5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Arrived exactly as described
I was extremely happy with the seller. Book was in perfect condition, and arrived earlier than expected! Great seller to work with, would definitely buy from them again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Supplement
This textbook on materials science has thus far been a good and helpful supplement to my chemical engineering materials course. The concise explanations and full color illustrations have really helped me to fully grasp the material (no pun intended).

5-0 out of 5 stars Materials Science and Engineering book
Book was the one advertised in the picture, arrived in a reasonable amount of time, in great condition. Overall a successful transaction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should not be part of the course work for someone persuing a materials science degree
Don't waste your money. William D. Callister has rewritten this book into many editions, some of which occur under different titles. The price for this book also seems to be increasing disproportionately with the addition of valuable information (the book is just overpriced).I would recommend this book to anyone perusing a degree other then materials science. The book does provide a good amount of breadth and is a good reference if this is the only materials science course work that you will ever do.If you are a materials scientist then taking a class with this book as the primary text will only result in redundancy. The book is an overview of processing and properties that doesn't provide enough background theory and explanation to develop an understanding of materials science.I used this book in my sophomore year in my very first materials science class and it is my understanding that most other materials science programs use this book in the same fashion. The catch of the book is that until you have studied thermodynamics, crystallography, and mechanical properties in your later years of study this book only forces you to memorize rules, properties, and theories without understanding why or how such things exist. The book couldn't even be called a top down approach to materials science because it doesn't go down at all.All of the information in this book will be reiterated in later course work using other texts that will actually help you to understand in a more complete way the concepts of materials science.

3-0 out of 5 stars Material Science and Engineering
The book was in excellent condition and I paida good price. However, it was not what I thought it was - being a question and answer style college book. However, that was my fault.

Still glad I bought it though ... Read more

Product Description
Winner of the Best New Undergraduate Textbook Award from the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the American Association of Publishers! Exploring Engineering was developed to meet the need for a better way to introduce incoming engineering students to the fundamental concepts at the heart of all engineering disciplines. It was also created to show students in a vivid way the great array of opportunities and possibilities of today's engineering fields-from classical mechanical engineering to bioengineering and mechatronics. This is the first text to introduce nearly all of the major engineering areas, and to do so with a strong interdisciplinary case study approach. This approach better prepares and enables students to draw upon knowledge not only from their own particular field of expertise, but also from related or even distantly related engineering and technical and scientific fields, allowing them to become more versatile within their future employment.

Exploring Engineering is flexible enough to offer a variety of approaches to the introduction of modern engineering for new students, while still providing the most important essentials that hold all engineering disciplines together, particularly the mathematical, quantitative basis of engineering as well asthe modern computer tools that make today's engineering design so efficient and accurate.

* Introduces the fundamental physical, chemical, and material foundations for all engineering work, including motion, force, conservation of energy and matter
* Explains the workings of simple electrical circuits, computer logic, control and mechatronics, stress/strain diagrams, bioengineering, stoichiometry

2-0 out of 5 stars This info is all available for free online
I felt it was a waste of money. It was required for a class that I took. I didn't find anything that wasn't common sense or available for free online. It gives a very general overview and doesn't go into specific methods for design much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book in great condition

5-0 out of 5 stars Agem for lecturers and students
Covers topics in a highly interesting and real-world manner. The authors' teaching and engineering experience has been used to full effect. Readers will like the straightforward explanations, the many examples, and the student-friendly content. A good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Engineering Book, but not as a Textbook
This book is definitely vital to beginning engineers and people who are just interested in the topic. It explains many of the intracacies of project design and gives a complete process of how to complete an actual engineering project. Most likely this will be used as a textbook in universities, but should be accompanied with another book that more fully explains some of the terms. It is best used as a reference while working on a project or for later design classes. There is simply to much information to base tests on it. That said, the book is very thorough in explaining how to create a schedule, the various diagrams, charts and table, planning, the relationship between client, user and designer and how to complete the project on time and sucessfully. If you were not required to take an intro to engineering design class and are faced with ahigh level design class, this would be a great reference to use. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
From a student perspective, this book is harder to read than a foreign language. It is full of equations that have no practical examples and you're stuck with the homework problems that you can't figure out. The examples given in the book do not correlate with the homework problems and I spend most of my time on the internet or sitting in my teacher's room trying to figure out what the book wants. It appears to be a book that assumes you remember everything that you ever learned in all of your classes. The book is too small and it seems that more information could have been included to help students better remember how to find certain values for a set of equations relating to a signal. If you can talk your teacher into excluding this book from the class and just teaching the concepts you'll be better off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Need
For many years I have taught a graduate/undergraduate pair of courses, EE5811 and EE 5821 in biomedical instrumentation and modeling. The central challenge each semester is an idependent student investigation from concept to method to outcomes. Peer reviewed papers are the principal information sources and this text has a remarkable sense for filling in the gaps for a wide range of engineering and life science curricula.

Product Description

During the last decade, the state of the art in Earthquake Engineering Design and Analysis has made significant steps towards a more rationale analysis of structures. Scientists have long recognized that earthquake design is guided by displacements and deformations rather than forces. However due to the historical background of structural engineers in static analyses, effects of earthquake on structures have been viewed as forces acting on the structures. All presently available design building codes are developed along these lines. Our knowledge of ground motion characteristics, earthquake geotechnical engineering, structural behaviour (design and numerical analyses) and model tests have advanced to a point where it is possible to anticipate a significant move from force based design approaches to displacements based design approaches. Although displacement based analyses constitute the kernel of most research programs, they have not yet been incorporated in the state of practice.

The purpose of the book is to review the fundamentals of displacement based methods, starting from engineering seismology, earthquake geotechnical engineering, to focus on design, analysis and testing of structures with emphasis on buildings and bridges.

Product Description

An overall view of the vast spectrum of knowledge needed by practicing rocket scientists and engineers, Introduction to Rocket Science and Engineering presents the history and basics of rocket theory, design, experimentation, testing, and applications. It covers an array of fields, from advanced mathematics, chemistry, and physics to logistics, systems engineering, and politics.

The text begins with a discussion on the discovery and development of rockets as well as the basic principles governing rockets and rocket science. It then explains why rockets are needed from economic, philosophical, and strategic standpoints and looks at why the physics of the universe forces us to use rockets to complete certain activities. Exploring how rockets work, the author covers the concepts of thrust, momentum, impulse, and the rocket equation, along with the rocket engine, its components, and the physics involved in the generation of the propulsive force. He also presents several different types of rocket engines and discusses the testing of rocket components, subsystems, systems, and complete products. The final chapter stresses the importance of rocket scientists and engineers to think of the unusual, unlikely, and unthinkable when dealing with the complexities of rocketry.

Taking students through the process of becoming a rocket scientist or engineer, this text supplies a hands-on understanding of the many facets of rocketry. It provides the ideal foundation for students to continue on their journey in rocket science and engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Direct and simple, the way it should be
I have recently bought this book in order to learn some basics about rockets, expecting a far more simple text. After reading the whole book, I cannot say I have missed part of my pretty precious spare's time. This is, indeed, one of the most concise and pretty accurate applied's science book I have ever read, and I have read a few now. Don't be afraid of the book's thickness, as someone else stated before, it treats tons of differents fields involved in rocket's design and operation. You should be used to basics physics, and general engineering knowledge to get the point the book tries to reach.

Simple in concept and expected to be more a student's text book than a hard science's book, if you have technical knowledge and have little idea about rockets, this book covers almost everything to design one.

There are, of course, tons of other issues not covered in this book, like pump's cavitation, special equipments for cryo requirements, and so on, but, again, I should state that the latest isn't possible without the previous.

I have enjoyed a lot this book, and I am just a "freak" who enjoys technology in general, including hard science books. Considering that, I highly recommend that book, and it is worth the money it cost.

Remember one thing, and it is the book's title. As it states, it is an introduction, so expect basics on topic. This way, book fully satisfied the title, and surpasses it by far.

4-0 out of 5 stars A broad but interesting overview
This book is an overview. There is no way you can go into depth on the material needed in 300 pages. This is no popular science book either. You need to be familiar with astronomy, physics (mechanics in particular), advanced math through calculus and differential equations, and even some chemistry to get the most from this book. It does try to balance some pretty good explanations with some examples, and there are exercises at the end of each chapter. Don't expect to be an expert at the end of the book. In fact, I'd say believing that you've been bombarded with enough material that you feel somewhat lost would be a good sign. The point of the book is to give you a feel for the kinds of calculations and sciences that are involved in rocket design so that you can decide if studying these topics in depth is for you. The book does show the author's love of the subject as he discusses motivations and even the kind of "dreamer" that the budding rocket scientist should be. You shouldn't be the type that looks at every problem and sees only limitations. Recommended for the upper level undergraduate physicist or engineer.

The table of contents for this book is hard to come by so I show that next.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
This book was in good physical condition and was shipped to me within a few days. But some of the pages do have highlighter marks, so it's not perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks I've used
This book contains tons of useful information on almost everything regarding mechanical properties of materials. It isn't overly dense with formulas and derivations, nor is it overly simplified. The explanations are extremely well-written and the book is well-organized; clearly separating theory from practical applications (nearly half the book is about processing and testing). Examples are well-integrated into the text, not set off to the side.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very conceptual and useful to metallurgy understanding
This book brings very important principles of metallurgy and moreover usefull concepts to design products based on the worthy knowledge presented. Particularly the chapters about Fatigue, Fracture and Stresses Calculations in my opinion are of such importance to design robust products. The author is very didatic which makes the reading pleasant, of easy learning and application.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
This book is a good one on metallurgy. It's loaded as it taps into several references. It's discourse is simple to the beginner and a good summary to the pro. I see it on the shelves of some academics I visit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Metallurgical Excellence
If you are a Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial Engineer, you will need this book somewhere down the road. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!
My teacher was sucky, so I relied very heavily on the textbook. Also, having the solutions manual helped a great deal. I was able to purchase the solutions manual by emailing zmanual(at)gmail(dot)com. Best of luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Thermal Systems Engineering
Everything was great. The only thing was they didn't tell my anything about if they shipped it or not.So I had no idea when it was coming and could not track the shipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for introduction to thermal systems
This book is written by the leaders in each of the three areas of thermal systems engineering and it really shows.Keep in mind this is an introductory book and does not cover every part of each topic, but for an introductory class it is perfect!Concepts are easy to understand with very good supporting examples.I would highly recommend this book to anyone needing a brush up or a good introduction to thermal systems. ... Product Description
Dieter's Engineering Design 4/e represents a major update of this classic textbook for senior design courses. As in previous editions, Engineering Design provides a broader overview of topics than most design texts and contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design. Dieter focuses on material selection as well as how to implement the design process.

Engineering Design provides the senior mechanical engineering students with a realistic understanding of the design process. It is written from the viewpoint that design is the central activity of the engineering profession, and it is more concerned with developing attitudes and approaches than in presenting design techniques and tools.

Engineering Design provides a realistic understanding of the engineering design process. The book presents in detail (Chapters 1 through 9) an eight-step process that gives prescriptive guidance to the student from problem definition through detail design.Chapters 10 through 16 present more specific treatment of speciality topics (design for X).The text is intended to be used in either a junior or senior engineering course with an integrated hands-on design project. ...
