Editorial Review

Product Description
Pulling together information previously scattered throughout numerous research articles into one detailed resource, Physical Metallurgy of Direct Chill Casting of Aluminum Alloys connects the fundamentals of structure formation during solidification with the practically observed structure and defect patterns in billets and ingots. The author examines the formation of a structure, properties, and defects in the as-cast material in tight correlation to the physical phenomena involved in the solidification and the process parameters.

The book draws on the author’s advanced research to provide a unique application of physical metallurgy to direct chill (DC) casting technology. He examines structure and defect formation— including macrosegregation and hot tearing. Each technology-centered chapter provides historical background before reviewing current developments. The author supports his conclusions with computer simulation results that have been correlated with highly progressive experimental data. He presents a logical system of structure and defect formation based on the specific features of the DC casting process. He also demonstrates that the seemingly controversial results reported in literature are, in fact, caused by the different ratio of the same mechanisms.

Compiling recent results and data, the book discusses the fundamentals of solidification together with metallurgical and technological aspects of DC casting. It gives new insight and perspective into DC casting research. ... Read more

Product Description
An advanced yet accessible treatment of the welding process and its underlying science.

Despite the critically important role welding plays in nearly every type of human endeavor, most books on this process either focus on basic technical issues and leave the science out, or vice versa. In Principles of Welding, industry expert and prolific technical speaker Robert W. Messler, Jr. takes an integrated approach—presenting a comprehensive, self-contained treatment of the welding process along with the underlying physics, chemistry, and metallurgy of weld formation.

Promising to become the standard text and reference in the field, this book provides an unprecedented broad coverage of the underlying physics and the mechanics of solidification—including peritectic and eutectic reactions—and emphasizes material continuity and bonding as a way to create a joint between materials of the same general class. The author supplements the book with hundreds of tables and illustrations, and correlates the science to welding practices in the real world.

Principles of Welding departs from existing books with its clear, unambiguous presentation, which is easily grasped even by undergraduate students, yet given at the advanced level required by experienced engineers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive description in welding technology
This is another book from Messler, the writer of Joining of Advanced Material. It encompasses most of the welding metallurgy of metals, chemistry of the weld pool (which is very rare in other welding books), andphysics of welding in detail. However, it doesn't go deep enough to thedescription about welding processes. Those who wish to read some detailsabout wedling processes need to look for other books. ... Read more

Product Description
Recently, our understanding of metals and metallurgy in the Early Bronze Age Aegean has been dominated by studies which focus on the circulation and provenance of metals. Over the last decade the study of early metallurgy in the Aegean has witnessed dramatic developments with ever earlier and more detailed evidence for metal production being discovered in the field. Paralleling these field studies are a wealth of new laboratory analyses relating to the material aspects of metal production. This diverse new data when coupled with recent theoretical approaches now allow for significant shifts in our understanding of this important aspect of Aegean prehistory. Since few studies of metallurgy have extended beyond typological analysis of artefacts, the circulation of raw materials and the detailing of technical processes, metallurgy in the Aegean Early Bronze Age was made a subject of discussion at the Sheffield Centre for Aegean Archaeology's Round Table. This volume contains fifteen papers which address aspects of mining smelting and artefact production from a range of theoretical perspectives. It represents the first publication of many of the key details from numerous newly discovered sites. Contributors include Yannis Bassiakos, Phillip Betancourt, Mihalis Catapotis, Peter M. Day, Nota Dimopoulou-Rethemiotaki, Roger Doonan, Myrto Georgakopoulou, Jim Muhly, Georgia Nakou, Olga Philaniotou-Hadjianastasiou, Sue Sherratt, Metaxia Tsipopoulou, Yiannis Papadatos and David E. Product Description
Due to unusually high operating temperatures, intense radiation, viscous slags, dense metals, and other factors, the design and operation of metallurgical processes is an especially demanding task. This volume describes the engineering principles involved in this industry, beginning with an introduction to the basic mechanisms of heat, mass, and fluid flow, while showing the origin of associated transport coefficients: diffusivity, conductivity, and viscosity. The discussions are supplemented with examples and exercises.Empirical techniques for modelling and process design are presented, followed by numerical techniques and computer programs needed for "ground-up" quantitative descriptions of typical metallurgical processes.A generous appendix provides a wealth of detail on the thermodynamic and physical properties of substances commonly encountered by metallurgists, while a short section on metallurgical thermodynamics illustrates the way these tabulations should be used. The paperback edition has been corrected and updated, while a new section on the numerical simulation of flow processes has been added. A key text for engineers, scientists, and students, this book offers a unique look at the rich variety of phenomena that govern the behavior and kinetics of metallurgical processing operations. ... Product Description
For many years, various editions of Smallman's Modern Physical Metallurgy have served throughout the world as a standard undergraduate textbook on metals and alloys. In 1995, it was rewritten and enlarged to encompass the related subject of materials science and engineering and appeared under the title Metals & Materials: Science, Processes, Applications offering a comprehensive amount of a much wider range of engineering materials. Coverage ranged from pure elements to superalloys, from glasses to engineering ceramics, and from everyday plastics to in situ composites, Amongst other favourable reviews, Professor Bhadeshia of Cambridge University commented: "Given the amount of work that has obviously gone into this book and its extensive comments, it is very attractively priced. It is an excellent book to be recommend strongly for purchase by undergraduates in materials-related subjects, who should benefit greatly by owning a text containing so much knowledge."

The book now includes new chapters on materials for sports equipment (golf, tennis, bicycles, skiing, etc.) and biomaterials (replacement joints, heart valves, tissue repair, etc.) - two of the most exciting and rewarding areas in current materials research and development. As in its predecessor, numerous examples are given of the ways in which knowledge of the relation between fine structure and properties has made it possible to optimise the service behaviour of traditional engineering materials and to develop completely new and exciting classes of materials. Special consideration is given to the crucial processing stage that enables materials to be produced as marketable commodities. Whilst attempting to produce a useful and relatively concise survey of key materials and their interrelationships, the authors have tried to make the subject accessible to a wide range of readers, to provide insights into specialised methods of examination and to convey the excitement of the atmosphere in which new materials are conceived and developed. ... That being said I will also tell you that this author really likes to use words that simply complicate an otherwise simple notion...thats irritating. He gets so caught up in it that run on sentences are prevalent and full of blah blah academia jargon. I think he wrote the book to be proud of it and not to convey information in a fluid fashion. 5-0 out of 5 stars So Much More Than an Account of Rare Earth Extraction
The title of this excellent book is a misnomer, as it covers far more than the beneficiation of rare earth ores. It is an up-to-date mini-encyclopedia on the lanthanides.

Gupta and Krishnamurthy begin with a historical survey of the discovery of each rare earth element. From then on, they describe the chemical properties of each REE in considerable detail. They also elaborate on the properties of the major REE-bearing minerals, followed by major types of REE-bearing deposits.

Gupta and Krishnamurthy engage in a nation-by-nation survey of REE production, and then make projections for the future. One may be surprised to learn that South Africa, currently a very modest producer of REE, has the potential to become the world's leader in this regard (p. 126).

The chapters on REE-ore beneficiation are very detailed. They include many helpful flow-charts to help the reader visualize the steps involved. There is also a chapter on the refining of rare earth metals.

Finally, there is extensive discussion of the many and growing application of rare earths. These include magnets, magnetic refrigeration, specialized alloys, superconductors, and much more.
