3-0 out of 5 stars It's a nice complement but not enough by itself
This book provides a good set of practice questions, ordered by difficulty level. This is a nice feature to reinforce weak areas, but is not enough to be your main source aid to prepare for the GMAT. The test taking techniques are good, but not for everyone. For instance, I couldn't get used to applying most of them, but they must be useful for some people.

Also, the online material (2 CAT'S) didn't really convince me because they had a flaw in the timing, and the feedback isn't as thorough as Kaplan's CAT's.

On the upside, I found the Math review to be quite on target and should be easy to grasp for people with non quantitative backgrounds.

Overall, the the Princeton Review is good to have as secondary reference and for consult when another view is needed, but it shouldn't be your only source. I'd recommend to get this book with the Official GMAT Review by GMAC.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 books is all you need: Princeton Review and The Official Guide
You DO NOT need the version with the DVD. Save the money and either use it for lunch or buy a set of practice tests from the mba.com website. At least they are official.

Now on to the review...

I've tried The Official Guide, Arco, Kaplan and Princeton Review books. After taking the test the first time using only the Kaplan and Arco guides I was not happy with my score, nor the review material in either book. I then purchased and used the Princeton Guide and the Official Guide (big orange one). An important point concerning me was that it helped raise my score by 90 points to where I needed it to be. More importantly, for this review, is to let you know that the tips, practice tests, questions and hints on how to prepare and take the exam were top notch in the Princeton Guide. Using the Princeton Guide as your strategy and the Official Guide for the practice questions is the best way to raise your score. The diagnostic test in the Official Guide helps and the warm up tests in the Princeton Review both help give you a feel for what type of questions you'll need to practice most. Use the 2 online practice tests from Princeton Review after you buy the book also since the Official Guide only comes with questions in the book, no CAT.
My advice:
1) Read the information about the test and thoroughly understand the time limits per question to finish on time
2) Take the warm up test and the diagnostic test to determine your strong and weak points
3) Go through the Princeton Review, every section to learn strategies
4) Go through the Official Guide and answer the first 20, middle 20 and last 20 of each section to get a feel for what level of difficulty you are consistently scoring well at
5) Then take a practice exam and time it
6) Go back and answer the next 20/20/20 from the Official Guide
7) Then take the other practice exam
8) Then just finish as many questions in the Official Guide as you have time for

I would recommend at least 1 month preparation and if you don't score as good the first time, take it the very next month after studying the addional weeks.

The best things are having a very good feel for timing (practice timed tests) and do as many practice problems from the Official Guide as you can. Finish the book if possible. I did about 75% of all the questions in each section. I answered like 30 questions almost each night for a month until I was sick of GMAT type questions but well aware and familiar with all the questions types.

So 2 books: Official Guide and Princeton Review and you are off to the score you'll need. Practice and endurance. And drink a red bull 30 min before the test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tips
This book has some great tips on how to answer questions.Thought the strategies were stronger in math than verbal.Hints for AWA were great, like make the essay as long as possible. You definitely need to suppliment with the official book and a computer practice test, but this book will give you some great strategies - I got a 780 and 6.0 on AWA!

4-0 out of 5 stars good info
This book was a great place to start. Is eases you into prepping for the GMAT. The math review was great. And I liked the strategy for the essays. It also has a good amount of practice questions. Most of the questions are pretty hard, even the "Bin 1" questions. I scored a 600 with the aid of this book and the big orange GMAT book

5-0 out of 5 stars I Owe The Bulk of My Score to This Guide
The state B-school I was looking into last year required a 400 score on the GMAT, but when I started taking practice exams online, I realized I wasn't quite ready to take the test. My scores were in the 400 range, but I was afraid that I would choke on the actual test. That's when I started looking for a good test prep guide.

I chose The Princeton Review based mainly on online reviews like this. It didn't hurt that this guid was one of the cheapest I found either. Though it didn't come with a CD or DVD-ROM, I found that the material covered in the book was more than adequate. In fact, this guide was the only book I purchased.

I spent weeks reading and re-reading the study sections, and I found that the practice questions in the back of the book were very representative of what I saw on the actual test (I worked every one in the week leading up to my appointment). I took the official GMAT practice test using the program downloaded from the mba.com website and was scored at 620. But when I actually went to take the test, I came out with a 710. I actually did go against the advice in the book and spent way too much time on one of the math problems, which put me in a lurch. If I'd listened to the advice to guess and move on instead of wasting time trying to figure one problem out, I may have raised my score even more.

Thanks to this study guide, I now have options I never dreamed of before. Second tier schools that seemed like a pipe-dream are sending me letters of recruitment

If you're looking into B-school, do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's the best investment you'll make going into the GMAT. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Mistake
I bought this book hoping it would help me for the LSAT, but I was disappointed. It is a little simplistic (although this could help a person get used to the games), but it's biggest flaw is the mistakes in the text. Throughout the exercises, there are msitakes. This drove me crazy when I was trying to solve the sample problems becasue I could never be sure if I just wasn't getting it, or if there was another mistake in the book.

2-0 out of 5 stars you are better off with out this for the LSAT
I don't know about the other tests but this book is useless for the LSAT.It is too easy and has too many mistakes!Simple things like replacing "could"with "must"in the answers mess up the whole outcome and this book makes those simple mistakes.I also understand the concept of choosing the lesser of the evils but this book takes it to the extreme!Answers for inference questions are things that really can't be implied any more than what they consider "wrong".The LSAT doesn't do that.So far i suggest getting the actual past tests and there are plenty of other prep book out there.I suppose you could use this book to boost you confidence, so i will give it stars for that.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst logic prep book I ever had...
People should really avoid this book unless you have too much money, time and effort to waste.Aside from this book only provides limited strategies on cracking the logic questions, it has way way way too many bloodly obvious mistakes in it answer keys.It only does two things:confuses you--because you will never understand the inference process since the answers are wrong; or frustrates you--one MORE mistake is found!I eventually got so frustrated that I had to abandon using this book after getting through about 1/5 of the book.Strongly recommend avoiding using this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Errors in Answer Key ...
I would avoid this book simply because the answer keys have too many errors, thus making it difficult to gauge your success on the test questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible and error-filled
I looked at this book while preparing for the LSAT.

It deals only with very easy questions and even includes errors in the answer key and explanations. The logical reasoning section is quite horrendous, only introuding questions of mild complexity.

I would look elsewhere for a preparation book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EZ books
In order to get a real GMAT prep - I would recommend you use the EZ Solutions series of 10 books, or whichever book(s) you think you need most help with. These books are very detailed oriented and cover everything on the GMAT math. First use the review modules to get the concepts and then use the workbooks for practice. Some of the most challenging math topics, such as basic arithmetic and number properties, algebraic concepts, complex word problems, logical reasoning problems, etc., are brilliantly explained in these books. Just because of the high price of the book, you can skip the math strategies book. However, the EZ basic workbook is a good refresher to get started and advanced workbook is a "must have" if you are aiming for a high score.

After doing all this, use the OG and you will see a dramatic difference in your scores. You don't even have to take any of those pricy courses. I followed this process and my scores have jumped from the 500-range to the 700-range. Good luck in your prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
While studying the GMAT this book is a must. I would have been lost in the main exam if I didn't have it.
If you are looking to study the GMAT exam I would recommend that you just go ahead and order all nice books, they are all worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars GMAT Review

1-0 out of 5 stars More harm than good
I bought this book in preparation for the GMAT exam. While the tips on how to solve some of the quantitative problems are valuable, they can be found in other books. The serious problem with this book is that the practice problems in both the verbal and quantitative sections have numerous errors. You will not learn anything from this book and it causes more harm than good. I returned it to the store (not bought from Amazon) shortly after purchase. You'll do better off sticking with the Kaplan guides or the GMAT Official Guide

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I spent 30 mins in reading part of the verbal section in this book. I regret that I should spend my precious time on somewhere else.

The book just simply gives you the answer to the question without too much explanation for each answer choice. Moreover, the explanations are poorly written and organized.

I have returned the book to the store right away.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book gives only the most basic of overviews for what you need to know for the real GMAT exam. Additionally, the math questions have many, many typos (for instance, they use a '+' instead of an '=' in the question), so it is impossible to know how to answer the questions.I didn't bother carefully reviewing the verbal section, because I was so disappointed with the math.I would recommend this book, only if you need additional practice math problems, and typos don't drive you crazy.I highly recommend the actual book from ETS and Kaplan books (the other 2 I used) for studying for this exam.(Also Elements of Style by Strunk and White may also be useful to you.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Skip it
While this book covers many of the same strategies as other books, it is nowhere close to being as complete or as challenging. It also contained several typos. Your time is much better spent with the Kaplan book and CD and GMAC's official prep books- skip this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best guide for the GMAT!
Having used both "The GMAT Advantage with Professor Dave" and "The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition," I have to say that Professor Dave is the best study guide for this test.

I initially purchased the "Official" guide because I thought it would have the latest test preparation sample questions and tips for taking the test.In actual use, the "official" guide lacks much of what really counts when it comes to successfully studying for this exam... practical test-taking tips.

As we all know, the most important things to study before taking any standardized test are the format and structure of the test, along with the way in which the test is scored. Most of the information on this test is learned over the past years of college and earlier schooling, not from any study guide. This is the main reason why I highly recommend "The GMAT Advantage with Professor Dave!"

Professor Dave is the ultimate study guide.A GMAT test-taker only has to sit down and follow this well structured guide in order to learn how to take the test and succeed.

Professor Dave introduces you to the GMAT at the beginning of the book in a calming and motivating way.He helps structure the next four or five days of studying by actually dividing the sections of the book into specific days of study and setting breaks during the day.My favorite part of the guide was that it felt as if I had an actual professor there assisting me with preparing for the exam.

Overall, this book is a complete study guide for the GMAT.It surpasses other books in so many ways. Most importantly, it is structured with a realistic schedule for studying, and comes with a virtual professor that both motivates and brings a sense of support to your preparation for this test.If you're like many GMAT test takers, busy with a full time job or college work and lack free time, the structure of this book is worth every dollar and time you put into it!

What are you waiting for?Add this book to your shopping cart and start preparing for your GMAT test!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book For Math
This book has good explanation about different types of math problems. Book gives you KEY INSIGHTS information about various different math problems which will explain how to tackle a particular problem. Lot of help ful hints throught out the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good prep book
Works as an additional good prep book for GMAT. Helped me in securing a spot in NYU, Stern. Thanks prof Dave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done
I have attempted using many tools to try to crack the GMAT...but I was never fully satisfied until I found the GMAT w/Prof Dave. I love the style it's written in and the easy to learn tools that are given. I was very lucky that I had people recommend this book to me, and I, like them urge anyone who is going to take the GMAT to get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent review
This was the first book I picked up. I didn't know what to expect but I had
heard of the author from friends. I was a little intimidated by the exam but
this book was just what I needed to ease me into a study mode. The style is friendly and inviting, but don't be fooled by the classroom style, levity, andgraphics. The material is very challenging academic stuff.

The professor is friendly and polite, then challenges you with some very
difficult math problems. But he shows you how to categorize problems and several techniques to use. It really opened my eyes to math problem solving. I must have worked 300 problems. This was the most help. The math tutorials were excellent. There is a section in the book on new types of math problems that have appeared on the most recent exams. I'm not sure how they got this information but it shows they do their homework.

Be ready to work hard. There are four 7-8 hour classes in the book (plus
extensive homework) but it took me a lot longer than eight hours per class because I read every explanation carefully.

They rated every question in the book as to easy, medium, or difficult. I
didn't get this at first but later I realized recognizing harder questions
indicated I needed more time with these. This little tip made me aware of timing which has always been a problem for me. My pacing improved markedly.

The critical reasoning questions were abundant in the book, broken into
categories which made them easier to understand. Many of these questions were related to business (with some business terminology) that can be tough for Liberal Arts majors.

All in all, I strongly endorse this book and the Official Guide which is another great study guide, but without the pictures.

N. Luett, a student from Arizona

4-0 out of 5 stars Great career resource for students and professionals
Whether a recent college graduate or veteran from the 9 to 5 trenches, "101 Ways to Score Higher on Your GMAT" by Arlene Connolly will aid individuals in assessing their suitability and candidacy for graduate school to earn a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. While the book covers career goals, finding an MBA program and what to expect during grad school, the primary focus is on the two admission exams: the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).

Although some of the concepts outlined in the book's early chapters have little to do with a master's degree, they are valuable reminders about how to be a successful employee at any level. Qualities such as leadership, integrity and strong communication skills will aid in achieving goals whether on the job, in the classroom or in society. The sections on job hunting, preparing resumes and joining professional memberships offer practical, timely tips for individuals at any point in their careers.

For those who are on the fence about continuing their education, the book outlines the positive and negative factors in pursuing an MBA. Several chapters detail what to expect from graduate school, educational alternatives, job expectations for managers, career opportunities and financial factors. Both arguments are logical, factual and realistic. The real value for readers is in considering Connolly's insights and honestly assessing whether or not they are ready to make the commitment.

The second half of the book covers the admission process for getting into business school. Connolly covers everything from how to choose a school to marketing oneself as a candidate. In addition to a comprehensive overview written in an easy-to-read style, the author provides practical strategies and resources. The chapters on the GRE and GMAT give readers a thorough understanding of the testing process, content and how to prepare for the exams.

"101 Ways to Score Higher on Your GMAT" is a valuable resource for recent college graduates and individuals considering a career change. It's viability as a professional resource will last far beyond achieving an MBA; the sage wisdom and commonsense advice will always have a place on the bookshelves of truly successful managers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for Students
As I am a student currently searching for a career path, reading this book helped me see some of the possibilities that could potentially be the right path for me.Not only does this book give advice on how to score higher on your GMAT, it also gives advice on how to be a part of a business, and how to run a business.
I found this book to be very informative with ideas that could be helpful throughout day to day life for anyone. The author gives information from writing your admissions essay, to completing an impeccable resume, to succeeding in a job interview to your maximum potential. The author also discusses how to deal with different personality types in the world of business, which I feel is always useful to know, even if you are not planning on starting a business.
This book will be looked at in the future as a guide to help me go farther in a career than I had ever imagined.Reading it gives me the information needed to succeed, and the incentive to try harder.I recommend this book to anyone who is in need of guidance for any school or work situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Study Aid for the MBA Program
Determining if the pursuit of a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is the right academic choice for your specific career path requires considerable introspection and self assessment of a wide variety of professional skill sets and social attributes, along with an enormous amount of commitment, both professionally and personally. This includes the objective and comprehensive inspection of strengths, weaknesses, and experience. Additionally, a self examination of your specific motivations for choosing a career in management is necessary, as is determining your qualifications as a viable candidate for business school.

Once you've completed the various processes involved in reaching the decision to pursue an advanced degree in business management, the next step is to begin the application process for admission into a desired MBA program. The successful completion of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), along with a Graduate Record Examination (GRE), is required for the submission of an application for enrollment into graduate school to obtain your MBA. 101 Ways to Score Higher on Your GMAT, written by Arlene Connolly, is a concise preparatory guide for achieving optimal scores when taking these two standardized tests, while also providing a plethora of information regarding the literal graduate school experience (areas of study, curriculum, etc.). This book provides an exhaustive amount of information, resources, and guidance necessary to support the excellence for the most successful MBA student, even offering a brief discussion of the Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) program.

This expansive guide aides readers in successfully advancing within their respected fields of management, while subsequently suggesting several options for possible changes in occupational direction, as afforded by obtaining an MBA. It provides an extensive view into the many challenges involved in the daily professional life of those in various management positions and lends direction to increase the manager's specific corporate viability. Methods for assessment of specific business school choices are also contained within the text, including the idea of exploring distance learning programs, along with supportive resources for obtaining funding for the MBA education and practical advice for completion of the official application process. Sample examination questions are provided for the student to practice their approach to taking the GMAT and explanatory support is provided for score report assessment. Additionally, detailed web and print resources are included in the bibliography to further assist the student in their achievement of optimal test performance. 101 Ways to Score Higher on Your GMAT aptly deserves a 5-star rating; I would strongly recommend this invaluable guide as a reference for anyone considering pursuing a career in business management. Simply outlined, but very detailed, this book is superior in offering extensive preparation, guidance, and support to ensure a confident and ready GMAT testee.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong info
This book gives you wrong information about the GMAT. The book claims that each section is scored out of 60 points (it's actually out of 51). Also, the book's practice math questions cover such topics as calculating standard deviation, finding the area of a parallelogram, and analyzing data sets - none of which are actually on the GMAT.

4-0 out of 5 stars MANY STRONG POINTS AND SOME DEFICIENCIES
I am surprised to read all these negative reviews. I own Master the Gmat, the Official Guide 11th edition, and the Kaplan 800. And let me tell you something: none of them give you a comprehensive review of all the aspects tested by the GMAT.

Master the GMAT's verbal section is weak but it has by far the best explanations on geometry and coordinate planes, giving you formulas that I have not found anywhere else (like the formula to calculate the area of a rhombus). Also the lesson about exponents is one of the best I have seen and the math exercises are very realistic and similar to the ones you'll encounter in the real test. I have taken it twice so I know what I am talking about.

1-0 out of 5 stars what a mistake
I bought this book in a hurry at a local store, since I remembered good things about a different Arco prep book - what a mistake. It doesn't seem like the writers spent too much time putting this together.Lots of copying and pasting of instructions; annoying formatting/structure; sometimes questionable explanations to example questions.

In short - I'm going to purchase another guidebook today.Don't waste your time/money on this one!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best quality prep material, save your money
I got the book a few days before my exam because I wanted more practice. The material in the book is early beginner level. If you rely on this as a primary guide, you're in for a rude awakening on test day. More importantly, the testing software leaves a lot to be desired. Besides being buggy, there are problems with the material as well. Some questions are vague, incorrect and at least one was simply wrong. The level of the questions in the quant section is low and unrealistic. I believe that the same software is packaged with the Peterson guide as well (same publisher) and I looked at that guide too.
You could apply any of the reviews written for this book to that book as well.
In short, save your money and time. Go elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars Plain wrong sample questions
2 out of the first 20 practice questions (quantitative section) are wrong. I don't feel like using it any further, as the remaining questions are ambiguous.

Glad that I borrowed the book from a library and did waste my money. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars GMAT in a Box
These flash cards are not as helpful as I anticipated.I have the GMAT 2011 Premier book which is much more useful.Of course, the GMAT in a Box is not sold as a substitute, but as a supplement to the GMAT 2011 Premier book.In my opinion, if you have the book, don't bother with this item. There aren't as many examples as I expected. Many cards just review the Kaplan methods...which you could get by taking notes or highlighting certain points in the book.I was hoping for more sentence correction problems and math problems. If you want more practice after studying the book, I'd just buy their Verbal Workbook or the Math Workbook if you feel that you need more practice with one or the other.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice flashcards for those times when the book is not around
The part I like about these flashcards is that they test theory/rules/principles and strategies. There is a fair share of questions but most of them are interesting enough to wrap your mind around such as 3^0 = ? Sometimes there are tricky questions and sometimes useless ones such as True/Fals questions. I would rate this product as a medium level. Those who are new to the GMAT would benefit the most. All material seems to come straight from the Kaplan books, though some questions are structured very well to poke holes in my knowledge. One should be able to improve 20-30 points by going through these just by refreshing and getting quizzed on material.

The verbal portion of the flashcards is heavily focused on grammar/argument rules and strategies. There is also about 50 or so SC questions that ask to identify the error, which are kind of neat.

They are small enough (see my images in the customer images section) to carry in a wallet. There is no system to organize them such as a binder ring or a holder, so you will need to figure out how to carry them. Also the paper is pretty flimsy and they won't last long. If you get any of them wet, you can forget about it.

I am giving it 4 stars for content and taking one off for flimsiness and easy questions. I like these better than the Barron's flashcards which are Questions only though on the other hand, are of a higher paper quality and fit much more text.

Leave a comment if you have any questions about these flashcards - I reply fast.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Errors - Don't Waste Your Money
I bought this book, because at first glance, it looked like it would be very helpful for the Data Sufficiency part of the exam. I've finally reached my last straw with dealing with all the errors and inconsistencies in the book. One of my pet peeves is finding erros in books on difficult subjects. This one takes the cake.
At first I thought maybe there were things that I wasn't understanding thoroughly. So, I stuck with the book. Then I began to realize that it wasn't me, but the authors or editors who were at fault. Then I said to myself, "Okay, the material is pretty comprehensive so probably can be useful. I just need to accept the fact there are errors." Truthfully, I think I've had enough of this garbage. It really isn't helping me to spend gobs of time trying to figure out something that is clearly an error.

3-0 out of 5 stars The only book that deals with DS but has a few issues
Huge credit to the authors for creating the first Data Sufficiency book - it is a hard task and a good start but not perfect, so I can't give it more than 3 stars, and here is why:
* Only 90 pages have to do with Data Sufficiency approach and strategy. The rest of the book (300 pages) is a Math Review course, though there are DS practice questions along the way
* Not a clean easy-to-understand layout of material. The authors tried to highlight some points but it is still not easy to grasp book for a visual learner
* Overlap in material with the GMAT Math Prep Course
* Not the best explanations for questions
* Not a book for beginners

Some words in defense:
* Has hard questions and quite of them (200 questions and 200 examples are reviewed)
* Covers all areas tested on the GMAT math
* The only Data Sufficiency book out there
* Aims for higher-scoring individuals and probably is a good secondary math book (not the primary one)

At the end - I'm neutral about it. If you have trouble with DS and tried other books, you can get it, but don't expect miracles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stick with the Mainstream Review Books
The book is written with extremely poor grammar and is riddled with obvious errors that meaningfully alter what they're trying to explain. The worst example of this is on pg. 122:x=1 and y=1, so (x*y) + y = 1 + 1 = 1.The rest of the example is then based off the "fact" that 1 + 1 = 1...

The organization of the book is poor as well.Strategies are taught multiple times and in multiple sections, and I personally feel that my time would have been better spent on different review books.I also used ones published by the major test prep companies and found them much more helpful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap but flawed
This books needs a good proofreading. There are lots of typographical errors and examples where the answer is an answer to a different question. Also, some of the answers in the critical reasoning and sentence correction are just plain wrong! In every set of questions i missed @2 that i believed i had the right answer; and i usually got only 80% right in this book, but when i take the sample tests in the official gmat book (straight from the gmat folks) i get 95% correct, so i think the problem is w/ the book and not me.this may not have anything to do w/ the problems in the book, but i noticed that the authors are israeli, so i'm skeptical they're to be relied on as the authoritative source on idiomatic English, just as i would be skeptical, in the absence of any other evidence, of any Americans who claimed to be the arbiter of idiomatic Hebrew.

nonetheless, this book is good practice and small and portable, but don't take their answers as gospel.

2-0 out of 5 stars It's cheap but too outdated
This book does not have current GMAT information. The test is nowcomputer-based and its best advice to you in preparing is to remember tobring plenty of #2 pencils to the test site.

3-0 out of 5 stars you get what you pay for
If you have a tight budget, buy this book.If you are more concerned with accuracy, keep looking. The book is good but has many errors that make it hard to trust. With wrong answers listed as right in an answer key, it's difficult to have faith in the accuracy of your results.Sample test results are not numeric, also, which would allow a more meaningful practice run, in my opinion.I'm sure the actual scoring algorithms are likely difficult to replicate, but even just a rough guide like "a score of FAIR on a section may translate into a 500-600 rough score estimate" would be a big help for those of us with a goal score in mind. The book is well worth the price, but may be disappointing if you hoped to get it all in this package or are annoyed by errors. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid for its intended purpose
If you need a foundational math refresher, this is a good place to start. Most other GMAT books focus on strategy and tricks, while this book teaches you key concepts you'll need to know for the quantitative section. Those studying should start with this book (you can get through it in about 15 hours) and then move on to more advanced concepts. I hesitate to give this five stars because it is so fundamental that it will not, by itself, help lead you to a 700+ score.

1-0 out of 5 stars rife with errors
I am only on page 74 of this book, skimming it, doing a few problems here and there, and already I've discovered 3 errors.1 error is harmless (answer key drill section skips from 3 to 5), the other two are math errors.I was sitting there for an hour trying to figure out why I was wrong, and it turns out the book is wrong. It is as if this book was not proofread or peer edited at all. It's ridiculous. In fairness to the book, it reinforces areas that will help improve the GMAT score, it has a good, practical ideas. But an exam prep book guide ABSOLUTELY CANNOT have math errors, it's unacceptable.
I've written all over this thing so I can't return it either, I'm angry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental Review of GMAT Math but only if you need it
Foundations of GMAT Math is a review of basic math principles. If you picked a GMAT Math book and having a hard time with it, this book is for you. Prepare to see pie charts explaining factions, multiplications table, explanations of what a multiple or prime is and how to factor numbers. If you have not faced math (or were afraid to) in the past 5 years, this book is for you. Here are some important facts:

PROS:
- Very thorough
- Great coverage of coordinate geometry
- Helpful and valuable divisibility and exponents section
- TONS of bonus questions online (400+ of GMAT-format questions)
- Have not verified every question, but hoping for quality unlike Kaplan Math Foundations book (which i regrettably gave 5 stars but amazon does not allow changing ratings)

CONS:
- QUITE A FEW ERRORS (please see MGMAT's website for the errata)
- The book has 400 practice questions but they are not in a GMAT format, rather a math-textbook format
- Long! 300 full-size pages - I think the expectation is that you skip parts that you know
- Some shortcuts (such as diamond method of solving quadratic equations) are confusing to those educated in formal math (but then those probably won't be using this book)
- Easy (i know it is supposed to be), but still - only easy questions

Bottom line: if you are comfortable with other MGMAT books, this book is probably not for you. If you are uneasy about math, give this book a try - you don't regret it. It is fantastic value for the 800 questions it offers. Would also recommend you pick up Number Properties and Word Translations by Manhattan GMAT. If you have purchased a full Manhattan GMAT set of books and hesitating between this book and Kaplan's version, definitely get this one - it integrates better.

For reference, here are the topics covered by the book:
1. Equations
2. Quadratic equations
3. Word problems
4. Divisibility - very helpful
5. Exponents and roots - helpful as well
6. Fractions
7. Fractions, decimals, and percents
8. Beyond equations
9. Geometry (very extensive section)

4-0 out of 5 stars I did well on the GMAT with this.
I used this for a few weeks before I took the GMAT (I took a couple of full practice exams) and I scored very well on the exam. The CD ROM has little animations that are annoying and slow, but once you get past those and get to the actual testing/preparations it is okay.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Exercise
I found this beneficial and relied on it heavily while studying. The test seemed to be a closer assessment of ability than the product from GMAT, but I used both while studying.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan is Horrible!
I got the book.Signed up for the website. Then didn't have time to study for a while because of work. When I finally had time to use the book and study, my internet access (where a lot of important suppliments are) was cut off because it was passed the assumed amount of time.I tried getting it restored, but Kaplan was no help.
1st-They kept connecting me to the wrong departments who were too busy to talk, so took messages and never returned your calls.
2nd-Didn't respond to emails
3rd-After 4 days of trying to get in contact with the right department, I found out at Friday at 6pm that the people who could help me are closed from 5pm and the whole weekend. So now I have to lose another 3 days. This is very frustrating for someone who has to work and is limited with time. The phone opperator said this is a common problem but Kaplan does not care to spend the money to have employees over the weekend.

DO NOT USE THIS BOOK, THE SERVICE THAT COMES WITH IT IS TERRIBLE!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, but you'll have to do the heavy lifting yourself
This is a decent GMAT prep book. It's worth the money, and will help you get in gear for the GMAT.However, the GMAT is computer-based now, so relying on the books too much is of limited value. It will help you brush up on math and grammar a bit, and get a feel for the questions on the exam.If you are serious about doing well on the GMAT, you need to do some practice tests on the computer.

If it means anything to you, I got a 720 on the GMAT.This book definitely helped, because I hadn't done any math for a few years.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's helpful
I'm in agreement with what most people have said. The Kaplan review is definitely harder than the real GMAT, they work you harder on the practice tests and score you lower. This will most likely be a discouraging experience, but if you work at it and really put in the effort then it will lead to a good score.

My Kaplan scores were as follows:
550, 550, 620

I just took the GMAT and scored 710. The three materials I used were Kaplan, GMAC's Quantitative Review book, and the 2 free downloadable practice tests from MBA.com (which I scored 620 & 720 on). Bottom line, use Kaplan to prepare, then use the MBA.com practice tests as an accurate indicator of how you will really score. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of GMAT Verbal concepts, but weak on practice questions
I self studied and scored a 770 on the GMAT.Here are my thoughts on the PowerScore GMAT Verbal Bible:

===== OVERVIEW =====

The PowerScore GMAT Verbal Bible is the third GMAT prep book released by PowerScore, a company known for its top notch verbal preparation tools. This book is designed to cater to the needs of students having trouble with the entire verbal section of the GMAT and presents itself as an alternative to the Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook. However, the Kaplan book is more practice-oriented, while the PowerScore guide seems to be more focused on detailing strategy and concepts.

The Verbal Bible seems to combine topics from two other GMAT guides by PowerScore, the PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible and the PowerScore GMAT Sentence Correction Bible. I have personally compared the Critical Reasoning (CR) section of this book with the entire CR Bible and the differences are limited only to the omission of some comparatively unimportant chapters (for questions that did not appear as much on the test) and fewer practice problems. A section on Reading Comprehension is added to complete the trilogy of question types that appear on the verbal part of the GMAT. This is why buying all three GMAT prep guides from PowerScore is not recommended, because you will see significant overlap among the materials.

As was the case with the CR Bible, the Verbal Bible contains relatively few GMAT-style questions. While each chapter does contain a section of drills to enforce specific concepts, the number of GMAT-type problems you'll find at the end of chapters is:

* 31 Critical Reasoning
* 8 Reading Comprehension
* 77 Sentence Correction

===== PROS =====

* Good coverage of the concepts, strategies and traps of the various verbal questions. While not as exhaustive on CR as the CR Bible, for instance, the fact that it condenses all the most important points into fewer pages is a plus for students pressed for time

* High quality questions are a known feature of PowerScore materials and this book does not fall short of these high expectations. Both GMAT-style questions and drill format questions are carefully crafted and each answer choice is explained in detail

* The book is a pleasant read, especially since the authors try to take you behind the scenes of the process of writing a GMAT question. Understanding this process ensures a better familiarity with the test, thus improving your performance

===== CONS =====

* Only a handful of practice questions! This is particularly obvious for the Reading Comprehension section: only two (relatively short and easy) passages for GMAT-style practice. There's also an issue of balance here, since there are considerably more sentence correction questions than critical reasoning or reading comprehension questions

* Too much emphasis on theory in the Critical Reasoning section of this book. Note that concepts from this section are often referenced in the Reading Comprehension section later, so I advise you to go over the former first

* No clear advice on note-taking in the verbal part of the GMAT: I would have loved to see the authors' position on this issue, since people often debate whether it is advisable to take notes while you read

* A few editing errors in the Sentence Correction (SC) part, since it was made by cutting out chapters from the SC Bible: for instance, chapters are not correctly numbered or the authors mention twenty extra practice questions when there are only ten

===== BOTTOM LINE =====

The PowerScore Verbal Bible is not without its faults (the biggest being the small number of practice questions), but overall it gets four stars out of five: complement this book with the The Official Guide for GMAT Verbal Review, 2nd Edition, and you'll have a pretty good set of tools to attack the verbal part of the GMAT.

About me: Dana Jinaru, 770 GMAT scorer, expert at Beat The GMAT - a community serving 100K+ GMAT students/month

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Material but has a number of weaknesses
PowerScore series are undoubtedly one of the best for CR and SC.
This book builds upon success of The PowerScore GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible and The PowerScore GMAT Sentence Correction Bible but with those two great books out there, this book does not add up. The only advantage I see is the Reading Comprehension section (new) but with only a few passages and questions, it does not justify purchasing the book. Here is a detailed analysis of the book:

Verbal Bible Advantages:
+ Great SC Material
+ Great CR Material
+ Great RC strategies
+ Condenses information into all-in-one verbal workbook that competes well against Kaplan GMAT Verbal Workbook

Disadvantages:
- Less practice/instruction than SC Book
- Less practice/instruction than CR Book
- Almost no Reading Comprehension practice (section includes only 2 passages with 4 questions each)
- Overall could use more practice questions (true about all PowerScore books)

The book does contain about 125 GMAT questions and 85 Mini-drills (these are non-gmat style questions but still very helpful for practicing and nailing down the strategies). Out of the 125 GMAT questions, 50 are in CR section, 8 in RC, and 77 in SC.

*** Bottom Line: ***
If you are looking for a great all-in-one Verbal workbook that you can cover in a few weeks, this is a great choice - it condenses 700 pages of PowerScore books into 400. However, minuscule number of practice questions, especially in the RC section, make it unattractive.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Answers!
This book will be awesome but there are so many wrong answers and typos that make it very bad.
The answer sheet tell you an answer and in the explanations give you other so... which one is the good one?

1-0 out of 5 stars Ironically FULL of errors- DON'T BUY IT!
I've never written an Amazon review, but felt this book warranted one. It has SOOOO many errors. Typos, missing diagrams, incorrect information given in the question, the list goes on and on.

I'm wildly disappointed with The Princeton Review, as I've used them to prep for other tests.

I also read- cover to cover- "Cracking the GMAT" which did not contain noticeable errors (That's another GMAT test-prep book). Where was the EDITING in 1012 Questions? It's quite disheartening, as I've spent quite a bit of time pouring over this book, and my GMAT test is soon approaching.

Consider another book. I wish I would have read these reviews BEFORE I bought this dumb book. I'm considering contacting the publisher to complain. This book shouldn't be on the market as-is.

2-0 out of 5 stars EPIC TYPO FAILURE (but still lots of good material)
Same experience as everyone on here: you look up your answer that you're SURE is correct, and there's the explaination for a completely different question.WTF?

It's amazing how much time they devoted to creating questions vs. proofreading.Epic fail on this count.

On the other hand, there is lots of good explaination and quesitons, and I've found PR to be the best out there. For this they earn one extra star.

1-0 out of 5 stars Many questions, but so many mistakes it confuses
The editors of this book clearly dropped the ball. There are so many mistakes throughout, particularly in the geometry section. Diagrams are missing, simple mathmatical mistakes are frequent, and explainations don't match the questions. If you don't have a firm grasp on the concepts, this book could really confuse you.

All this being said, the sheer number of questions allow you to practice the questions, and really cement your skills. And since it's broken down by tiny concepts (triangles, quadralaterals, and equations all have their own sections), you can really focus on what you need to practice.

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree
Everything's been said, but just to back up the previous reviews, the errors in this book are prevalent enough to make the entire book completely useless. It's a waste of time to burn these answers and methods into your brain when you can only be somewhat certain those answers are even correct.I'm going to try to get my money back for this book although I feel entitled to much more then just a refund, seeing as I've wasted about 3 weeks of my time-sensitive study program on this book.

Just to give a few examples, the most common errors are simple typos, answer explanations referring to the wrong question, and answers corresponding to the wrong letter such as on pg. 113, which says the answer to question #5 is D. 540,000 but in the actual question 540,000 is choice E.

Worse then those are the errors that render the question impossible to answer such as the first data sufficiency statement on question 6 on pg. 90: "Monique caught three times as many fish as Shannon, who caught half as many fish as Shannon".

The most destructive of all, however, are the answers that appear to be correct, thus prompting you to adopt the strategy used, but are actually false.I've caught several of these only after spending extra time going over something that seemed strange, which leads me to believe that there's many others I didn't actually catch that have led me to adopt eroneous strategies. An example is the explanation to question #9 ,erroneously labled as question 8, on pg. 114.I won't write the whole thing, but the answer arrived at is dependent on the statement that "There is no combination of numbers that will fit statement (2) and provide a "yes" answer though, so statement (2) is sufficient. The answer is choice (B)".If you trusted Princeton Review you would move on, committing their strategy to memory, but if you work out the problem a little farther you see that there are plenty of combinations of numbers that fit statement (2) and provide a "yes" answer, so the answer would not be (B) and the strategy given is flawed. This error can obviously be very destructive to the learning process when you're trying to commit every aspect of this book to memory. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginning to study for the GMAT.
This book is a great resource for beginning to study for the GMAT.There is a fairly good math refresher appendix as well as written explanations for each practice question in the book. There are as many practice questions as can be reasonably expected in this book, but you will likely need to reference another book for additional practice questions.Overall, a great book to get you started.

1-0 out of 5 stars ZERO Customer Service!
While the book is so-so, the customer service is non-existent for the companion portion of the Kaplan website. The only way to get help is via e-mail, which would be okay except they don't reply to e-mails.(The phone number is only for people who have paid for online classes.)After sending 3 e-mails over the course of two-weeks asking the same simple question, I've received ZERO RESPONSE.This is completely unnaceptable.I bet Kaplan's competitors do better... they couldn't possibly do worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
this book is a really good one to prepare for the GMAT test. you can really improve with it and the really good thing is the code to access Kaplan website in order to follow how well you are improving. You also have many practices and tips for the Test. it's really great.

4-0 out of 5 stars GMAT Comprehensive Program
I looked at several GMAT study aids, and this was the best. The ability to take practice tests online was very important. I would recommend this in conjunction with the free exams that you can download from the GMAT site.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is Kaplan Premier program Books version without CD rom @ half price
I was in a dilemma when I went out to buy this book. The dilemma was whether to buy this one or the Kaplan premier 2009 but I finally decided to buy this book after some hours of time spend at the near by book store reviewing their indexes and content.

All topics of premier program of Kaplan are covered in this bookexcept the math review which they had touch based in the appendix section . So I can easily conclude that this book is just a similar book as Kaplan premier program book just without a CD-Rom at half price.

As you all know ,Kaplan is a must for GMATtest prep along with the Official Guides so no doubt that one should get this for effective preparation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This books is worth every penny
This is perhaps one of the oldest and one of the best books to learn all the concepts and techniques. If you are on a budget, for this price you'll get many times worth the money you spend. It has ample practice exercises and tests, much more than any other book. It's a thick book and every page is almost fully covered. If you still think you need more help, consider Kaplan or Princeton Review. If you need more detailed material, consider EZ GMAT series and/or Manhattan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review if decent - practice questions are weird compared to OG
I did not find the book very helpful.
The practice questions are strange compared to OG. They are sometimes wrong, sometimes asked in a confusing way. I went through the OG, and never encountered those kind of questions.
I would not recommend the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of mistakes and the CD fails
The book gets one star, rather than zero, because the basic math review was worth the information. However, it's easier and cheaper to find that information for free on the net.

The practice problems were full of errors, both in the math and English sections, though the later was much worse than the former. They used illogic and misreading of clearly printed text in supporting incorrect answers.

I thought that was bad, then I turned to the CD. The problems weren't proofread. Many math problems had missing labels on images. Meanwhile, the English problems had incorrect or missing underlining of sentence correction problems, grammatical errors and other basic issues. Even worse, the long reading comprehension texts and questions were all jumbled, as the tests kept jumping back and forth between texts rather than giving all questions for a text immediately after the text.

The interface was poor and coding characters kept appearing on the left-hand side. I finished one section of a test just as someone called and needed me to head somewhere. I couldn't save the test status and it lost the information. The next two times I tried taking the tests, both of the CAT test froze and couldn't be completed. The second test did so on the fortieth problem of the English section -- after I'd wasted hours. I could never complete, and therefore couldn't even score, either test.

Nobody should by a Barron's book. The people behind it seem to either not know or not care about how to create a proper practice environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average
I am actually not very happy with this book. The review is very confusing and explaining math and verbal together, which I find hard to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arco Gre Gmat Math Review by David Frieder
This is the best book yet for my math phobia!I am switching careers and need to take the GMAT again. The book is written in a simplified way that even I can understand.Never thought that math could be fun.Buy it, you'll like it...

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT
I've always been a math person, but because I passed all of my math requirements for college, I never took a single math class in college. But 5 years after graduating, I realized that I wanted to pursue business school, so this was one of the books I picked out mainly to brush-up on my math. WOW, THIS IS SUCH AN AWESOME BOOK. It covers the BASICS, but trust me, if you don't know them, you're completely screwed. There were plenty of rules I had forgotten and this book covered them ALL. And it even gives you GREAT practice on the yucky data-sufficiency questions. Sure the problems aren't extremely challenging, but again, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE BASICS. SO GET THIS BOOK, YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but some wrong answers
I've read just up till part 2 of this book and the basics and examples plus exercises are great. however, i was working on problem 15, pg 134 and the answer should be -21 instead of -20 for a solution of x<-20. haven't read the rest, but guess you have to trust your own solutions are times. happy reading !

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably GOOD for GMAT but definitely NOT for GRE
I don't have this book but I've read its table of content. The material is TOO EASY for GRE in Math.Probably it is good for your GMAT but definitely not for GRE.It does not contain much information about Calculus and Algebra (well, it does contain elementary algebra which is not useful for GRE).If you're preparing for GRE in Math, do not choose this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars !!!
I found this book very useful as first step in GMAT Math. Zero step was math refreshener, but ARCO math is perfect to go into GMAT Math orbit. ... Read more
