3-0 out of 5 stars It's OK
The book is useful and a good primer for a beginner like me but I would have liked a little more detail on MIG welding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction or the only book you'll need.
This deceptively short guide has a wealth of information to get you started in the various welding techniques (Oxy/Fuel, ARC, MIG and TIG).It also covers brazing and cutting with Oxy/Fuel and Plasma and touches on fabrication and fit up.Charts are included for common welding and metals information.

Finch starts from an assumption that the reader has little or no knowledge of welding processes and his clear concise text and photographs lead you through in a non-intimidating way.The average handy person, after reading this book, will confidently say "I can do this."

However, it is not intended to be an exhaustive tutorial (for that see Jeffus' Welding: Principles & Applications Welding: Principles and Applications) but for the beginner and home hobby welder this book, the welder of your choice, and a lot of practice may be all you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Welding book out there!
I have Tig,,Mig, Gas welders and a Plasma torch.finding all the info in one place has been a quest up to this book.I had the first edition and this is far improved. If you weld for a hobby or just once in a while, this book gets your memory up to speed in a hurry.Great set up info for jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent !
I love this book.

It covers everything regarding welding.

Mr Finch is very informative.

This is not a book for people that are looking for depth in any specific type of welding, but makes a great effort to provide as much information as possible about all aspects of welding.

I would not recomend this book, for someone that has been welding, and is looking for greater information is a specific field.

I would readily recomend this book to the first timer, or to someone who wants to get back into welding as a hobby, farm, home repair.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got what I wanted
I set out to learn a little about welding. I didn't need an intense course on the matter and just wanted to get some general concepts of the technique. From the first few chapters, I was able to see that the author was knowledgeable about the subject and that the reading was easy to comprehend. For me the book offered more than what I needed from it, so it's worth the 5 stars. ... Read more

Product Description
There are varying levels of automotive skill sets among the automotive enthusiast community. Some people can perform minor maintenance, some can perform major engine overhauls, and some can perform minor paint and detailing work. But to truly round out your skills in mechanical and body or chassis repair and restoration, sooner or later you will run into a project that requires welding. Once you have mastered welding, there is very little left that you can't do.
Automotive Welding: A Practical Guide is just the book to get you there. Other welding books vary quite a bit on focus and detail. This book fills the gaps, making it a practical book packed with useful information on the types of projects that a self-trained welder can complete and that a typical automotive enthusiast would want to undertake.
Covers the kinds of welding and metalworking available or commonly used, the tools required to perform welding tasks, the different types of welders available, basic welding techniques, grinding and cutting, various forms of sheetmetal work, frame repair and reinforcement, filling body holes and rust repair, tube-steel projects, and more.
With restoration and repair work costing a small fortune these days for frame, floor pan, and structural body repair, Automotive Welding: A Practical Guide can save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on your repair or restoration project. If you have a pending restoration project, are considering tackling or acquiring a new project, want to restore a muscle car, build a hot rod or a rat rod on a budget, or simply want to improve your automotive skills, Automotive Welding: A Practical Guide will pay for itself many times over. No shop library would be complete without it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars solid intro
This book is a great intro to automotive welding. It wasn't as useful for me personally because I was looking for a heavy emphasis on learning mig welding skills which it does cover but I wanted more. The book has lots of useful tips and info for the welding newbie and I can Only say that I wish I had had this book years ago. Worth the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok for beginner framers
this book is great for beginner welders not for more advanced welders.this book just teaches you how to tack weld frames and pannels.when i first bought this book i thought it was going to teach you how to weld busted frames or quator pannels.but this book teaches you what not to do to a frame or pannel not how to weld a frame or pannel from scratch good for beginners but not for advanced people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers all the basics for amateurs using inexpensive or rented tools and little experience
Automotive Welding: A Practical Guide is a 'must' for any library strong on shop or automotive repair. It covers all the basics for amateurs using inexpensive or rented tools and little experience, offering common auto metalwork projects form repairing a cracked manifold to fabricating a roll bar. While the projects relate to real-world experience, their sum allows for an actual complete 'course' in all the different auto welding options, making this a top recommendation for all kinds of libraries.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful book
As a beginner, this book is written on a pretty basic and easy to understand level. It goes through specific projects and suggests practice projects to make you even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Welding Book a Winner
This practical guide to welding has been very helpful to a 2 year welding novice. Its easy to go to the class at the community college and work on my cars. They have the welders all set for me and others to use. But I really didn't understand the hows and the whys. Now I understand what makes a good weld and how to get good results each time.
This guide has also given me the confidence to start working with a TIG set-up and to also learn how to do aluminum welding.
Thanks for writing a solid easy to read manual. Highly recommending this to my friends in my "Bubba Ring" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars text book
I needed this book for a welding class I'm taking in Sept. This book was recommended to me by the head of the welding dept. as one to keep forever. He suggested saving money and buying Edition 6 online.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious about welding
As far as I can find, this is currently the primary reference book about welding. A beginner or do-it-yourself welder (like yours truly) needs little else to get started. It is lavishly illustrated and referenced and has all of the information one needs to understand what welding is about and how to make great welds. Although this field enjoys rapid progress and significant technological development on an almost daily basis, the book has mostly up to date information as of 2010.

I have good quality AC/DC/Pulse MMA, MIG and TIG equipment and have used it very successfully over the last couple of years, even though I have only a minimum of formal training (2 semesters of 2 hours a week in a metalwork shop to make us into "real" engineers! Three decades ago!). I can testify to the value of this book in making full use of this fairly complex equipment, which requires significant investment of time and money. It presents not just dry technical data but also the experience and insight of a master welder in easily digestible form as well as the many tricks and tips needed to master a difficult manual art. I cannot comment on how useful it would be in a classroom setting but I found the questions and exercises to be quite handy for setting up the equipment and testing myself in the basic skills needed.

The book is also very enjoyable and for those who are interested in this field it can provide hours and hours of entertainment. The writing is clear and precise and the layout and graphics are gorgeous. There are reams and reams of historical and anecdotal information and I would have no hesitation in placing this in a "waiting room" or "coffee table book" situation as a general good read.

The one quibble I have is that the book is very USA-centric, as of course it has to be give the background of the author and the intended audience. It does however provide full metric conversions for all important values and most tables have metric columns as well as the imperial units the author is obviously used to. So this quibble should not stop potential readers from acquiring this valuable, interesting and useful book especially as at the moment one cannot find anything even approaching it in depth and quality from SI Unit countries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference Book I will use for a long time to Come!
This particular book is the text in the welding courses I have been taking this year.I wanted my own copy since the school does not let the books leave the classroom.I was impressed with the book already and wanted one of my own and found it here in the used section.Got the book for about half the price of a new one and the one I got looks like it was never opened.I have learned a lot from this book and will keep it as a reference as I progress to my welding projects.I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about welding or already knows how to weld but needs a reference book.We can't all keep the entire contents of this book in our heads. When memory fails, it's in this book.About the only thing that isn't covered in here is underwater welding procedures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A+++++++
Ordered a Welding book for my son, we recieved it in record time! and although it was used looked absolutely brand new. Cost, cheaper than we could find it anywhere else.First time we'd ever ordered like this before, and this will be the first place we come back to when looking for books that he or we may need or want. Will be reccomending this site to many. Thank You. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for serious amature on up
This book may not be ideal for a complete novice. However, it should be the second and maybe last book you will ever need at any level. If you are serious enough to want a book to expand your amature knowledge, or a reference for an experienced welder, this is it. I'm not saying you can't learn to weld starting from this book--you could. It goes into great detail on selecting equipment, setting it up and operating it. What a beginner might want, that is not here, are lots of pictures of good welds vs. bad welds. But if you know enough to know you need to improve, or if you are an experienced welder, this book will help you in several ways.

*It covers almost ANY kind of welding you would ever run across, including but certainly not limited to: gas welds, cutting and brazing; stick, TIG, and MIG; plasma; spot welding; machine and automated welding, etc.

*Comprehensive list of charts for setting up and using every kind of equipment and for various base metals, thicknesses, fillers metals, etc.

*"How to" techniques for proper manipulation of every kind of equipment presented.

*Detailed theory on why things happen in each technique being taught allow you to think for yourself when needed, rather than monkey-see-monkey-do presentation. You will make informed decisions on what to use and how to use it for the best result in most any situation.

The presentations are not over-your-head complicated, yet they include most anything an advancing or skilled welder would want to know. I was impressed with the balance.

The book is comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand. As a hands-on property manager often called upon to weld throughout my life, this book gives me complete confidence in what I am doing. I use it to teach my guys who have never welded, and they can refer to it before each job. I doubt I will ever buy another welding book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I can weld - I'm not the best welder, but my welds are solid
What can I say, Now I can weld - I'm not the best welder, but my welds are solid.
I inherited an oxyacetlene set with all sorts of hoses, gauges, tips and valves.
The book covered the basics and when I had questions, it had answers.
If one of my kids wants to know about welding, Ill buy another copy for them. This one's mine.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good supliment to other books
There are all sorts of books on the same subject that do not sell for much. Buy all you can aford. It is always good to have several books on hand on the same subject. In other words you may not understand one, but you may understand another. Its like having several teachers you can talk to on the same subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amateur Welder
The book was excellent. It was in very good shape. It looked hardly used. The delivery time was extremely slow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Looking for something more...
Guess I am cynical.I just got through writing a review of Finch's welding manual and I still don't have anything great to say about the Haynes Manual.

The Haynes manual is probably better than the Finch book.It gets into a little more detail with the processes and provides useful insight into thing.Shows defective welds etc.

Again, I'd recommend going to one of the welder manufacturer sites like Hobart, Miller or Lincoln and buying a learning set on the process you want to master.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book.
Like the rest of Haynes' manuals, concise and to the point. Well written and good layout as well. As noted above by others, it's divided off into chapters each covers first the history and theory behind the various types of welding, and then a general walk-through of the use. It covers the basics from someone who's walking into welding cold (er, bad pun, sorry) not necessarily a handbook for a welding student. In its defense, this is admitted within its pages. Still i found it to be a useful addition to my shop library. It was interesting reading, as well as a good primer for someone who is looking into starting up a welding rig.If you think you're ready to buy your first welder, i recommend you take a look at this. Well worth the couple of bucks. One last point, as with all technical books, keep an eye out for the newest editions. Advancements are always making tech manuals slightly out of date. Not a real big concern as far as welding, but something to keep an eye on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great teacher
The negative side: Yesis that, the book is written in the first person so it is a little distracting, but I guess the editor thought that the reader would relate better to the author having done it, rather than reading a sterile technical book. The book was originally suposed to be over 450 pages, but it was edited down considerably, by a transmission mechanic. It was also edited and made ready to publish, by an outside company that specialized in making books look nice. The parent publisher in New York City, did not know what welding was used for! For the readers who would prefer a 1,000 page technical book, contact the American Welding Society publications dept. It seems that a couple of the previous reviewers have a grudge or are simply jealous! A couple of reviewers have made some really negative reviews of this book , but a couple of points in the interest of giving the other side of the story. The Federal Aviation Administration has incorportated most of it's Standard Repair Manual AC-43-13a& b, welding chapter, from Welder's Handbook. Also, the Experimental Aircraft Association has stocked this book in its museum book store for more than 10 years. Sears Roebuck, Home Depot and Lowe's stores sell this book in their welding machine section, exclusively. About 1 million copies have been sold to date, including the first edition. That is a lot more than any other welding book on the market now. This book is also the #1 textbook for many trade schools, colleges, high schools, and technical schools. It is a good book for covering all the welding processes in just 176 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welder's Handbook
This is a very good book on welding, touching on much of the types and techniques used in welding, well worth the cost and much more, for so much information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I am a hobbyist and have some knowledge in different welding processes. This book helped me to find out where I was going wrong in a lot of areas. The book contains a lot of very helpful information in all the various processes. Well worth reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars weak at best
I think the book spends a lot of time telling what the author has accomplished as a welder, and little time talking about how to weld.Spare me the self-promotion and fill those pages with real information

5-0 out of 5 stars Performance Welding Handbook
This book came as promised, in like new condition. The book itself does not live up to its advertised claims I read on the internet. It does talk about and have photos of welding, but actually has very little useful information for someone trying to learn more about how to weld.

5-0 out of 5 stars Performance Welding Handbook by Richard Finch
This was a well written book for someone with limited welding experience. The book contains a lot of very helpful information on MIG, Tig, and Gas welding as well as Plasma cutting. It is written in an easy to understand manner and gives the pros and cons for the different processes. It also tells you how to do some of the difficult processes. I found the book very informative and well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
I got this book for my husband who recently purchased a tig welder and needed a crash course in the basics of welding metals like aluminum and stainless steel. He really likes the book and found quite a bit of useful information. Some of the safety info was very much appreciated and it is easy to read. Good book for anyone needing a little direction.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not always accurate
Even though the book on Performance Welding was very informative, it was not entirely accurate.Since he spent a lot of time telling us how most welding books are based on old information, he should have been more careful to be completely accurate. He tells us that Chromoly (4130)tubing cannot be bronze brazed. However bronze brazing has been successfully used in the bicycle industry for more than 50 years. You simply have to build a fillet at the joint.Bronze is about 1/6th as strong as the steel, so you need a fillet of bronze about 6 times the thicknes of the steel to get the same strength. The reason most welders don't know this is because MIG and TIG welding are faster and more commonly used for this type of welding.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thin on details
It's decent advice but it's very much an overview not a step by step how-to, it's worth reading as what it is but it will not teach you to weld, no book can do that.

Let me sum this book up for you: Make sure your pieces fit together tightly, make sure they are super clean, shop local if you can, buy brand names, go to tent sales, buy high end equipment if you can or used if you can't afford new, TIG welding is the best option, get a TIG welder that supports square wave and lots of adjustability made by a major brand name, practice on scrap, and ask lots of questions at your local welding supply dealer.

There are lots of pictures of good aircraft welds but not a whole lot of detail on doing them, very few diagrams or charts but lots of pictures of tubes welded together by different methods.

The book assumes you already know how to weld at times and assumes you don't at others. I think the author knows full well what the book is and what he wrote and would agree it can't teach you to weld, you actually have to get a welder and some scrap metal and just try it.

Let me make the author's main point again, if you're not doing high volume production welding you should probably use a TIG welder. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Service
This was a used text book for a college class. It was in good condition, as described. It arrived in a timely manner and saved us about a $100.00!!This is the place to buy textbooks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely ComprehensiveWelding Reference
This is not your typical welding book.It is exceptional.I have maybe 20 books on welding, but to keep only one book, this one would be the hands down choice. It is the most complete treatment of combining metals I have seen in one volume. However, if you are only interested in OA, SMAW or GMAW for example, maybe half of the book would be of little interest. This book covers the gamut of welding technoligies in surprising detail.Every welding method is discussed with sections also on brazing and soldering.
What I liked most were the numerous photographs that accompany the discussion of each technology. They help make understanding fast and clear when combined with well written text. This is one of those rare welding books you can actually read without getting bored with either too much theory or rambling discussions of things not explained well.
The information is there. I also liked the internal cutout views and descriptions of the equipment. It helps you understand the process much better when you understand both the equipment and the metals.
'How-to' and 'What you did wrong' discussions are included for the core manual welding technoligies.Sections about 'designing for welding', 'distortion', 'failure analysis' 'repair', 'inspection' and 'heat forming and straightening' were interesting to me.
This book is for someone who wants more information than is normally found in the average book on welding. It is authoritative. It is a valuable reference for the welding professional or student. ... Read more

Quick delivery. Quality product. Good source of information. Highly technical. I am a satisfied customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars First rate textbook and resource for practicing engineers
This is an excellent text and sourcebook for practicing engineers. While not a handbook, this book contains a lot of useful data, however, its primary value is as text that gives general guidance and explains why the alloys behave as they do.The authors of this book are world leaders in the subject matter, and as expected, they have produced a first-rate book. The book begins with three chapters, which concisely describe the metallurgy of stainless steels, followed by five chapters that discus the welding of the different types of stainless steels (i.e., Austenitic, Ferritic, Martensitic, Duplex and Precipitation Hardened stainless steels). The final two chapters discuss the welding of dissimilar steels and weldability testing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well prepared up to date book on stainless steels and their welding metall. and weldability
For me, this is the best up to date review book on stainless steels and especially about their welding metallurgy and weldability. The metallurgic mechanisms and the effects on weldability are very well explained. A wide range of technical people including students can use and understand the book easily. I have been reading Dr. Kotecki's Q&A part and Lippold's articles in Welding Journal for more than ten years, so have gathered some data from these parts of them also made me appreciate them. I guess there couldn't have been a better book nowadays about weldability of SSs also. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well rounded book
This book describes things very well and covers a wide range of welding topics that most should be able to see a benefit from.Soo, I recommend it for a wide range of people!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good read or for those just starting
The question and answer style of this book doesn't make it easy to read. There is too much stop and go and makes this book annoying. Also, the pictures don't exactly diagram welding techniques. If you are a beginner you should probably get something else.I returned this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for basic welding processes understanding
Purchased this book to prepare for my CWI certification. This is an excellent resource to understand the basic welding processes, advantage, disadvantages of each, along with safety discussions
I would highly recommend this book as 'required' reading for anyone just interested in basic welding processes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Q&A format for info
Having 10 or so books on welding text book type and the others. Most bog you down with a lot of info that you will never need if you are an artists/hobbyist or even a certified daily working welder. And they all seem to lack the info that comes up from time to time that we all need.

It is in a question and answer format that covers what is the most asked questions on safety, general welding of most types, as the contents page lists. With out all the theory and mumbo jumbo the text books put in.
In its 500 plus pages it has a great glossary with clear to the point definitions. Good clear illustrations. And a simple to understand safety info. Some fun stuff, ok I'm an fact geek for off beat info. Like what do all those numbers mean stamped on the neck are of the tanks etc.

The Second edition does have updated info. Along with a survey of other welding methods. And chapters on subjects of interest to a person doing art/hobbyist or occasional welding. But could prove useful to a daily welder as a handy reference guide.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good beginners book
Pretty good beginner level information in this book.I like the focus on OxyAcetylene, because I feel every new welder should know OAW before other processes. The book has a good amount of illustrations in it, which I think are important for beginners.A lot that you do in welding and cutting with gas relies a lot on sights and sounds as you're doing it.For instance, you need to be able to see & recognize what the metal looks like when it is time to start moving the torch to create your weld or when it is time to add oxygen to your flame to begin a cut. Unfortunately, I don't think they did a good enough job with the illustrations in this book.A black & whitepiece of line art is only marginally better than nothing at all, in my opinion. Replace these illustrations with photographs and I'd give this book 5 stars.

Keep in mind, this is a beginner's book and really aimed mostly at hobbyists, not someone looking to make it a career (at least in the short term)

1-0 out of 5 stars Sub-beginner
This book is probably best suited for a junior high school beginning level reader.
It is incredibly overpriced for such little information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welding
A very good book on torch welding, easy to understand and well written, I recommend it to anyone wanting the knowledge, well covered in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Welding Instruction
