially it felt like everything I studied did not show up on the test. If you're from Harvard or Yale or whatever, don't even bother studying because you're the people who get the 99 percentile. But for the rest of us (well excluding me), study your Campbell Biology textbook. And be sure to cover everything in the book. You'll be surprised when you see problems that you absolutely don't have a clue on the test. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Book is Good, but the Version with the CD is Better
This book just contains "flashcards" with GRE vocabulary words on them. There are no test hints, and there is no test prep coaching in this book. I say "flashcards" because they aren't meant to be taken out of the book, but you could cut them out and use them as a traditional flashcard if you chose to do so. Also, there are three vocab words per page.

Each flashcard has the word with a space underneath it where you can write what you think the definition of that word is. The backside of the page contains the definition of that word and a sentence using the word in context. There are also some blank flashcards in the back so that you can make your own questions, and those cards are meant to be cut out. There is also an alphabetical word index in the back of the book.

I don't have an iPhone, so I haven't used the app and can't comment on its effectiveness.

There is another version of this book that includes a CD. It costs a few dollars more than this version, but the CD is helpful. It includes a dictionary that you can customize with the words you need to work on. There is also a matching game and a cross word puzzle game. Both games give you the option of using the entire word bank or just using the words from your custom dictionary. The CD also includes some reading exercises and a vocabulary enhancer chart. Just another option to consider. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars In response to David J. Wilkinson
This is in respose to David J. Wilkinson
f(n)=n is NOT a constant function

Just to write n in binary you need log(n) space/time
remember, we are not talking about what happens in a C/C++ or some other compiler. We are talkign about theory here. In C you would represent a number as lets say 32 bit int, in that case the function f(n) is constant, assuming n is always less than 2^32, but this is not true for the general case.

2-0 out of 5 stars f(n) = n is a constant funciton
Just so no one studying for the test gets confused, f(n) = n is in fact a constant funciton.

In this context constant means that its execution time does not vary based on the imput.

Compare this to a bubble short algorithm where the excecution time would vary accourding to the square of the number of items.

So 10 item would take 100c time units to sort, 1000 items would take 1 million!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lets be fair, it does what it is supposed to do.
Having read all the reviews I am not quite sure why people are so unhappy. Yes, this is not an exciting page turner, but it is not supposed to be.It sais on the cover "4 Full-Length Exams" and this is what you get, sample exams and explanations for questions. There will never be a book that will tell you how to "crack" the CS GRE, because such a book would have to contain the information of about five textbooks.

The only way to study for a CS GRE is to use this book to get an idea of the questions (plus the sample test ETS sends you). If you cannot answer the question then go to a textbook and read the corresponding chapters, so when you come back you can answer the question.

Ideally, you are a CS Junior in Undergrad and know that you will be taking this test. This way study for this from the start, while still in class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can there really be no alternative?
OK, this book is terrible, like everyone said.I didn't buy it: I got it free from a colleague at work.I used it for the sole purpose of practicing answering CS-type questions quickly and filling in the bubbles. Here are a few of my pet peeves:

1) The book assumes an expert-level knowledge of PASCAL and no knowledge of C.The sample test from ETS requred only basic C and PASCAL.Since I didn't know PASCAL at all (who does these days?) until I studied for the GRE, I really hope that the ETS test is closer to the real thing.

2)Questions that are far more difficult (both in terms of knowledge required and time required to answer) than anything in the ETS sample GRE.There are questions where the "explanation" is more than 2 pages long.

3)Errors.To take one example I just met, they think that f(n) = n is a constant function.

4)Ambiguity/unstated assumptions in question.

To sum up, yes, this book [bites].Don't pay any money for it.And come on -- will someone out there write a decent GRE CS review book??

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Test Preparation Book EVER
If you are thinking about taking the GRE Computer Science test, buying a review book is probably a good idea. However, do not, under any circumstances, buy this one.If you cannot find a better review book, consider buying the latest Michael Crichton novel, or perhaps a collection of The Far Side comics, because either of them would be more useful for test preparation than this book.

I bought this book in preparation for taking my GRE subject test, and was incredibly discouraged after taking some of the sample tests contained within. Most of the questions I was unable to answer, and the answers given in the book often left me scratching my head and wondering what the writers were talking about.I was about to actually cancel my appointment to take the test, when I decided to give the official sample test sent to me by ETS a try.On that test, I was able to score in the 91st percentile.I haven't taken my official test yet (it is tomorrow morning), but, assuming that the real test is not drastically different from the official sample (a real test from 1996), the questions in this book bear no resemblance to any of the questions on the real test. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Stories that bring to mind...
As an SAT tutor for JBG Tutors (Dover, MA), I have become very familiar with Kaplan's test prep materials. I have found Kaplan's Word Power to be a very useful tool for helping my students learn challenging SAT vocabulary. The short stories in the book, comprised of 15 vocab words each, are entertaining and easy reads. Having a story context to relate the vocab words with helps SAT students associate the definitions with real life scenarios. All in all this is a great book for SAT prep and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mark's Review
The definitions were sometimes confusing or just not very good. I had to look them up sometimes. The first section has words that are too easy and the last section has words that are too hard and probably won't show up on the test. It's still OK if your standards aren't too high and it might depend o the test you're studying for. I was studying for the GRE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Will help a lot if you put a little time into it
This book has been a huge help for me for improving my vocabulary in preparation for the GREs. The stories may not always be Pulitzer prize quality, but they can still be helpful for remembering some of the more obscure words. I'm a big fan overall.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly mediocre
I have a two hour commute each day and I'm trying to utilize that time in some positive fashion.I'm studying for the GRE and was looking for something I could listen to that would contribute to this goal/project.This was a waste of money, since I knew 98% of the words. Also, a few words I thought were not very well described, and the sentances were contrived. The way they use two words with the same root in a sentance seems to be a sure fire way in my book to help someone confuse the two words' meaning. On the plus side, buying this CD set has now made me see the futility of this method of studying for the GRE, and saved me from investing in a more expensive CD set.If like me, you're studying for the GRE, my advice to you is to set aside time to read scholarly journals or essay collections, dictionary in hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent GRE prep book
I bought this book on the recommendation of the masters program administrator at a major university because my score on the verbal portion of my first GRE test was unacceptable (at least to me and I'm sure the university).I was somewhat leary about how a single book could select an accurate list of words from the thousands of potential choices and actually have the selected words appear on the test, but I had little time before my second test and I needed to prepare somehow.

The book is divided into 3 sections, 1) words you should know, 2) words for a good score on the test and 3) words for word geeks and a great score on the test.I studied with the book for 3 weeks before my second GRE test. The first section was truly words you should know and I spent little time on that section. The second section is where I spent 95% of my study time and the third section I merely glanced at as I'm not a word geek.

I'll let the results of my second test speak for the effectiveness of the book.During the entire verbal section of the test there were only one or two words I didn't recognize (I'm not saying I remembered the definitions of them all!!), but at least I recognized them and had something to work with. It's true that the verbal section has multiple components, only one of which relies heavily on knowing the definition of key words, but I raised my score on the overall verbal section 180 points from my first test.I credit the words in the second section of the book for most of this improvement.I don't know how the authors knew what words frequently appear on the test, but they were absolutely spot on, as I got a good score as advertised and the words in the second section of the book did indeed appear frequently on the test. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good GRE review material
This book is loaded with strategies to help learn how to take the GRE. Am loving its explanations and how it gets right down to the nitty gritty to assist in finding the correct answer as fast as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This product came super fast and in the exact condition that was described online! Would definitely buy from them again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, not too dry
Of the three books I bought to study for the GRE, this is my favorite. The writers have a good sense of humor and help to establish the right approaches to the various parts of the exam. The only part that I think could be improved is the math section. Math is the greatest challenge for me and I found some of the explanations inadequate.I think they could "dumb it down" a bit more. Of course, this may be more of a reflection on my math skills than it is a criticism of the book! The vocabulary and writing hints are excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful tips but has mistakes
I have been through the entire verbal portion of this book and found some very useful tips that I would not have thought of on my own.The quantitative review has also been useful but I have found 2 mistakes. The first tries to tell you that x^2 is equal to 1/4 when x=-(1/2).It should actually be equal to -(1/4) because as the book itself tells you, a negative number squared is always negative. The second mistake was in the following formula: -25-0 out of 5 stars Excellent GRE prep
The Princeton Review GRE books are wonderful in helping prepare students to take the test. I just took the test this morning, and decided I wanted to write reviews for all of the study aides I used. The Princeton Review book is very well-written and straightforward. It's overwhelming at first, and I found that the best way to go was to buy study aides at least a month in advance and just focus on one section at a time. I read this book cover-to-cover and many of their hints helped me a lot (such as, on analogies where you do not know all of the words either in the analogy given or in the answer choices, to eliminate those sets of words that have no relation to one another). Much of what was in the book seemed like common sense once I read it and mastered it, but I wouldn't have thought of it without the help of the book. The writing section was especially helpful to me, with great breakdowns of how to write both essays. The only thing I was slightly disappointed with was the online area where it says you have access to two full length practice tests. I could only access one, but as I had also purchased a Barron's book that had access to give, it wasn't a huge deal. Still, you should be aware that I could only find one practice test online, so if you want more I'd recommend also buying the Barron's book, which is also very helpful. I highly recommend this book! ... Read more

I bought this book based on the fact it had computer tests along with written tests. When you use their tech support site, it becomes apparent the disc was released with problems.Every version of Windows has a fix, except Windows 7.They haven't worked that one out yet.

When you call and select customer support, your call ends in a disconnect. When you call the operator, she gives you another number that also disconnects you.I left tech support an email, fifteen days later they responded by asking me to send them the exact error message.(I had already returned the product.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but doesn't work on Windows 7
This book had everything from a CD to multiple options such as paper tests and online information.I really like the availability of the resources- BUT the CD did not work on my computer because I have Windows 7.The highest this CD can work on is Windows Vista.I do not think it works on Mac computers. So if you have Vista enjoy the CD if not- it's still an okay but but for the price just get one without a CD or that works on 7.

5-0 out of 5 stars the right choice
If you are in doubt to buy among different brands I tell you...The KAPLAN for GRE is a nice option. I worked with their product before when I taked the Toefl and now with the GRE I am surprised...is very self explanatory...the book talks to you.
there are the introductory part, the grammar is well explained with very usefull hints...the math part is great, you get involved with your studies...do it! KAPLAN is a good material.

4-0 out of 5 stars CD Review
After reading a couple of the reviews on amazon, and I was hesitant about whether or not the CD would be compatible with my computer. I have Windows 7 Home Premimum, and the CD works fine with my computer. I did not have any problems at all. I cannot say anything about the practice tests or content in this book since I just got the book in the mail today. I just wanted to reassure those that have windows 7 that the CD works fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended pick for any student taking the advanced placement exams
GMAT PREMIER 2011 provides a fine test preparation guide packed with invaluable details, from a practice test and its detailed answer explanations to strategies for raising scores, an extensive online companion, and a CD holding 18 practice tests and four computer-adaptive tests. Expert instructors share their insider tips for top results! The GRE PREMIER 2011 offers a similar format, pairing a book packed with practice questions and strategies with tips for success and an online companion paired with a CD.Both are highly recommended picks for any student taking the advanced placement exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars A complete review
So, i was frustrated with kaplan in the beginning because the CD wasn't working on my windows 7 computer. Don't waste your time calling kaplan's customer service because from what i've read in online forums, they don't know how to deal with it. However, i came across a thread on microsoft's website about the MCI drivers the CD asks for and here's a way to get around it: Install the CD on your computer, remove it from your computer and restart your computer in safe mode ( hit the F8 key while the black screen is on just before the windows logo appears) and just select the safe mode option. I know some people with vista who select the 'safe mode with command prompt' but i discovered that selecting just the "safe mode" option works perfectly. Once your computer is started, insert the CD and click on the icon and viola!, it should work like a charm. I have a HP windows 7 laptop and it worked wonderfully.

So once you get around the frustration, you'll find that the CD has about 6 quantitative test and about the same amount of verbal tests or a little less. There are 3 CAT exams on the CD. The exams on the CD actually simulate the real exams way better than the diagnositic i took online. Go figure!
The online companion has 5 exams as well as tons of practice exams and what nots. I actually have both the kaplan MCAT and kaplan GRE. The GRE premier is good for a year, at least the online thing says it'll expire august, 2011 compared to the MCAT premier that's only good for 6 months. I read other reviews that the exams and quizzes online weren't available but so far, all of them are showing up at the same time.

The book itself isn't as comprehensive as i was hoping for it to be. it really doesn't have much content. I think you should get the princeton review book and read that first. Also, i recommend kaplan flash cards or barrons essential words for the GRE. Barron's has more words in addition to kaplans 500. i like how kaplan gives synonyms at the back of the cards along with the sentences. Barrons doesn't give synonyms but the exercises at the end of each of the 10 word lists helps you to understand the word. Better still, the kaplan flashcards have the pronunciations which i think is a great asset.
All in all, this book is ok but i highly recommend the princeton review or barrons in addition to this as kaplan doesn't have much of a content. I like princeton's strategy so far.i gave it 4 stars cuz it's not complete and also for the frustration that comes with searching for ways to use the CD. I hope this helps. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good
the book itself is good, but the content of the book is not so good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but harder than the real thing
I used this as a review guide for the Biochem GRE.I'd only taken a one-summer biochem class, so I was feeling weak in that area, although confident about the rest. The book has good organization, and doesn't go too in-depth into one topic at the expense of others.

The biggest problem I had with it was that it was much harder than the real test!I was very worried that I was going to do terribly, and this made me more anxious than I should have been.In the last few days before I took the one real exam that I had, and it was much easier than the book's questions. There were much more biochem pathway trivia in the book than on the real exam.

There are some factual errors in this book, and hopefully future editions will get a little more proofreading.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I received the product very quickly. It was tough to find a GRE book for the biochemistry subject test because there are few out there. Since there are no biochem test prep books to compare this to, I'd have to give this one a thumbs up for its straight to the point style.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT very professional
I found many typos in this book - the carbon atom has 5 covalent bonds sticking out in the diagram, the math derivation seems not coherent, etc.

I am a little disappointed since the book was written by two PhDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Will waste your time
I have only read the first five pages and it has obvious critical errors.I will have to abandon it for fear of learning more mis-information.

This book has probably never been edited by a scientist.

4-0 out of 5 stars GRE woreds
The best part is the master list. Once you know the words, you don't really need the strategy. I know that there are some additional master word lists on the website, but you probably won't need them as this book covers well enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not prepare me enough - don't believe the reviews!
I used this book (and the Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE) to prepare for the PSY GRE. I knew both books cold, and scored extremely highly on all the included practice tests. I have taken a few PSY classes but was not a PSY major, so I relied on the prep materials (especially since they were highly reviewed here) to help get me a good score on the exam.

I took the test today and there were a TON of topics that I'd never seen before, that were definitely not covered by the prep books. I expected to see a few things I didn't know, but I wound up skipping a lot more questions than I'd thought I would. All the students I spoke with afterwards said the same thing -- that the exam was way harder than they'd anticipated, and that their test prep did not prepare them for the exam.

I had anticipated finishing in under two hours, but it took me the full exam period -- and it took every single other person in the room the full exam period as well. This goes against what I'd heard about previous versions of the exam, so my guess is that ets is getting wise to the test prep books and using alternate material for the exams. (Hey, it's their perogative!)

Anyway, all in all I was "OK" prepared for this exam and will probably get an "OK" score, but I made the mistake of relying too heavily on the prep book. I used Kaplan's prep book as my primary preparation for the General GRE and got very high scores, so I anticipated the same experience with the PSY GRE... my bad. Different test, I guess.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Princeton Review vs. Kaplan
I studied from two books: The Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE and Kaplan's GRE Psychology. I never had a psychology class in college - I'm a chemist - most of this was new. But I scored an 800 on the test, apparently, 99th percentile. Here were my impressions:

Kaplan - Much more thorough than Princeton Review's; it was very dense and seemed to try to touch on every concept that might be a question on the test. This can be a bit overwhelming and certainly confusing, as I noticed numerous typos, contradictions, and other errors that sent me to the web for clarification and correction. The book's organization is poorer for review than The Princeton Review's, so keep your own notes and keep them organized.

Cracking the GRE - I enjoyed the presentation and the organization of the material. It was straightforward, covered the basics, and clean with upbeat, if cheesy, dialogue and photos. It made it easier to learn, but left out a lot that was in Kaplan. This is a quick review for someone without much time, but NOT for someone, like me, who knows nothing about psychology.

Both books contained some information not found in the other (this was more true for Kaplan than "Cracking"). Also, there were questions on the test wholly unrelated to anything I'd studied in either book. I suspect then, no prep book can prepare you completely for the test. Likewise, the books' sample tests will not reliably predict your performance, since the questions on the books' practice tests rarely require knowledge not supplied in the books.
If you're crunched for time, just get Kaplan's book and move on to "Cracking" ifyou've mastered the first. If you're really crunched for time, say a week or two, just go for "Cracking". But if you have the time, get both books. I found they supported each other and I learned enough to score better than most. Read "Cracking" first to get the test material straight in your mind, then Kaplan to fill in the gaps. In taking book practice tests, and the official ETS one (an absolute MUST since it seems more difficult), don't get too upset if you don't have a clue on some questions. I skipped about 5 questions on the actual test and I guessed on at least 10 more and I still did well.

Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Fancy, But Reliable
This text features concise information printed on telephone-book like paper. This aside, my GRE Psychology subject test scores were excellent. I used this book along with six months worth of steady study time and am extremely pleased with the outcome. If you've had undergraduate courses in clinical, abnormal, developmental, experimental, and social psychology, then this book is good as a stand-alone test preparatory tool. If, however, you lack any of the above courses or want some extra reassurance come test day, then I'd suggest studying with an undergraduate general psychology text as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful review-impossible to cover everything
I found Kaplan's Psychology review to be easy to get through and an effective study aid. The chapters were divided by subject matter and covered all major topics. It was a good refresher for those who studied psychology previously. I also used an introductory psychology text book, which I would recommend if you have time. I was disappointed that there were quite a few typos, some of which made the material confusing or contradictory.

The questions in the Kaplan book were fairly indicative of what you find on the actual exam and my practice scores were in line with my actual score. At the last minute I also bought REA's book of practice exams which were very different from the actual test. The two provided by Kaplan were sufficient.

It is impossible to cover everything that could be on the exam, and even using both the Kaplan book and a text, I found there were concepts on the exam that I either was not familiar with or had not studied in these books. However, I felt very prepared overall for the exam after extensive studying of this book and would highly recommend it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Get Barron's instead!
I thought this was one of the more reputable GRE books, so I started my GRE studying with this book and unfortunately spent most of my time (up to two weeks before the GRE) on it. Then I opened up my Barron's book, and said "This is SO much better than the other book!" I really regret spending so much time with the Princeton Review. Needless to say, I spent the next two weeks cramming with Barron's. End result: 1490. Get Barron's instead. I'm not sure I used any of the info I learned in Princeton's.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRE Review
The product consists of a text and DVD. The text is very readable, although some questions run afar from everyday practice except for mathematicians and the engineering sciences. The presentation provides sample reading comprehension and vocabulary consistent with the form and content on the GRE. The mathematics is divided by level of difficulty.i.e.easy, intermediate and difficult questions

The difficult questions are just that. i.e.

GIVEN:Given m+ n = 24 andm - n + p= 15 then 4m + 2p = what number

m+ n= 24
m- n+p= 15
__________________
2m + p= 39therefore4m + 2p must be 78

The section on vocabulary is helpful to identify typical
words tested. Overall, the book is excellent; however,
parts of the exam are elusive.

This is not the fault of the publisher. It is the nature of
the exam itself. If purchased, the candidate should spend some
time reviewing examination techniques, as well as algebra,
geometry and basic statistics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be improved...
I honestly found this book to not be very helpful.Instead of simply reviewing math and giving a lot of practice problems, Princeton Review wants you to learn new tips and tricks to get the right answer.(Which, in my opinion, is much harder than familiarizing yourself with concepts you already know.)The verbal review is decent, but the vocabulary list is terrible; they define words you may or may not know using lengthy definitions that include other words you may or may not know, instead of using simple language. After using this book to study for several weeks, my scores on the practice tests had not improved.(It is a very good thing I had to wind up rescheduling my test to a later date due to other reasons, because this was simply not effective preparation.)

I have the Kaplan Vocabulary Book and Barron's Passkey to the GRE as well.I am also going to purchase some materials to practice with, but would not choose Princeton Review again. For some people, this book might be a good way to go, especially if your math skills are not the best. For me, however, it was not worth the money or the time spent in attempting to study from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a good start!
If you don't know how to start to GRE, this is a good book. However, you should complement this book with a tougher one in order to score closer to 800. Barron's book was my complement.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even waste the time and money for it
I have bought this book and was horrible, this is the worst book of GRE that i have ever seen. I also have the Cracking GRE 2002 and there is no difference between 2002 and 2007 edition, even examples and sample math and verbal questions are the same.
I have taken online 4 full length tests and those tests were not the the real predictor of my actual score. So I recommend potential buyers to avoid this book from their mind.
Kaplan and Barron's are the best materials from which you can really benefit. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Barron's How to Studyfor the GRE" Review
Barron's "How to Prepare for the GRE: Graduate Record Examination" is an excellent study guide.Although my book was an older version than the latest edition, it still offers studies in the same areas as the newer books.Of course, math and logic simply do not change very often therefore making this book as good as the newest edition. It is well worth using as a supplement to other study guides as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fallacious Information; Hard to read; Questions in mock tests so MUCH harder than ETS' as to be useless as practise.
I have in my procession about 4 different GRE books that is current. The Barron one is the worst of them all. I choose here focus my critique on its quantitative part because I am doing well in this part, not thanks to Barron. Of utmost importance, there are some statement in their statements in mathematics, which is unforgivable.

Pros (general):
1. Contain the most mock test that has explanations to the correct choices
2. Has ONE math trick that no other books have--though it turns out less useful than I thought...

Cons (quantitative):
1. It's hard to read: sentences and vocabulary inconsistent with what is used in the GRE itself. It could just be me, since I was educated under the British educational system rather than the USA's, thus unfamiliar with the terminology commonly understood.

2. The quantitative questions are often vaguely stated, for example:

"In 1975 what percent of female college students were at least 25 years old" [ref: pg 328 under the "Data Interpretation Questions"]. This could be interpreted to mean (A) amongst the females, how many % are 25+? or; (B) amongst ALL students, how many are 25+ females? Barron was in fact asking for the former.

Many of their questions are like that. Be aware. ETS would NEVER do something like this, think now many hours of complaints would they have to deal with! No other books have this problem.

3. The mock quantitative tests' questions are too much harder than the ETS questions, thus rendering them useless as practise.

I understand the principle of training on harder questions than one would encounter just to be over-trained. However, Barron's questions so far exceeds the need of the GRE--unfortunately this is mainly due to its ambiguous language--as to make it irrelevant to the GRE.

4. Examples of false information

Page 335:
"Every integer has a finite set of factors (or divisors) and a infinite set of multiples."
EXCEPT FOR ZERO: 0 has an infinite number of factors, since anything multiply by 0 = 0, so EVERY number is a factor of 0.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide
I'm not good with standardized tests, but this guide helped me to see what areas I needed to improve and taught me how to study for a complicated test.

Admittedly, the book has a few glitches and can make a non-math person feel stupid at times, but the advice and strategies for the quantative part were logical and well explained.

The 3500 word list was essential for mastering the verbal, and the excercises helped me to see the answers the test makers have in mind.

The book gives excercises that are more difficult than those on the GRE website. If you can do the Barron's excercises and practice tests, you are ready for the test.

The additional CD also helped me to visualize the test and contained good practice excercises.

I am pleased with my results and would recommend the book to anyone seeking to prepare for the GRE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation for the GRE
This is definitely one of the best preparation guides I used for the GRE.The Math section was especially helpful to me.Instead of generic strategies, the book gives me many practicle math shortcuts which I found to be essential in tackling time constraint.

The book also provides a pretty comprehensive vocab list and numberous exercises for both verbal and math. The only downside of this book is the CD-a useless supplement to an otherwise fantastic review book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It forced me to study and I did well.
This study guide gave me a good overview of the types of questions I'd be facing from all the different sections of the GRE.The CD practice tests helped me prepare for a testing format I hadn't ever experienced before as well. And I don't know whether this was planned, but I did horribly on almost all of the practice tests I took.I even found myself getting low scores on the math sections and I'm an engineer.I even considered postponing the actual test. However, I ended up scoring higher than I'd ever anticipated on the actual test. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars instant success
all it took was a week and I was ready for the gre.I LOVE THIS BOOK!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wait for new edition of book coming up
Were this book up-to-date I would have rated it with 4 stars. However, this edition is pre-October 2002, i.e. refers to the old analytical section instead of the new analytic writing one (essay). I had bought it more than a year and only got the chance to go through it now, so I read only what refers to the other two sections (verbal, math).

This book is short-'n-sweet, but IMHO, in the math section, _too_ sweet. If you have a major in anything like math (as I happen to do), physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or even economics, the way it approaches the math section may seem childish to you (and maybe confuse you rather than illuminate you). I don't know how useful it may appear to (say) English or Psych majors with weak math backgrounds, but it wasn't helpful to me, others than the sample questions, and a couple of nice, time-saver tricks it mentions (3:4:5, 5:12:13 triangles, Bowtie, etc.)

The verbal section is the one I found more useful. For instance, it provides some useful techniques for attacking analogies. However, it is my strong belief that if you are weak in vocab all the nice tricks in the world can't help you much, especially with analogies and antonyms.

Overall, it is not a bad book for its price and its goal (crash course for people w/ only a week in their disposal). However, (1) if you have a strong math background, you may find the math section too condescending and (2) (and most importantly) wait for the new edition of this book, coming out September, that will be updated for the new analytical writing section.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but outdated
This book is incredibly useful in studying for the verbal and math sections of the GRE.However, the test has recently been changed, replacing the multiple-choice analytical section with a writing sample, and this book was published before the change.Almost half of the book is dedicated to solving the analytical questions which no longer are a part of the exam, and there is, of course, no information about the writing sample.

Even if you only have a few weeks to study, I would recommend getting one of the more comprehensive, more up-to-date books.I found the one published by ETS, the organization that creates the test, to be the most helpful, as it has sample essays to look at and questions to practice writing on.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best GRE books ever
When I started preparing for the GRE, I bought the ubiquitous Kaplan Guide and after I took the practice test I was incredibly dissapointed in my scores.Picking up this book, I read through the strategies for answering questions correctly, and then returned to Kaplan and went through every question in the book, answering them as recommended in the Crash Course book.I got INCREDIBLE results -- one of my scores jumped 300 points from the practice test to when I actually took the GRE.If you are the type of person who is bad at standardized tests, THIS BOOK is what you need.I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
this is an excellent addition for anyone with a gre date looming. it should in no way be the only book you get, but it does help. i bought it along with the "barron's" review book and they worked well togather. it is slightly annoying, having some random letter "v's" added to words in the verbal section, and a crazy explination for one of the equation problems. but it could have just been a misprint in my book.
still it was very helpful and a cofidence booster. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good tools
Definitely worth looking at! After receiving a low score, I also look at alternative books to the Kaplan. This book is clearly written and has easy to follow instruction (Whereas Kaplan may packs overwhelming notes into a single page). Some of its verbal strategies are not founded in Kaplan as well; that's what makes it worth reviewing. Although it lacks the opulence in vocabulary words, its strategies and examples are used in layman terms.

The question remains, is it worth buying? Why not, it gives me alternative methods to approach the GRE which Kaplan did not. If I get stuck on a question, it gives me hasty solution to eliminate apparent wrong answer and to guess more intelligently rather than to guess blindly when I confronted an alien vocabulary.

While this is a good book, I still utilize on Kaplan for its profusion on vocabulary skills and study methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent test prep
After taking the GRE and not being satisfied with my verbal score, I turned to this book.I used it everyday for about five weeks and improved my score the next time around.Pay specific attention to the vocab, it's the key to doing well on the GRE. ... Read more
