Product Description
Most world leaders agree that nuclear terrorism represents the gravest international security challenge today. Many scholars and practitioners, however, argue that the United States remains ill-prepared to cope with this serious and real threat. What role should the U.S. play in confronting and combating this danger? Is nuclear terrorism preventable? What steps have the U.S. already taken to prevent a nuclear catastrophe and what future steps should the U.S. government take? Esteemed scholars, scientists and policymakers address these crucial questions from all sides – strategic, tactical, ideological, and technical. This special volume of The ANNALS clarifies and assesses that threat of a nuclear terrorist attack and examines possible solutions for preventing such a catastrophic event. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best edited volume on the issue
I have spent a year now researching nuclear terrorism, and find this volume possibly the most helpful of all. It contains a fine array of excellent accounts of many facets of nuclear terrorism by the best experts there are, like Bunn and Wier and Hecker, and edited by Allison, himself quite a capacity in the field. While these names might not tell you much, I'm telling you they are authorities in their field. Don't let the 'scientific paper' format scare you off: these papers read like a novel. Along with Ferguson and Potter's "The four faces of nuclear terrorism", this edited volume covers just about all you need about this dreadful threat.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Do We Get This Book Read By the Politicians
I hate to say it, but I find this little book almost (note almost) amusing.

We know that there are people out there who hate us. We know that they would like to use nuclear devices to attack us. We know that getting things into this country is not that difficult (witness drugs). We know that nuclear devices are not difficult to build - The US built them sixty years ago, and so far as we know no country that has attempted to build one has failed.

So one day, it seems likely that someone will set one off somewhere.

They there will be all kinds of crying about how there was plenty of evidence it was happening (yes, it's in this book), and why didn't 'they' do something about it.

Perhaps because as in the election just passed the hot topics were Iraq, the price of gasoline, illegal immigration, and look at all these bad things that my opponent has done. And you can be that the people we elected haven't read this book. I'd send a copy to my elected officials, but they wouldn't read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Newest Edition of an old friend
My edition unfortunately only goes to 1975 (end of the Vietnam war for the U.S.) but I still find myself leafing through it time and again to verify some obscure date or battle of the past. A definite book to have in the day of internet, you will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is THE book on Military History
I was given this book over thirty years ago as a gift.Worn, battered, used like an old soldier, I still have it.Whenever I want to look at the political or military history of a given time period.I look here first.

Exhaustively comprehensive, the footnotes and citations are worth the price alone. This book is the starting point for any serious inquiry to events in military history. If you are looking for a brief, concise, and yet detailed explanation of any conflict or battle this is the place. It is all here, Thermopylae, the 6-day War, Napoleon, Hannibal, Sun Tsu, Stalingrad, Verdun, and on and on.

If I had only one book on military history for the rest of my life (a choice I don't have to make). This would be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Harper Encyclopedia of Military History
I can't really add much more than has already been written, but I agree wil the reviewers who call this work comprehensive or complete. This book covers so much it thoroughly deserves all the positive comments already said about it.This is another gem that is out of print, and I wish I had bought it when it was available. This book should be revised and re-released at some point, as it has too much to offer to let it become an obscure library reference section book.Wars will never end, so there will always be a reason and a need to revise it and put it on the market once again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pages worn from use
This book makes superb companion reading to other history, or stands alone as a fun browser.

A couple of criticisms:

I have found a couple of instances in which the authors accepted their source material's claims uncritically and without reference. Numbers used by Herodotus, for example, are passed on in the book in a couple of places whereas these numbers are highly disputed among military historians and certainly are wrong. To Dupuy and Dupuy's great credit, they often give fantastic context and this is a very minor problem.

The bibliography cites works in English, German and Spanish. I presume them to read original works in French as well. Consequently, their treatment of East Asian military history is much weaker than their treatment of European military history. Nonetheless, I have not found another encyclopedia on East Asian military history that rivals this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure
I have owned this book, Harper Encyclopedia of Military History, for a number of years and have yet to come across a text of military history exceeding the former in sheer volume of information. Harper is essentially 1500 plus pages of a timeline covering events from 3100 BC to the beginning of the 1990s. Interspersing this timeline are articles analyzing military developments and personalities within each era of coverage. What makes Harper so comprehensive is its detailed inclusion of events beyond Europe. Regions of the world that would customarily recieve scant to no attention in more Eurocentric works dealing with this topic are focused upon with a dramatic vigor that sheds light on leaders and wars unfamiliar to the West.(Given the prevalent ignorance of history, Western leaders and wars may be just as unfamiliar to a disconcertingly large segment of the Western world). This book is a great reference for anyone desiring a concise, year by year account of military operations in any time period. Harper is a tremendous, tireless resource for scholars and military history aficionados in general. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Photo Documentary of U Boat Pens of WW2
The German conquests of Norway and especially France made the U Boat War against the Allies much easier since the captured ports were closer to the convoy shipping lanes. The bunkers built to protect the U Boats in harbor were massive and survived everything that the Allied planes could throw at them.

This book is loaded with B&W photos to show just how much went into creating safe bunkers for the German submarines. There are brief narratives about each port (Bruges, Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Pallice, BordeauxBergen, Trondheim and Valentin). These fortifications still stand today simply because it is easier to work around them than destroy them. The French still use some to this date. La Pallice was used in the film "Das Boot". The one in Trondheim (Norway) is open to visitors.

This book is very interesting and helpful to any navy buff, those interested in all aspects of the U-Boat war. I highly recommend this book, it is really enlightening to see how many resources were needed to support the U-Boat war. ... Read more

Product Description
From the ideas of Clausewitz to contemporary doctrines of containment and cold war, this is a definitive history of modern military thought. A one-volume collection of Azar Gat's acclaimed trilogy, it traces the quest for a general theory of war from its origins in the Enlightenment. Drastically re-evaluating B.H. Liddell Hart's contribution to strategic theory, the author argues that in the wake of the trauma of the First World War, and in response to the Axis challenge, Liddell Hart developed the doctrine of containment and cold war long before the advent of nuclear weapons. He reveals Liddell Hart as a pioneer of the modern western liberal way in warfare which is still with us today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
As a survey of military thought from the Enlightenment up to the Cold War, I found Professor Gat's book to be comprehensive, thought-provoking, well researched, and well written. In particular the effect of established opinions on the nature of war and how it should be waged, and the reaction of succeeding generations to these established opinions is very interesting. Specifically, the military theories developed during the Enlightenment and the reaction of military theorists to the victories of Napoleon (such as Clausewitz) were of special interest. As Professor Gat himself remarks, there is a tendency to treat the period before Clausewitz as a kind of intellectual void, during which there was no discussion of the theory and practice of war at all. In fact there was a great deal of controversy on military matters taking place in both France and Germany. Admittedly this is a specialist book, not for everyone. But for anyone interested in this topic, I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing survey of military thought
This is the one-volume collection of Azar Gat's trilogy on military thought. He explores thinking about war and strategy ranging from Machiavelli to the 1950s, relating the ideas to their cultural and historical contexts.

As he writes, "New ideas emerge during periods of revolutionary change or at times of crisis, in response to great historical challenges." The great strategic thinkers Jomini and Clausewitz developed their revolutionary ideas in response to the French Revolution.

Gat argues that World War One's massive slaughter forced a paradigm shift from Clausewitz's ideas to the new idea of limited war. But Julian Corbett, limited war's greatest theorist, first published his ideas before 1914. Corbett argued, like Clausewitz, that wars were means to an end, continuations of policy. But he showed that wars could take many forms, with differing limits, depending on their political aims.

Gat exaggerates the importance of J. F. C. Fuller in the interwar period. Fuller plagiarised Ernest Swinton, who first proposed using tanks offensively in numbers to achieve breakthrough. Fuller fantasised that tanks alone could win wars, without infantry and combined arms.

Gat also over praises Basil Liddell Hart, who idealised limited war, just part of Britain's military experiences. In the 1930s, Hart predicted that wars would become more humane and rational: World War Two was the most destructive war in history.

In this war, the greatest test of Britain's survival as an independent and sovereign nation, Fuller and Hart encouraged Hitler to attack the Soviet Union. Hart opposed the Allies' policy of total war against Hitler, and called for Britain to collaborate with Hitler. Hart claimed that victory was unattainable and that fighting Hitler would `only lead to mutual suicide, and the collapse of civilisation'.

Gat asserts that Hart pioneered a `Western way' of warfare, of limited war, containment and economic coercion, based on the reactionary dreams of European and World Federation. But there is no such `Western way': Western ruling classes waged all sorts of wars against national liberation struggles, annihilatory against Korea, Algeria and Vietnam, relatively limited against Malaya and Kenya. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Get there fast with the most men"..Confederate Cavalry General Nathan Bedford Forrest

While General Forrest's tactics have been a wise approach for many years;they need to be modified for modern times.Having the best training, motivated personnel and most advanced weapon systems are also mandatory for success.
At first glance,it may appear that this is a light weight or superficial book of modern weaponry and state of art gizmos.Even the title tends to sell this book short.
The authors,Frank Vizard and Phil Scott have done an excellent job of summarizing how and where the military got to where they are today, what are the newest weapon systems being introduced today, and what can be expected in the future.
We see where weapon systems have progressed at a continually accalerating pace since WWII;and as the saying goes; "You ain't seen nothing yet!"
What this book does especially well is its treatment of the people who will be using these weapons. Now ,and in the future, the "soldier" will be far better trained, motivated, protected, equipped and fewer in number than ever seen in the past.
The book not only covers the soldier but also the weapon systems of all branches of the military;the Army,Marines, Air Force and Army and personnel. We see the latest and projected Aircraft,Armor,Ships,Weaponry,Gear and Tactics supported with clear and concise text and photographs.
I have been attending Air Shows and following military documentaries for a number of years. However;the huge advancement in weaponry was never brought home more to me than this summer when I witnessed a display of the new F-22 Raptor. It showed capabilities that were simply breathtaking;and many of its capabilities are still being kept secret. This new plane clearly shows that this plane, its pilot, support systems, weapons, and stealth proclaim;it's a new era in war planes.
This book is going to be a very invaluable aid when following present and future conflicts.
If you want to know what's going on militarily, don't by-pass this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proves Transformation requires M113A3 Gavin combat vehicles
If there is a single book that captures exactly what is going on right now in DoD, this is THE book. Not only do the authors survey all of the major air, land and sea weapons systems under development, they write from a context framed by the past. This makes this work exceptional in contrast to most books that gush over future gadgetry while ignoring the physical world we live in which requires platforms that are robust, durable and mobile.

The book details how real transformation in land combat requires splicing new technologies like hybrid-electric drives, band tracks and advanced armor and weaponry to combat proven tracked M113A3 Gavin type vehicles not expensive lav3stryker rubber-tired armored cars. The authors explain how 5 combat effective 10.5 ton tracked M113A3 Gavins can fly in a single C-17 and easily in smaller C-130 aircraft while the overweight 19-ton wheeled lav3strykers can only fly 2-3 at a time in a C-17 and stripped down of fuel/ammo inside a C-130. The authors dilligently point out that spending billions on inferior equipment and losing capabilities is not transformation---gaining capabilities by upgrading M113 Gavins into Brigade Combat Teams is the way to victory.

Another excellent segment of the book is its depiction of efforts to lighten the individual Soldier's load and give him greater mobility (4-25 mph) by means like folding all-terrain bikes (ATBs) and carts. This book is a fascinating look into the future of U.S. warfare and should be a must-read by every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen or marine. ... Read more

When an advanced alien species offers the human race the secrets behind universal space travel, mankind jumps at the offer in this thrilling sci-fi tale of ambition gone awry. What had been humanity's hope for the most advanced starship ever created soon turns to disaster—military task forces, mutiny, and meteor showers all combine in forcing the ship, and the crew of 275 humans frozen in suspended animation, to return to Earth. But what awaits them back home—humans who have regressed to Neanderthal status that are now subservient to genetically enhanced crocodiles—is nothing like they ever imagined.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother really
If you are a sci-fi fan who likes Banks, Asher and hardcore scifi, don't waste your money. The characterization and plot is naive and overall the book is poorly written. I'm still kicking myself for paying good money for this.

1-0 out of 5 stars 10th grade level
This is the worst SF book I've ever read, and I've been reading SF since the 60s.It reads like a 10th grade English paper or some child's writing project.I simply cannot understand how it got published. The least the publisher should have done was to publish it as a "juvenile" title. Not only will I never again read anything by this author, I will never again read anything from this publisher!!SAVE YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It!!
I'm not one that is usually drawn toward sci-fi novels.A friend told me this was a must read, so I gave it a shot. After the first few pages I was hooked and have not been able to put it down during the little time I have to myself during the day.It definitely pulls you in and takes you on a ride from beginning to end.I would definitely recommend everyone read it and I look forward to the next edition from Steve Hendry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leapfrog
This book was most interesting from beginning to end. The characters were well defined and very believable. The story really seem like something which could happen in the future and you never really know what to expect. I read it in just several days anxious to see what was going to happen next. The book was hard to put down. I do not read much science fiction, since I am not a fan of Star Treck, etc., but I really enjoyed this. I really enjoyed the ending since it left room for future books. I do hope the author will write other books which will continue the story line where this one left off.

1-0 out of 5 stars "A LEAP TOO FAR"
Leapfrog ,is among one of the biggest peices of crap ever written!!. it so heavly flawed from the begining, the world is a supposed,a world government, the ship was funded by the nations of all the world, yet the crew of the "leapfrog" are all american, there is not one single person from another country, the crew are all very, very("white american, on the inside),the characters are so unbeliveable, the story so contradictory, that by the end of the book i was ready to throw it at the wall. what anger's me the most 'is when, near the end of the book , all the people who either died in cryo sleep or on the planet are dissmissed as 'trash" that they really did not need them ,and are better off without them!!.as an author you suck!!!!!!,mr hendry. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Neat little reference!
I bought this hoping to answer some fairly specific questions about older (WWII-Korean era) vehicles. I found nearly all of my answers inside! Just enough photos, neat compilations of technical data and good depth/breadth of vehicles make this a good choice for any buff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for MVs of the period
This book is a very good reference for military vehicles of the period. I have several other MV books but I always turn to this one because of its layout and decent photos. The photos are very good and the descriptions concise and brief.

The only negatives I can think of are that the prices are slightly out of date from my experience and sometimes too many models are grouped together.

4-0 out of 5 stars handy general reference
This is a general overview of US military transport vehicles from WW2 to the present. Combat vehicles are present, but not as detailed coverage as other books. The "meat" of this book is the trucks, jeeps, tractors, etc. that keep an army operating. The book covers the diverse array of military vehicles that have ranged from the mundane to the outrageous.Obviously aimed at the vehicle enthusiast or military historian versus a model builder, the book contains handy data such as standardization dates, mechanical data, etc. This book is a good compliment to other publications that specialize in pictorial content.Overall a nice addition to the military vehicle researcher's shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars where are the pretty pictures?
I bought this book as an art refferance material and was a bit dissapointed to find out that the photos inside were not as good as the ones on the cover , which shows great looking pictures in vivid colors , crisp and full of details . Inside despite the good quality paper the photos are all b&w and clearly were not taken by profesional photographer , some are bit blury , the details are not clear in most cases and some were taken in poor lighting conditions which means part of the vehicle is lit and part is just a black shade .

For the die hard military vehicles fans its the right book I guess , for the extensive information on each moudle and pricing . The categories range from jeeps to light and heavy trucks totanks and more , as well as amphibious but the motorcycles section is very small . ... Read more

Product Description

NATO member states are all undergoing some form of military transformation.Despite a shared vision, transformation has been primarily a US-led process centered on the exploitation of new information technologies in combination with new concepts for "networked organizations" and "effects-based operations."Simply put, European states have been unable to match the level of US investment in new military technologies, leading to the identification of a growing "transformation gap" between the US and the European allies.

This book assesses the extent and trajectory of military transformation across a range of European NATO member states, setting their transformation progress against that of the US, and examining the complex mix of factors driving military transformation in each country. It reveals not only the nature and extent of the transatlantic gap, but also identifies an enormous variation in the extent and pace of transformation among the European allies, suggesting both technological and operational gaps within Europe.

Well before the Industrial Revolution, Europe developed the superior military potential and expertise that enabled her to dominate the world for the next two centuries. In this attractively illustrated and updated edition, Geoffrey Parker discusses the major changes in the military practice of the West during this time period--establishment of bigger armies, creation of superior warships, the role of firearms--and argues that these major changes amounted to a "military revolution" that gave Westerners a decided advantage over people of other continents.A new chapter addresses the controversies engendered by the previous edition. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars achy
I'm a student, and I hated this book.It could be condensed into one sentence.Who needs all the backing up facts that you'll forget about anyway. That's what happens when you have to take required classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complementary readings to Parker's book
There are already some good reviews, so I will only suggest reading the following books on war in addition to Parker's: a) "War in human civilization" by Azar Gat; b) "War before Civilization. The Myth of the Peaceful Savage", by Lawrence Keeley; c) "How War Began" by Keith F. Otterbein; d) "War and Peace and War: The Rise and Fall of Empires" by Peter Turchin; and e) "War and the Law of Nations: A General History" by Stephen Neff.

4-0 out of 5 stars R.M.A.
Parker managed to analyze the R.M.A. phenomenon (which still is a controversial issue for many) giving a global perspective. This is one of the big advantages of this book; he is not 'isolated' in the European continent but rather gives us an idea of the R.M.A.'s impact in other cultures and societies. During the 1990s, it was fashionable in the defense intellectual community to talk and write about a military revolution driven by the advances of the Information Age.The concept of a "military revolution" can trace its lineage back to a lecture given by the British historian Michael Roberts at Queen's University in Belfast in January 1955 titled "The military revolution 1560-1660."Thirty years later Geoffrey Parker delivered a series of lectures at Trinity College, Cambridge, that endorsed, but modified Roberts' original and highly influential thesis, and which was ultimately turned into book form as "The Military Revolution: Military innovation and the rise of the West, 1500-1800."

It is important to clearly state Parker's main objective in writing this piece. He notes that much scholarly attention has been devoted to explaining the rapid conquest by western states during the 19th century. It has been claimed that between 1800 and 1914 the West went from controlling 35% of the earth's surface to 84%.Here Parker endeavors to explain how the West came to control the first 35%, which cannot be explained by the Industrial Revolution, and his explanation is derived from Roberts' original thesis of a military revolution in the 16th century.

Parker accepts but modifies Roberts' general argument that a fundamental change in tactics, accompanied by a stunning growth in army size, the development of complex strategies, and the profound impact of military operations on society led to a military revolution that had deep and lasting consequences. To begin with, Parker suggests that the impact of the military revolution was much slower to develop and much less decisive than Roberts had argued. Thus, where Roberts' revolution is contained in a one hundred year period (1560-1660), Parker sees a revolution that unfolded over a period that began a bit earlier (1500) and took much longer to mature (1800).Next, he sees the rise of modern fortifications, especially the famed trace italienne, as the truly distinguishing characteristic of the revolutionary period, and not the tight drill of handheld firearm weaponry by infantry units as argued by Roberts and brought to perfection by the Swedish army of Gustavus Adolphus in the Thirty Years War.Parker suggests that Roberts over-emphasized the importance of tactical changes in set piece battles, such Breitenfeld (1631) or Lutzen (1632), which occurred in Germany precisely because of the absence of modern trace italienne fortifications. It was the artillery fortifications that drove the rapid expanse in army size and logistical sophistication, Parker argues, and not mobile infantry firepower.

Parker sees a clearly definable progression of military development.First came the maturation of gunpowder artillery, which so clearly obsolesced the high and thin fortification walls of Italy in the French invasion of 1494.Second, in response to the power of siege artillery against classical walls developed to thwart scaling attacks, a new form of fortification was low, thick and oblique in design (not to mention incredible expensive), which diffused all through out the lands of the Hapsburgs in Western Europe and were effective against artillery barrage.Third, the answer to conquering the new "artillery fortresses" was massive manpower to strangle the strongpoint into submission over a long period of time.Fourth, in order to recruit, supply, and pay such forces of unprecedented size required a bureaucratic revolution that ultimately changed the face of governments in Europe and, in Roberts' and Parker's view, led directly to the rise absolutism. Finally, and central to the whole thesis of the book, Parker maintains that the combination of artillery firepower, large armies with an infrastructure to support them, and nearly impregnable artillery fortresses to garrison conquered land combined to serve as the engine of empire in the early days of Western expansion, leading directly to conquest of one-third of the world by dawn of the 19th century.

This book is a great read and a vivid introduction to the topic of the military revolution of the 16th century.I can't remember the last time I read a serious work of history that included so many relevant and useful pictures, diagrams, and maps.It is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in early Modern Europe, military innovation, or western imperialism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Concise, But Imperfect
In this well written and concise book, Geoffrey Parker argues that a revolution in European fighting methods in this era transformed Europe and gave Europeans a military advantage over the rest of the world. As a result, by 1800 European powers held substantial empires which they would expand greatly in the eighteen and nineteen hundreds.Parker gives convincing arguments on the advantages of gunpowder weapons, superior European organization, superior European naval power, and the ruthlessness of European warfare compared to that of some opponents. What is less convincing is the emphasis on the Italian trace system of fortifications and the supposedly resulting increase in army size and weakness of smaller states.Good coherent coverage is given to naval warfare and early imperialism, like the Portuguese and Dutch in Indonesia as well as later British success in India. The efforts of non-western powers to adapt to the revolution are also covered, as well as eastern practices of impoundment of goods as a substitute for strong naval power. This book is excellent, but for a fuller view, please also read "The Military Revolution Debate" edited by Clifford Rogers. ... Product Description
Public, press, and academic interest in the military justice system has increased over the past generation. This is a result of several high-profile trials (the Sergeant Major of the Army and Kelly Flinn, among others), a popular TV show, and broader public attention to and interest in the military, stemming from the post-Cold War prominence of the military (Gulf War I, Balkans, and post-9/11 operations in Afghanistan and Iraq). In addition, some of the more prominent cases from the war in Iraq, including Abu Ghraib and detainee cases, as well as the GTMO military commissions, have kept military justice in the news.

There are many misconceptions about the rudiments of the military justice system. Many perceive severity where there is none (though there are features that differ from the civilian system, sometimes unfavorably for the accused), and few are aware of its unique protections and features. This volume accomplishes two main purposes: (1) it provides comprehensive, accurate, and current information about the military justice system and related disciplinary features, written by a lawyer but in laymen's language; and (2) it explains the system through some illustrative or engaging anecdotes, including the trials of Billy Mitchell, Eddie Slovik and the World War II Nazi saboteurs, whose capture and trial provide the basis for the Guantanamo-based trials of suspected terrorists, initiated by President Bush and continued by President Obama). The U.S. military justice continues to thrive and expand while systems in our Allied nations have been restricted or virtually shut down. This volume provides some insight on why this is, while educating citizens and practitioners in its functions, rules, and traditions. ... Product Description
In Honor Betrayed, Dr. Mic Hunter probes beyond the headlines to reveal the reality of sexual abuse in the military. The culture of the military's training is to turn recruits into those who follow orders without question.Honor Betrayed describes in detail the gross realities of the hostile, uber-masculine, dehumanizing environment our young men and women confront. Most vulnerable to sexual abuse are minorities-particularly women and homosexuals. Included are first-person accounts from American servicewomen and men who were sexually abused by their comrades, including one woman whose case was heard before the U.S. Supreme Court. Hunter also explores the tacit acceptance of these incidents in the military to the recent prisoner abuse scandal in Iraq. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Informative Book
Honor Betrayed is quite an informative book, but also a bit of a difficult read. It is not difficult because of the "taboo" subject, rather, because of the wealth of information provided that brings this subject into the spotlight. It's difficult to "take it all in!"Dr. Hunter deals with this topic with understanding and compassion.Because of the amount of evidence provided, the subject of sexual harassment and abuse is overwhelmingly and irrefutably documented and validated by both men and women of all branches of the military, going back to incidences of honor betrayed before WWII and outlining those that are reported still during the present wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.Do you deny that harassment and abuse occur?Do you deny that it happens still, today?Do you deny that it could ever occur to you?Or you?Think again!

Honor Betrayed: Sexual Abuse in America's Military

5-0 out of 5 stars MST: Not a silent word anymore
This book has the most insightful information on the market. It doesn't sugar coat anything nor does it sound like a fictional novel. This is a great tool for survivors of MST so they can have some sort of idea of the mentality of the rapist/assaultist.The mentality is far different than civilians. The "hypermasculinity" is the difference. It's very understandable if you're faced with sexist comments or actions frequently, if not daily, since female don't usually fit that title of being hypermasculine.Even men are "dealt with" by their peers. They suffer as well with PTSD/MST.

The statistics named throughout the book are staggering.Again and again it's proven that there is a big difference and lists some solutions. This is hardly a textbook but so helpful for those who are survivors or friends and family.

Military sexual trauma is not a new issue of course, since this has gone on way back to WWII or further, but has become increasingly a problem in today's Iraq war.Women are coming forward from other wars who have dealt with MST--before it was even given a name. This book could be a great tool for veteran facilities to use. With increasing vets coming from the Iraq war who have been raped, this book can help along with PTSD therapy.

Any survivor or friends/family should DEFINATELY read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for all Americans
Oath Betrayed: Torture, Medical Complicity, and the War on Terror
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is an extraordinary book. The topic itself is taboo. Dr. Hunter's examination of it is broad, thorough, and covers a great range of topics, from incentives for enlisting to domestic violence in military families (five times higher than civilian settings), domestic killings, the role and treatment of women in today's military, homophobia, sexual harassment, sexual assault, military leadership, etc.

While mostly focused on the US military it does discuss some issues with Canadian military and presents some research on the military of other countries.

Dr. Hunter takes you inside traditions and practices which may be unfamiliar and shocking. No holds are bared when he examines military slang, most of which cannot be repeated here because of vulgarity.Even having treated veterans for many years, I was not prepared for some of this content.

This book confronts a great many myths with research data.Dr. Hunter notes that even the Pentagon acknowledges that many male veterans acknowledge having been sexually assaulted by their comrades in arms - and also notes that contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of such male victims are heterosexual.A full 28% of female veterans who were surveyed reported that they had been assaulted while serving their country. Dr. Hunter reviews data and dozens of case examples - some well-known cases, and some which did not receive much publicity.

The issues of hazing and indoctrination are extremely shocking.Having treated veterans of a number of wars and also having worked with sexual and other types of abuse for 40 years, I was surprised and shocked by a number of these.Even extensive experience working with victims was not adequate preparation for some of these stories. The examples ranged from those in military academies to those in basic training and service situations.

"When future Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall attended the Virginia Military Academy, senior cadets ordered him to squat over a bayonet until his knees buckled and he fell on the blade, cutting him and scarring him for life. In 1983, at the Air Force Academy, first-year cadets were ordered to run up and down flights of stairs wearing winter clothing until exhausted, to the point where 139 cadets needed medical treatment for dehydration and some had to be hospitalized."

Dr. Hunter explores the impact of sexual assault, sexual harassment, hazing, and other aspects of service using research data, case examples, and some cases which have been litigated. Tailhook and other cases are reviewed and their eventual outcomes examined. He also examines torture, harassment of prisoners, and other forms of brutality - from Me Lai to Abu Ghraib.

"An event has happened upon which it is difficult to speak, and impossible to remain silent"Forgiveness Memorial, Duluth, Minnesota

"I came home, No scars on my body, Nothing to show, The wounds inside. - Gregory Helle, U.S. Army, SP5 p. 256

Dr. Hunter has peppered his text with a variety of current or recent cases, which is quite helpful. But he has a dizzying array of quotes and examples from military leaders and situations going back centuries.I don't want to present too many in hopes that you will read the book and see them in context, but one sidebar (p. 113) is entitled "Ike & the Dykes" and is a fascinating story about Dwight Eisenhower I have never seen.

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power"Abraham Lincolnp. 61

Dr. Hunter covers a number of issues with military leadership and traditions. He examines parallels between military leadership and some of the behavior of drug addicted persons. There are interesting sections on attitudes towards women and the role of prostitution and official sanctioning of it over many centuries through the present.

"Prostitutes are a necessity.Without them men would attack respectable women in the streets"General Napoleon Bonaparte. 64

The last section of the book contains an array of in-depth personal accounts of a wide range of situations. Some of those who write identify themselves. Some are familiar cases such as that of Gregory Helle (author of A Walk in Hell: The Other Side of War) and Reverend Dorothy H. Mackey (co-founder of Survivors Take Action Against Abuse by Military Personel, Captain & Commander, Federal Women's Supervisor of the Year, US Air Force Commendation Medal, US Air Force Achievement Medal). These ten personal stories which make up Part II of the book provides a rich set of case examples, which like the rest of the book, are very stirring to read.

Despite the grim picture he paints, Dr. Hunter also has suggestions for change and even optimistic thoughts about it, noting that the military successfully dealt with racism against African Americans, and in some places this change preceded such changes in civilian life. This is not just about problems - it is about solutions.

The book contains many fascinating pieces I was not expecting.I was fascinated by the "Pop Quiz" on p. 231 where one is asked to identify which "dangerous group" is being referred to - African Americans, Women, or Gays/Lesbians. Dr. Hunter has peppered the book with intriguing challenges to our knowledge.

This is one of the best books on abuse I have ever read, and it stands alone in terms of the main topic - honor betrayed - sexual abuse in America's military.I read it straight through - I had difficulty putting it down.I plan to read it a second time - there was so much of importance in it that it was hard to take it all in during one reading.

This book should be required reading for citizens and legislators and all those who have anything to do with sending people off to war and welcoming them back home. Anyone who is offering service to veterans has, in my professional opinion, an obligation to read this book. There are many things in it which service personel are not likely to reveal.

In case you are not familiar with Mic Hunter, he is a Licensed Psychologist and Marriage & Family Therapist who practices in St. Paul, MN.He's the author of four other books including Abused Boys: The Neglected Victims of Sexual Abuse, for which he received the Fay Honey Knopp Memorial Award from the National Organization on Male Sexual Victimization. If you haven't seen it, I would also highly recommend a book he co-authored with Jim Struve - The Ethical Use of Touch in Therapy. He is the author of many articles and lectures and trains internationally.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview with practical limitations
This is a timely topic. Despite publicized campaigns against sexual assault in the military, the problem is not going away. Women soldiers are especially in danger in Iraq. Commanders routinely warn them not to visit the latrine without another woman for protection; three women who died from dehydration had reportedly stopped drinking fluids in the afternoons out of fear of being raped while walking to the latrine. As a young female soldier who carried a knife for protection from fellow soldiers told an interviewer: "There are only three kinds of female the men let you be in the military: a bitch, a ho or a dyke.... In Vietnam they had prostitutes to keep them from going crazy, but they don't have those in Iraq. So they have women soldiers instead." (The full article is available at Salon's website.)

In this volume, Mic Hunter has synopsized an impressive volume of research literature spanning many decades on the topics of rape, sexual harassment, hazing, homophobia, hypermasculinity, domestic violence, and their interconnections. The book offers a helpful introduction to readers who are ignorant about these topics. Unfortunately, Dr. Hunter's treatment of the current situation in the U.S. military is poorly grounded, offering a simplistic analysis and broad generalities. He often lumps together all time periods and all branches of the military. More seriously, he fails to address recent efforts to curtail military sexual assault. What are these efforts? Are they having any positive impact? Are they mere window dressing? Dr. Hunter is silent on these questions. Nor does he seem aware of some of the practical limitations inherent in efforts to court martial suspected sexual abusers. With just a few exceptions, such as his recommendation of eliminating the "Feres Doctrine" that prohibits soldiers from suing the government, he gives little in the way of practical advice.

As a researcher, I found his loose use of data troubling. For example, he cites an unpublished web source to claim that 45% of untreated sex offenders reoffend - a substantially higher proportion than that found in authoritative, published studies. Without adequately referencing such in the text, he cites data that are sometimes many decades old to support his contentions about today's situation. He also uses seemingly discrepant statistics to make different arguments in different sections. For example, on p. 168 he states that "in civilian courts, only 2% of those charged with sexual assault are convicted and imprisoned." Just 20 pages later he asserts that "in the civilian criminal justice system, four out of five of those arrested for sexual assault are prosecuted." While both claims could be technically accurate, his purpose in introducing these statistics seems blatantly polemical. The book contains no index and the referencing system is laborious, so it takes a great deal of effort to figure out where he is getting his information, in order to evaluate the validity of the sources.

As important as this topic is, I fear that some of these weaknesses will make the book ring false to the very audience that most needs it - those who are intimately involved with the military and who are working to reduce sexual abuse within its ranks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
It takes a great deal of courage to address such a politically sensitive issue as Women in the Military, but that is exactly what Brian Mitchell does in this book.

In it he narrates, among other things, the true story behind the sensational Tailhook Scandal and how Paula Coughlin was anything but innocent. And also the tragic death of Kara Hultgreen (the first women F-14 Pilot) which could have been prevented if those in charge would have just recognized her inability to safely handle such an aircraft.

The most frustrating part of the book are the stories of some good men who were pure and simply sacrificed on the altar of political correctness. Men such as Maj. Jeffrey Ecker, a Top Gun Navy flight instructor, who was "removed from flight status and reassigned to nonexistent maintenance jobs," merely because he told the truth about the poor flight performance of one Jacquelyn S. Parker; a performance so pathetic that she nearly got herself killed.

Even more appalling was the story of Admiral Stan Arthur. In spite of the fact that he had flown over 500 combat missions in Vietnam and "commanded the largest naval armada since World War II", during the Gulf War, he was forced into early retirement. Why? Because he simply "approved a report upholding a decision to wash out a female officer (Rebecca Hansen) from flight school."

This is an excellent book for those wanting to know the disastrous consequences of allowing women in the military.

4-0 out of 5 stars Women in the Military: Flirting with Disaster
Good book, but many things stated in the book have been proving in correct.Women are doing the job that the author felt they couldn't do. Book arrived in great shape and within the stated time period.I would recommend the book and seller. Just another view on military women in combat. Thank You.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Truth
Brian Mitchell knows his subject. He's an Airborne Ranger qualified Infantry officer, which is something that none of the detractors on here can say. When I read this book, I was a young man headed off to West Point.I had vague notions about women in the military and was not in favor of women serving in combat. But I felt that the government couldn't restrict women's access to public institutions (this was just after the Citadel and VMI were forcibly opened). This book exploded those notions in my mind and drastically changed how I viewed the feminization of our Armed Forces. My subsequent experiences as a cadet and as an officer in both all-male and mixed gender units (in combat in Iraq and in garrison) underscored the basic truths of this book.All-male units are superior in every way to mixed gender units, which are absolute disasters of sexual tension and misconduct, poor discipline and wretched physical fitness. Many of us also mourn the loss of the great honor and traditions that were destroyed at the nation's Service Academies, leaving them a politically correct farce far from their glorious past.

Mitchell's book is a bit dated now. Many of his vignettes from the 1970's - 1980's are long forgotten or footnotes to the fact that women are serving overseas in the War on Terror.Regardless, this is an excellent primer for someone wanting the non-politically correct truth of how 35 years of feminist policies have had ruinous and pernicious effects on the military's cohesion, fitness, morale and readiness.

1-0 out of 5 stars factual errors abound
The majority of the arguments presented by the author, while backed up by statistics and numbers in the text, are skewed to represent the authors opinion.the author writes about womens motivations, not based upon interviews with women in service, but based on his own opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Down
Disguised as a scholarly effort, this book reeks of chauvinism. Mitchell distorts the truth (something he ironically accuses feminists of doing) and makes claims for which he has no basis. For a more accurate look at women's role in the military, see D'Ann Campbell's "Combating the Gender Gulf" (about women's military service in the first Gulf War) or Judith Hick's Stiehm's Arms and the Enlisted Woman. Both works bring to light the complexity of women's roles in the military and give a much more balanced assessment of their history and future in the Armed Forces. ... Read more

Product Description

This book of contributed chapters by subject matter expertly provides an overview and analysis of salient contemporary and historical military subjects from the military geographer’s perspective. Factors of geography have had a compelling influence on battles and campaigns throughout history; however, geography and military affairs have gained heightened attention during the past two decades, and military geography is the discipline best situated to explain them. Hence, the premise of this book and its contents are founded on the principle that geographical knowledge of space, place, people, and scale provide essential insights into contemporary security issues and promotes the idea that such insight is critical to understanding and managing significant military problems at local, regional, and global scales.
