Product Description

Encourage your kids to express their creativity as they discover, collect, sort, arrange, experiment, and think with found and recyclable “stuff.” The real-life experiences of teachers and children will inspire ideas that you can try at home: choose objects and turn them into a display, transform materials into a face, build and glue wood scraps to make constructions. Appropriate for children four years of age and older.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasure trove of ideas for preschool teachers
This book contains many ideas for storing and using things that we ordinarily throw away! It makes one stop and think before discarding anything at all. We have found our children using these "findings" in a myrisd of ways - time after time. After the initial "collecting" we have found that the collection was so large that we have not "collected" again for two years, and still have a great variety of materials. Goes to show that one does not need many of the expensive items in the catalogs in order to have interesting materials for teaching children!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book for early childhood teachers, especially those interested in the Reggio Approach.Fast reading and well worth the cost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring
If you are working with early childhood are children, this book is a wonderful resource! I plan to put many of the ideas into practice. Teaching kids to see beauty in common objects is an important lesson along with the idea that art can be created from anything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple but good

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information, difficult to understand
This textbook was required for a materials science course as part of my Mechanical Engineering curriculum in college. Although the text contains a vast amount of useful information, it falls very short on explanation. If you are trying to learn (and understand) materials science, I do not recommend getting this book.

If you would like a good reference book on materials science, this book has been very helpful in that respect.

3-0 out of 5 stars its a book
Yup its a book... so far I feel it is not that clear at times but gets the job done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Are there better books than this?
This book is okay. It has a lot of important information in it, and good examples, but they are pretty well hidden among the unnecessary gibber. It's a good book, however I didn't really use it much, other than doing problems and the example problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Tries hard, but missing some essentials
This book tries hard to be clear, providing summaries, a glossary, and boldfacing terminology. I surmise that this book is written for people with little to no background in chemistry, physics, or mechanics of materials, because few things are derived from first principles. For instance, the crystal structures (rock salt, zinc blende, cesium chloride, etc.) presented in Chapter 3 are...well...just "presented," without any plausible explanation for their occurrance. It was as if their sole presence was to memorize them, without basing them in any sort of first principles. Quickly do I grow bored from books such as these, and, worse yet, no concepts really sink in. It was not until I read the excellent Materials text written by Callister that I understood at least one theory as to why these specific structures occur (ionic charge and ionic radii), and the concepts sank in.

Sorry, Dr. Shackleford, but until I see things derived from first principles, they do not sink in for me. Perhaps, however, a person working in industry would better benefit from such a text. Since this book is titled, specifically, as "...for scientists and engineers," I unabashedly assign two stars to this book. If a later edition came out with better explanations and theories (as described above) I would be happy to read it and rescind this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Material Science

5-0 out of 5 stars Torts casebook
Thank you for sending this book as soon as you received my order. Everything looks great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for Casebook, however, the coverage after cases is sometimes spotty.
Covers good range of issues and selected cases well. However, the explanations after each case can be lacking at times. One of the better casebooks, especially for torts. The examples frequently following cases are highly useful and the coverage of topics is superb. Supplements definitely help but this is one casebook where they are not completely needed.

I used various supplements for this class. Before buying all of them, I would go to your law library and look them over, use them for your class and see if they are presented in a way that works for you.My biggest mistake was thinking by using supplements I would learn less or get screwed up.Professors tell you whether they like supplements or not, but if you use them to prepare for class, still at least go through the cases and take NOTES from what they say, you will do far better.

I will explain the supplements I used and how I studied for class and the final. This was by far the best professor I have ever had, using hypos and working through them in class frequently. She taught like many of the supplements, which is why I relied on them less here then in other classes.

First and foremost, Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts keyed to Prosser, 11e is keyed to this casebook. This means the supplement follows along with your casebook and cases. In the first semester I read Understanding Torts to get a more in depth and overall explanation of the material covered. At times if my class covered less I would switch to Acing Tort Law (Acing Law School) for a conceptual overview. Then I used Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts for an overview of the assigned material. Then I did the assigned reading, which was much easier with Emanuel Law Outlines: Torts keyed to Prosser, 11e because it is keyed to the casebook (switched to this halfway through 1st semester).Next I took brief notes to work out an outline for the steps used to analyze fact patterns. Here, Acing Torts is particularly helpful because it has a great checklist (see my review because it is arranged oddly in the book).Last I scanned the relevant chapter in The Forms and Functions of Tort Law, 3d (Concepts and Insights) (Abraham) to get some policy reasons for my notes. The key with this book was understanding why Courts created a law or why they decide certain ways in a case.If in a policy based class this book is essential. After class I quickly ran through my notes and organized them a bit into a rough outline (10-15 mins). Then on the weekend I would work on hypos she gave and use The Law of Torts: Examples & Explanations, Third Edition to work through more confusing topics and practice writing hypos.

By 2nd semester I used the Understanding book less and less because I picked up on the material quicker.I relied heavily on Acing Torts and Emanuel (using Abraham for bits of great policy arguments).

These books collectively were not necessary, but they helped. If short on cash, the books from most helpful to least are your required casebook, Emanuel (especially if keyed), Acing Torts, Understanding Torts (1st semester and half of 2nd), E&E, and Abraham. However, some prefer E&E for explanation over Understanding.Last, is Crunchtime (this includes only portions of the full outline). Also, I have used Siegel's Torts: Essay and Multiple-Choice Questions and Answers from the library for practice in other classes, which may be preferable for many people.

See my other reviews regarding the above books mentioned. However, only the first couple paragraphs will be different.

Good Luck, I will try and answer any comments!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why do law professors still insist on using this?
No case book is going to clearly explain the law. I can accept that we (law students) are supposed to be extract the law from a series of cases decided ages ago in states in which we will never set foot because, um, well, that's the way law professors have always taught it. But this text stands apart from other case books I've had in that it seems to go out of its way to be as confusing, unhelpful and as much of a time-sink as possible.

Let's walk through how it does this. Suppose you're a law student in your first semester. Your torts professor has asked you to throw down $150 for this book and start reading. You start from the first page of a given chapter, reading and diligently briefing each case, which has been edited to better communicate the basic point. You're confident you've picked out the rule, and, having mucked through the court's analysis, you know how and why that rule exists. You go to the Notes after the case, only to read that the case you've just read represents a rule used in only a few jurisdictions -- the "minority rule." You ask, so what's the MAJORITY rule -- the one that will be on the exam? Well, the two sentences comprising Note #13 are asking YOU the same thing, and what's more they're instructing you to "See the case of Smith v. Jones," which as luck would have it, is not in the case book. You have to go to your law library or log into your Westlaw account, search for Smith vs. Jones, read the UNEDITED version of it and figure out the majority rule for yourself. And, as we all know, law students have all the time in the world to wile away the hours chasing down an elusive rule for one very narrow point of law.

Granted, this doesn't happen with each of the 300-odd cases contained herein. But it happens enough times to generate enough confusion such that you have to ask your professor, who (because he IS a law professor) answers your question with a series of questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, great outline
The book came on time, it was in very good condition, and it included an outline that was very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference guide for print designers
This book is a great resource for print designers. It covers many areas--from the different media to which printing technique will achieve quality results--this book covers it all. The case studies (the majority of the book)are well picked to show different methods of how multiple materials and unit closures can be put to use in different manners. The material is a little dry and straight forward, but if you are into hardcore learning about printing, this is definitely worth the read and to keep in your reference library. Definitely a good buy for print designers looking to expand beyond white paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Surprisingly useful and good book! I have low expectations of books that look like this, and of college 2nd year textbooks (After you stop using the pretty ones that were also used in high school AP classes). This book is not in color, but I love the organization and the simple yet detailed explanations. It has an index which is awesome. I love reading this textbook. (compared to the x-ray diffraction by cullity textbook that is also required for my Materials Science class on Atomic Structure). Everything is written in an understandable way. I suck at chemistry and haven't taken it for 2years but this book was great for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars wierd
it is so wierd to me how Kira cheats death in every book. also you kind see what is going to happen before it happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
im glad i bought this book. i would read it again. i couldnt believe the jealousy of Nikki. well thats the way it is @ times. but i wish wifey wouldnt have put so much trust in the men in her life. all the signs were there but yet she chose not to listen to them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kira VS. Nikki
Determined to start fresh Kira and Nikki relocate to Houston, Texas and jointly open a new hair salon. Everything goes smoothly and eventually Nikki and Kira meet African brothers and night club proprietors Bintu and Fatu. Before long Fatu sweeps Kira off of her feet with his sexy chivalrous demeanor and riches while Nikki glares from the sidelines extremely jealous. Fatu and Kira get engaged only three months into dating and that's when all hell breaks loose! Nikki decides Fatu should be hers and pulls every trick from under her sleeve to try to make that reality. Behind her cousin's back, she is soon sleeping with him, receiving expensive gifts from him, and maybe even spending a little of his fortune but who has who wrapped around their finger? The answer truly surprised me. Nikki dives lower than I would have ever expected in this installment. I've disliked her this entire series, and knew she was a dummy but honestly I still expected a little more from her character. It was very entertaining to see Kira and Nikki go head to head throughout this novel but the entire time I kept thinking, "Who are these women and where are the REAL Kira and Nikki?" We all know Kira is the baddest roughest toughest and Nikki is the weak pathetic wanna be so why did Nikki one up Kira so many times? Totally inconsistent with the last three books I must say. I also admit that I am again disappointed in Kira. She was presented to us from the get go as extremely street smart but all that is obviously out that window. She lets too many suspicious things slide mentioning that she will deal with them later and never even picks up on that fact that Nikki hates her until it is too late. This hood tale turned murder mystery will have you frustrated, pissed off, and on the edge of your seat. It isn't the greatest but is still a must read if you have already started this series.

Kiki Swinson's writing, in certain aspects, has been very reliable in this series. The over the top unrealistic situations are unfluctuating along with the quick ending, unanswered questions, gold digging method of operating, bird brains, and never learn anything personas these women seem to cling to. Hey, at least she is consistent. . . sometimes.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love the Wifey's series
I love the wifey's series. All 4 books was good. This book had me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for the 5th book to come out. That Nikki was a trip. I love Kira and I am happy she did not die, but I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Can you be my wifey"
This 4th installment was actually pretty good! I loved the fact that the story took place in my hometown so therefore I could relate and visualize the places more clearly.Kiki did a wonderful job with the 2 main characters as well as bringing new characters into play this made the story a little more refreshing and new! This book could indeed stand on its on.The author gets better and better with each book that she puts out and I cant wait till Wifey 4 Life is released in 2010!! ... Product Description

In antiquity and the Middle Ages, memory was a craft, and certain actions and tools were thought to be necessary for its creation and recollection. Until now, however, many of the most important visual and textual sources on the topic have remained untranslated or otherwise difficult to consult. Mary Carruthers and Jan M. Ziolkowski bring together the texts and visual images from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries that are central to an understanding of memory and memory technique. These sources are now made available for a wider audience of students of medieval and early modern history and culture and readers with an interest in memory, mnemonics, and the synergy of text and image.

The art of memory was most importantly associated in the Middle Ages with composition, and those who practiced the craft used it to make new prayers, sermons, pictures, and music. The mixing of visual and verbal media was commonplace throughout medieval cultures: pictures contained visual puns, words were often verbal paintings, and both were used equally as tools for making thoughts. The ability to create pictures in one's own mind was essential to medieval cognitive technique and imagination, and the intensely pictorial and affective qualities of medieval art and literature were generative, creative devices in themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories are made of this
Take a look to see the kinds of images and tricks used by your ancient ancestors to remember massive amounts of all sorts of information. The medieval arts of memory are really ancient memory arts derived from the ancient Greeks and adapted to medieval purposes. The subject matter is therefore (what else?) religious, but the principles are the same. These arts cannot be learned by the application of general rules alone. Examples are needed and are supplied here in abundance. The arts are immediate and individual and need the application of the individual imagination in order to work effectively. The mnemonic image I like the best is penance. It is a seraph that is quite imposing when seen as a whole and almost seemingly impossible to memorize. But, because it is logically arranged and lends itself to narrative clues and cues, the thirty visual components of penance become clear and easy to recall. Thus penance becomes a easily assimilated doctrine, not a gaseous cloud of ideas, and something indisipensible to any twelfth-century reader striving for holiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars medieval memory is more modern than you might think . . .
This approach to memory explains how so many illiterate folk were able to present stories and often volumes of information without textual backup. We always seem to think of the "mid ages" betwixt the ROMANS (wow!) and the Renaissance as ignorant and "dark." It is only our lack of information that allows us to do so. This volume fills in many of the crevices, with little-known textual material.
I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Handy resource with a few caveats
"The Medieval Craft of Memory: An Anthology of Texts and Pictures" is a valuable resource for the independent scholar interested in Medieval thought and mnemonic techniques. As a companion to Mary Carruther's other book "The Book of Memory" it is a welcome complement. It is of especial interest for the partially educated (as most of us are in these academic dark ages) as the selections are translated from Latin. Many of the original works are extremely difficult to find outside specialised libraries, so this book also is a tremendous time-saver. It is particularly useful as source for finding other works, as some of the selections are only partial. Of course, this would necessitate a knowledge of Latin. It would have been nice to have the Latin as well, but one can't have everything.

For those interested in what authors the work selects from, they are as follows: Hugh of St. Victor, Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas, Frances Eiximenis, Thomas Bradwardine, John of Metz, Jacobus Publicius, and an anonymous author. The mnemonic device of the Guidonian Hand is also given, but it is an illustration. Each author and selection is introduced with introductions of varying lengths. A general introduction begins the book as a whole, which is frequently useful (it is imperfect, but one can overlook that due to the value of the selected texts). A bibliography and index close the work.

An appendix that includes brief selections from two texts from late antiquity, namely Consultus Fortunatianus's "On Memory" and C. Julius Victor's "On Memory" is also included.

The greatest aggravation this book possesses is its brevity. In 311 pages it covers 14 authors, and at times the selections simply seem too short. Further, both St. Thomas's and St. Albert's commentaries on Aristotle's "On Memory and Recollection" require one two acquire a copy of Aristotle's original work, which is not included yet is needed to truly comprehend the commentaries. It is not difficult to find, but it is still a minor aggravation.

As a whole, however, this book is extremely useful. It is not light reading, however, as it is a scholarly work and one should be prepared to work a little when one reads it. It is excellent for the medievalist, the enthusiast of mnemonics, historians of thought, and those simply interested in how well people can actually think and remember and how to go about training themselves to do so. At times the tone of the academic preambles of the editors are a little too dismissive of the medievals's values, but overall the book is an excellent tool for the thinking person. My hat is off to the publisher for putting out an academic publication that isn't a waste of paper and space.

If Kate were Lady Brett Ashley, the devastating heroine of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, she'd spend her summers careering around the Riviera in her coup, breaking hearts by the dozen--because why not? In reality, Kate's never even had a boyfriend, and she'll be spending the summer abetting her mom's lame ploy to make her dad jealous: running off to Cape Cod and crashing at the seaside home of her wealthy friends, the Cooper-Melnicks. To add to the shame, the Cooper-Melnicks' gorgeous daughter is a bit like Lady Brett, and she seems less than thrilled to hang out with her new houseguest. Any dreams Kate once had of a perfect summer are ruined.

That is, until Sarah's cute, witty friend Adam starts drawing Kate into the fold--and seems intrigued. With Adam around, Kate feels like she just might have a bit of heart-breaker potential after all. But when a breezy summer romance quickly grows more complicated, can Kate keep pretending her relationship with Adam is just a carefree fling? Or will she take the risk and tell him her real feelings? Suddenly Kate is asking herself a question she thought she'd never stoop to: Is she girlfriend material? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Cute Read!
Have I ever mentioned before how much I love Melissa Kantor's book? Seriously, they are some of the most adorable reads ever. Sure they are not ground breaking or breathtaking, but they still are well written romance type books. Girlfriend Material was no different of course which made it a fast and fun beach read or in my case pool read.

From the start you are thrown into Kate's cape cod summer with Melissa's writing. Kate was a character that was extremely easy to like for some unknown reason. Same with the other characters. Sadly, they were laking a bit of substance, though what else is new?

The plot was predictable of course, but it still surprised me. I loved Kate and Adam's romance storyline a ton. Since, it always seemed like they were never going to be together, causing me to become engrossed in Girlfriend Material from the start.

While Girlfriend Material is not bringing anything new to the table, it is still a cute and summery romance that I definitely suggest to all. Plus, who can honestly not admit that the cover is stunning? Yeah, probably, none. :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Girlfriend Material
Kate has always wanted to be Lady Brett Ashley. She has always wanted the guys to be all over her. She has always wanted to be cool and sophisticated. She never wanted to be the shy girl who gets tongue-tied around any cute boys she may happen to meet in her hometown of Salt Lake City.

Then, things change. Kate is forced to spend her summer with her mom at an old friends beach house on Cape Cod. Things look horrible from the get go. Her parents marriage seems to be breaking up, the only person she knows on Cape Cod turns out to be a giant witch, and she gets stuck giving tennis lessons to the nastiest teenager on Cape Cod. Could things possibly get any worse?

Yup. She could fall for the wrong guy who makes her think that maybe she doesn't want the summer to end. She could fall for the wrong guy who makes her feel like Lady Brett Ashley. How could anything good possibly come of this?

Okay, first off, this is the first book I have ever read by Melissa Kantor so I wasn't sure what to expect. I loved it. I plan on reading more of her books as soon as I can get my hands on them. Girlfriend Material was cute, funny, romantic, and everything I could possibly want in a good summer read.

Kate was such a likable character, as was Adam. They were just so cute and easy to relate to. Kate was so much like me. She was just so confused by guys. She had no clue how to act around them or even how to talk to them. It was like reading about myself, a little. Adam was also one of my favorite characters. He was so sweet and seemed like he would make the perfect summer boyfriend. I just kept turning the pages, hoping everything would work out in the end.

While the story of Girlfriend Material isn't exactly a new one, it was still a very good one. It's the perfect summer read, whether you are at the beach, the pool, or even stuck at home. I definitely recommend it and I could even see myself rereading this one.

Katie had the perfect summer in progress:hanging out at her best friend's house, creative writing classes, and tons of time to perfect her tennis game so she could make varsity the next school year. That is until her mom decides to take Katie along with her for "time away" from her father so they can reevaluate their relationship.

Katie wants to be home living her life and is mad that her mom drags her along to her mother's best friend Tina's house. In Cape Cod!But Katie decides she might be able to make the situation tolerable - she had visited there once before and gotten along well with Sarah, Tina`s daughter.

When Katie and her mom arrive, Katie realizes that Sarah is just as unhappy with Katie's arrival as she is.Sarah avoids Katie and makes it quite clear that Katie is not invited to her activities.

To help pass her time, Katie accepts an offer to coach a girl in tennis. She struggles to teach the young girl as the girl's father hounds her with criticisms.

Katie keeps trying and trying to make this summer living arrangement work for her. Each time she thinks she has made it doable, Katie finds out she is sorely wrong.

What will Sarah think when Katie starts hanging out with her friends?

And whenAdam actually seems to like her..like LIKE her, there has to be a catch! She's not the girlfriend type. She's never had a boyfriend before. And those things just don't happen to Katie.

Or do they?

Will Katie's summer be a complete flop?Or will she manage to survive?Join Katie as she tries to survive outside of her comfort zone, and even learns that things are not always what you think they are at first.Sometimes they are WAY different.

Girlfriend Material is a quick, cute, summer read! It would be excellent to throw in your bag for a day at the beach.

While initially I was expecting quite a bit a fluff, perhaps a summer fling romance, there were some deeper elements at play in this novel. It's more about Kate discovering what type of girl she is, not so much "girlfriend." Deeper element number 1) finding your place when your parents are having problems. Number 2) sibling jealousy, overcoming the closeness you feel one sibling has with a parent and opening yourself up. Number 3) realizing besides being parents, they are also human. Number 4) don't be quick to judge.

And then on top of all that we have this budding relationship between Kate and Adam. It plays out nicely in the beginning stages of the relationship, has a rocky spot in the middle, but instead of progressing steadily as it did in the early stages, there is a race to the finish, that made it just a tad bit to unbelievable for me, even if it's only fiction.

The writing was fun, and enjoyable. The story flowed nicely, but as I said above, the ending was rushed. The characters were realistic, and relatable, each one adding their own element to the story line. Definitely reading material..

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beach read with a little substance as well
Katie (or Kate as she'd rather be called now that she's more grown up) is spending the summer on Cape Cod while her parents are....on a break? She has high hopes of re-bonding with her cousin Sarah, but finds that Sarah is now "all grown up" with cool friends that don't include Katie...er, Kate.Kantor does a great job of capturing the teen voice, and all of her characters are interesting individuals, instead of the all-good or all-bad stereotypes in some books. The books tackles some tough subjects (body image, separated parents, cheating boyfriends) without being preachy, and I found many places to laugh (or sigh with teenage angst) along with Kate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a great casebook!
I really enjoyed this casebook. In contrast to other books, this one not only has good main cases, but also smaller cases so you get a fuller picture of the law. After you read a case, there is a "discussion" section where the author discusses other similar cases in that area and the questions that can arise (what if? type of questions), which really get you thinking. Some people have said Epstein presents the law as he would like it to be, or that it's too focused on strict liability, but it's nothing I noticed. For my torts class this book is the only one we have to read, it's like a 2-in-1, instead of having to lug around two books, one for cases and one for law. The material presented in this book is clear and easy to understand and the reading is involving. Maybe I just like torts, I don't know, but I would have to say this is my favorite law book so far.

1-0 out of 5 stars Entirely too much Epstein and too little tort law
I definitely agree with the reviewer that Epstein too often presents the law as he wishes it were (and that the mainstream does not wish for), rather than the way it is. This man is such a strong believer in strict liability that he argues for this view over and over and over ... to the point at which I want to sue him for IIMD!

Other problems I have with the book:

1. Many of the squibs should be included as whole cases (to make room for them, cut out some of the commentary and a lot of the other squibs -- squibs are hard to understand, as they lack context).
2. Include further reading suggestions in footnotes. 1L's just don't have time to follow up on all the treatises and law review articles mentioned, and rather than remove such valuable information, move it to a footnote (or better yet an endnote) so that assignments are more easily read. I genuinely want to understand this material, and really care about it, but the assignments in this book are incredibly tedious because of all the extra material that I have had to train myself to skip just to get through it.
3. Cite yourself just a little less often. Reading this book you just know Epstein was the worst kind of gunner. Don't get me wrong -- I am a bit of a gunner myself. And I appreciate that the book is written by an authority in the field. But it's over the top and it disrupts the flow.
4. Finally, ease up on the quotes of old English cases to make fairly simple points. It slows down the reading and doesn't add to comprehension, so why bother? Here's an example:

The point being made: Courts are hostile to any requirement of mitigation by plaintiffs in nuisance suits.

The quote used to make this point: (Wood, 1893)
A person injured by a nuisance, is not precluded from a recovery by the fact that he might, by small exertion and a small expenditure, have prevented the injury, the rule being, that as it was the defendant's duty to abstain from the creation of the nuisance, and having created it adjoining owners are not bound to guard against the consequences ensuing therefrom, when in order to do so they are required to expend time or money .... A party is not bound to expend a dollar, or to do any act to secure for himself the exercise or enjoyment of a legal right of which he is deprived by reason of the wrongful acts of another.

(And a question to legal writers: Why do you feel compelled to say the same thing three slightly different ways? Are you paid by the word? But I digress.)

Anyway, I guess I can see why Epstein made some of the choices he made, but he seems to have forgotten his audience (1Ls) who are working with heavy reading loads learning a new language and new way of thinking -- and rather than shining light on this magical and amazing field of law, he darkens it with poorly written explanations, tedious recitals of related material, and entirely too much pontificating about the state of the law. I am not asking him to dumb down the book, but rather to brighten it.

Back to studying ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Casebook
Full Disclosure: I had Epstein as a professor (though not for torts) and like him personally. The critical review below is unfair.Epstein's book is certainly slanted towards a law and economics approach to torts, but it is hardly the ideological screed that the review makes it out to be.Epstein often presents cases taking approaches with which he would probably not agree and acknowledges when his own views differ from the majority opinion (which, as noted below, happens frequently).Especially when presenting arguments in the notes, Epstein almost always cites case law and law review articles contradicting him.It is true that the book probably does not spend enough time addressing reasoning that is not based in law and economics, but all case books have their flaws and this is the only signicant one I can find with this book.On the other side, the editing is very good, the chapters present the concepts in an intuitive order, and the notes to the cases were among the most interesting that I read in law school. Moreover, for students who are struggling to grasp the material, there is the Epstein treatise, which follows the book closely and explains the topics in a more straightforward manner (obviously at the cost of some the inherent complexity of the issues, but it makes a good supplement). Finally, as between a book that emphasizes law and economics in torts and one that emphasizes, say, corrective justice, it seems more valuable to have one that emphasizes law and econ because this is the less intuitive mode of analysis of the subject for most students. In a socratically taught class, it's likely that students will raise corrective justice issues on their own, when these can be compared with the material from the book, but it is less probable that students will fully calculate the economic ramifications of a precedential decision's effect on future actors' incentives unless they are encouraged to think this way when reading the cases. In sum, although the book would probably improve if it were not quite so heavily weighted towards law and economics, it is still a well edited, intuitively structured casebook with note material that should engage and interest students in the subject. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best introduction to magnetic materials but a good reference
Cullity has written a good reference text on general magnetic materials, but I do not think this should be used as an introductory text. The revisions make this a much improved text compared to the last edition, with numerous new figures, sections, and updates. However, I find that Cullity's approach, which is very technique-centered, is somewhat for the beginner to understand. That said, this is a good reference when choosing characterization techniques.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rigorous yet easy to read.
What a find! The text is addressed towards a broad audience and assumes only first-year (freshman) physics as a prerequisite.Beginning with a welcome review of basic definitions, it moves smoothly into all the core topics of magnetism. The explanations are clear and the derivations are carefully worked out.End-of-chapter problems are provided.Particularly interesting were the chapter on experimental methods and the most straightforward discussion on units I have yet seen (units in magnetism are notoriously confusing).

Although published in the 70's, the book still has value if you want to learn the fundamentals.I literally couldn't put the book down after I got started, and before I knew it, I had learned so much reading most of it over the weekend.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars textbook
Very satified, with quality, price and delivery. The book is very relevant to SAP and today's implementation at my job. Good buy for P2P business scenarios.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basics but leaves many questions open
Basic concepts are well explained but the book lacks the DESIRE to give you a deep understanding with industry best practices and real life applications. Very factual and dry descriptions, LOTS of repetions, but it doesn't seem to want to go beyond the surface. Many times I felt that the auther just tries to fill pages with little material and large fonts. Comparing this book to, say, "Implementing SAP ERP Sales & Distribution" by Glynn C. Williams (another one of my recent reads), the difference is night and day. I am somewhat dissappointed, this book is not the best value. All that being said, I have to admit, I learned a lot from it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for Consultants, & Configuration, but lacks some specific MM/Demand Planning info
First, the introduction to MM was very helpful and I learned much about the basic materials management set up in SAP. However, I had expected to learn more about the MM process rather than other Supply Chain processes.

Second,I felt the book was heavy on invoicing and procurement process rather than materials related process. I am not an SAP consultant, but a materials manager who will be implementing and supporting SAP MM in the near future.

Third, I would have liked to see more on forecasting with SAP and how to link hard and soft demand to that forecast to drive down to a component level in manufacturing. I also expected to learn more on lead time management, safety stock calculations and min/max planning in SAP. I also needed to understand how SAP manages expensed materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and useful SAP MM book
I've bought this excellent SAP MM book few months ago and i find it very useful and raccomended to SAP consultants and skilled users. I work in a financial company (our
MM is not so developed and deployed because of type of business) and i'm a sort of SAP super-user, dealing with end users and consultants, and in this book i strongly appreciated the efford to rationalize a lot of concepts about SAP, and in this sense first chapters were quite helpful for me to understand the "big frame" about Material Management (too often handbooks give you a lot of detailed informations, but the logic is not so well explained). For example, it makes big difference to explain "OX01" customizing transaction (p.49) alone or together with business scenarios (p.37-41)! The book is very good in my opinion mainly for this reason: it describes very well different business scenarios and workflows, then it explains SAP customizing and/or workflow. So, with the help of this book i could study MM
customizing, and i already gave users some hints about best practices or new ideas about possible developments.

Product Description
Blending rigorous presentation with ease of reading, this self-contained textbook covers the fundamentals of crystallography, symmetry and diffraction to several classes of materials. The first half of the book is a systematic treatment of the basics of crystallography, discussing bonding, crystal systems, symmetry, point groups and concepts of diffraction. The latter half is more advanced in scope, applying structural determination methods to the study of a broad range of materials, including metallic, ceramic, covalent, amorphous, molecular solids and nanomaterials. Throughout the text, mathematical theory and abstraction is complemented by a highly visual approach, allowing the reader to fully comprehend crystal structure. With over 430 illustrations, 400 homework problems and crystal structure files, this is suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses on crystallography within materials science and engineering. 4-0 out of 5 stars A light introduction to crystallography
The book is a light introduction to crystallography - meaning it does not assume much background (it even goes to the point of explaining the concept of the dot product!). The short size of the chapters (~10-15 pages each), and the large amount of space dedicated to explaining even the simplest concepts makes the book not only easy but readable.

Still, it is a thorough introduction to crystallography. The book has been clearly written for undergrads who've just been introduced to the concepts of linear algebra and calculus (hence it is careful not to rush the mathematics), but because it is thorough and clear it's gotta work well for graduates as well - especially for those coming from non-MSE fields (e.g. Physics).

I give it high stars for clear and comprehensive presentation of the material. But I'm used to books like Kittel's "Thermal Physics" and "Solid State Physics, or Griffiths "Introduction to Electrodynamics" - which were not only comprehensive and rigorous, but required you to work as hard as the author - Kittel and Griffith didn't give you *everything*, and required that you think hard to understand the material.

But de Graef gives everything to you - you won't find yourself tearing your hair out trying to understand the material. Sure you learn, and even the lazy will do well - but, the real value of an education is that it makes you good at figuring out hard concepts on your own. de Graef's book just *doesn't* do this. It'll give you a lot of new knowledge, but it won't exercise your analytical abilities that much unless your perhaps a sophomore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The price was great, the book was in great condition and it arrived just on time. i was very pleased. i would recommend to anyone

3-0 out of 5 stars Early revision; Needs work
We're using this text in a graduate-level course on material structures. The book is generally well organized but there are few worked examples, especially in the later chapters. There are also minor, but noticeable, gaps and omissions in the explanations.

Throughout the book the author is fond of statements to the effect of 'and by inspection of the diagram it is obvious that...', where in-fact it is not obvious how to make that conclusion from the diagram or table. For example, the chapter on stereographic projections is mostly high-level explanation and little time is devoted to operations that one can actually perform using them.

The chapters on direct and reciprocal space are long in derivation, short in conclusions. More worked examples in these chapters would remedy this problem. And end-of-chapter summary of the most important relationships derived in the chapter would also be useful.

Overall, this book is a great reference, but needs more worked examplesand explanations of key relationships to be an effective course textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text -- thorough, descriptive, and authoritative
I had the pleasure of using an earlier review copy of this text in one of Professor McHenry's crystallography classes. His profound crystallographic knowledge and understanding of students translate well to the text, which I can easily say is one of the best books I've read on crystal structure.

The book goes through the mathematical and historical background of crystallography, progressing from the simple to the complex. The first half of the book describes general crystal systems, symmetry operations, and how to describe crystal properties mathematically. In the second portion of the book he describes in detail many crystal systems, ranging from layered superconducting oxides to molecular solids. This approach worked particularly well for me, since I first learned the basics and then how to apply them to real-world systems.

I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to any student looking for a deep, thorough treatment of crystallography. Professors McHenry and DeGraef have managed to craft a thorough but completely readable text that is sure to become a standard for future materials science students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for designers and builders alike.
As a current LA student, I found this book immensely informative, and will no doubt return to it often for reference. As a former home builder, I recognize that this book offers a comprehensive, true cost assessment of both common and uncommon building materials.
In short, this book is a great resource for those who are interested in discovering, understanding and comparing sustainable building materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource for Sustainability
Materials for Sustainable Sites is an invaluable resource for architects who practice sustainable design. This work provides an in-depth and thorough analysis of the major building materials used in design and construction; while geared toward site design it is also applicable to architectural projects that utilize these materials. It details and makes easily accessible sustainable criteria for materials from extraction and production to delivery and implementation.Sustainability is not simple.Making intelligent and informed decisions requires navigating a complex web of interrelationships and choices.Calkins provides an unbiased, factual and encouraging tool to understand sustainability issues and to promote sustainable practices in design and construction and the materials industry.

Materials for Sustainable Sites is also a vehicle for clear communication between architects and their clients, consultants and contractors that can help in evaluating, understanding and encouraging innovative practices. This can be of great use especially when the architect does not have the benefit of consultants versed in sustainable practices.Or when the architect provides services on projects in which many materials components and sourcing are chosen and directed by the contractor.

Calkins is clearly devoted to and passionate about promoting sustainable practices and has given us a tool and a resource for changing our world and providing a future for our children. As Calkins states "Many small steps can add up to big impacts, and small steps over and over can result in a changed materials industry - an industry that closes material loops; eliminates toxins and toxic waste; and uses durable, local materials."Now it is up to us to implement these steps.

sorry for the fella who authored the book, he still has a long way to reach the level at which the interested customer finds the book of reference for the field of study;

5-0 out of 5 stars good
This is a very good book for coating engineers. The richness of the explanation of a variety of subjects is worthy of reading it carefully, from beginning to the end.

And in addition, I find the process of reading the book is quite a happy thing of enjoying the beauty of English, though I am not a native speaker.(I'd like to look forward to reading similar comments so as to confirming this impression of mine)

The book is precise and in depth. ... Read more
