Product Description
Flexible Urban Transportation is a sweeping reassessment of American highway and transit policy. For the last half-century, this policy has been fixated on planning, designing and constructing the Interstate highway system, and then coping with the creative destruction it wrought.

Aggressive construction of the Interstate divided and destroyed urban communities, and sparked a furious backlash, the "Freeway Revolt". The Interstate also facilitated widespread suburbanization of housing, retail and employment, which in turn gave rise to the tightly integrated, flexible supply chains characteristic of modern industry. American society faces a profound dilemma. The private automobile has never been more popular. The economy depends on highways. But communities are increasingly unwilling to build or expand them.

Making transportation choices with a clear understanding of their consequences - protecting communities, fostering environmental stewardship, and supporting a dynamic and productive economy - is an urgent matter. But the regulations and procedures that govern those choices are severely outdated. And the interests vested in the current stalemate block the way towards serious reform.

This cogent evaluation of how American transportation planning got to where it is today, and its proposal for an adaptive transportation decision-making process, is required reading for those concerned about the problems and prospects of transportation today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maglev, Superconductors , 267 mph , levitating transportation
1. Claims about the promise of hydrogen are more hype than hope.
2. The hydrogen economy rests on two pillars: a pollution free source for hydrogen and a device for converting hydrogen into useful energy without generating pollution.
3. The Sure Power offers uninterruptible power supplies, batteries and standby diesel generator for corporate data centers as supply back-up power in case of grid power outage.First National Bank was the first to install the most reliable power source combining fuel cells with other advanced energy and electronic devices. The Sure power system had less than 1 percent chance of failure verses 63 percent over 20 year failure chance by traditional methods.
4. John Bockris said, "hydrogen economy means that hydrogen would be used to transport energy from renewable over large distances; and to store it in large amounts."Our cars, our homes, our industries would be powered by non polluting fuels.Hydrogen production from renewables must drop in price and US energy policies must allow competition to decrease price.
5. Fueling cars from natural gas makes no sense, either economically or environmentally.
6. Most companies are conservative about purchasing and deploying new technologies.A small number of companies are first adopters, the vast majority only buy after the commodity has a proven track record and a very rapid payback.
7.In cities big and small, too many vehicles in too little space has led to traffic congestion, a problem that cannot be resolved simply by building more highways.
8. Public transportation system can conserve energy and space and strengthen city centers by connecting people from rural areas and those with limited mobility to the culture and opportunities available in the city.
9. Why did the railroad industry abandon its commuter rail service in the 1950s?The key challenge of urban transportation system is congestion, too many vehicles in too little space.Congestion is linked to urbanization which concentrates people and activities and industrialization separating specialized activities at home and work.In the 1950s the rail road abandon commuter services for reasons of lacking profit.American's love for cars, consumption of gas (1.4 billion gallons a year), freedom of movement, and valuation of time efficiency (auto transportation reduced commute time) caused migration from mass transportation to individual auto transportation. City government lobbied the federal government to support mass transit in urban areas.
10. Why is public transit more essential to urban health and welfare in the 21st century?Cities are where the talent, ideas, and opportunities reside. Systems for eliminating congestion need to be designed and build allowing trains, buses, planes, automobiles to reliably transport their commerce without congestion.Age, income, or health should not be a barrier for the transportation requirements, mobility for all citizens. The system must reduce the cost per trip, reduce the need for parking space, and be high accessible.City center survival depends on efficient public transit systems.
11. As gasoline prices rise, Americans do not shift to public transit, they buy more thrift, fuel efficient vehicles. Image a high speed, Human transport Segway vehicle moving through vast gas tubes along a computer controlled series of tubes high above the ground. The vision described in "Caves of Steele" may still become a reality.
12. Light rail initiatives are popular because individuals are deconcentrated from centralized employment centers.Hundred's of millions of dollars are spent on light rail which are expensive and inflexible. The fact remains that there are not enough roads, commute time has increased from 22 to 26 minutes and workers commute on the average 45 minutes.Road congestion produces an extra $520 in extra annual per capita costs in the nation's 75 largest metro areas.
13. Car make possible work choices and life opportunities.Individual want to be able to pick up their kids, go to church, and shop when and where they choose.
14. In Texas, the NAFTA Super Highway is being sold as the Trans Texas Corridor.TTC-35 is parallel to the present Interstate Highway 35 (I-35), slightly to the east, running north from Mexico to Canada. Its present scope is 4,000 miles long and 1,200 feet wide, with an estimated cost of $183 billion. The Security and Prosperity partnership of North America designed too align a North American Union reducing boundaries barriers to commerce and free trade among neighbor nations.Opponents fear the establishment a dictatorial regional government similar too the European Union and the removal of borders and the establishment of a joint perimeter around all three countries.
President Bush states, the main purpose is to speed the delivery of manufactured products into the United States from Canada and Mexico.
15. NAFTA super highway: TTC-69 is designed too enter Texas from Mexico as three spur lines at Laredo, McAllen, and Brownsville and then join and head to Houston, to Memphis, Tennessee, to Port Huron, Michigan, to Toronto, Canada. To the west of TTC-69 is a proposed route running from Laredo through West Texas, the Oklahoma Pan Handle, to Denver, and ultimately to Canada.CANAMEX spans West from Mexico to Canada going through Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, and Montana streamlining the moving of travelers and cargo across shared borders.
16. The expense of maglev trains will soon be overcome by newer and simpler designs.More maglev system are being built today.Critics of maglev is high cost and proponents say the costs are comparable with new motorways.Maglev works by magnets that push and pull the train, at a given point in time. The gap between the vehicle and the guide way is continuously monitored, and the current in the electromagnets continuously adjusted on a time scale in the thousandths of a second. The magnitude of the gap is small, about 10 mm. Superconducting maglev operate with a larger vehicle to guide way gap of 100 - 150 mm. ... Read more

Product Description
The impact of United States jurisprudence on air carrier liability involving international air transportation has been so great over many decades that it is not unreasonable to conceive of that body of jurisprudence as the principal source for the interpretation and application of the uniform rules relating to air carrier liability in the international transportation by air of passengers, baggage and cargo, as envisioned by the original drafters of the Warsaw Convention of 1929. Hence, an in-depth analysis of this body of jurisprudence, such as is presented in this indispensable book, constitutes, for all practical purposes, the preeminent treatise on international air transportation liability - all the more so, in that the drafters of the 1999 Montreal Convention (MC99) were determined not to erode in any way this established body of Warsaw Convention jurisprudence when interpreting and applying the 1999 successor instrument, MC99. George Tompkins, a leading authority with world wide recognition on the interpretation and application of international private air law agreements, - and himself among the drafters of MC99 - here lays out the rich fruit of his vast personal experience in handling cases and controversies in the Courts of the United States involving the application of the liability rules of the Warsaw Convention and now MC99. The resulting publication is an essential legal guide for determining and resolving claims governed by one or more of the international law instruments that comprise the Warsaw Liability System, which consists of the 1929 Warsaw Convention, the 1955 Hague Protocol, the 1961 Guadalajara Convention, the 1975 Montreal Protocol No. 4 and various intercarrier agreements (applicable only to claims involving passenger death or bodily injury governed by the Warsaw Convention) all now superseded and governed by MC99. Among the multitude of topics covered in depth, users of this book will find the following: When the liability rules of MC99 or one of the predecessor Warsaw Liability System instruments is applicable to a claim; What triggers liability under the applicable instrument; Who can make a claim against the air carrier; Who can file a legal action for damages; Where the action must be brought--Jurisdiction; When the action must be brought-Limitations period; What law applies in determining the recoverable damages; Limitations on recoverable damages; The accepted definitions of key terms in the Convention Rules, such as carrierA", accidentA", bodily injuryA", operations of embarking disembarkingA", destinationA"; The treatment of mental injury claims; Liability for delay; Defenses available to the carrier; Willful misconduct of the carrier. The author explains the required particulars for establishing the liability of the air carrier in detail under a wide variety of circumstances, and clearly defines all terms - especially such contentious terms as 'willful misconduct,' 'accident', 'bodily injury', 'embarking', 'disembarking' 'destination' - as their applicability varies under successive conventions and protocols as interpreted and applied in years of court decisions. As a thorough summary and critique of the interpretation and application of the 70-year body of Warsaw Convention jurisprudence, this unmatched publication provides a convenient one-volume basis for the development of a body of MC99 jurisprudence. It also is an incomparable practical guide for the use and benefit of everyone involved in the practice or study of international private air law, including lawyers, airline in-house counsel, international aviation organizations, aviation liability insurers and re-insurers, aviation insurance brokers, aviation-related departments of national governments, judges, law clerks, students and teachers. ... Product Description
About the Book--
Since deregulation in 1978, airlines have undergone profound changes. And, much has changed since the first edition of this book was published in 1997. In the first decade of the New Millennium, the airlines are in dire straits and stuggling to recover from the worst economic crisis in their entire history. The trauma was brought on by a series of setbacks that began with airline deregulation, followed by a rash of consumer complaints and safety concers, constrained airport capacity resulting in inordinate traffic delays, economic recessions and spikes in oil prices, two wars in the Middle East, and topped off by acts of terrorism around the world and a system now constrained by heightened alert and enhanced security procedures.
Legacy airlines are facing the possibility of extinction unless they can successfully reorganize to combat a proliferation of low-cost carreirs. Yet the new, low-cost point-to-point model is only a partial answer. As described in this book, the emerging air transportation system is evolving into six principal market niches. Airports, too, are evolving to conform to the carriers that use them. Likewise, the countervailing forces driving the production of aircraft into the future are frequency versus capacity, speed versus efficiency and safety, customer service and cost. Which of these alternatives to pursue is at the heart of the strategic struggle for dominance between Airbus and Boeing.
This book is a companion volume in an Air Transport Series, comprised of Air Transportation: Foundations for the 21st Centruy, 2nd ed. and Airline Management: Stategies for the 21st Century, 2nd ed. It is the purpose of this series to acquaint the reader with the principal elements of air transportation hsitory, airline economics, business, finance, marketing, regulation, and management--to bring all the essential elements of commercial aviation within the two-volume series. ... Product Description
As the field of transportation moves toward the "total quality management" paradigm, performance-based outcomes and quantitative measures have become increasingly important. Measuring performance in the field depends heavily on modeling trends and data, which in turn requires powerful, and flexible analytical tools. To date, however, transportation professionals have lacked a unified, rigorous guide to modeling the wide range of problems they encounter in the field. Statistical and Econometric Methods for Transportation Data describes the techniques most useful for modeling the many complex aspects of transportation, such as travel demand, safety, emissions, and the environment. Taking care not to overwhelm readers with statistical theory, the authors clearly and concisely present the relevant analytical methods in quantitative chapters built on transportation case studies. Mastering this material enables readers to:·Formulate research hypotheses·Identify appropriate statistical and econometric models·Avoid common pitfalls and misapplications of statistical methods·Interpret model results correctlyIdeal as both a textbook and reference, this book makes three unique contributions to transportation practice and education. First, it presents a host of analytical techniques-both common and sophisticated-used to model transportation phenomena. Second, it provides a wealth of examples and case studies, and third, it specifically targets present and future transportation professionals. It builds the foundation they need not only to apply analytical models but also to understand and interpret results published elsewhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you take the afternoon Transpo for Civil PE Exam
The Six-Minute Solutions guides are great, especially when preparing for the afternoon portion of the Civil PE exam. Yes, the questions are generally tougher than what you will see on the exam; that's why they are good practice. These questions are in-line with what you can expect on the exam, however the questions are a little more challenging and usually require a few more steps to get to the answer. You wouldn't want an overly easy practice exam and then get slammed on the real exam.

These guides are split up into morning type questions and afternoon type questions. I found that these guides were great preparation for the PE exam. The solutions are detailed enough to follow along and catch your mistakes. The solutions provided are way better approaches to answering the questions than any of the Lindeburg references, and they have fewer mistakes than Lindeburg. Some of the solutions to the Lindeburg guides are just outright wrong. The best guide for practice questions is the NCEES practice exam, but these are a wonderful supplement.

I highly recommend getting the Six-Minute Solutions guide for whichever afternoon session you plan to take. I did take the Transpo afternoon option, and between this guide and the NCEES practice exam, I felt that I was well prepared for what was on the exam.As you are studying, make sure you have and use your references that you plan to take to the exam. You may find that the base equation you look up to solve the problem is in a different format that what this guide provides.

Your most basic study library should include the Lindeburg Civil Engineering Reference Manual, the NCEES Practice Exam, and the Six Minute Solutions guide for your afternoon session. Don't forget to round up your afternoon required references (check the NCEES website as these do change over time), too.The most helpful (in order of helpfulness) were the AASHTO Green Book, Highway Capacity Manual, AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, MUTCD, and a traffic text book.Yes, you can take these guides into the exam room, but you probably won't find them much use that late in the game.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Problems for studying
I thought this book was great. The problems were realistic to the length of test problems and the solutions were straight forward and easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect prep!
Helped me pass... on my 2nd try... but still a very VERY useful way to study!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide
This was a great book, I really liked that it included in the solutions where to find the charts and equations that you need in other reference books like the AASHTO Green Book and The HCM.It really helped me prepare for the PE Exam. Some of the questions might be a little more difficult then the test itself, but at least I was prepared for everything.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only purpose is to scare you.
I took a review class and did lots of practice problems on the Transportation area of emphasis. This book was bought to see if I was ready for the test. I could hardly answer any of the questions! They were all very tricky. It made me wonder if I'd have a snowball's chance on the test.

Well the test was much easier than 90% of the questions in this book (as another reviewer sort of noted). I certainly wouldn't try to use this as a study guide as it only "teaches" its own twisted questions. I would give this book away now the test is behind me, but no one would benefit from it, it would probably only frighten you! In general its meant to sell to panic-y test takers like me who want to cover all the bases. ... Read more

From the onset of my reading "Selecting Warehouse Software from WMS & ERP Providers" it proved to be everything and far more than I could have ever begin to appreciate. But, when I became armed with the companion work Supply Chain Terminology, I was empowered to understand the language of the industry. Hence, intuition fueled by grasping the concepts with added clarity allowed for our project to advance in a far more professional and efficient manner; discussions amongst team members was enhanced and leadership could be more effectively provided. We are now positioned to accomplish what many other reputed multi-million dollar enterprise have not been able to achieve in its supply chain software solutions, because we have an executive staff who has invested the time and have had the good fortune of sound advice and business practices from the Philip Obal series of reading materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to my library
The terminology in this industry seems endless. So it's great to have something for reference when unfamiliar terms or phrases are brought into conversation. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to gain familiarity with the buzzwords of the industry. It seems like a perfect tool for college graduates who don't want to be caught off guard in a job interview. And it also is great for someone like me, who's been in the business for a while.Easy read.

Sincerely,
Rick Howard

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful to both new & experienced practitioners
The glossary is very comprehensive, and helpful both to people new to the industry as well as those who have been in it for several years.Hard to think of any other place where one could find a compilation so comprehensive. Great reference manual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Current, and Very Handy
I have found Mr. Obal's Glossary of Supply Chain Terminology invaluable in keeping current and specific with the constantly changing Supply Chain lingo.

It is as concise and current as any reference book on this subject that I have seen.I find the EDI Code definitions particularly helpful.

Very highly recommended especially for logistics professionals who must communicate across companies, industries, stages, and modes in the supply chain. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is not a book its a Pamphlet for esri
Don't buy this book unless you want to be overwhelmed by pr for ESRI about projects they have done. Its a snooze.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ask for a free sales brochure...
This book showcases many examples of how GIS can be applied in the field of transportation using ArcView GIS, but it doesn't come with any theory. As such, it is more like an overpriced sales brochure and not a textbook. Nevertheless, the examples are really neat and should inspire any practitioner in the field.

3-0 out of 5 stars Superficial case studies
This book looks at GIS-based applications implemented for various transportation agencies around the US, and one in Korea. It is published by ESRI press, so every example uses ArcGIS & friends. Each chapter begins with a paragraph or two about the agency and the problems it's trying to solve using GIS. Each page has a screenshot with accompanying text that merely describes the screenshot in a fairly superficial way. The kind of generic commentary is typified here: "Using ESRI's ArcView application, the transportation manager can click on icons and review the date of reported accidents."

That really just describes to me how someone uses the software, where I had been hoping for a more high-level, deeper analysis with specific examples. From a production standpoint, this book is fairly poor. Some of the screenshots are of poor quality (e.g., they didn't even bother setting the character encoding properly for the Korean shots, so some of the characters show up as garbled). There's a lot of wasted whitespace, and the pages started to fall out as I reached the end of the book (brittle binding, I guess).

This book will be useful for managers wondering if GIS could help them, who are looking for situations where others have found this to be the case. I don't think it will necessarily give them much understanding of exactly HOW useful it might be or why. Certainly, this will not be of much use to GIS users, in my opinion, since it relatively thin on specifics. ... Read more
