Editorial Review

Product Description
As a fabrication technology, welding presents a number of technical challenges to the designer, manufacturer, and end-user of the welded structures. Both weld residual stress and distortion can significantly impair the performance and reliability of the welded structures. They must be properly dealt with during design, fabrication, and in-service use of the welded structures.

There have been many significant and exciting developments on the subject in the past ten to fifteen years. Measurement techniques have been improved significantly. More importantly, the development of computational welding mechanics methods has been phenomenal. The progresses in the last decade or so have not only greatly expanded our fundamental understanding of the processes and mechanisms of residual stress and distortion during welding, but also have provided powerful tools to quantitatively determine the detailed residual stress and distortion information for a given welded structure. New techniques for effective residual stress and distortion mitigations and controls have also been applied in different industry sectors.

Processes and Mechanisms of Welding Residual Stress and Distortion provides a comprehensive summary on the developments in the subject. It outlines theoretical treatments on heat transfer, solid mechanics and materials behavior that are essential for understanding and determining the welding residual stress and distortion. The approaches for computational methods and analysis methodology are described so that non specialists can follow them. There are chapters devoted to the discussion of various techniques for control and mitigation of residual stress and distortion, and residual stress and distortion results for various typical welded structures are provided. The second half of the book looks at case studies and practical solutions and provides insights into the techniques, challenges, limitations and future trends of each application.

This book will not only be useful for advanced analysis of the subject, but also provide sufficient examples and practical solutions for welding engineers. With a panel of leading experts this authoritative book will be a valuable resource for welding engineers and designers as well as academics working in the fields of structural and mechanical engineering. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very important and useful book
This book details the graphical system developed by the Welding Institute to prevent hydrogen cracking. The system is based upon the determination of the carbon equivalent (CE) via equations that are provided. This CE is then used with the hydrogen content introduced during welding to set the horizontal axis of a nomograph. One then draws a line upwards from the appropriate CE value (determined by the CE and H content) until it intersects a line defining preheat level being used. A horizontal line is then drawn from the intersection point of the CE line and preheat line until it hits a line defining the combined plate thickness (which is determined by the part geometry).A vertical line is then down from this intersection point until it hits another horizontal axis at a point which identifies the proper heat input. This system thus allows one to determine the appropriate heat input based upon the CE of the steel, the H level introduced in welding (which is determined by the welding process and variables such as the proper handling of electrodes), the amount of preheat and the part geometry. Data on the Martensite start temperature is provided, as this is required to set some preheat temperatures.Data on hydrogen diffusion is also provided, which is needed to set bake out requirements to eliminate any hydrogen that may be present.British standards are used for the specific steels that are mentioned, so conversion is necessary to apply this data to steels defined by other standards.

This is a very useful book for engineers that are required to determine welding specifications. It is also useful as an adjunct to other welding texts.

2-0 out of 5 stars ...at the end, we have a copy and its still useful.

Unfortunately, the book provides very little practical information on aluminium welding for a metal shop worker. Instead, reader will get to know a substantial info about health and safety issues (for instance on laser cutting) or technologies not necessary used in a vast majority of welding shops. As an example, there is not a mention of what types of degreasing solvents are suitable for aluminium prior to welding, or sections on filled weld design are also rather underdeveloped. If you happen to manage an aluminium welding shop for welding spaceships get a copy, otherwise check your library first to decide if you really need your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner or novice welder...
This is a good book for the beginner or the used-to-be hobbuist welder, wanting more information and education than what they had previously.

I cannot apply my new education yet, because it seems I have to get a higher amperage circuit breaker in my garage to keep the arc welder from tripping it off. ... Read more

Product Description
Computational Welding Mechanics (CWM) provides an important technique for modeling welding processes. Welding simulations are a key tool in improving the design and control of welding processes and the performance of welded components or structures. CWM can be used to model phenomena such as heat generation, thermal stresses, and large plastic deformations of components or structures. It also has a wider application in modeling thermomechanical and microstructural phenomena in metals. This important book reviews the principles, methods, and applications of CWM.

The book begins by discussing the physics of welding before going on to review modeling methods and options as well as validation techniques. It also reviews applications in areas such as fatigue, buckling, and deformation, improved service life of components, and process optimization. Some of the numerical methods described in the book are illustrated using software available form the author that allows you to explore CWM in more depth.

Computational Welding Mechanics will be a standard work for welding engineers and all those researching welding processes and wider thermomechanical and microstructural phenomena in metals. ... Read more
