3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for a novice soils engineer
Reasonably well rounded book (at a reasonably good price!) illustrating the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. Concepts are explained in good detail and solved problems are helpful in promoting understanding. Essentially, a good book to start out your tech library, but too general in nature to be considered for a "reference text". For that, you might rely on books by Terzaghi, Peck, Thornburn, Bowles, Fang, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the PE
I took this book in with me for the PE exam and it helped me get about 10 problems right. There are tons of examples and problems with solutions in this book.I regret not taking the geotechnical section of the PE exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
What divergent opinions !!Naturally I think the book is loaded with practical geotechnical information, including tons of solved problems.Give the book a chance and decide for yourself. Many thanks to my supporters....

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money!
The book is too oriented to domestic US soils, and the aproach is superficial and over-simplified. The amount of useful information is less than 5% of the huge size of the volume. Really a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I have examined the book and find it to be an excellent book for learning the practical aspects of geotechnical engineering. The author is uptodateand thorough, yet he explains in a very down-to-earth style, by photographsand numerical examples, some very real engineering problems a geotechnicalengineer is likely to face in practice. ... Product Description
Waste tyres could be utilized as partial replacement in order to preserve natural resources such as sand and to prevent the environment from further damage due to improper disposal of the tyres. In response to these demands, three series of investigations were conducted in this project. For Part I, the laboratory trials were conducted to study the correlation between rubberized concrete paving blocks (RCPB) mixtures. Part II was carried out to investigate the manufacturing processes and the feasibility of producing RCPB in a commercial plant setting. In Part III of this study, Highway Accelerated Loading Instrument (HALI) was developed. RCPB pavement was tested with HALI and subjected to 10,000 cycles of load repetition. Results obtained from three-dimensional models showed control concrete paving blocks (CCPB) tend to yield slightly better than other types of RCPB. Despite better skid resistance and interlocking force of CCPB, the other types of RCPB containing crumb rubber showed a great improvement in toughness. Therefore, all types of RCPB can be introduced to various types of pavement according to the traffic volume and the application of the pavement. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars McCormac Structural Analysis
He does not provide enough examples or detail in the solutions to the examples. He leaves out moments by parts and does not detail the sections sufficiently. The Leet text is better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible.
This is a horrible text for structural analysis. It isn't easy to understand, the examples are terrible, the problems at the end of the chapter are hard to understand, and the solution manual has errors everywhere. This is an all around bad book. I hate to say it but it's true.

1-0 out of 5 stars No good
This is a very poor text for structural analysis. The examples are absolutely terrible. Luckily I have a decent professor who explains what is going on. Also, there are several mistakes throughout the text and I often found myself refering to my Strengths books to help with the shear and moment diagrams, and beam deflection because this book did a horrible job explaining those topics. I highly recommend you use a supplementary text along with this if you are using this book for a structural class.-M.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good content, but filled with typographical errors
The scope and content of the book is very appropriate for a beginning student in structural dynamics, and the organization is very nice.I think the book strikes a good balance of coverage between civil and mechanical engineering subject matter. However, a serious flaw of the book at least in the first printing (and the only printing as far as I can tell) is the exceptional number of typographical errors it contains. Product Description

Today’s biggest structural engineering challenge is to design better structures, and a key issue is the need to take an integrated approach which balances control of costs with the requirement for handling earthquakes and other dynamic forces. Structural optimization is based on rigorous mathematical formulation and requires computation algorithms for sizing structural elements and synthesizing systems. Now that the right software and enough computing power are readily available, professionals can now develop a suite of alternative designs and a select suitable one.

A thoroughly-written and practical book on structural optimization is long overdue. This solid book comprehensively presents current optimization strategies, illustrated with sufficient examples of the design of elements and systems and presenting descriptions of the process and results. Emphasis is given to dynamic loading, in particular to seismic forces.

Researchers and practising engineers will find this book an excellent reference, and advanced undergraduates or graduate students can use it as a resource for structural optimization design.

Customer Reviews (10)

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay study option
This book provided some additional problems to work while studying for the exam. But there was not enough similarity to the actual exam problems to make it a great study aid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highlights a lot of tricky questions
This exam showed some of the ricky questions that refer to unnoticed exceptions in the codes, and it includes analysis of indeterminate trusses, deflections of complicated beams, etc.It definitely took more than 6 minutes per problem. It brings your attention to certain code tables that help make analysis assumptions. The solutions explain why the other three multiple choice answers are wrong, but typically these are more obvious glaring errors and not that helpful.(Example: "(A) is False because it's not true.")

The steel problems highlight lots of shortcut tables to use in the new AISC steel design manual.I found some of them helpful, and others hindering...Solution 47, for example, would have been faster just calculationg a single-axis P-M interaction equation, though once you get biaxial bending I see where the benefit to learning the table comes in.I also noticed that the steel section refered to something from an AISC manual from about 3 editions ago, which is no longer used (problem 48).That was rather frustrating.Problem 54 gives a complicated answer by suggesting use of Table 4-9, when using Table 4-22 takes seconds instead.

Concrete was very, very useful because it answered questions I hadn't though about much in practice.I did notice problem 64 ignores ACI 11.10.6 in calculating Vc.

For all this book's faults, it still seems more applicable than the 246 Solved Structural Engineering Problems, and is a good start for the SE I review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
6-Minute Solutions has 100 problems that help you become familiar with the concepts that you will be tested on. With very few exceptions, they are not the type of problems that you would find on the PE-Structural I test. However, when you solve these problems you'll find yourself becoming quicker in exam-type problems, which are generally more simple (see NCEES review books).

The book follows SE-I (as of 2009) specifications. Problems are divided into Analysis or Design, and each main category within its own subcategories(lateral, concrete, steel, etc). This helps a lot as well, because as you work the problems you're reviewing one topic at a time, at most two, not jumping from code to code, topic to topic.

I worked all 100 problems once and I feel like I learned a lot from them. However, check with your state licensing board, as you might not be able to bring in this book to the test. It's good for studying but it might not help you as a reference during test time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Same questions as previous edition
The second edition has identical questions as the first edition. The only differences are with answers affected by changes in codes.(Phi factors etc..)Don't waste you're time if you already have a copy of the first edition.Just be aware of what code changes might affect your answers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Well-crafted questions
The problems presented in this book are carefully constructed to illuminate code nuances in the soutions.I give the problems in this book four stars (****).

These are not six-minute solutions; catchy title, it may be.The solutions in this book are often gibberish, with either code errors, mechanics errors, or both. The code errors sometimes reference an obsolete code and sometimes reference inapplicable sections of the code. The mechanics errors appear to be sometimes careless and sometimes the result of non-comprehension.At the same time, I acquired some new techniques, especially with regard to geotechnical soutions.I rate the solutions in this book two stars (**). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to FEA for structures
Over the years, it has been my own experience that most books about finite element analysis do not excel in their ability to teach without undo effort on the part of the reader.Perhaps the same can be said for engineering texts in general. In contrast to this regrettable norm, Dr. Yang's book is a pedagogically sound work that is perfectly suited for undergraduate engineering students, or for those interested in self study.Explanations are resoundingly clear and thorough, as are its many example problems.

From a purely techical point of view, the book really excels in its coverage of higher-order and special-purpose beam elements. These include nonuniform and curved elements, as well as special elements designed to address buckling and large deflection problems. The author skillfully uses several examples to quantify and comparethese different elements with regard to accuracy and efficiency. This information is both interesting and useful. Finally, detailed mass-matrix formulations are provided that enable accurate solutions to free-vibration and other transient problems.

Other element types and formulations are also presented in some detail. These include membrane, plate, tetrahedral, hexahedral and axisymmetric solid, and finally several isoparametric variants. The book is then rounded out nicely with four computer programs:

1)Static analysis of plane truss and plane frame structures.
2)Free-vibration analysis of plane truss and plane frame structures.
3)Static analysis using six-degree-of-freedom triangular plane stress and plane strain finite elements.
4)Static analysis using sixteen-degree-of-freedom rectangular plate finite elements in bending.

Unfortunately, a CDROM was not issued with the book at the time of its publication in the late 1980's.Instead, fortran source code is printed at the end of the book, along with instructions to contact the author for a disk, if necessary.According to Purdue's website, Dr. Yang still teaches as an adjunct professor at its Aerospace Engineering Dept. The following contact number was listed: (765) 494-5117.

Despite the book's modest age (copyright 1986), all its material remains completely relevant. For this reason and those given above, I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Yang's commendable work to those looking for an introductory text - even in the year 2007.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those go-to books.
I was assigned this book in a course taught by one of the authors. The book is great if you can patiently sit down and work through a chapter. Eight years after taking the course I find myself coming back to it for reality checks after using professional analysis programs.

After working for six years, I used this book to study for the SE exam and it helped me infinitely better than review manuals in terms of analysis.I wouldn't rely on this text for code (another reviewer complained about wind loads) but the wind, traffic, and impact load sections are still somewhat helpful. The main point of this book is analysis, and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars I've had worse, but there must be better somewhere
Well frankly I didn't much care for this text. I found the examples to be both sparse and lacking. I was particularly disappointed with the section on wind loading and the section covering the various methods for analyzing indeterminate frames. Both of which I found to be insufficient and confusing. If you are assigned this text, then, I suggest that you either acquire solutions for the unassigned problems (to use as examples) or try to find a supplemental text. On the other hand, this text offers plenty of challenging problems for you to work. If you have already taken the class and know the subject, but wish to hone your engineering skills, then this is a good book to practice with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless
Grammatical and spelling errors coupled with a severe lack of examples make this one of the hardest texts to follow to date in my college career. This has got to be one of the worst textbooks I have ever had the displeasure of having to use in my studies.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not THAT bad, but you can do better
Unfortunately, I have to agree with other two reviews posted above. Every now and again I do refer to the book, but it's certainly not my favourite. I actually checked to see if there's a new edition out because I thought it would contain a lot of corrections. It does cover many topics, that's why I find it useful, but tread carefully.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Textbook
I can't believe how badly written this textbook is.I could find countless mistakes riddled throughout the pages including: missing units, wrong units, spelling mistakes, wrong answers given. In addition, the examples do not clearly show how to go about a certain problem, nor do they explain what equations are used. This textbook should have never been published.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucks !
This is, without a doubt, the WORST text-book I have ever had in school ever! The examples are poorly written and all the numbers just put in the formulas right away so half of my time goes into finding out what formulasare being used, and the other half goes into reading the bad text. Theproblems are many with wrong given answers and well.. that is just typicalbecause the book left me nothing. I would strongly recommend other booksfor subjects this book teaches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book (that I know of) in this category
This is the best book I know of on the topic of structural renovation of buildings.Though probably no book could answer every question you might have, the 800+ pages of this book will answer most of them.

The author, Alexander Newman, is clearly an experienced expert, so this book is authoritative and has a very practical orientation, with a straightforward writing style, both basic and specialized information on a wide variety of topics, and plenty of helpful illustrations of details which can be used on your projects.

I should also add that much of the information in this book is directly relevant to structures other than buildings, so don't miss out on this book if you're involved in renovation of other types of structures.

Highly recommended to anyone involved in structural renovation, and worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Description of the How's and Why's of Renovation
Excellent book and very practical - explains how and why to renovate and discusses the complications and consequences of some renovations. It also discusses whether demolish-and-rebuild should be considered or when to perform complex analyses that may demonstrate that renovation can be avoided.

I admit to being a bit biased. I received this book as part of an ASCE course taught by the author. However the book was supplementary material, not the text of the course, and I learned many additional things by reading the book after the course.

This book covers renovation due to seismic and wind loading, and also as a result of change of use, damage, and deterioration due to age. Steel, concrete, wood, unreinforced masonry, slabs-on-grade, and pre-engineered metal building systems are covered. The book explains testing methods (destructive and non-destructive) and the limitations of, or difficulty in using these methods. It discusses the history and evolution of the different types of construction and how that impacts renovation.

Some topics are explicitly omitted (e.g. post-tensioned slabs-on-grade, bonded post-tensioned structures), and discussion of interior non-structural features is limited to a few pages. Many renovation procedures are fully described, and when the user is referred elsewhere for more detailed information, these references are generally readily available - e.g., ACI specs or AISC Design Guides. Possible negative consequences of various remediation methods are discussed.

Overall this is a thorough and thought-provoking coverage of structural renovation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for structural rehabilitation
I have had to design and manage a number of structural rehabilitations; I wish I would have had this book ten years ago. It is an excellent reference for engineers with both limited and extensive experience in structural retrofitting and rehabilitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Pragmatic Building Restoration Guide -- at Last!
While this text explores renovation of a wide variety of building systems -- reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, wood, steel, masonry -- from a structural engineering perspective, it is quite pragmatically written and a non-engineer will derive considerable benefit from it.The book provides an excellent and detailed guide to critical issues that are confronted in period restoration, including making transparent best practices for undertaking the investigative process to evaluate salvagable components and structures for each type of building system.Filled with well-researched historical data about material types, it also contains excellent reference sections at the end of each chapter. An outstanding resource for those who are serious about building restoration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good ideas for refurbishment
A comprehensive book but with some strange omissions: very little on foundations or restrained brickwork. Also, the section on FRPs looks like it came straight out of a contractor's brochure. But these don't really detract that much. Strongly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good basic review
This is a good review of the basic concepts with some relevant examples. Text books shouldn't be $150 but that is a different issue. You'll want to hang on to this book as a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the better structure books written.
Structural Steel Design (4th Edition)

This book come well recommended for architectural students learning steel design.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MUST HAVE STEEL DESIGN BOOK.
I had the previous version of the book on ASD and loved it during my under-grad. The author has done a magnificent job in combining the ASD and LRFD in the new edition. It is by far my most favorite steel design book and I cannot live without having it in my desk. Examples are clear, it touches all the main topics most importantly it is well organized and easy to follow. The book is worth every penny! Thank you Mccormac!

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive book on steel construction
It has clear cohesive text but it can use a bit more examples. It is comprehensive and I did not see any errors. Overall great book, i benefited so much from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I used the third edition of this book (LRFD) in my undergraduate and I used this edition for my graduate class. It is a great help for me as I am not a steel expert. I like it's simple form and the use of both LRFD and ASD in all examples. ... Read more
