Product Description
The world’s insatiable consumption of energy must be met with new technologies that offer alternative, environmentally conscious sources of light and power. The relatively young field of nonimaging optics is an ideal tool for designing optimized solar energy collectors and illumination optics and holds great promise in the development of solid state lighting applications.

Introduction to Nonimaging Optics provides the first entry-level resource on this rapidly developing field. The book is divided into two sections: the first one deals with nonimaging optics—its main concepts and design methods. The second summarizes general concepts, including rays and wave fronts, reflection and refraction, and symmetry. The author makes a point to relate nonimaging to other popular fields, such as thermodynamics, radiometry, photometry radiation heat transfer and classical mechanics. He also provides useful examples at the end of each chapter.

Introduction to Nonimaging optics invites newcomers to explore a growing field and delivers a comprehensive reference to those already working in optics, illumination engineering or solar energy collection and concentration. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Watching Light Bounce
I was looking for information on how light is reflected by different shapes and surfaces. "Introduction to nonimaging optics" by Julio Chaves provided all that and more as an up-to-date compendium of the most authoritative research in this relatively new/emerging field.

This book provides an exhaustive theoretical exploration of "nonimaging" systems (ie. where there is no object image formed, but there is merely a source of light, an optic to bounce around the light, and a receiver.)

It is difficult to visualize how invisible light bounces around differently configured systems. The book does a remarkably good job depicting many examples of how this happens. The book uses many nicely drawn diagrams and visualizations.

The first section of the book is described as covering main concepts and designs. This is relatively easy reading at a level of high school or entry-level college physics. The second section of the book delves deeper into rays, waves and the appearance of integrals and equations is evident. The second section of the book is a challenging read as it takes the reader well beyond an introduction.

For me, it would be of great practical benefit to see more real world images as well - perhaps photos of systems utilizing these techniques.

I was looking to use mirrors for reflecting and concentrating light in solar energy systems. For my interests, this book provided answers and invaluable assistance in seeing how light bounces around optic systems. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Andrea Modenini
Very good book! It contains a lot of concept about propagation in fiber optic. It's very usefull for people that has just started to study optical communication

1-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book ...
... but a really bad book to learn from. The book is not written for students; it's more like a collection of facts pasted together. On the plus side, the material is logically organized, and this makes it very easy to find what you're looking for.(Which, again, is what makes this a very good reference book). And, the book is complete: everything you need to know is there - semicond. optical amplifiers, optical receivers and transmitters, optical solitons; the whole nine yards. But if you want a learning book, look elsewhere. From the back cover: "Students and researchers alike will benefit from extensive pedagogical aids including: (1) extensive reference lists for each chapter, (2) survey of recent research material for each chapter, (3) relevant end-of-chapter practice problems ..., (4) solutions manual available to teachers on request, (5) system design software on the enclosed CD-ROM."

Now, would you call these pedagogical aids? With the exception of the end-of-chapter problems and the CD, these are primarily aids for the researcher. What's really funny is that he calls the "solutions manual" a pedagogical aid, when it's not even available to students.

In short: this book is not written for first-timers in mind; it's more of a reference book for those who have already seen the material or if you've already had an introductory course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but many errors
Agrawal is very well regarded in the field and in general the book is solid.I am using this book for a graduate level Optical Networks class. The major issue is that there are a lot of errors in the book, especially in the problems.

1-0 out of 5 stars I tried to give it a zero star
This is a horrible book that presents a lot of scattered topics but fails to bound them together. It has a lot of ultra long math formulas on every pages with very brief explainations. The little explaination is done by refering to other abstract formulas which are on other pages!
It is totally unreadable and may be it is intended to be a reference book only.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice and useful
This is a very useful text and reference book for electrical engineers and others who are interested. Its definitely meant for the graduate students and trained engineers and not for the beginners. I used this book as a graduate text and am immensely benefitted as I often require to revise many issues regarding my research. Provides many useful comparisons and references. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read from a tehnology and market perspective
The book captured how an old technology like FSO is capturing market share in a fiber and copper dominated world.

The technology description was thorough with just enough market info to keep me grounded.

I recommend it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Whose this book intended for?
The book lacks a purpose. It bounces around really not making a point or a conclusion. I'm not sure who the intended audience was for this book but it certainly wasn't myself or anyone I know in the networking industry. The book is very slanted to the author's small start-up company and their products. It appears Ghuman is no longer at the company because the bio on the back cover states he "was" not "is" at the company. I checked the web site and there is no mention of him.

I suppose I agree with an earlier comment that better information on the topic is found in white papers freely available on the Internet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reviewer from Academic / Technical sector
Having read the book, I tend to agree with the first two reviewers since most of the Free-Space technology is distorted to suit the authors' products. I disagree with the last reviewer from New York. More accurate FSO references exist for research, academic and development purposes. It depends on the reader ethical technical standard to select the appropriate sources. With less than three months of publishing, the book is already on the used book list....

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is for academics and networkers alike
If you are interested in knowing more about a technology that delivers optical bandwidth via infrared lasers through free space, this book is for you. It contains extensive technical information and telecommunications material for both researchers and network professionals. I know of no other single source that provides this much depth and content about free space optics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baksheesh Ghuman
As a veteran in the industry I am familiar with Baksheesh Ghuman's many articles and presentations over the years. This book reflects his in depth knowledge and insight on the fastest growing technology in the industry. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Study onf Fiber Optics
I have read many books looking for quick information regarding fiber optic systems and this book is by far better than any others in terms of giving you the "need to know" basics and principles.I like how clearly the background information on optical is presented. Some other reviews have aptly pointed out:1)If you are a fiber-optics professional and want in depth treatment of specific issues, you may not find it here. However, if you are like most engineers and need to go from a 0 to 65% expert quickly for making decisions, this book is EXCELLENT.Better than others by far in terms of clarity!2)The background info on optical does assume you have had some basic physics including in order to breeze through it.It is still a good starting point even if you haven't.I actually understood some things better after reading this book versus what I remembered from EM/physics courses.A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This book has helped me with the basic information and tje advanced information that I needed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fiber Optic Communications by Palais
This is a good book for an introductory course in fiber optics for a B.S.E.E. program.

But if you are looking for an in depth description of fiber optics communication, then you should check out "Fiber Optic Communications" by John Senior, published by Prentice-Hall. And for an introduction to the fiber opticstheory without mathematical discussion, "Fiber Optic Communication: An applied approach" by A. Khan, published by Pearson Custom Publishing, is also a good introductory book for students in the telecommunications area.

3-0 out of 5 stars It does not cover the basic understanding deep enough
If you are looking for a theoretical book concerning basic understanding of fiber optics and fiber optic communication, this is a good book for you. This book contains basic mathematics and physics concepts of the fiber optics. I think this book is suitable for researchers and anybody who is interested in the fiber optics from physics point of view.

But if you are looking for a basic understanding non-mathematical of fiber optics and fiber optic communication, this is definitely not a good book for you. I could say that this book is for graduate students only (toward their master or doctoral degree) with already quite strong understanding of theoretical light physics. If you are students with little or no understanding of such theory, I suggest that you look for other books.

This book covers a quite complete of basic understanding of fiber optics and fiber optic communications. Although this book is a good introduction toward mathematics and physics concepts, it does not cover the basic understanding deep enough. I could say that there are a lot of essential understanding were left unexplained. Like I said before that this book is perfect for somebody that has already quite strong understanding of theoretical light physics.

5-0 out of 5 stars compare
I have two optical books on hand which is Understanding Fiber Optics and this one. For my own opinion, this one is more simple and understandable, good for anyone that graduate for a long time and forgot the basic theory. ... Read more
