3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, but could use improvement
I used this book to study for about a month before I took the GRE. While the ideas and content of the book were good, I was very, very annoyed by the amount of typos. I could have forgiven this, but many of them where in the math section where the right number or symbol was important to know. Very, very, frustrating. Because I have only used Kaplan study materials, I'm not sure what else is out there, but it might be worth looking into. In general, I can't say I recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
This is a very good book for vocabulary. It has also a very good math section, much better than Princeton's Cracking. It goes deeper on the math, when people who are doing very well on the exam get tougher questions. In my opinion it could be more objective (as Cracking is), more concise, but it's a very good book too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great tool for GRE study!
This book has a lot of great resources and suggestions to improve your study techniques. If you give yourself enough time before the test it makes an incredible difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
This product arrived on time and perfect, it is very comprehensive and does cover everything from strategy to types of questions to practice questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaches you tricks!
I strongly encourage you to purchase this guide if you are studying for the GRE. This book walks you through each type of question and teaches you tghe tricks that the test may throw at you as well as some tricks of your own on how to answer questions with words you don't know or how to make a math problem easy/quick. It takes some time to get through the whole book, but I feel it is worth it! I feel like I know what I will be up against on test day and am prepared to take it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Important info for buyers of 2009 & 2010 Editions
Buyer beware: TPR does not support online review materials for 2009 and 2010 books. As soon as a new edition comes out the old codes for online products are cancelled. If you're buying this book to access online materials you MUST purchase the most recent edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average GRE book
This GRE book is about average. It doesn't do anything special. If you can find this cheap, get it.If not, buy something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
It's a very good book for people taking the GRE exam. It's very objective, its strategies are good. But on the math section, there is only basic stuff (Kaplan's book on this specific subject is better). For GRE word lists, it's ok, though one should look for other lists to have a better vocabulary knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practice Questions prepare you well for actual test
I read the Dummies book, but after taking practice tests (with the PowerPrep software from the ETS website), found myself not doing so well.I bought the Princeton Review book purely for its practice questions. The Princeton Review had great review questions in the back - extremely close to what the actual test is like.I did the practice questions in the back, and memorized the vocab, in 3 days, and made close to a perfect score. If you're one of those people who like to be over-prepared, GET THIS BOOK! The test will seem easy after you've studied with this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars a mixed bag, but worth having as part of your study collection
This book is definitely useful, but first you need to decide what score you actually want. The Hit Parade and tips for the essays are the strongest points of this book. The online CATs are also quite useful, but easier than the actual gre.BE WARNED THAT THE ETS SOFTWARE (COMES FROM GRE COMPANY) DOES NOT WORK ON MACS.This was an unpleasant surprise, so it was cool that you could do 5 online Cats through princeton review.Their math review is helpful, but if you want a score higher than 600 in math you'll need more. Some of the best advice in this book is how to manage your time per question, based on what score you want. If you want scores over 600, or over 500 in verbal you NEED to give yourself time to drill the vocab. If you can deal with mid range scores this book is adequate. If you are rusty on math, or want high scores, I would strongly recommend Barrons Essential Words for the GRE (plus learning all the hit parade from PR) and Clif's Math Review for Standarized Tests. Watch out for the new format questions in both sections, not all the prep books are up to speed on these. If you are a good writer, still review the Princeton essay section as their tips are very helpful for managing your time in this area. my prelim scores were 480 V, 420 M,final scores 630 V, 660 M. Good Luck!Remember to plan on 6 - 8 weeks to learn all that vocab and get through that Clif's math book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan Psych Rev
I haven't had a thorough look through this yet, but so far this book is amazing. It is extremely detailed in its information, which is great when learning new facts. I would highly recommend this book to study from... but I haven't yet taken the GRE, so I suppose take this with a grain of salt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan GRE Subject Test:Psychology
This was exactly what I hoped it would be when I ordered it.I need to take a practice psychology GRE exam & this book contains sample tests to take.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I bought this for my sister-in-law who, at the time, was a sophomore and who wanted a head start at studying for her GRE.She gave great compliments to the information included as it helped solidify her desire to study psychology. However, this should not be used as your only resource for studying for the GRE.As other reviewers have noted, the book does contain some typos and formatting errors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Start, but not Enough
This book is a good start for getting ready for the PSY GRE, but it's not enough. I used this book, the Princeton Review book, David Myer's Intro to Psy. book, as well as my other textbooks, and of course... the internet. The best way to use this book is to: a) read the chapters so you're familiar with the basic concepts, b) look up names and studies that you're unfamiliar with on the internet, c) make flashcards of concepts and psychologists you think are important.

The practice tests are not good predictors of the actual GRE, but are more of a studying tool. I scored in the low 700s on each of the practice tests, but scored an 830 on the actual test; so, my scores in the Kaplan practice exams were at least 1 SD away from my score in the actual exam. Still, it was useful in that it showed me what my weaknesses were.

Also, if you're hard up for cash, these books are usually at your local library, and they don't change much (if at all) from year to year.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was a very important part of my preparation
I am perfectly happy that I bought this book, because it did exactly what I had hoped it would do - help me score in the 99th percentile (830) on the psych GRE.But it is not enough by itself! If you rely on this book as your primary means of test preparation, you probably won't get a stellar score.

This book was only ONE PART of my overall preparation strategy.More important to my preparation was reading a Psych 101 textbook.Specifically, I bought a cheap used copy of Gleitman's introductory psych book (Psychology - 6th (Sixth) Edition) and read it section by section. When I completed a section of the textbook (e.g. Sensation and Perception), I would go the Kaplan book and read the corresponding chapter there. That way I covered the material twice. After reading both the textbook and the Kaplan chapter, I would then go to the website for the Gleitman textbook where you can find online quizzes and vocabulary reviews. After taking the quizzes online, I knew if there were any areas I didn't understand and/or needed to review further.Fortunately, there are lots of resources on the web for studying any areas you need to work on.

And of course I made flashcards of vocabulary, theories, and important psychologists. And I took practice tests. And I re-reviewed everything.A lot.Basically what I'm saying is that it takes a good amount of time and effort. The Kaplan review book isn't going to work miracles by itself.

While the Kaplan review book was helpful in my preparation, in my opinion it has two deficiencies.1.) The methodology and statistics section of the book is not thorough enough.Do what I did and go to internet to get bit more information on things like ANOVAs and factorial design. 2.) The practice tests are almost worthless. They are incredibly poorly written (as far as diagnostic tests go), and in no way do they approximate the real Psych GRE tests.I took the first one, but I didn't bother with the second.Do yourself a favor and find the real ones.

It has been 10 years since I graduated with my bachelor's in psych, so I had forgotten a fair amount of stuff.Despite that, using the Kaplan book as an important part of my preparation, I managed to score very well on the test.If you devote a few months to your preparation and take it seriously, you should be able to do the same.If you don't, I'm not sure how much this book is going to help you. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Contains errors
I took this book out of the library because I'm not very good at math... and yet I've found several errors in the math so far. Among others, a triangle's angles measure 90, 43 and "a" degrees respectively, and we are told that a=43.

The answer explanation of one question states that 1/105=1/7.

I have no idea how many errors of this type there may be because math isn't my strong suit.

There's a glitch on the CD in recording the practice test scores; it told me I got 730 on the verbal and it recorded the score on its chart as 710.

Also, the book tells us that we will have 45 minutes for the math section, and then later tells us we'll have 30 minutes. I think the latter time is correct.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great
This is a really great book to use. I recommend it to anyone that asks. It really breaks everything down and makes studying everything possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing...best all-purpose book
This book was extremely helpful in studying for my GRE exam. It was by far the best possible comprehensive study tool and covered every type of question found on the GRE in detail. I felt extremely confident after reading this book because it really does crack the exam and teach you how to beat the questions. You don't have to waste time learning math all over, just learn the simple strategies in this book, it's explained well and is presented in a way that's easy to replicate and understand. Even the vocabulary sections had some very useful tools for bettering your chances of guessing, explaining the system, essential words and strategies.. I did purchase Essential words for the GRE to get a longer list of words to study because this is my weak point, but if i had to choose between the two Cracking the GRE takes it HANDS DOWN!! This book is awesome, everyone taking the GRE exam should buy it! Don't think about it any more, buy it you will be as amazed as I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Transaction
I received this book in a timely manner and it was in the stated condition. Great transaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Princeton GRE Review

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure this book was ever proofread
I have only been through portions of this book so far, so I will let that qualify this critique. However, just in the parts I have been through, there are blatant errors.

In the Vocabulary List (Appendix B), several words that have multiple definitions are only given one. Moreover, the word 'monopolistic' is missing a definition altogether! There is an example sentence, but no definition preceding it. Other words have example sentences for which the word being defined is not used (in any of its forms).

In other sections of the book, there are misuses of the word 'affect' and 'effect.'

In the math section, there is a sample question that asks you to solve for 'p/q.' The explanation that follows solves for 'p.' In several other places, explanations of correct answers are difficult to follow. Generally, I am more adept at math than the average person, and I still struggled to follow these explanations.

I would not recommend purchasing this book. At most, check out the book from your public library.

5-0 out of 5 stars very useful
It is a good book for all students who need to develop GRE skills. It has many examples and excersises. And the explanations are very clear. I recomend it totally.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
I couldn't disagree more with the above reviewer. This book is awful. The author typically supplies rationales only for the "correct" answers. He never tells you why other answers (which may seem just as rational) are incorrect. Also, the explanations themselves are full of errors, like when the author writes that "lyrics, by definition, are the words to a song, but a poem is not a song." Guess he has never heard of lyric poetry. The book is full of some fairly maddening answer choices that demand deeper explanations that what the author provides (i.e., why the hell is "adhere" a better antonym for "rail" than "tout"?). Get Kaplan instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test prep made easy
This valuable resource gives clear explanations of the organization of the test and strategies for approaching it.It also provides many helpful reviews of specific question types and concepts. But most people will probably choose it because of the NINE COMPLETE PRACTICE TESTS it includes. What better way to test your preparedness?Study some of the concepts/strategies and review the book's explanations of the examples, then apply the knowledge on a practice test to see how well you're doing. Not quite there yet?Rinse, repeat.NINE times!A great tool to prepare you for the GRE. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not much to it
I am somewhat dissapointed in this book. It is a mere 50 pages, with huge font and tons of empty space. Granted it didn't cost a whole lot but still, I would have liked to have seen more substance. Most of the book is actually just word lists, with a page of writing with a bunch of new words thrown in. I recommend Vocabbusters GRE much more highly, it has several examples for each word as well as definitions, crossword puzzles, and multiple choice reviews. Much better bang for your buck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Response to BB09
BB09, I can see where you're coming from, but you're missing the point. The purpose of the "drama" in the book was meant for the sole purpose of helping you remember each word. Without it, there would be no way for you to be able to retain everything. And clearly the stories are difficult to read because they're so wordy! Which again, is the point of the book.

My last point is the fact that this book is meant for people needing to learn the most important info for the verbal section FAST. Unless you have a photographic memory, it would be difficult to memorize the entire dictionary a few months before the GRE. Best of luck though! ;)

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT the only vocab book you'll need...
This book is just ok - it covers the 300 most frequently tested GRE words, but that's all. I find the stories difficult to read. For the most part, they make me feel like I'm sitting in a high school drama class full of people who think they're funny. I also suspect it was printed in someone's dorm room. That said, I have learned a few words from just picking this book up every now and then. But for the score I'm aiming for, this book just doesn't cover enough info to really be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect companion to your GRE study materials
This book is short, sweet, and highly effective! I only had a week before taking the GRE's, so reviewing high-frequency words on the verbal section--fast-- was really crucial for me. I would definitely recommend this book without reserve! It really is the perfect companion to your GRE study materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conquering Vocab, most effective way to learn GRE vocab.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the money I spend
Used extensively. But it was damn cheap. Cd is good source. Bought for wife.she was not happy since it was looking old.

4-0 out of 5 stars GRE prep
I have no complaints about the book. I believe it may be helpful. However, I have a major complaint about the seller. One of the most important exercises in GRE preparation is the use of interactive tests. The enclosed CD was broken. When I emailed the seller about that, he claimed that he had already informed me, which I doubt, but since I do not recall. I will not elaborate on it. My issue is with his matter-of-fact reponse. If it were me, I would apologize and send the customer a new CD or a partial refund.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too many mistakes to use as a study guide
I noticed 3 mistakes within the first few pages of chapter one. If the author doesn't know an ester linkage should have a double bond to oxygen, doesn't know that the chemical formula for an unsaturated fatty acid is not the same as for a saturated fatty acid, and thinks that carbon can have 5 bonds, then I don't feel comfortable using this book as a study guide for more advanced topics. I wouldn't buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better than Princeton Review but still not enough
A bit better than the PR guide, at least the paper is of higher quality. More topics are covered in more details, but there are still things missing. And beware, some of the details in this book may not be correct. The best thing to prepare for your GRE biology is to use this book to determine what materials you need to know for the exam, and study the equivalent topics in your Campbell (or any intro. Biology textbook)

3-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy, but can be useful
I bought this book to study for the 2009 GRE, which I just took. The book is very light on detail, and very sloppy throughout -- you probably saw better diagrams and explanations on the home-made handouts you got from any of your professors. It certainly isn't up to the standard of a good textbook. All the way through, there are inaccuracies and errors.

However, it does provide a crude sort of overview of what topics are on the test. It's slightly more useful than the official list of topics from ETS, in that you think you might know about a particular topic, but when you read the review section you'll find that you've never heard of certain subtopics. My advice would be to skim it, reviewing the stuff you know, and noting which areas you need to learn more about.DON'T try to learn new material from this review guide.Instead, go pick up a GOOD college intro bio textbook, and learn as much as you can from that over a few weeks.Or if you're really ambitious, and have several months, go to the intermediate textbooks.

The single (!) practice test is also kind of infuriating -- full of sloppy questions and outright errors. And it doesn't give you any feedback about how well you do -- you might freak out after only scoring 75% on the practice test, but if you then take the official practice test from ETS, you'll find that a 75% actually translates to a damn good score -- somewhere around 90th percentile.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent but needs revision.
This book provides a decent look at most of the areas that are emphasized on the Biology Subject Test. However, I found inaccuracies in some very basic concepts, so double-check what it tells you with other sources. The book is also poorly written both in terms of grammar/syntax and explaining concepts clearly. Other reviewers recommend purchasing the Campbell Biology text instead of this guide, and that is a good idea if you can determine which concepts will be useful for the GRE and how many details you will be expected to know. Campbell is so detailed that it would be easy to become overwhelmed and to spend too much time studying unnecessary concepts or facts. I studied using both books and found that I could determine what was important with the Kaplan Guide and then learn those topics properly with Campbell.

5-0 out of 5 stars kc
It works as long as you have enough time to study don't think that the book alone will help. But it early enough to read and review to take practice tests. It is an excellent tudor. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Neither broad enough nor in depth enough
I used this book to study for the Psychology GRE, and I regret it. The material in the book only covered a small percentage of what appeared on my exam, and in some cases even the material that was covered in the book wasn't covered in enough depth to answer the exam questions. If I hadn't been a psychology major in college, I would have been completely lost if I had been relying on this book alone. The few exceptions were the chapters on clinical, abnormal, and social psychology, which provided a nice supplement to my undergrad curriculum and seemed to cover a substantial portion of the actual test material.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best use of your time
I started preparing for the test with this book, Cracking the GRE, and have since moved on to the Kaplan book. I wish I'd started with the Kaplan. Cracking the GRE reads like a grocery list, whereas the Kaplan book reads like a textbook. If you prefer strict word-pair memorization as a method of study, Cracking the GRE is fine. But if you're like me, and find it easier to remember a term if you feel you understand the term's full meaning, go with the Kaplan book. It just has way more information, which really helps me remember things.

Don't get me wrong, this book will probably help you score more points on the test, but I feel the Kaplan book helped me much more. Plus, it was a better read, and I may have actually learned something about Psychology in the process.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been called - A Glossary of Terms for the GRE Psych
This is not a study book but a long list of terms and subjects. It is only good as a first preliminary review before the real study. Get Kaplan it is so much better. Kaplan GRE Exam Subject Test: Psychology 2009-2010 Edition (Kaplan Gre Psychology)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great review text, but don't use this book alone!
I took the April 2008 Psych GRE and scored a 750.I studied psychology as an undergraduate but have been out of school for 6 years.I studied intensively for probably 2 weeks prior to the exam.I used the Kaplan book, the Princeton Review book and also a general psychology text (which if you buy a recently revised edition, you can find for under [...]on amazon or[...].

The Princeton Review book was well organized and its outline/list format made it easy to follow. The book covered a greater array of topics than the Kaplan book, but in MUCH less detail. In fact, I often noted topics that were so glossed-over and summarized that they might actually misrepresent the term/concept to the reader unless he/she had a prior knowledge of the subject or did some additional studying.

The Kaplan book covered fewer topics but provided *slightly* more detail in its explanation. I found the content in the Kaplan book to align better with the content presented in the general psych text that I used (Gleitman's "Psychology"). Although it covers fewer specifics, it provides a much better review of main concepts.

In the end, I used both texts to make my own study guide by working through them both, section by section, and creating a combined list of terms/concepts I needed to study.I did most of my actual studying using the general psychology book.

I would highly recommend using these two books to inform your study plan but do not rely on them to provide a complete review.I found the general psychology text to be far more useful than either of these texts.Let the review books guide your review by filtering the huge amount of information in the general psych book.

If you are very familiar with the material and just need a quick review, I would buy the Princeton Review book, as it presents more material overall.

If you are somewhat familiar with the material but need some serious review, I would at least buy the Kaplan book, as it provides better explanation of major concepts.

If you have the time, buy them both and invest in a general psych text.

Neither text can completely prepare you for the test. There were quite a few questions on the test that were not covered by either of the books and quite a bit of material that was heavily covered by both texts that did not appear on the test.I'm sure ETS studies these books too.Best of luck!

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point
This book is an excellent place to begin you studies for the GRE Psychology exam. I thought it was concise and straightforward. Used in addition to the other preparatory books out there, I managed to pass having only had one introductory psychology class.

I do think it needs to be updated to reflect the content of more recent exams, and I wish it included more than one practice exam. I do not think this book alone is enough to score really high. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I bought this book hoping that it would provide a comprehensive review for the GRE. It has been an extremely disappointing experience. Although the book does provide examples and tips, as well as a list of vocabulary and roots to know, it falters on its explanations significantly. I must also echo a previous review about the typos: there are several, and some of them include the answers. On certain example problems, including both Verbal and Math, the book won't even give you the answer to the question, leaving you wondering if you got it right. The practice test in the back is horrible because it uses several of the same questions, so it doesn't really give you more opportunity for practice. I'm thankful that I purchased other books to help prepare, because this one is certainly sub par.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money. Buy other practice materials.
I found the verbal section of this book somewhat helpful, and did increase my grade for the section a few points.

But the math section of this book is horrible. A lot of the pages have typos, formulas are given incorrectly and the solution isn't explained for many of the harder questions; they are quickly brushed over so unless you knew how to do them before the book, it is helpless. It's like they wrote the math section in 30 mins under a deadline.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and of limited use
Although the book can serve as a source of additional practice tests, its usefulness is highly questionable. The author is a former Princeton Review instructor who has failed to even keep himself updated. For example, the author advises the reader (test taker) to look at the questions before reading the text. Even worse, he suggests that "general" questions should be answered later, as if this was an option. Additionally, the concept of "Tom" is just the "Joe Bloggs" of the Princeton Review. Based on my experience, this concept is of little use for anyone other than the bottom 30 percentile. Additionally, the Vocabulary section is highly limited. On the plus side, the Math review despite its errors has a clearer layout.

Overall, in terms of strategy, clarity, and the number of practice questions, Barron's, Kaplan's, and Princeton Review's guides all surpass the Acing the GRE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some parts are great, LOTS of typos in math section
Written by a test writer, it certainly -feels- like you're getting insider tips. I haven't taken the GRE yet, so I can't say whether it's truly useful. The text is easy and fun to read, and the chapters are organized well. The content is straightforward to work through and the tips and strategies are highlighted well.

The thing I don't like, and it's a big thing, is the quantity of typos in the math section. There are mistakes in the formulas (yikes!) and in the answers and explanations. For example, page 200 lists the surface area of a cube as 486 for a side length of 8 AND for a cube with a side length of 9. Page 202 gives information about a triangle: lengths of two sides and one angle. The problem asks you to estimate the length of the third side. Yes, it's an estimation, but the answer is nothing near the two lengths the third side could be, when calculated. (There are two possibilities given the setup -- one where the sides are more equal, and one where the third side is very short, but the answer tells you to pick something in the middle. Drawing it out by hand and modeling it with mathematical software give the same results -- and neither are what the book says is the answer.) On page 219, there's a function with an equal sign in the numerator:

f(x)=1
--------
1-x^2

On page 220, the formula for finding the midpoint between two points is listed as

(x1 - x2)/2, (y1 - y2)/2

but the minus signs should really be plus signs. I consider that a serious error, since someone who doesn't know the formula will be misled.

This review is of a 2007 edition.

If they revise, much more attention needs to be paid to the math proofreading, and at a minimum they should fix the few problems mentioned above.(And will they send me an honorarium for catching these mistakes? :-) )

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
This is a terrible book: don't waste your money. As an example, here is one sample question from the numeric entry section, where the answer is COMPLETELY WRONG.
The question:
"If -7 <= x <= 5 and -3 <= y <= 4, what is the greatest possible value of (y - x)(x + y)?"

Their idiotic answer, quoted exactly:
"The correct answer is 99. Because you are looking for the greatest value of (y-x)(x+y), your goal is to make x + y as big as possible and y - x as big as possible. Therefore, use x=5 and y=4 to get x + y = 9, and x = -7 and y = 4 to get y - x = 11. The greatest value of (y - x)(x + y) is (9)(11) = 99."

Even a 12-year-old would know that is incorrect. Buy the Princeton Review or Kaplan. Don't waste your money or your time on this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrendous Book
This book is terrible.

As many other reviewers have pointed out - the questions are much easier than you'd see on the normal test.

Further, I've run into a few solutions on quant problems that are just objectively WRONG.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you do worse
This book was of no help at all.The score I got on the GRE, which was average, had NOTHING to do with this book and EVERYTHING to do with this book.I say it had NOTHING to do with this book because it is the score I probably would have got had I not used this book at all.The examples and tests in this book were way too easy.On the practice tests, I was scoring in the 700 range. When I took the actual test, it only took me a few questions to realize the real test was much harder than this book.I say this book had EVERYTHING to do with my only average score because the easy practice tests lured me into a false sense of security.Had I known the actual test was much harder, I would have studied more and done better. So in that sense, I did worse because of this book.

Besides not being sufficiently difficult, the book also has poor explanations of its easy examples. Here is a typical example of an antonym question from one of the practice tests:

PRAGMATIC:
(A) ample
(B) sensible
(C) impractical
(D) astute
(E) exiguous

Here is the explanation:

"The best answer is C. The word pragmatic means 'practical,' whereas the word impractical means 'not capable of being put to use.' Therefore, impractical is most nearly opposite in meaning to pragmatic."

First of all, that question is much easier than most questions on the GRE.Second, the explanation doesn't explain any of the wrong answers.Third, it goes on to give a cryptic explanation of the easy word "impractical" just in case "impractical" wasn't an obvious antonym for "practical."This is typical of the book.

Another flaw is it only gives 30 minutes for the math section while you get 45 minutes on the actual exam. The fact that the writer didn't know such an important component of the exam raises questions on his qualifications to write such a book.Furthermore, I was able to complete the easy practice tests with five minutes to spare on each section, while on the actual test, I was finishing just in time.

The about the author section says, "Steve scored in the 99th percentile on every standardized test he has ever taken."Was the GRE was one of those tests?Following his own advice, I doubt he would get over 500 on each section.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great way to prepare
Just thought I'd echo the comments of some of the other reviewers--far too easy compared to the actual test and inexplicably has math section at 30 minutes instead of 45.

1-0 out of 5 stars good outline, but minimally useful and only as a supplement
This book is primarily useful for giving a study outline, but the same can be achieved by reading an intro psych textbook. It lists terms and key figures with which/whom you should be familiar, but it doesn't give information about most of them.If you have forgotten these names since you took the pertinent course, you're out of luck. However, it frequently reiterates that you should be reviewing alongside a "good" intro psych book.If you do, in fact, have a good intro book, you actually don't need the Barron's book. You already have all the information the review book provides, plus the important details that the review book lacks.

For testing information, the introduction is confusing and somewhat misleading. For example, you are encouraged to answer as many questions as possible, even if guessing is required (as is necessary on the computer-based general GRE exam, which you have probably already taken and have come to expect). However, credit is taken off for wrong answers and not for blank responses. This appears to be a conflicting strategy.

In short, I would recommend just having a good intro psych book and skipping this altogether (Gazzaniga & Heatherton's "Psychological Science" is very comprehensive and probably suffices on its own as review). If you want a practice exam to follow your progress, go ahead and sign up with ETS and they will mail you a practice test (or find one online).Save your $$ and your time.

2-0 out of 5 stars OOPS! Revision Needed
I just started using this book and wanted to point out a major error in the Diagnostic Test Score Evaluation.

On the Tally Chart, the subscore classifications for each questions are completely wrong. Each Diagnostic Test is grouped by subject, but these Tally Charts make the subjects appear randomly distributed across questions. This will lead to incorrect Evaluation of your Score and subscores. (Which was the whole point I bought this particular book - to evaluate my strong/weak areas for more focused studying)

OOPS!

There are probably more errors judging by other reviews, but this error affects the major efficacy of this particular tool, which is the unique appeal of the book.

I will give a more elaborate review once I complete the book/GRE test.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for practice, bad for everything else
I really wanted to like this book, given the usefulness of Barron's General GRE book. However, this book fell far short of my expectations. For every section it says, "Be sure to have your intro books handy for review." I don't see the point in buying a book that tells me to read other books. On the other hand, the practice tests are useful if you have the time to run through all of them. My suggestion is to make this book the last one on your list of study aids.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-rounded study guide
I am applying for clinical psychology doctoral programs and bought this book based on the reviews I read about it on Amazon to prepare for the GRE Psych exam.I did not major in psychology and was 1.5 years out of college when I started using the guide (just to give you some context of my starting place).

I found the book to be very helpful and well organized.I appreciated that there were two diagnotic exams to take along the study path to gauge your strengths and weaknesses. There is a fairly in-depth review in the book for quick reference on names, dates, research studies, and theories that proved to be very useful during my study. However, I noticed that a few questions were repeated in the exams offered in the book.

I would not recommend that one use only the study summary in this book for the sole means of preparation for the exam. The exam is so densely content-based that it would not be a good idea. Before I started using this study book, I reread an introductory psych textbook to refamiliarize myself with the concepts.

Those two methods helped prepare me well.I have yet to see my scores.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worse book in the GRE psychology review compared to others
Barrons should only be used if you have already studied material from Kaplans and the Princeton Review guide. I bought as many GRe psychology guides as I could to make sure I studied everything, Barron sonly helped to verify I knew everything and maybe gave me some more topics to study, but I would not recommend this guide. Use it only if you have used all of the other books and want to make sure you study as much as you can to be really well prepared for the test. Good luck! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Last minute miracle
I purchased this book only about a month and a half before I was scheduled to take the GRE because the prep course that I took did not go into as much detail as I would have liked about the writing section. They told me how it was graded and what makes a strong essay versus a weak one, but this book made it practical. I appreciated the dissection of the issue essay and the arguments essay. I needed a structure to input my thoughts quickly and that is what I got with this book. I got stuck on starting and ending that I wasted precious time. When the day of the test came I had more time left over to proof-read and revise my essays, and I was satisfied with my score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as great as other reviewers claim
This book is useful for understanding what the GRE is asking for and providing clues on rhetorical devices to use. However, I can't verify that what it tells you is correct, since I only received a 4.0 score. Additionally, the book is a little out of date but this only really effects the description of the test rather than its advice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny
This book was an indispensable resource in writing the GRE analytical writing section. What helped me most were the clear and concise descriptions outlining proper essay structure, along with actual example essays implementing these concepts. For my undergrad degree, I never got above a C in any English class. I studied this book for about 10 hours, and scored a 4.5 in the section.

You won't be disappointed.- Engineer

5-0 out of 5 stars My argument essay was in this book verbatim
I bought this book about a month before my test. I only used it like 4 days before my test. The night before I knew there wasn't much I could do so I just read as many of the essays as I could so I could get in my head how to "run" with issues and make some arguments. So the next morning I'm taking my test and one of the argument essays was MY argument essay word for word. I was so excited! Of course I didn't remember the essay word for word but I remembered the arguments and had ample time to add my own. The book was definitely worth the money :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as good, some helpful tips though
While it provides some useful tips for better essays for GRE, some sample essays are logically flawed. (yes, I was surprised to find that out while the author claimed he wrote the essays "not" within time frame). For example. Page 68. Sample Response for issue 1. Moreover, ETS has edited their pools of topic and the topic won't allign with the sample responses in the book. The book's claimed up to date web-page is not up to date either. May be because it has been 6 years from the date of publication.

So I would suggest you to study official PowerPrep from ETS first. It really helps. After all, they are the one who's gonna test you. So you gotta play their game to score.

Then, if you still have time and some bucks (around $ 15.00) buy this book and read. Good luck with your GRE or GMAT. Cheers :) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Questions out-dated
I purchased this book two years ago to study for my GRE test. It is only good if you already know the material very well and only use it for a review. It is a poor representation of what the actual GRE exam is.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
This book is exactly what it is marketed to be. It has 5 former chemistry exams, all of which have answers and accompanying explanations.
The nice thing about the exams are that they make you think critically about the material that you will be tested on. Also, taking the tests within the time limit forces you to work faster.
The problem: none of the exams are newer than 1988. While the materials tested are similar, the format of the tests are different from the recent exams. Just a few points: the exam is still 170 mins., but only 130-135 questions. Unlike those in the book, the newer exam does not require much calculation. Most importantly, the type of question asked has changed.
To use this book best, I would recommend studying the subject material first and then taking these practice tests to apply what you studied and identify any holes in your knowledge. Afterward, check out the ETS site for a current, free practice exam (without explanations) to get an idea of what you will actually be tested on.

Good luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for questions, little else
Why can't someone make a good chemistry GRE review book? This one is rife with errors, obsolete questions, and has the test format wrong (too many questions per a given period of time). The answers are helpful, but for many I ended up having to look them up anyway. And when I say errors, I mean many errors which will have you scratching your head to answer a question only to realize the right answer does not exist, as it is obscured by a typo. Occasionally their answers are scientifically incorrect as well.

That said, this book has some value, but mostly if you've already reviewed the material and are simply looking to practice.

All and all, it might be worth the money to have some extra practice problems. But this book is good for little else. You'll need textbooks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please don't buy this--save yourself the time
This book was terrible. Its cover promises that it gives "detailed answers to all the questions," but that's not even close to true. The answers are usually extremely short on fact, and the practice questions aren't even close to what the ETS's released sample asks (my favorite example from this book: "What is brass?").The formatting often makes it impossible to determine what they are asking. This is by far the single worst test prep. book I have EVER seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped raise my score!
I am pretty happy with this aid except for the format of not being a real "flashcard". I ended up tearing up all the pages, and cutting in half, so I can get rid of the words I knew already, and I can change the order of the words (Who likes to study words in alphabetical order?).

If you're willing to do this labor and transform the book into real flashcards, I believe this is a good product. Anyway, it's cheaper than buying a set of flashcards, and much faster than making your own cards.

What's also good is that it is not too overwhelming like other word books. I only had a month to study the vocabulary, so I studied 20-30 words a day (of course starting with different alphabets!). Without these flashcards, I don't think I could have done that. I encountered many words on the practice tests and on actual test. My verbal score went up by 200, from upper 300 to upper 500, or 20 some percentile to 80 some percentile. If you're suffering at 300-400 score range, maybe you should give it a try.

One pitfall - it is not comprehensive, and needs to be complemented with other aids. I studied a list of difficult SAT words, because I found these SAT words were not included in the GRE lists...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to improve vocab score if you haven't much time
The idea of a flash card-type book is simple, but I just loved the idea of folding over the pages that I had already mastered. Seeing the progress I made with all the folded-over pages really gave me the motivation to keep studying. I know it sounds stupid, but considering how much I was dreading having to memorize words, it really worked! By the night before the exam, I had all the pages folded over.

Obviously, this isn't a comprehensive list of GRE words, but it's a great list to cram if you just have a week or two to study. I'd supplement this book with the list of 3,500 words from the Barron's study guide if you had more time. I even made my own flip-books from this list, and learned about 500 more words. Thanks Kaplan for a great idea!

4-0 out of 5 stars helped to bring up my score
This little book really helped to bring my score up.I wish that these were truely flash cards it would have helped to ensure I knew the words and just not the words around it.If you have more than a month to prepare for the test get this book!!!It will really help to brush up on your vocab

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad start for GRE studying *edit - but not the best*
Not totally through this book in its entirety yet but I thought I would weigh in so I could take a break from studying =)

PROS
- a lot of useful strategies were provided for tackling the different types of questions
- math review had a lot of good examples, not just presenting the rules and theories
- practice tests are all suitably challenging
- there's a lot of practice tests for a strategy book (the main reason I bought it)
- I liked the tips on how to build your vocabulary near the end
- in general good clear explanations for the questions posed

CONS
- sloppy editing - there are minor errors sprinkled throughout. A couple have already been mentioned, I think I found one or two in the practice tests as well. Bottom line, nothing that will completely mess you up because you'll see them if you're alert and they really are minor. The highlighted sections in reading comprehension have indeed been blacked out instead of highlighted, but most of the time you are able to read the blacked out section in the questions below. It's a shame this book did not go through more rigorous editing.
- in the math section, I found it lacking in covering the concepts of factorials and tougher probability questions, but it was spot on with everything else. minor point - is it me or was anyone else disappointed it didn't list the quadratic equation in which you solve for x using terms -b, b^2, 4ac and 2a ?? I wish they had mentioned why they omitted it.
- the word list at the end is shorter than other word lists. To score high on verbal, I think you need more words that what they've got here. They also excluded a bunch of words from their word list that appeared as examples in the text.

Overall it's a good starter book.I am glad I began with this one. I think after reading this, if you really understand all the math concepts, memorize all the equations, and practice them, you should score well in that section. As for the verbal, you will probably only obtain an average score using this book because you need to memorize a lot more words than what they provide. To be fair, they do mention this as a caveat in the verbal strategy section and make recommendations on how to go about building your vocab, but I would have paid an extra $10 to see a big 50 page word list that grouped key GRE words in terms of their meanings (as they suggest you learn them).

***EDIT - I've just finished going through Barron's 17th Ed. GRE book and I have to say that Peterson's book is inferior. For one thing, this Peterson's just does not contain enough practice. It has 9 practice tests, yes, BUT Barrons includes ample sets of practice problems at the end of each concept taught in addition to the practice tests. I think this boosts your morale when studying because you don't get to the practice tests until you have really studied the concepts. That way you don't end up with abysmal scores for the first two weeks of studying. ALSO, seeing that Barron's includes a full vocab list that is at least triple the size of Peterson's, highlighting the two or three hundred buzzwords PLUS it sections the word list into more digestible pieces with practice problems...it makes Peterson's verbal look like a very weak effort indeed. In order to master the verbal you absolutely need to increase your vocab. Peterson's does not help you do that, it just says "good luck, here are some strategies to learn some words, now you are on your own"... now that I have gone through 6 of Peterson's practice tests, I can see how some reviewers said some of the verbal questions were not clear cut. I think I agree with this now, because some of the questions didn't seem fair. It seemed like the writer wanted to 'trick' you, which is fine if the explanation afterwards makes complete sense. There were only a handful of questions like that, but then there were also a handful of mistakes in the editing, a handful of blackouts instead of highlights, a handful of concepts missed here and there...I just feel this publication was a careless effort. This book is good for practice, but I would not recommend it as your first stop.****

1-0 out of 5 stars errors errors errors in the math review
I'm only halfway through the algebra review section, and I've already spotted FIVE major errors. For example, on page 227 they provide a practice problem (if x=-2, then x^5 - x^2 - x = ?). Directly underneath they state that the correct answer is 34. They go on to prove in explicit detail that the answer is NEGATIVE 34. This is a minor example, but it happens over and over again. For students who struggle with math these errors could be devastating. They are unnecessary and sloppy.

I'm giving one more example because I can't stand it. On pg 239 the question clearly asks for the value of p/q. The answer provided by Peterson's corresponds to the value of p. Again, minor, but crazy confusing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Redacted Text
Mine has the redacted text described in another review. Otherwise, I like it. It definitely has some more challenging questions than the Kaplan book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A step up in GRE books!
This book is covering a lot more then Princeton review.
The math section is great and it does not miss a single concept used in the GRE exam.
Very good for people with good math understanding. Princeton review is overrated and it seems to give a feeling that the GRE is not that hard, the problem with that is that they don't push hard enough and not challenging with enough questions (only 3 exams 1 easy, 1 medium and 1 hard).

3-0 out of 5 stars Glaring Errors with My Copy
The book is very thorough and comprehensive, and makes sure to keep the prospective test taker aware of all the recent changes in the GRE.The CD contains no practice tests, if I am not mistaken.Instead it gives you an access code to their website. This makes the CD difficult to share with others, resell, or to be used as a library copy.I gave it three stars mainly because of a glaring and highly annoying printing issue. As I understand, in the new GRE verbal section, the text that is referenced by the test questions is highlighted, instead of referenced by line numbers. This book tries to recreate that, but is unsuccessful.Instead of highlighting the text, it blacks it out completely, and you are left trying to select the answer with the pertinent text obscured rather than highlighted.I'm surprised that other reviewers didn't pick up on this. 5-0 out of 5 stars Really good
I have never bought such a good book. If you are preparing for the GRE. This is the perfect book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the sample essays alone
I took the GRE 10 years ago to get into an MA program, when I needed to retake them to get into a doctoral program, I panicked! A new writing section, ah!However, this book put my anxieties at ease.It is short and to the point.I did not really need it to brush up on punctuation or grammar - but all that information is there. What I really found most helpful were all the examples of sample essays. To receive a high score on the GRE writing section, you need to structure your essays a certain way - this book shows you how to do that.Writing section topics for your specific test will be picked from a pool of topics - this book covers all the major ones with its sample essays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Logical Writing
For writing the logical and issue section, it is incomparable. I read it very fast and looked at the examples again and again. That's why it is excellent because it's fast and shows exactly how. You just have to read it and then think about the examples. It helped me so much. ETS doesn't want a dissertation, just to see our demonstration of ability and this book taught me how while keeping it very simple and compact.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Patterns and Logical Approaches
I loved it! This was short. Very accurate. Doesnt waste a minute of my valuable time in pedantic hogwash. Actually Im busy and took the advice of other readers who said they were busy and needed a crash course in the logical section for writing. THis works. It just took a quick read and then I was able to refer to it as a reminder.
I got an excellent score on the writing parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIGHLY Recommended
My friend took the GRE and got this a while back. He said (and it's why I listened), if I needed to learn specific writing approaches and would read for patterns and logic, it'd be super clear. And it was.

All I know is this- I am glad I spent the time and the money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for general review, not for scoring extremely high...
I feel that Princeton Review books are best for people that want a simple and easy to understand review of the most important concepts and strategies useful for the GRE.

The math review is easy to understand. The strategies for the verbal section are clear.

The Princeton Review books ARE NOT enough for high scorers. The math problems are far too easy for someone that wants to get an 800 in math.

For instance, I scored 800 on the Princeton Review CD tests with tons of extra time left and while I was watching TV, playing with the dog and using half a sheet of scratch paper.I'm not THAT talented in math.

Kaplan's, Barron's and other books have much more challenging CAT software. They are better for high scorers.

So use Princeton if you want a painless review and need to score between 600 and at most the low 700s in math. The verbal section is better, but if you want to score over 700 in verbal you need more practice material. Kaplan's verbal tests are relatively challenging, in my opinion. This is especially true when it comes to reading comprehension passages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid -- especially helpful for the writing section
This is a pretty solid all-around GRE prep.Especially helpful, though, is the part about creating templates to deal with the analytical writing session. This advice in itself makes the book worthwhile.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for review, but tests on CD repeat a lot of questions
the math review in PR was, i thought, the best amongst the main players (barron's, kaplan) - though i am very good at math, so i didn't need a lot of explanations regarding some of the shortcuts, etc., they have in this book. verbal was pretty solid in terms of instruction as well. you want to supplement the vocab here w/ kaplan's word list and barron's top 300 words. vocab is key to the verbal part of the exam, but you don't need to go overboard and learn 3,500 words (in barron's) unless you have time to prep that much...it's overkill. 600-800 is about right, which is what you'll get if you combine all sources. the one major negative - PR's tests are really easy. well, moreso because they repeat a lot of questions from the book. not to say the real exam is much harder than PR's, but it would probably be a good idea to try a few different books for more realistic tests (kaplan and barron's are pretty good). again, it's not so much that the questions here are very easy, it's that a lot of them are repeats.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, But Not the Best
This GRE prep book has a fairly decent Math review and Verbal review, but the practice tests both in the book and on the CD aren't very difficult compared to the actual GRE.It has some good points on how to write the Issue and Argument essays, but the Baron's prep book is much better in all areas. It's good to use this book along with other guides like the Baron's simply because they have a few different points, and getting all the practice possible is what will ultimately help you in the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR STUDY TIME
Please do yourself a favor and buy the Kaplan review book, as well as the book ETS publishes. This book has AWFUL advice and wildly unrealistic practice tests. The tests on the CD rom often repeat questions already answered in the book and have produced a range of scores which in no way reflect my scores on the tests ETS provides in their book (which are the real deal). The only saving grace of the Princeton Review book is the fact that they provide 4 or 8-week study schedules combining work from this book and the ETS book.My advice -- just make your own schedule and try to stick to it. ... The GRE is changing in August 2011!

What can you expect from the GRE revised General Test? Should you take the test now or wait? These questions and more are answered in this introduction to the new exam.

In the most sweeping changes to the test in its history, every aspect of the GRE General Test will change in 2011:

Longer test: With more sections and questions focused on reasoning and critical thinking, the test will now be longer than the current GRE.

New scoring rubric: With a 130–170 score scale in 1-point increments (vs. 200–800 in 10-point increments on the current GRE), it will be more challenging to differentiate your score from the competition.

New test experience: The Multi-Stage Test format, a new form of computer-based functionality, will allow users to move back and forth within a specific subject.

New and different question types: Every section will have new question types. In: More reading comprehension and data analysis questions; Out: Antonyms and analogies.
