5-0 out of 5 stars Germany's equivalent to the Mark's Handbook
Dubbel's classic handbook is a must for German engineer's.It is a handbook which is meant to be used everyday by design engineers.Loaded with useful tables and graphs, this book could serve as the only book on your desk.It treats structural mechanics and thermo-fluid design with equal weight. There are also a very good sections on manufacturing processes, material selection, and system design.Dubbel's Handbook for Mechanical Engineering stands out above all of the rest in the treatment of forming and bending. The Germans pioneered these processes and when you try to find literature on the subject, you will find yourself chasing down an old German journal article. Now there is a place to find the every day equations for bending and forming. This book can best be described as a Machinery's Handbook with thermo-fluids and all the theoretical equations. The only flaw in this gem of a book is that size of the print may be a bit small for engineers over forty.Bottom Line: Must Buy. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference for mechanical design
It is a very good book. Gives a broad explanation of failure considerations in the mechanical design process. It is complemented with examples that help to understand. It is a very technical book. Do not expect to pretty color pictures. Math is stated in a sequential way that can be undestood pretty easily. When disscussing a topic recalls some basics before touching partcular details. It is not an introductory book. A book on mechanical of materials would be a excellent complement. Excellent as a reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent book, but not my first pick
This book has a lot of information, no doubt about it.And you may findsome things in it that you'll be hard-pressed to find elsewhere (such asnon-linear damage theories, fretting, shock and impact, etc). However, thebook is quite theoretical, and information is scattered over variouschapters, sometimes making it difficult to find what you're looking for. And when you do find it, the information is often not presented in aprecise and detailed manner, which is important whenever you attempt toextend theory to real-life problems.I found this to be the case with thestrain-based fatigue discussion, and especially the fracture mechanicscoverage, which is cursory at best.I recommend that you first check outDowling's book ("Mechanical Behavior of Materials").I havefound it to be much more useful. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than his lectures
This book is just bad.Like calculus, statics is one of the most crucial courses for an engineering student and if you don't truly learn the material, the road ahead will be tough. This book will not help you. There are three aspects to this book: informational material (5%), example problems (45%), end of section problems (50%).It can feel like some of the sections with informational material, can fit on an index card.

The author has taken the approach of "Learning by doing" and as such, there are loads of example problems. Some sections talk about a given principle for less than half a page and then have 6+ pages of example problems. This would be an excellent thing, however the explanations on the applicaton of the principles in an example is curt and almost always a re-hash of the already very brief paragraphs in the "informational" section. This leads you to spend most of your time just trying to follow the logic (which isn't explained) in the example problem at which point your statics class becomes more of a self-taught experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great price Great condition
The book arrived quickly and was in excellent condition, cost was great too, about half the price I would have paid at our campus book store

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Thourough Statics Text
The greatest feature of this book is the generous use of examples throughout. For every type of problem, there is some close example that you can refer to.

Even though I didn't particularly enjoy the class forwhich this text was assigned, I think that the book itself is a greatresource, and should be recognized as so. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Book - But photos could be printed better
This is an excellant book.I have an earlier version from the 1950's and both are invaluable resources at work. The text and line figures in the book are printed well, but the print quality of the photos is very marginal.I was surprized to see such poor quality in a brand new book.I think they are using the cheapest process available to make the book. However, it is still worth getting since the information is so well prepared and valuable for those who do gear design.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference material to have
This book is a good one to keep in your library. As is covers topics of gear design, manufactring and touches a bit on the failure mechanism of the gear.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard reference on gear engineering
One of my two favorite gear books (the other being Drago's Fubdamentals of Gear Design). The 1983 edition is thorough, comprehensive and very readable for a reference book. Surprisingly for an American book of that time, it covers the metric system and standards (ISO, etc.) used in Europe and elsewhere. While the technical standards used in the book have been updated/replaced, it is still current in many areas and lays a solid conceptual basis for gear design.

I was tempted to buy the 1994 edition, but I browsed through it and did not find significant additions--and the printing quality was poor (as other reviewers pointed out). Still buying either edition is a first basic step for those interested in gear design.

Dudley has also written other widely read books in the field like the 1954 edition of this book and the 1962 Gear Handbook (as editor).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book at its time
This book was probably the best you could buy for introducing gear technology in 1983 (and probably still is). The only problem is that it is scanned pages from the original so all pictures are poor, especially pictures of gear failures cant be copied. At some pages there are also small white dots that covers the text but they are not so many that you get disturbed by them.
If this book would have been a reprint of the original and not scanned it would have been a killer. I do wish for this book to be updated to modern standards.
Anyway, it is still worth the money and should not be missing from a gear designers bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars The printing quality is poor, try to find the 1984 original
The book contents might be excellent. I regreted to
buy the copy by CRC press. It seems to me that CRC press
photocopied the original 1984 version by McGraw-Hill.
The pictures looks terrible.

I recommend to purchase the copy by the other press. ... Read more

Product Description
The traditional approach to teaching mechanical engineering has been to cover either mechanics or thermofluid mechanics. In response to the growing trend toward more general modules, Foundations of Mechanical Engineering provides a unified approach to teaching the basic mechanical engineering topics of mechanics, the mechanics of solids, and thermofluid mechanics.

Each chapter provides a systematic approach to the subject matter and begins with a list of aims and concludes with a summary of the key equations introduced in that chapter. Copious worked examples illustrate the correct approach to problem solving, and outline solutions for all of the end-of-chapter problems let students check their own work. The authors have judiciously minimized the mathematical content and where necessary, introduce the fundamentals through diagrams and graphical representations.

With complete basic coverage of both statics and dynamics, the mechanics of solids, fluid flow, and heat transfer, Foundations of Mechanical Engineering forms and ideal text for first-year mechanical engineering students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book...
This book is very handy for my Engineering Innovation class! This book provides very useful information for not only engineering design, but also for other things too.For example, one chapter provides very helpful information about presenting designs in both oral and written forms, which is really nice. The book is very detailed and has an easy-to-understand format which makes taking notes and applying them to class discussion, projects, etc. so much easier! I think this book would be helpful for anyone in Engineering, and not just the people taking the class. It was so nice to get it for the price I did too. At my school's book store it would have cost a fortune! It is in almost brand new condition and doesn't have any marks. (yeaa for books in good condition!)

4-0 out of 5 stars purchased for senior design
This book is the format for my capstone design class. We had three assignments based on some design documents the text suggested. These were alright, but not overly helpful in guiding nor progressing our design. The other chapters, like the one on group management, were more helpful.Design is a difficult process to generalize or outline. The author does a good job with that part of it.I didn't care as much for the 'emotional' side of things, not because the information was false or unhelpful, but because the ideas are difficult to convey to engineers.Overall, this text guides the design process well. ... Product Description

Encyclopedias describe Mechanical Engineering as a professional engineering discipline that involves the application of principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. It requires a solid understanding of key concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics and energy. Mechanical engineers use these principles and others for example in the design and analysis of automobiles, aircrafts, heating and cooling systems, industrial equipment and machinery. In addition to these main areas, specialized fields are offered at universities to prepare future engineers for their position in industry, such as: mechatronics and robotics, transportation and logistics, cryogenics, fuel technology, automotive engineering, biomechanics, vibration, optics and others.

Accordingly, the Springer Handbook of Mechanical Engineering devotes its contents to these areas of interest for the practicing engineer as well as for the student at various levels and educational institutions.

Authors from all over the world have contributed with their expertise and support the globally working engineer in finding a solution for today’s mechanical engineering problems.

This is a great book.I think I prefer the earlier editions because they are more based on metals

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This textbook reads more like an encyclopedia than a normal textbook. The presentation of the material is very thorough and accurate yet assumes a reader more mature in the material.I am using the text in a materials behavior course as a senior in mechanical engineering and many of my classmates have come to similar conclusions. Both my professor for the course and another in the same field also agreed the text is probably better suited as a reference rather than a stand-alone teaching tool.Overall, excellent text but maybe more useful for a more learned reader than I.

Many of the explanations used in the book were well written but a bit hard to understand.Equations jump out of nowhere without any elaboration and the problems asked at the end come with no supplement or explanation in the chapter to help you out.I mostly had to look up the subjects on wikipedia to really get a better understanding of much of the material.Although I acknowledge this to be a book for an upper division class, so I'm not too disappointed overall with it, seeing as how I've already taken the introductory course to material sciences and it was my fault for really forgetting the minor details needed to fully comprehend the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong on Fracture, weaker on Deformation details
I bought this book for a one-credit course at Virginia Tech and hardlyever used it.That, I believe, chiefly reflects excellent teachingmethodology and not insufficiency of this book.

Back in Switzerland, Itook a big, long course in deformation and fracture mechanics at the SwissFederal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, and all of a sudden this bookcame in handy for extra illustrations and alternative explanations.Whileit is particularly excellent when treating fracture and devotes much spaceto this subject, deformation mechanics are often simplified or containomissions in the derivation.Unfortunately, my course went into furtherdetail than Dr. Hertzberg's book, so for the interesting details ondeformation (e.g. a good explanation of the Lüders Bands) I must searchelsewhere.

However, readers will appreciate the last chapter of casestudies, which is instructive and sometimes even humorous (though it mightrequire black humor to find a bursting tank of molasses funny).

Inshort, if you're into things that break, this book will make you happy.Ifyou want to know what happens before, this book will help, but won't by anymeans be exhaustive. ... Read more

Product Description
This innovative book uses unifying themes so that the boundaries between thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics become transparent. It begins with an introduction to the numerous engineering applications that may require the integration of principles and tools from these disciplines. The authors then present an in-depth examination of the three disciplines, providing readers with the necessary background to solve various engineering problems. The remaining chapters delve into the topics in more detail and rigor. Numerous practical engineering applications are mentioned throughout to illustrate where and when certain equations, concepts, and topics are needed.

A comprehensive introduction to thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer, this title:

  • Develops governing equations and approaches in sufficient detail, showing how the equations are based on fundamental conservation laws and other basic concepts.
  • Explains the physics of processes and phenomena with language and examples that have been seen and used in everyday life.
  • Integrates the presentation of the three subjects with common notation, examples, and problems.
  • Demonstrates how to solve any problem in a systematic, logical manner.
  • Presents material appropriate for an introductory level course on thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
Not too bad of a textbook. It's the only thermo class that I need so it's pretty basic.I recommend having a basic fluid mechanics class to understand a few of the concepts in this book, but it's not critical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy Textbook
I studied chemical engineering as an undergraduate over 15 years ago.I am working on a masters degree in thermal fluids engineering. This text was used for a review/ramp course that covered some thermodynamics, some fluid mechanics and some heat transfer. The concept of teaching these subjects in an integrated course with an integrated textbook is new (to me at least). If you don't like this integrated pedagogy, you will likely find many faults with the book. When solving real world engineering problems, I find the most useful skill is to combine knowledge from multiple disciplines and integrate them.A lot of my undergraduate curriculum went into heavy derivations and details that have not been very useful in my career as an engineer. However, learning the key concepts from each subject, and then combining to solve interdisciplinary problems is very valuable to me.The trade-offs for this text and for this integrated approach is the sacrifice of detail and rigor. The sections on thermodynamics were spot-on for the key concepts that mechanical engineers would need, but would be totally inadequate for chemical engineers (no mention of fugacity or activity, no development of equations of state, no coverage of chemical potential, etc.)The sections on fluid mechanics were practical and handy for actually solving flow in conduits and external flow problems; they also provided good physical descriptions of the phenonmena, but they were clearly lacking in rigor in development and derivation. Also, no coverage of dimensional analysis and similarity, turbomachinary nor compressible flow were included. That would be appalling to a fluids expert, but still enough of the general concepts were conveyed to facilitate learning those other areas from other sources. The heat transfer sections were very good at convering a lot of subjects with minimal pages. In the few chapters on HT, I can find almost all of the steady state conduction, transient conduction, convection, correlations for Nusselt numbers, and radiation that are covered in a 900 page text dedicated to HT alone. All in all this is a very efficient text.I found this textbook to be very good at it's intended purpose. However, for more complete coverage of any of the three topics dedicated textbooks would be needed.Depending on your needs and your curriculum this book could be ideal or just frustrating.By the way, I found it very handy to have all the appendices that contain the thermophysical properites for solids, liquids and gases in one book.I use the tables quite frequently for other classes and work related calculations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect introduction
Fundamentals of Nuclear Science and Engineering is a perfect introduction to the field. It starts gently enough so that anyone with a basic high school understanding of chemistry and physics can easily pick up the quantitative and qualitative ideas behind the operations of subatomic particles. The graphics are an appropriate companion to the text and the indices and appendices are extremely useful for performing calculations. The only potential downside would regard the end of chapter problems tending towards a "plug and chug" nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplifying nuclear physics and engineering
This book is pure fun to read... easy to follow, clearly written, and full of cool graphs. It invokes the engineer, physicist, and statistician in you all at once. If for nothing else but having fun, you should get a copy and read it.

But wish it wasn't so expensive. ... Read more
