Product Description
This brand-new addition to BarronÂ's series of Advanced Placement test prep manuals presents a comprehensive review of music theory, followed by two full-length practice tests with all questions answered and explained. These practice tests include both aural and non-aural sections. The four audio CDs enclosed with the manual provide aural skill development prompts for both practice testsÂ' aural sections, as well as material that complements exercises and examples in the subject review chapters. Topics covered in the review chapters include music fundamentals, harmonic organization, harmonic progression, melodic composition and dictation, relationship of key centers, harmonic dictation and composition, visual score analysis, contextual listening, strategies for harmonizing and sight-singing, and much more. Multiple-choice questions with strategies for test-taking success appear at the end of many chapters. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars alright
It was a good review for the test. The practice exams were helpful, also scanning through the chapters helped flesh out my vocab. The melodic examples were aweful to listen to. And I wish they'd cite which exerpts they used because I want to know the name of the organ concerto in the second practice exam. I would recommend it for someone who needs a good summary of the course before going into the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding study guide
Nancy Scoggin's AP MUSIC THEORY provides a fine review of practice tests offering two full-length AP practice exams with all questions answered and explained. From music basics to composition, harmonic dictation, and strategies for sight-singing, this accompanies four audio CDs providing skill development prompts and makes for an outstanding study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! An AP Music Theory Study Guide
Finally, an AP Music Theory Study Guide.I've been teaching AP Music Theory for about 6 years and I have had incredible difficulty in finding well sequenced, appropriate material for preparing the students for the AP Music Theory exam, a most ear challenging adventure for many people. Most adopted textbooks tend to be college theory books that are designed for multiple-years of theory, and are not as user friendly for developing the skills that most high school students are in need of developing for this exam.

This study guide walks you through all the sections of the exam, with great aural examples.Every chapter is concluded with practice questions designed to the same flow and feel of the questions on the AP exam.Early chapters cover more introductory materials, but still use the AP format for questions. Each unit has an Aural Skills exam with the accompanying CDs.There are 2 full practice exams at the end of the book.Used in conjunction with released AP exams, your students can practice on 4 or 5 total AP style exams to be more prepared for the actual exam itself.

I have found it difficult to find materials that will help develop the aural skills necessary for exam success. In this book, you have a logical progression (no pun intended) of exercises to help develop both melodic and harmonic dictation skills. In addition, there are great examples and exercises for preparing for the sight-singing portion as well.

I have recommended to all my students that they purchase this book to help prepare for the exam.Next year, I hope to use it as a supplementary text book for the class starting in the beginning.

I would recommend this study guide to any student who is serious about being prepared for the AP Music Theory exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of The Best!!!
I absolutely hate McGraw Hill! But this book is a surprise. I think that the AP series are the only good series in McGraw Hill Publishing. It analyzes the chaoter section by section and gives quizzes to ensure proper understanding. This is a steal for the price! I actually thought Princeton Review/Kaplan would be a good bet but I am for sure that this is the best one by far. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Steps to a 5
I received this book in a timely manner and in good condition. It was just as expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent AP Exam Guide
I'm an AP Physics teacher, and let me tell you, this book was a lifesaver for me the first year I taught the course. The amount of information that is available via the College Board and other online sources is overwhelming, to say the least.I floundered around for awhile during my first year until this book was recommended to me by our AP coordinator.

I love that the authors were able to succinctly cover all of the topics on the AP Physics B exam (I cannot speak to the C material as I do not teach that course). The chapters are well-organized, efficient, and easy for students to read. The style of the Multiple Choice and Free Response questions in the book for is an accurate reflection of the College Board's style and students gain valuable experience by reading them. The other AP Physics Review guides out there tend to be bloated with excessive information and are not easily approachable by any stretch of the imagination. This book is far and away the best out of the various guides I've examined.

The goal of this book is to prepare students for the exam, and I tell my students it's the best $12 they will ever spend when it comes to earning college credit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty great!
I started reading this book about a week and a half before the exam.

At first, it was easy. I didn't feel like it was helping me at all. But I guess it did because I GOT A 5 ON THE AP EXAM! :D

This book, like most of Princeton's books, is very well organized. And it is up to you to make the most of it.

I would say that the examples are WAY harder than the passages on the actual AP exam.

It gives you tons of great tips.

This book was very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
It's as great as the rest of the Princeton Review books, with their attractive girls smiling in the front cover.

3-0 out of 5 stars the new dust collector 3000!
my class was pretty comprehensive so i never found a need to use this book other than the required taking notes after each chapter. It's all good though.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite right.
This book was well written, and has a good amount of visuals, which help a lot in understanding concepts in environmental science.
However good the book was, it didn't seem to reflect what was on the actual AP exam very well.
It claimed that pollution would be about 30% of the test, when really I only remember a handful questions on pollution. Also, not everything that was on the exam was covered.

So, it's good, but it didn't quite hit the mark for what the APES exam actually is and covers.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are Better Books Out There
This book has been very frustrating to read.I have found many errors, for example "life-life" (I think they meant half-life?), and many other typos. The content is too general.I know it's suppose to be a "review" book, but I feel like they could have built on ideas a little more. The review questions at the end of each chapter address things that either don't come up until the following chapters, or that don't even come up at all.In addition, some of the answers to the multiple choice questions are wrong!Overall, this book is not worth the money. My advice would be to go to the collegeboard webiste a purchase a more qualified review book there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better could be worse
I am a tutor for AP Env. Sci.Some of the text is poorly written. Some of the practice questions don't even make sense. The review material doesn't touch on some of the practice questions.I don't know if any of the other review books are any better, but this one leaves a lot of room for improvement.Maybe next year's will be better.

4-0 out of 5 stars 2007 Barrons APES
The book is fairly well written. Gets to the point quickly, but I wish it was organized a little better. I heard that the 2006 version is a little better because it has more information. I guess the 2007 version was cut shorter to get to the point more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God For Cliffnotes!!
i recently bought the cliffnotes study guide for AP Biology and it has been such an amazing help to me. As a senior in highschool it can be really hard to keep up with all my classes and have time to outline an entire chapter for Biology. This book lists important points as well as gives details of the various larboratories you will complete for the class. The book is written in a way that is easy to understand and I would definitely reccommend it to anyone taking Biology.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect condition, timely arrival
It's just what his instructor asked. It arrived very timely and in excellent condition. great value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book + CD!
Covers a lot of concepts and provides plenty of practice with SIX AP bio tests. All the tests and the chapters are on the CD so you can have them on your laptop.Only two of the tests are in the book though.
Cliffs has essays and multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter too.

Cons:No index! and few diagrams.
Pros:Worth it for all that test practice - if you have the time.

We used this along with Barron's 2010.The latter had 3 tests (1 diagnostic and 2 at the back) and is better for the diagrams and more user-friendly, spacious layout.

Don't forget to check out the collegeboard AP Bio links for past exam papers (essay questions). As you cannot practice with real past mcqs - these review books are invaluable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best available AP Prep book
This book is simply the best because:
1. The explanations are good, concise and to the point.
2. The practice tests are harder than the real thing, so if you can get 80% correct on the practice test you'll easily get a 5 on the Real AP test.

Just FYI I have gotten fives on all five AP's I've taken and I've used Barrons to prepare for all of them.

I have look over some of my friends books that aren't made by barrons and they simply aren't as rigorous, if you want a 5 get a Barron's book, if you want a 3 princton review or 5 steps to a 5.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that good...
Me and my friend decided to buy this book for or APs because our teacher recommended it. But we were disappointed. Its not that the book was bad but because it was very hard to follow and too complicated. The explanations were too complex and there is only one practice test. It was very hard to get even one concept out of it. I ended up going to the test totally clueless and unconfident. I just came back and I totally feel bad about how I preformed on the test.
I don't recommend it. Get the 5 steps to a 5 my friend ditched this book and got it and totally recommends it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ap study guide
Excellent book. AP english students are required to get this book by the teacher for practice tests and helps prepare the students every year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a good book.It has an excellent glossary, and the practice tests are very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Expected
When I bought this book, I wondered how a book could help you review for the AP Lit exam, since there are no facts to really cover like in other exams. However, this book is extremely useful for those seeking a high score. It brings you step by step through the process of writing prompts, pointing out important details and giving a plethora of examples. The tips on the multiple choice questions allow you to review all the major terms you need and offers many opportunities to test yourself, with the why behind the answer included.Plus, you will feel better about the test because it is written by a former test writer. This makes it feel like you can trust what he is saying about the test, and I do not remember him being wrong once when it came to the actual exam.In conclusion, buy this book or don't buy one at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reasonable, though slightly outdated
PROS:
This book offers substantial advice; the most useful piece of which (in my opinion) was "In the essays, be sure to ANSWER THE ESSAY QUESTION, the whole question and nothing but the question." It also walks the reader through several multiple choice passages.

CONS: The literary term list was somewhat basic, and in general, the essay-writing advice seemed confining and old fashioned.

The other reviews stating the lack of thoroughness of this exam book are correct; however, the purpose of a review book is to REVIEW. By the time you are trying to study for the actual exam, you should already know most of what you need to know from your class. If you don't, this is not the book for you.

Also, I disagree that the multiple choice practice tests are "too easy."While they do vary in the level of difficulty, when I took the actual exam, there were multiple questions that seemed to be straight from the book, which was very comforting. The explanations for the questions are decent, although there were several questions where their answer as incorrect.

Overall, however, using this book solely, I feel confident in my success on the AP US History exam and would recommend this to any AP student who has at least some background knowledge in US History and as been in even a slightly rigorous course.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just... Don't Bother
To start off, the "tips and tricks" of taking the AP US test is apparently "eliminate certain answers" and "pace yourself." Thank you, Captain Obvious. As if every person in AP US hasn't heard these "tricks" ten million times. There is absolutely NOTHING to help you write the DBQ or essays. No explanation, grading scale, zip, zero, zulch.

Second, the actual review section is deplorable. Absolutely abysmal. I used the United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination later and realized that I didn't refresh my memory at all from the review text. It just didn't stick in my brain, which is saying something because I remember stuff from the book notes on the unit tests. Side note to my fellow highlighterers: The pages are extremely thin, causing highlighters to bleed through.

Finally, the practice test seemed unbelievably easy. The explained answers were nice, but I only got a couple wrong on the multiple choice, where as the questions in my other book where much more tricky.

Just save yourself the wasted money and review time and AVOID THIS BOOK! ... Read more

Every work of art discussed is illustrated in the text with an adjoining bulleted list of its characteristics. A diagnostic exam precedes the chapters surveying art history, and two full-length AP practice exams are presented at the end of the book with answer keys, diagnostic charts, answer explanations, and model essay responses. 4-0 out of 5 stars NY CST- visual arts
Good book for studying for the NY CST- Visual Arts test. Not everything thats in this book is useful but it's a very good tool. Some of the questions from this book is on the CST- visual arts test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really prepared me well for the AP
When I started to study for the AP, this book really helped me out. It provided all the information on works of art and architecture, the periods associated with them, as well tons of helpful practice questions and tests. The flash card program on the included CD also helped me out. I was able to flash through hundreds of pictures the night before the AP and memorize the ones I didn't know.

If you are going to take AP art history, are currently taking it, or deciding on which review book to buy to study from, this is definitely the one to choose. It will prepare you well and has everything you need to do well on the exam. It definitely brought my score up atleast a point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful supplement
I teach AP Art History and have read both of the new competing AP Art History Review books.I guess I expected this to be better than the one that came out about a year before this one (created by the teachers & published by REA) since this one carries the well known Barron's brand. I found that each were helpful but I didn't see this as superior to the other. Both included information that clarified some things that are a bit obtuse in the textbooks. It would be impossible for either of them to replace all the info in the textbooks but both are helpful supplements. They are also better than the previous "workbooks" that were available which just asked questions for the students to fill in.
AP Art History SOUNDS like it would be one of the easier AP courses but it has double the content of most others because it covers TWO college semester courses (of course the reward of a high score is double the college credit in most schools!).It is the sheer volume of new information that overwhelms students (and frankly teachers) so anything that summarizes and clarifies is helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test preparation review
This book was very helpful as I prepared for my Pre-Admissions Content Test for Art EC-12.It is a very good review of Art History.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of a lifesaver
With only 1 week to go until the AP Art History exam, I found myself begin to panic. I had bought this book a month prior to the exam, but it had been sitting in my room, collecting dust. I thought that I would get around to reading it eventually, but thanks to my wonderful procrastination skills, I didn't crack open the spine until a week before the test.

All I have to say now is, thank you, Barron's, for publishing an AP Art History review book that is concise yet lengthy enough to help one do well on the test. I read the book in about a 3-4 day span, crammed all the information into my head, took the test, and came out feeling like I had done remarkably well for using just this book as my only study aid. The Barron's' book will tell you everything you need to know, and just the right amount of it, too. (extra note: It would be wisest NOT to do what I did and wait until a week to study for the test, but I'm sure you know that already.)

Unlike the REA Art History book, this book actually has thumbnail images of all of the art, which makes it a lot easier to study. Granted, thumbnails can never serve as substitutions for the real-life thing, which is why this book would be better-suited to those who have taken a 1-year art history survey course with a comprehensive, full-color textbook.

That aside, however, this would be the ideal book for anyone who wants to do well on the AP test itself. Whether you start studying months in advance, or week like I did, you should be able to gain the full benefit out of this book. The practice tests were also good and very close to the actual test itself.

EDIT: I received a score of 4 on the exam, which was in large part thanks to the help of this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad, But....
I bought it just because it's from Barron, however when I opened the book, I was kind disappointed that how the structure and content disconnected each other, it says it's for AP prep, but I found the difficulty was quite beyond the comprehensibility of high school grads who wish to take their AP exam in Mandarin Chinese.
Anyway, it's a nice start for those who want to better design and teach the AP Chinese course in future.

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't know who thought it was a good idea to find a woman with such a squeaky voice
The title says it all. The female voice in the cds is sooo squeaky that I cannot stand it. Her voice needs to be lowered two octaves. The written material is fine, just the CD voice is unbearably annoying. I just want her to shut up instead of actually listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful set of review and practice tests for the AP test
Any preparing for the AP Chinese Language and Culture test needs BARRON'S AP CHINESE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE, a powerful set of review and practice tests for the AP test. Questions in both traditional and simplified Chinese characters are just like the actual exam, offering two full-length practice exams with answers plus audio CDs of spoken material.

1-0 out of 5 stars Barron's AP Physics A Review Book
This is the worst AP review book on the planet, if you want to fail your final exam or get a 1 on the AP exam, get this book. It has numerous mistakes, it is the absolute worst review book FOR PHYSICS. I don't know how Barron's does on other AP exams, but for Physics, it sucks. NO help at all, I wish I had not written on the practice test or I would return it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book is full of mistakes!!!
I am a teacher of AP Physics B.I had my entire class purchase this for review preparation.Unfortunately, the book is riddled with mistakes--multiple-choice questions that have no correct answer, solutions done wrong, calculation mistakes, even questions that have two correct answers. This continually undermines the confidence of my students.I am having to check through every problem and example in the book.I don't know if the author or the publisher, or both, forgot to do any proofreading of the text, or if they were just plain lazy and sloppy with their work.Oh, did I mention the haphazard use of significant figures? ...like the question that gives data to one significant figure, but the answer is given to four significant figures.Go figure!I have used Barrons study guides for other courses in the past, and have been satisfied, but this has been a horrible experience. If someone knows of a truly good study guide for this material, please post it here.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for a general review
This book is good for the AP test, but if you are like most of us who use it as a study guide to supplement our textbooks, this book may not do the job. It is not detailed enough for class purposes.

Also, I don't know why they put problems you can't possibly do without a calculator for some multiple choice questions. They label those problems as possibly harder than real AP questions, but what's the point when there won't be any like it on there? I guess it's only good for midterm/final practice for you course.

Overall it's pretty good for a quick review before the AP or your midterm/final. I saw problems very similar to the ones in this book on mine. ... Read more

Came quickly, perfect shape, now I can't wait to start AP Calc .. (kidding.) :)

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE BOOK DON"T BUY
When I first got the book I had good hopes but they were immediately vanished after I started reading it. The explanations provided are limited to almost nothing at all. The entire book is basically 10 examples for each concept provided with no explanations but only shown work that sometimes does not make any sense because of the mistakes in it. Also constantly contradicts what it does and does not write anything about why they did that. I want my money back. ... Read more

This book was full of writting, and it's a book full of practice tests. Its also 14 years old so not at all up to date with the current AP exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is excellent for reviewing all of the exercises that will be seen on the AP Spanish Lang. exam. In addition to the practice exercises, there are several appendixes in the back of the book that give hundreds of verb forms and their definition in English, as well as idioms, and a glossary of Spanish words. Great choice for an AP level class.

This book did not help me at all...... There were practice test in here but they didn't seem to match the chapter for that test..... Spanish being my first language, I wanted to refresh so that I can clep that class but this book didn't nothing for me it was a waist of money....

The book that i had rcieved is usless for my class. It is incorrect to be selling USED WORKBOOKS.This takes off the work of students trying to learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best AP Spanish Review Book Out There!!!
This workbook, which our AP Spanish teacher provided us, was extremely helpful in preparing for the 2008 AP Spanish exam. All the activities, including the narratives, dialogues, reading passages, speaking conversations, and speaking presentations, were very similar to those on the actual AP test. This workbook also has extensive reference material, such as commonly used verbs, idiomatic phrases, conversational phrases, grammar rules, that also help in preparing for the Spanish exam. If your teacher does not use this book as a supplement to the class like my teacher did, I would buy the answer key and the audio CDS seperately to obtain the maximum benefit from this book. If you do the majority of the activities in this book well, you will most likely earn a 4 or 5 on the actual exam! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practice Tests are Great!
I used this review book mostly for its practice tests. I did skim through the review section of the book, but I spent the majority of my time with the practice tests. I love the practice tests on the CD! It has a variety of options and includes 2 entire tests on the CD. Your multiple choice gets graded right after you are done and it explains why their answers are correct. The tests included in the book are also good.
