2-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Civil War Rhetoric on War - -Very Wordy,
I keep scroliing thru this yawner to find some actual strategy and tactics, but the oratorical style rolls on and on like a coming thunderstorm. If it were a paper book, I could flip back and forth to find a chapter- - or even a mention--on what I want. The style is flowery, almost painterly, in building up a view of the author's subjects. It seems he has read Plato's dialogs and so the Q and A paragraphs go on and on and on and on . . . . . I am sure that the reader of the time found it edifying. But I keep wishing for a mental mute button- - or to find a way to fast-forward to see how a battle plan is laid out. I have read four percent of the book, by the scale at the bottom of the page - - -and am still in the introduction - -the "Whys" of modern warfare.Just dealing with Pacifists and Quakers cures insomnia.I am sure that General Patton loved it, tho'. I may keep it available in my Kindle as an artifact. . . Or I may just delete it.As an artifact of the time, I can only say that the author is no Lincoln. By that standard, I may toss it. ... Product Description
First time in paperback: An all-encompassing chronicle of African Americans' in the armed forces of the United States.

From the birth of the United States, African American men and women have fought and died in defense of a nation that has often denied them many fundamental rights of citizenship. Now Gerald Astor has chronicled their efforts and accomplishments in this critically acclaimed survey. From Crispus Attucks, first casualty of the American Revolution, to fighters on both sides of the Civil War, Astor moves to the postwar Indian campaigns and the infamous Brownsville riot. He also documents the prejudices and grievous wrongs that have kept African Americans from service-and finally traces their ascent to the highest levels. The Right to Fight is a groundbreaking contribution to American history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book was needed for a class. I have found it to be a great dipiction of African American history. If you need a great source for research, this would be it.

3-0 out of 5 stars A couple of remarks
This is a readable and graphic history, mostly from the vantage point of the common soldier. Politics in the larger sense are frequently neglected. A glaring example of this neglect is the brief and flippant coverage of President Harry Truman's actual order to desegregate the US Armed Forces, the Executive Order 9981, issued in July of 1948. This seems to me to have been the single most important event in the entire saga, yet the author dismisses Truman in three pages, mostly quoting old letters which demonstrate, surprise! that GiveEmHell Harry used coarse language (in private) when talking about racial demographics, as he did when talking about everything else (in private). Readers who are looking for an account of what led up to this decision, which Truman knew could lose the Deep South in the tight upcoming election * will need to look elsewhere. The book "Foxholes and color lines : desegregrating the U.S. Armed Forces", by Sherie Mershon and Steven Schlossman (John Hopkins, 1998) has an entire chapter on this decision which so infuriated the white South and proved to be so important in the Civil Rights era.
Another deficiency, unfortunately not unusual these days, is the complete lack of notes. There is a bibliography, but who knows where a particular fact may have come from?
A good resource, but far from comprehensive.

* he did lose the Deep South; four states to a fellow who, though he was sworn to uphold the rule of law, was known to invite adversaries in public debate out onto the street to settle their differences, and, though not officially taking an oath to do so, loudly proclaimed that he would fight with all his might against "mixing", as it was then called, forbidden interaction that could ultimately lead to miscegenation. As it happened, the wowser who gained South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi (plus an anomalous single Electoral Vote in Tennessee) but, to history's gratitude, lost the United States, had himself been guilty of miscegenation. With progeny to prove it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive work on an area that has been grossly overlooked
The subject that Gerald Astor has chosen to write about, depicts the continuing saga of a group of people that has been the subject of more studies then any other group in America. In a methodical and comprehensivemanner the author gives us a chronological history of Black American andhistoric accomplishments of the black soldier. From the American Revolutionto the Persian Gulf Astor paints a picture through interview and analysisthat cuts away the bias that has been the hall mark of the manner that thissubject has heretofore been treated. His anecdotal passages add a sense ofthe social and cultural times that are germain to the periods of history hewrites about. The story of the first American Hero, Sgt Henry Johnson ofAlbany NY in WWI and the Montford Point Marines in WWII are of exceptionalimportance in this work. All to often these men and their significantcontribution that helps to keep the fabric of America strong are grosslyoverlooked! This book is a must for African American HIstory, MilitaryHistory and American History buff's in general. ... Read more

Product Description

In this book, Mark Walker - a historical scholar of Nazi science - brings to light the overwhelming impact of Hitler's regime on science and, ultimately, on the pursuit of the German atomic bomb. Walker meticulously draws on hundreds of original documents to examine the role of German scientists in the rise and fall of the Third Reich. He investigates whether most German scientists during Hitler's regime enthusiastically embraced the tenets of National Socialism or cooperated in a Faustian pact for financial support, which contributed to National Socialism's running rampant and culminated in the rape of Europe and the genocide of millions of Jews. This work unravels the myths and controversies surrounding Hitler's atomic bomb project. It provides a look at what surprisingly turned out to be an Achilles' heel for Hitler - the misuse of science and scientists in the service of the Third Reich.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding and Insight of NAZI Science
The book is an invuable resource for people interested in the reality of the behavior of German scientists under Hitler, and their program for their self-serving propaganda afterward. The author was remarkably even-handed and even generous.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy to work within a oppressive government
The author does a very good job of showing that not everything is black and white. The only comment that I can add is that what people do or say while they are working under an oppressive government can not always be used to prove how any individual really feels or thinks. In Germany, at that time, if an individual of Heisenberg's status spoke openly against the government then he would be risking more than just his job.At the very least he would have had all of his communications monitored, he and his family would have been watched, his travel would have been restricted and at most he could have been jailed or he could have quietly disappeared. If he did not try and sell the idea of continuing the work on either the reactor or some form of nuclear weapon then he would see his funding getting pulled and his position would be diminished.

As the author points out, it is never easy to clearly understand the thinking of an individual by what they say or even do.At one point Heisenberg felt that Hitler would win the war, so I am sure that he felt that he would have little control over the out come and he might as well take the most of any opportunity that could come up.Once it was clear that Hitler was not going to win then he had to rethink his strategy for keeping funding and making sure that his position in the scientific community did not diminish.

Product Description

Until now, no single volume has provided an authoritative, comprehensive, and concise description of China's evolving geo-strategy, or detailed how China is transforming its military to carry out this strategy. This book examines the current and future issues impinging on that strategic evolution, in order to facilitate an understanding of the military-strategic basis for, and future trajectory of, a rising China.Fisher examines how China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) remains critical to the existence of the Chinese Communist government and looks at China's political and military actions designed to protect its expanded strategic interests. And he examines how the United States and other governments simultaneously seek greater "engagement" with China on strategic concerns, while also "hedging" against its rising power. Although China faces both internal and external constraints on its "rise" to global eminence, it cannot be denied that China's government is pursuing a far-reaching strategic agenda.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guide reference guide to Chinese military modernization, but...
But do see the facts and the opinions separately! Actually, the author does a good job of distinguishing between the two types of information. The changes in the PLA have been dramatic, modernizations, Westernizations in equipment and tactics, diversification of skills, and the building up of a (not properly socialist!) non-commissioned officer class. The political and strategic ramifications of this powerful buildup are featured at least as much as the typical content on the changes themselves.

Throughout the book, the theme of offensive capability is repeated again and again. The book takes it at face value that there is an inevitable conflict of American and Chinese interests across the Pacific Rim. But, as I mentioned above, the opinions and facts are reasonably easy to distinguish from each other, and I would not hesitate to recommend this book to folks of any political view of China with the proviso that you might disagree with the author, but he's clearly in command of the facts.

Product Description
Operational Logistics: The Art and Science of SustainingMilitary Operations explores military logistics in terms of thetheoretical foundations of operational logistics (OpLog) and itsapplications. The theoretical foundations are examined with regard totwo dimensions. First, the artistic or qualitative aspects ofcontemporary logistics are looked at in the context of the operationallevel of war. These OpLog aspects include principles, imperatives andtenets, which are stated and analyzed. The second dimension relates tothe scientific aspects of logistics. It is manifested by a formalnetwork model that represents the structural and operational featuresof an OpLog system. Hence the book examines both artistic andscientific dimensions of military logistics and integrates therespective qualitative and quantitative aspects into a unified anddefinitive presentation of operational logistics.

The book is intended for logisticians, commanders and militaryscholars. Operations-research analysts, who are interested inlarge-scale logistics systems, may also find interest in the book, inparticular in the models that are presented in the last four chapters.

Chapter 1 presents a general introduction to militarylogistics. Chapter 2 discusses the general structure andcharacteristics of logistics and describes its three levels -strategic, operational and tactical. Chapter 3 focuses on OperationalLogistics (OpLog). Chapter 4 deals with the logistics planningprocess. Chapter 5 addresses the issue of logisticsinformation. Chapter 6 deals with forecasting logisticsdemands. Chapter 7 introduces the first version of the logisticsnetwork model. Chapter 8 addresses an important property of an OpLogsystem - Flexibility. Chapter 9 discusses two major (and dual) issuesin OpLog practice: force accumulation and medical treatment andevacuation. Chapter 10 presents an inter-temporal network optimizationmodel that is designed to determine deployment and employment of thesupport chain in an OpLog system. ... Read more

Product Description
Finally available in paperback, Ralph D. Sawyer's incomparable study of ancient Chinese warfare.

One of the most profound studies of warfare ever written, The Seven Military Classics of Ancient China presents us with an Eastern tradition of strategic thought that emphasizes outwitting one's opponent through speed, stealth, flexibility, and a minimum of force--an approach very different from that stressed in the West, where the advantages of brute strength have overshadowed more subtle methods.

Safeguarded for centuries by the ruling elites of imperial China, even in modern times these writings have been known to only a handful of Western specialists. In this volume are seven separate essays, written between 500 B.C. and A.D. 700, that preserve the essential tenets of strategy distilled from the experience of the most brilliant warriors of ancient China.

This accurate translation remedies a serious gap in Western knowledge of Asian thought. Based on the best available classical Chinese manuscripts, some only recently discovered by archaeologists, The Seven Military Classics of Ancient China is a uniquely important contribution to the world's military literature and is essential reading for anyone interested in China's rich cultural heritage or in the timeless principles of successful warfare strategy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
The seven classics in this book are so good that the chinese military classified them so that no up and coming rebels could read them; But nowadays everyone can, and should read them, so do it. It is an essential for those who seek to understand conflict, prosperity, and humanity itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well writen
I, for one, enjoyed this book. I am not here to critic, as a few of these other reviews appear to be. One, the book is easy to understand and follow. Meaning, the translations are well recorded. Two, I have recently been curious in Chinese history of warfare and this book was able to show me much Chinese philosophy towards warfare. I recomend it this book to any follower of military history or Chinese warfare. You get your moneys worth.

Sawyer knows his subject. He is a master of Chinese warfare and culture. He even teaches you how to pronounce some common Chinese words that we in the west always mispronounce.

Product Description
When originally published in 1981, The Hand Cannons of Imperial Japan was heralded as one of the most readable works on firearms ever produced. To arms collectors and scholars, it remains a prized source of information on Japanese handguns, their development, and their history. In this new Revised and Expanded edition, original author Harry Derby has teamed with Jim Brown to provide a thorough update reflecting twenty years of additional research. The authors have retained the format and much of the text of the original edition, focusing on military cartridge arms from the 1893-1945 period. Signal pistols, foreign-procured military handguns, ammunition, holsters, and accessories are also covered. Significant changes are included based on new findings, and a great deal of new information has been added, together with color illustrations of significant specimens. A number of newly discovered variants are identified and described, and expanded tables of reported serial numbers and production data are provided. Coverage and explanation of Japanese markings has been greatly enhanced, and a detailed study of inspection marks on the most widely known Types 14 and 94 is included. An appendix on valuation has also been added, using a relative scale that should remain relevant despite inflationary pressures. For the firearms collector, enthusiast, historian or dealer, this is the most complete and up-to-date work on Japanese military handguns ever written. Like its predecessor, it is certain to become a classic firearms reference and a benchmark for further research. ... Read more

Product Description
Here is a gold mine of information on American military history, exploring battles and soldiers, ships and weapons, services and doctrines--as well as the social and cultural impact of the U.S. military at home and around the world.

The Oxford Companion to American Military History boasts over 1,000 entries written by some 500 distinguished contributors. Readers will find Stephen E. Ambrose writing on the D-Day landing, James M. McPherson on the battle of Antietam, John Keegan on the changing experience of combat, Jean Bethke Elshtain on Jane Addams, Mark A. Noll on religion and war, and Robert M. Utley on Sitting Bull. Ranging from brief factual pieces to extensive essays, the entries examine every major war from the Revolution to the Persian Gulf; important battles from Bunker Hill, to the Alamo, Gettysburg, Little Bighorn, Normandy, and Khe Sanh; and military leaders from Washington to Grant, Lee, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Westmoreland, and Schwarzkopf. Moreover, the Companion goes well beyond the usual "drum and trumpet" coverage to examine a wide range of subjects you might not expect to find. There are entries on relevant acts of Congress and on diplomatic policies such as the Monroe Doctrine and the Marshall Plan;on peace and antiwar movements; on war in film, literature, music, and photography; and on war viewed through the disciplinary lenses of anthropology, economics, gender studies, and psychology. The result is the widest ranging account compiled in one volume of war, peace, and the U.S. military.

Boasting athoritative and vividly written entries, maps of several major wars, extensive cross-referencing, lists of further readings, and an index, this volume is the first place to turn for information on our nation's military history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Prize-Winning Reference Book
The Oxford Companion to American Military History has been awarded the Distinguished Reference Book Award by the Society for Military History in 2001.It has been the subject of several long and highly favorable reviews including those by Russell Weigley in the January 2001 issue of the "Journal of Military History," by Hew Strachan in the February 16, 2001 issue of "TLS, the London Times Literary Supplement," and by Vince Rinehart in April 9, 2000 issue of "The Washington Post's Book World."

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reference for military history buff.
This book is NOT a chronological book of American military history, but rather an encyclopedic reference with thousands of entries. No pictures- ...It covers topics including: all the major wars, battles, bios on military leaders, warfare methods, a survey of combat weapons and military hardware, political acts by Congress and treaties, overviews of the military structure and services. It features contributions by notaries like Stephen E. Ambrose and John Keegan... its coverage priorities are odd. The political-correctness bent comes out every now and then in this book...

3-0 out of 5 stars An Encyclopedia for US History
While the quality of the book seems good, the organization is unusual for a history book.It should be emphasized that this is a reference book set up like an encyclopedia on people, battles, and wars (listedalphabetically). It is NOT set up chronologically!

3-0 out of 5 stars be aware, a broad interpretation.
this is a very comprehensive reference, but its coverage priorities are odd.

for example, it devotes twice as much space to "gays and lesbians in the us military" as it does to the battle of gettysburg, which says it all about modern history really.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book.
I originally received this book by accident as an unwanted "feature selection" of a book club. However, I was so impressed with it that I decided to keep it. It contains mammoth entries on America's major wars, many small ones covering lesser known interventions by U.S. forcesthroughout the world (such as the expedition to Russia in 1918 to fight theBolsheviks), and biographical sketches of important American and foreignmilitary leaders. Most importantly, this book is fairly neutral andobjective when discussing any controversies. Its an excellent overview, andanyone interested in American military history will enjoy it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Step on the Way to Final Knowledge
This brief work was a step on the path to the height of knowledge on the subject. As one reviewer stated it was a stop on the way to completion of his masterwork, the Horse Soldier (c.f), a four volume set.
I admit to much ignorance about the soldier's horse equipment before and during the Civil War, reasonable knowledge of uniformolology since that time through the twentieth century, and claim expertise in the individual equipment used by all US services since 1900 (which includes late nineteenth century issue), and definite familiarity with being a soldier from service in the Cold War period between Korea and Vietnam, I do know my US Army.
I am mainly interested in above the saddle, that is, the soldier, his clothing and individual equipment; in modern terms, the fighting and subsistance loads.
So, whats's your point, sez you?; the point is this, I was a friend of his since since we first met in 1970. We bonded immediately and we coresponded often by snail mail.
Randy, unfortunately died, before the completion of Vol 4 of Horse Soldier; there were some errors in it just as there are some in this work. But 40 years on, the state of knowledge has increased with more hands on discoveries and archive digging and the wide dissemination of knowledge on the Internet. The web site of the Society of the Military Horse is full of detailed discussion and has presented much new information. It is now possible to discuss things in near real time rather than spend ten years writing letters and making night rate phone calls to find out who's doing what. So if you find errors, omissions, and other new discoveries post them on a discussion site.
And take a look at Douglas McChristian's recent works on the 1870s and 1880s.( c.f) Took him a long time to dig out all that from the various National Archives locations
(In the sixties, we worker bees whle on vacation usually only sampled the main collections located in DC and at Suitland Md.) A lot of that stuff was unindexed, much was unsorted, and some had been weeded as well; or left out of order by previous researches when copying was done.
So the quest for knowledge goes on, jump in and swim along with the rest of us.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good starting place, but significantly flawed.
One of the most popular sources of information regarding military saddleryyet published, it's hard to find an avid collector, historian, or similarlyobsessed person who doesn't have a copy on their shelf. Indeed, one mustput this book on their "Must Have" list. That said, this bookreally isn't the "end all" source of info. This book wasapparently apreliminary work, done before his "The HorseSoldier" series was published. Numerous saddle types are missing -artillery, pack and officers equipment are very lightly represented. Thereare some glaring mistakes, such as the total misidentification of the 1833dragoon saddle, and the representation of the Ringgold pattern dragoonsaddle. There are significant omissions, such as the four McClellan typesused from 1887-1904, as well as a scattering of minor errors throughout thetext and some drawing details. However, considering the scope of such aproject and what most readers will take away from it, it's not too bad. The one disappointing aspect of this book is the constant reissue by theUniv. of Oklahoma Press without any effort to correct the multitude oferrors this book sustains.I understand that Mr. Steffan willed the rightsto this publication to the publisher before his death, so there may be somedifficulties in actually doing this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the only comprehensive guide to this subject
I originally ordered this book because of my interest in the "McClellan" saddles that are practically synonomous with the US Cavalry. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book covers not only the McClellan series, but every single saddle ever authorized by the US Military. The book gives a narrative, the original design specs, detailed drawings of each saddle, and at least one drawing of each saddle pictured while mounted with horse and rider. The illustrations (by the author) are excellent, with great detail. This book is the only one I've been able to find that covers the subject of US Military Saddles, and I can't see it being surpassed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Volunteers Fight for Freedom
The author provides the background of the volunteer woodsmen who ranged and fought for the American colonies and later the United States, including Texas, from the 1600 to 1800's.These volunteers were called Rangers and fought using American Indian tactics of hiding behind cover, using raids to strike deep into enemy held territory, and firing accurately with long barreled rifles. The Rangers were all volunteers and were able to scout for valuable intelligence.Their one limitation in combat is not having a bayonet for their rifle, which made them very vulnerable to bayonet charges. The tactics of hiding behind cover and using accurate rifle fire, not massed musket fire, had a significant effect in breaking many regular British Army attacks in shooting officers and Sergeants.

What is interesting about this book is the distain that both British Army and Continental Army Generals, overall, had towards the "undisciplined" militia, to include the Rangers.Indian style fighting was considered dishonorable to the Regular Army.As a result of this bias, the Rangers were often not employed to their full ability with traditional regular formations being used to fight battles.

Another interesting topic was the brutality of war between Native Americans and the colonists/ United States. How all combatants would execute women and children, how the Natives would kidnap and torture their captives, how Americans would attack their neighbors.

Very informative book, didn't realize that Robert Rogers, a key figure in Ranger history, actually fought for the British in the American Revolution and later died a broken man, in debt, never recognized by the British for his service in the French and Indian War.

Product Description
Changing political relationships and a substantial increase in resources have prompted the Chinese leadership to accelerate the modernization of its armed forces. Observers, not least the United States, have wondered what objectives China's military buildup is meant to serve. The Chinese government's extreme secrecy about military budgets, force training, and weapon system procurement leaves considerable room for speculation. Perhaps naturally, China is believed to be preparing capacities for a possible conflict with Taiwan, which might or might not involve the United States. But other developments, like the modernization of strategic nuclear weapons and the acquisition of naval surface combatants, have raised the attention of analysts as to what role the Chinese armed forces will play in China's evolving security policy. This study provides an assessment of the current state of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). It addresses command structures, doctrine development, military spending, weapon system procurement, and the force structure of all four branches of the PLA. It does so by providing comparisons of current assessments of all aspects of PLA modernization and trend analyses that point out the developments in manpower, spending, and holdings of weapon systems, among others, over the past two decades. Thus, the volume seeks to lay a basis for a meaningful analysis of the role and trajectory of the Chinese military. ... Read more

Product Description

With global commitments and combat duty, our armed forces face life-threatening challenges on a daily basis. However, less visible threats also impact the mental health of our military men and women. Experts examine challenges on the battlefield, such as women coming to terms with life after being prisoners of war, or soldiers dealing with mistakenly killing civilians. But life in the armed forces presents less dramatic, daily challenges. Away from the front lines, soldiers have to raise their families, sometimes as single parents. Children have to learn what it's like to be in a military family, and to make sense of war. Gay or lesbian officers cope with a don't ask, don't tell policy. An unprecedented range of contributors—military officers, medical doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and professors—take us onto the bases and the battlefields and inside the minds of military personnel who face far greater challenges than most of us ever see in the headlines.

These volumes also highlight factors that make members of the military resilient and stable, as well as programs and practices that can ease the psychological burdens of military personnel, families, and children. Readers can better understand how society views our military and military operations, and how each one of us can play a role in supporting our armed forces.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated, but still informative
Since military hardware is in a constant state of enhancement, this non-fiction volume is a bit outdated, but it still contains a great deal of good information. One of the most readable of Clancy's nonfiction volumes, it still has a historical value. The longterm interview with a mid-level officer is one of the book's strong points. Know what your getting, but if you want a look at yesteryear's armored cav, this book can be valuable. If you're looking for more of the current state of affairs, find another source.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference material
Very good book to be used for technical reference. It is NOT a novel (a la "Hunt For Red October"), so if that is what you are looking for, look elsewhere.Fairly accurate, if a bit dated. A lot has happened since this book was published. The M8 AGS was never fielded, the 2d ACR-L is now a Stryker Brigade, both 2d ACR and 3d ACR have seen combat in Iraq and elements of 11th ACR are heading over, and the then CPT H.R. McMasters of E Troop, 2d ACR (see battle of 73 Easting) is now COL McMasters and the 71st Colonel of the 3d ACR.So Mr Clancy, you have a lot of catching up to do!Till then - "BRAVE RIFLES!"Aiee-yah.....

3-0 out of 5 stars Guided Tour series continues....
Like the other six books in the Guided Tour series, Tom Clancy and John D. Gresham take the reader on a behind-the-scenes field trip of a military unit. This time, the focus is on an Army armored cavalry regiment, its equipment and personnel, the history of armored cavalry, and two short fictional scenarios depicting the use of this type of unit in combat.

The one new feature (later included in all the later books) is a softball interview with now-retired General Fred Franks, former commander of the VII Corps during Desert Storm and later commander of TRADOC, Training and Doctrine Commmand.Although informative, Armored Cav is more of a love letter to the Army than an unbiased piece of reporting. Still, fans of Clancy and of military hardware should not pass this book (or any of this series)up. Just park high expectations at the roadside and you'll enjoy this for what it is, and not what it could have been.

3-0 out of 5 stars Average Work
If you have read any of the other books in the series then you know what to expect with this one. The book follows the familiar format, it details out the machinery used, the troops, the division make up of the topic in the armed forces, a few interviews and it ends with some fictionalized short stories describing the expected types of encounters this area would face in the future. All in all a basic book on the armored cavalry that gives you all the basics. The Clancy style of writing, lots of facts and plodding movement work well in this type of book given that you buy it to learn about the subject.

Overall it is a good effort and if you have been happy with the other books in the series you will enjoy this one.My only complaints were that there did not seam to be enough photos of the equipment for me.Sure they had all the main items, but I wanted a picture of every truck and tractor covered in the book. I also would have liked to have seen a comparison of the other counties main battle tanks - something he did with his Submarine and Aircraft Carrier books. And one last little complaint - what was with his ending every chapter with some junior high school type rah-rah cheer. We are talking about the military; do we need this type of comic book love-fest mentality?

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply great!
well, in first place i love clancy's non-fiction book, and this one is great! it makes a full review of a army's cavalry brigade organization and composition, and at the same time a review of all the heavy weaponry used by the US army, the tanks, armored transports, the artilery, well, just abou everything! if u want to learn all about that, just go running to buy this book, u'll love it... i did :) ... Product Description

The Diffusion of Military Power examines how the financial and organizational challenges of adopting new methods of fighting wars can influence the international balance of power. Michael Horowitz argues that a state or actor wishing to adopt a military innovation must possess both the financial resources to buy or build the technology and the internal organizational capacity to accommodate any necessary changes in recruiting, training, or operations. How countries react to new innovations--and to other actors that do or don't adopt them--has profound implications for the global order and the likelihood of war.

Horowitz looks at some of the most important military innovations throughout history, including the advent of the all-big-gun steel battleship, the development of aircraft carriers and nuclear weapons, and the use of suicide terror by nonstate actors. He shows how expensive innovations can favor wealthier, more powerful countries, but also how those same states often stumble when facing organizationally complicated innovations. Innovations requiring major upheavals in doctrine and organization can disadvantage the wealthiest states due to their bureaucratic inflexibility and weight the balance of power toward smaller and more nimble actors, making conflict more likely. This book provides vital insights into military innovations and their impact on U.S. foreign policy, warfare, and the distribution of power in the international system.
