Product Description

The poems in Robert Hass's new collection—his first to appear in a decade—are grounded in the beauty and energy of the physical world, and in the bafflement of the present moment in American culture. This work is breathtakingly immediate, stylistically varied, redemptive, and wise.

His familiar landscapes are here—San Francisco, the Northern California coast, the Sierra high country—in addition to some of his oft-explored themes: art; the natural world; the nature of desire; the violence of history; the power and limits of language; and, as in his other books, domestic life and the conversation between men and women. New themes emerge as well, perhaps: the essence of memory and of time.

The works here look at paintings, at Gerhard Richter as well as Vermeer, and pay tribute to his particular literary masters, friend Czesław Miłosz, the great Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer, Horace, Whitman, Stevens, Nietszche, and Lucretius. We are offered glimpses of a surprisingly green and vibrant twenty-first-century Berlin; of the demilitarized zone between the Koreas; of a Bangkok night, a Mexican desert, and an early summer morning in Paris, all brought into a vivid present and with a passionate meditation on what it is and has been to be alive. "It has always been Mr. Hass's aim," the New York Times Book Review wrote, "to get the whole man, head and heart and hands and everything else, into his poetry."

Every new volume by Robert Hass is a major event in poetry, and this beautiful collection is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites: I think this book will last
While there aren't a lot of surprises here, Hass deftly portrays the relationships between experience and idea, language and representation. With a classical eye and a post-modern toolbox, Hass both praises and addresses the inadequacies of language as a tool for representation--and rarely does language seem as powerful and relevant as it does in this collection.

In my opinion, this book displays a broader range than any of Hass's other original collections: he elucidates metaphor/language as well as he did in Praise, he uses broad linguistic styles to create surreal settings as in Sun Under Wood, and he plays with eros and politic as he did in Human Wishes. But, somehow, I find this collection more readable than his previous collections. Although occasionally paradoxical (using language as elegy for language), something about these poems is more generous than much of his prior stuff.

If you like his previous work, you should like this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why the fuss?
I remember being surprised, when this book first came out, to run into reviews of it everywhere - in all the familiar places and also where poetry is seldom reviewed. So obviously the name has a lot of cachet. But it's the poems that matter, and I'm sad to report that the poems are tired, very tired.

The characteristic Hass poem - longish over a few pages, with longish lines of four to five beats, in a cultured tone, on the theme of the sadness or futility of knowing - makes its regular appearance here. But in between there are also very short poems that are new for Hass, and signal (the poems continually hint at it, though they never outright say it) an artistic crisis resulting in the need to experiment in novel forms.

When Hass celebrates sensuality, the guilt in his being is palpable. When he updates his politics, trading the demise of Europe for the demise of modern America, I want to object: But sir, who pays you? I find academic critiques of industrialism/militarism/capitalism incredibly annoying - because as here, they perpetuate the dishonesty, and offer nothing but half-statements, vague despair and foreboding.

One of best poems here is one of the very shortest: In all the mountains / Stillness; / In the treetops / Not a breath of wind. / The birds are silent in the woods. / Just wait: soon enough / You will be quiet too. (The poem is called "After Goethe.")

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning
This is simply astonishing poetry;Hass is,without question, the finest poet writing today in the United States. His work is elegant, fearless and humane.Whole passages are touched by genius, especially when he writes-urgently - ofthe madness of war. No historian or statesman has ever placed the multiple holocausts of the twentieth century in more clear-eyed perspective than does Hass in his poetic forms. In April, this book received the Pulitzer Prize for 2008. When today's poetry is catalogued and discussed in fifty years, this poet will be regarded as a laureate.Set aside your copies ofpast masters. Here is poetry that sacrifices none of the richness or musicality of the English language, while speaking to the present day in all its' maddening ambiguity.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pleasure of Reading Robert Hass
If I only had to buy one book of poetry this year, it would be "Time And Materials" by Robert Hass.I say this because Hass is poet who can combine soulful meditation about his physical existence in a world surrounded by danger from humanity's destructive forces, to his own private personal inner thoughts of joy and sorrow from having lived his life between that hostile world and the world that creates art.

I like to think that if Baudelaire were born and raised in San Francisco in the 1950s, he'd write poems like Robert Hass, poems that have this double edge of horror and ecstasy, this fear and wonder at the movement of time, this repulsion and this attraction to nature, to beauty, to the body--those "evil flowers."

Because, as Hass writes in my favorite poem from this collection, "Art And Life," a poem that looks like prose but that reads like verse:

There is nothing less ambivalent than animal attention
And so you honor it, admire it even, that her attention,
Turned away from you, is so alive, and you are melancholy
Nevertheless. It is best, of course, to be the one engaged
And being thought of, to be the pouring of the milk.

And what amazes me is that Hass's meditation on life as art puts the reader into the mind of the poet wishing he were part of the painting, inside the act of artistic creation, inside a human wish to be part of something so simple, a fluid gesture of time caught at the threshold, a woman pouring milk in Vermeer's famous painting.

Hass continues his meditation in this poem to take in his surroundings, the world that rubs up against this painterly light-filled, time-frozen world of Vermeer, to place himself like Prufrock in a public space where people go about their waking lives while the poet dreams and imagines who the caretakers of this painting are, the plain people eating in the museum cafeteria who reveal their vulnerability:

...I wondered
Who the restorer was.The blondish young woman
In the boxy, expensive Japanese coat picking at a dish
Of cottage cheese--cottage cheese and a pastry? ...
...She seems to be a person
Who has counted up the cost and decided what to settle for.
It's in the way her soft, abstracted mouth
Receives the bits of bread and the placid sugars.
Or the older man, thinning brown hair, brown tweed coat,
Brown buckskin shoes like the place where dust and sunset
Meet and disappear...

The genius of Hass, like the genius of Vermeer, is in his ability to create metaphor that captures human fraility and emotion in his descriptions of small, animal gestures like a woman's hands breaking off pieces of bread, or a man's pair of sad shoes. It is in those small gestures that we all live.Hass has been sketching those fine details ever since his first book of poems, "Field Guide" was published almost forty years ago.He is a poet that I return to over and over again because I gain from reading him a better sense of my own art of living.

5-0 out of 5 stars haas does it again
Robert Haas, former poet laureate USA, has a problem: he doesn't write enough. But then that may be our problem. His readership hangs on every poem, every word in every poem. And they (WE, US)WANT MORE.

Not high flown nor lofty, his verse covers his chosen terrain, ordinary things from the ground-view vantage point. It takes us over the moguls and the pot holes with enough bounce that we know these rough spots are there but we're not jolted skyward out of our seats.

Obscurantism has had its day with the passing last century's lords of the obscure, Pound, Eliot, Stevens and their ilk.

Haas, Collins, are the 'ilks' we clamor for today.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction for the typical materials scientist
Dave Williams and Barry Carter have done a good job assembling this introduction to transmission electron microscopy based on their long and active careers in teaching and research. For the typical materials science upper class undergraduate or beginning graduate student, this textbook should serve as a good introduction.Teaching this complex and multifaceted technique is a herculean task--let alone writing a text book! That said, this is not the kind of book that I would have preferred as a novice in this field.I usually prefer books that concentrate on the more difficult and mathematically challenging concepts and leave other topics to anthologies such as this book or to review articles.Although this book gives a pretty reasonable introduction to the Howie-Whelan equations, it does not really go into Cowley-Moodie mulitislice theory. This is to be expected really, since understanding multislice theory requires the reader to have a stronger physics and mathematics background than that possessed by most materials scientists. However, for the student who is already quite familiar with the Schrodinger equation and has the equivalent of a B.S. in physics (as I did when I started materials science grad school) I would recommend Marc De Graef's book Introduction to Conventional Transmission Electron Microscopy (Cambridge Solid State Science Series) as a more satisfying introduction to TEM (and which addresses both the Howie-Whelan and multislice approaches--as well as the unifying concept of the Sturkey scattering matrix). After reading De Graef's book you can then read Williams and Carter for an introduction to many other important topics.

4-0 out of 5 stars waste too many pages
Catalogs and appendix of four books at the begining and ending of each book are extractly the same. Why do they put them in all four books to increase the whole pages and increase the price. The four books could be two books of same pages with no difference in contents.
Beside that, it's a very good text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars TEM Bible
I bought this book as soon as I found out I would likely get a job working with TEMs.I had already bought a very physics oriented book by Reimer that is also excellent, but this book is simply a joy to read.Ample color diagrams and real micrographs together with witty, keen narrative make it the first technical book in years that I have read till the wee hours of the morning.I think that if you can read the whole book and retain 90% of what you have read and have the opportunity to apply it in real life on an actual TEM then you will be able to call yourself a TEM expert of sorts.

I have found that reading the Reimer text together with this one makes a hard to beat combination. When the physics gets too tough in Reimer I take a break and read this text and get a better intuitive grasp of the material or an alternate derivation with a few less triple integrals, then delve back into Reimer with renewed vigor.

To the authors, I would like to buy you both a round of beers some day, this text is timely and I am glad to have found it when I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of electron microscopy
If you are ever going to touch an electron microscope - especially a transmission type electron microscope - make sure that you have this book readily available to you. You do not necessarily need the new edition. The contents are pretty much the same. However - while the first edition was easy to read, the second is even more so. The occasional colour images and a modernized language really do help. Also make sure to get the paperback edition, which is conveniently divided into four books.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for TEM
A very good book for understanding all the backgrounds in TEM,very detailed. But it might be a little difficult for the beginners. If you have a teacher to assist you read through the book, and you can consult him or her frequently, it is much better. ... Read more

Product Description
An artist's materials--the bold brushstrokes of a Van Gogh oil painting, the sparkling gold leaf in a Byzantine mosaic, the fragile translucence of a porcelain vase--are not just the accessories of his or her work. They are the physical embodiment of the artist's creative vision and a reflection of the historical context in which they were used.
This latest volume in the popular Guide to Imagery series discusses the materials and processes used in eight media: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mosaics, ceramics, glass, and metalwork. Within each of these categories, Antonella Fuga examines the range of materials and techniques that have developed over the centuries. For instance, in the chapter on drawing, she analyzes the use of charcoal, red chalk, and pastels, among other media. Capsule descriptions in the margins list essential information about the subject under discussion, and details of the artworks employed as examples are called out. The book concludes with a brief overview of contemporary techniques.
Richly illustrated with artworks from many of the world's important museums, this book provides art enthusiasts with new insights into the creation of many of the world's great masterpieces. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read That is Very Informative for Artists and Art Lovers
I first found this book in my university library.I was quickly sold that this was an excellent book because it rapidly went into descriptions that were not too lengthy but still informative of many different art techniques. It featured many beautiful illustrations of samples of the techniques discussed, along with historical information related to the adoption of the techniques and the artists who used them. These features, along with its great price and relatively small size make it a great addition to any artist or art lover's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Artist or Art Historian
This is a great book for either the artist or art historian who wants to know more about any art medium.I used it primarily to review mediums that I have not worked with , but that I reference in the college art history course I teach.I recommend it for the new art student who wants to know more about any medium including some they have probably never heard of before.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I purchased this sight-unseen because of the glowing reviews, but have been very disappointed in the book.My main complaints come from two areas:

1)The "shared inspiration" thread that holds it together is incredibly flimsy.I thought we would see a picture of something that they both used as a jumping off point (be it an older quilt, or a photo, or painting, etc).Instead, two quilts are thrown together by things like "we both used vintage fabric in this one" or "we both made lone star quilts" or "we both used old quilts as inspiration" (but we don't even get to see photos of the old quilts). It seems much more like they had 20 quilts and they wanted to put them in a book, so they organized them into groups based on a fake premise.I've been involved in books where this has happened (I made 10 projects based on 10 different inspiration pieces, and then when the book came out it had been totally reorganized and apparently I'd made those 10 projects in response to "challenges" that were invented AFTER the projects were completed as a way of imposing organization onto them).

2)The photos of the whole quilt--where we get to take the whole thing in at a glance (instead of the "in scene" pictures where we see closer details) have color issues. They have either been color corrected poorly or they were photographed under bad lighting and no one bothered to color correct them. You look at the pictures of the whole quilt and think "eew" but then the closeup images in natural light look much better.Color is SO important in quilting, so the fact that they didn't make the "whole quilt" shots just as warm and beautiful and vivid as the rest of the images is just dumb.

I also find a lot of the quilts to be downright ugly (this may be in large part because of the above issue).Gaudy, garish, and clashing, are perfect words to describe some of the quilts.(But some are totally beautiful, so I feel like they're very inconsistent in their color and fabric choices.)They are big Kaffe Fasset fans, and I think this is part of my problem--I am usually NOT a fan of his colors or patterns.(Again, I find gaudy, garish, and clashing to be perfect descriptions of most of his fabric.)I love modern quilting and bright color choices (I'm in my 20s--I'm by no means stuck in the older school of thought), but I think some of the fabric combinations (particularly in Heaven and Earth, Brighton Rock and Fruit Tingles)look like a color blind old lady picked them out.

To bring it all together, I think this was just a really mixed bag.The glowing reviews that this is even better than the first book just aren't warranted in my opinion.I hope the third book (mysteriously also titled Material Obsession 2) is better.

5-0 out of 5 stars lovely purchase
This is a lovely book, so enjoyable to view many times over, even if you never make a single quilt....you'll want to though :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Material Obsession Two: Shared Inspiration
This is a wonderful book.It makes me want to stop everything I'm doing and get started on every quilt in this book.Kathy and Sarah really have an eye for color and design.Their quilts make me feel happy just looking at the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring indeed!
This book was recommended by a friend at my local quilt guild and I'm absolutely tickled with it.What is particularly exciting to me are the traditional blocks using contemporary fabrics (Kaffe's are a personal favorite).

First I looked at all the pictures, then I read the book from cover to cover, even the sewing directions.

It's a beautiful book, but so much more than merely eye candy.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Book
Love this book and also have the first one Kathy and Sarah did. They have a way of putting fabrics together that look great. It gives "zing" to the quilts.Easy to read directions.I will be waiting to buy the third if they print one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Material Selection
5 Stars.

Material Selection in Mechanical Design, by Michael Ashby, is a fantastic book on materials and material selection.I would recommend this book to anybody studying or practicing engineering or material science. The insight provided is invaluable.

The text presents a rational, systematic process for selecting materials in new designs or newly modified designs. With this approach, gone are the days of almost randomly selecting a handfull of materials to study based on personal experience (which is woefully limited in all cases) or what materials might "feel" right. This selection process brings us access to a broader range of materials for consideration as well as a previously unseen level of objectivity in our final selection.

This book is well organized and well written, with theory, data tables/charts, and case studies all bundled into one.The presentation is student friendly and the structure/layout is reference friendly.

Also recommended are Michael Ashby's other material science books:

- Engineering Materials 1: An Introduction to Properties, Applications and Design (with DRH Jones)

- Engineering Materials 2: An Introduction to Microstructures, Processing and Design (with DRH Jones)

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Design Engineer

Very good diagrams to help you select the correct material for your design based on varying criteria.Guides you step by step through the process of design driven material selection.

I just wish it was available in a hard cover edition.

It is a very good one. I would recommend to buy if you could afford the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information -- several typos, however
The graphs and data provide a lot of good information but the book has several typos in key areas which lead to many hours of frustration. Also, I wish the book was offered in hardcover.I appreciate the desire to keep the costs low for the students, but a book like this will be life long resource for working engineers and I don't feel that the book will hold up well over the years with a soft cover. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Great Book but Unconscionable Price
I've used this book often in my classes at both UCLA and Santa Monica College.I think it's a terrific book. But the price is just unconscionable! How does the publisher justify such an outrageous price, I wonder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techniques and Materials of Music
This book is so wonderful.I love how it so simply explains music theory, so that I can understand it better and become better!!I love it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Overpriced pistol target
Know that old saying, "you get what you pay for"?It's not always so.
Copies of this book sell for $150 in places. That is ridiculous, seeing as it's less than an inch thick. It's supposed to cover centuries of music theory, yet each principle is explained vaguely and with few examples. If you want to get a really good step-by-step on Western music theory, take a look at Clough and Conley's "Basic Harmonic Progressions," which will give the reader a solid working knowledge of basic music theory ("basic" meaning the core of functional harmony).Unless you have a music class where this thin little book is required, stay far away from it.If I'm not able to sell this book back at the end of this year, I intend to take it to a target range and dispose of it properly. It will be the most expensive target I've ever bought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a clear theory book
This is a perfect textbook for college students in their first two years.Part of the beauty of the book is that instructors have a great deal of flexibility in how to organize their beginning music theory classes. One can add more composition projects or less depending on the class. In my opinion, which differs from the first reviewer, music theory is intrinsically not a subject for people to study independently. Music is too complicated with too many chances for misunderstanding. Most people know that they need an instructor to study piano. Why would theory be different? The examples provided in the book are clear, very clear, and can easily be expanded with more complex musical examples and assignments.

This textbook adds other musical textures apart from the often mistaught four partchorale textures with the parallel fifth and octave rules. No one in Bach's day (Bach is the model for this afterall) ever wrote chorales as vertical chord structures despite Walter Piston's strange misportrayal of this texture.Four part chorales are countrapuntal and that's how they're written.

We now have generations of music students teaching who continue this myth to the detriment of their students who pass the nonsense along when they start teaching.Benjamin, Horvit, and Nelson along with Leo Kraft and his excellent books have helpedcorrect this.

This textbook is understandable, putting it far ahead of most of the others.I read Ottman and Piston and they are certainly pedantic and confusing. Both wax on with such lofty nonsense in their efforts to explain some of the most simple things. Why not just be clear?

The students finally have a chance to understand the real stuff with Benjamin, Horvit, and Nelson.I urge you to get a desk copy and decide for yourself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad theory textbook
This book was used for my Harmony I and II class at Fullerton Community College which was the second and third course in music theory for music majors. I find this book to be very poorly written. IT does not go into to much detail in explaining concepts. The chapter in the book are very short although the reference back section is handy. It is written in a skeletal outline format and does a terrible job at defining new terms. The book is also worthless for self study. Students need the guidance of a professor or music pro to help them learn from the book unless the student is very bright. Most of the examples are written for keyboard which could be burdensome for non keyboard playing people even though I play the keyboard. Also the examples in the book are not good enough and not all of the examples are in four part choral style which is learnt in most college thoery classes. ... Read more

This book should be read after Harold Speed's The Practice and Science of Drawing, as these skills are referred to in this book.Wonderfully informative - I wish I'd known about Harold Speed's books years ago.

.....for someone who already has a firm foundation in drawing. It's main limitation is that it was written for an audience that possessed a visual sophistication that is much less common today than it was then. It seems wordy, but every sentence says something worth knowing. Speed painted well, understood what he was doing, and, lucky for us, was also a pretty good writer. So, how cool is that?

4-0 out of 5 stars Unusual ArtText
Art instruction of this nature are hard to come by. This book should be entirely redone - different format, larger illustrations in color, a little updating - not too much. Speed is so interesting and helpful. He organizes what you already know, introduces you approaches you never thought of, shares his artistic philosophy and generally fills in the gaps in one's education. Glad I bought it.

Harold Speed has in this book explained everything an oilpainter needs to know. Very informative, and a great learning tool. ... Read more

Product Description
Food and drug law deals with governmental attempts to protect public health and individual welfare in the development and marketing of essential commodities. The materials included in this Third Edition, the organization used, and the issues dealt with reflect this focus. The organization and bibliographic assistance should help frame the pertinent questions and identify many of the relevant sources. The FDA's continuing efforts to come to grips with its regulatory responsibilities comprise a mini-history of American administrative law. Since the 1960's, regulation of food, drugs, and related products has presented some of the most challenging illustrations of the tense interplay between law and science. Because of the growing complexity of its responsibilities and the potential clash between public objectives, the FDA has been forced to experiment with a wide variety of innovative administrative procedures for deciding controversial law-science issues. The story of federal efforts to regulate the marketing of foods and drugs is fascinating as history in itself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Law Book!
Those in Law:
As good as other casebooks. Lengthy (details) and never highlight "important" stuff . What is not important?
Skipping the fine prints is never a good idea. 1700 pages is pretty routine.
4-star because I can't say it's the best. It is the best FDCA case book I have so far (not planning to read another).

Those in pharma/chemical/biopharma....:
To use this 4.5 kg book to understand cGMP, NDA etc is probably impractical, if you need those info for "practical" reasons.
Why would you want to know FDA started from a small office? Or, what the "Congress" wanted or intended, like 20 years ago?
If your questions are "how do I get this done", "what should I/shouldn't I do"there are those 300-pages A5 sized book that encapsulate all topics. Those books would high light the landmark cases and explain concisely what thou must/must not.
The FDA website provides plenty of up to date info.

However, reading this Food and Drug Law would give you a whole picture of FDA and FDCA; and the frequency of you saying "what? That's ridiculous" would be reduced. Sometimes people tell that they've found a loop hole, not knowing that each word is clearly defined.

If you are taking a class for regulatory purpose and hence using this book, get a 300-page all-you-need-to-know book and note the cases that are mentioned - those are usually the landmark cases. Pay attention to the ramifications and the arguments.
Those in regulatory should get one. It will reduce the chances of a company getting a warning letter.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much info
Like Chris C, i found the book waaay too wrapped up in the history. And hard to read. The writing on the page just doesn't convey knowledge well. You will read through a LOT of info, and then read over the 2 most critical/important points without realizing their significance at all, because they are not highlighted by the authors. You will get 50-page assignments for class (yes, the text is smaller and the pages are bigger than a normal textbook), which was freakin 50 pages because the book is sooo tedious and throws out the critical bits of information here and there scattered.

This is not just a textbook. It is a tome of Hutt's knowledge.Knowledge you'll wish your glazed eyes never had to be dragged over.

2-0 out of 5 stars Manipulative.
Dear Food and Drug Law textbook,

We've had so many good times, but our history is no excuse for these mind games: you constantly tease me with some hot FDA action that never seems to go anywhere. It's always the same: first you show a little leg and whisper something dirty about a cGMP proposal from 1976. You throw yourself at me with some sexytalk about each FDA proposal on the subject for the next 20 years. By the time I'm really getting into it, you quickly tell me that the FDA completely gave up on all these proposals in 2007 and rush out my door.

Why do you play these games with my heart, Food and Drug Law textbook?I spend nearly every night with you, in hopes that you'll explain yourself. But you keep torturing me, for nearly 1000 of your 1700 pages. All I want to know is why all these 20-page descriptions of ancient FDA actions are important IF THEY NEVER BECAME FDA POLICY. But you will not share your innermost secrets, and I'm left to weep on my pillow each night.

Oh, you probably think it's real fun to lead guys on, knowing that they'll keep coming back to take endless notes that mean nothing in the end. Well I cannot live like this: I must know why all these 20-page accounts of pointless FDA actions matter. Let me in -- I want to be a part of your life. If not, I will give up on trying to decipher the meaning behind the endless, cryptic accounts of your agency. They always seem to go no where, much like us.

Frustrated,
C ... Read more

Product Description

Materials for Civil and Construction Engineers, 3/e is ideal for courses in Civil Engineering Materials, Construction Materials, and Construction Methods and Materials offered in Civil, Environmental, or Construction engineering departments.

This introduction gives students a basic understanding of the material selection process and the behavior of materials — a fundamental requirement for all civil and construction engineers performing design, construction, and maintenance. The authors cover the various materials used by civil and construction engineers in one useful reference, limiting the vast amount of information available to the introductory level, concentrating on current practices, and extracting information that is relevant to the general education of civil and construction engineers. A large number of experiments, figures, sample problems, test methods, and homework problems gives students opportunity for practice and review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Civil Engineering Materials
Though it has a lot of valuable information, this book was a little less descriptive and harder to follow along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for solid knowledge without much flare
I used this book in class. It isn't the most modern-looking or modern-feeling book by any means. However, the information is provided in a straight forward and simple way. There isn't too much unnecessary elaboration like many other textbook authors try to do to prove their credentials to the reader. At a personal level, I personally found the book really interesting. The information presented here was different than the average engineering book. This was a more of a guideline for design and explanation for why things the way they are - not a list of equations that you blindly follow. The examples are worked out clearly and everything seems to make sense right away. The book is relatively basic (at least my understanding of what basic is) but not boring. Good for people that want to understand whats going on. Its also not too math involved. As I said before, the different sections tend to outline the basics of a topic (concrete for example) and then the author goes step by step explaining how to design a mix for a specific purpose and how every property you choose will affect the outcome. Chances are you don't have a choice in whether to buy the book or not since its for a class, but if not, for what its worth, I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginers
I liked the subjects covered for beginers but more in depth and solutions are needed for future civil engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read.
This book was easy to read and follow along with. The information is mostly well laid out and the example problems are ok, could use more.Biggest downside was that the answers were not in the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars good
I'd like to see the picture of the book I want to buy next time. It can show the real condition of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
The book is in good quality, but I received the wrong edition. Then I refund my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars If your prof requires this book, then you should invest in a supplement
This is my second semester of using this book, and it is awful. The authors will introduce concepts as if you already know them without explaining them. Also this book is heavy into referring other books to read to learn more about the concepts, which is not helpful in the least because they fail to even explain anything. If you are assigned this book, invest in a supplement because otherwise you will be lost! The Examples & Explanations is very good, but what supplement you need can vary from professor to professor because each can approach the ideas in different ways.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book Reseller
Book was clearly marked "not for resale". Good deal but not exactly what I thought I was buying

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Casebook
zanandjayna's review sums up much about how I feel about this casebook.

Other complaints that I had is that the notes/comments sections are quite poor and are usually of little relevance tothe case and/or concept you just studied. Also many of the cases have been poorly edited, leaving out key concepts that most prof's expect you to know.

All in all, this is a poor casebook. If you use it i recommend a good supplement.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid modern contracts overview
This is a helpful hornbook, although I favor the more intricate (and therefore more accurate) single-volume treatise by Williston. Williston is harder to read but will help you deal with the terminology you'll find in most of the cases you will be studying in law school and reading law.Williston is the IBMPC to Farnsworth's Apple Mac; Moore's Manual versus Wright's Federal Practice; Shakespeare versus Grisham. His logic and terminology is timeless and precise.Farnsworth is easy to read, covers the bases, deals with more modern problems, and is very popular.Let me put it this way.If you want to read Hadley v. Baxendale to find out what it says, read Williston. If you want to find out what the bar review courses say about it, read Farnsworth. This really isn't meant as a knock on Farnsworth.Precision can be a pain. But Williston, like Louis Loss, was one of the greatest writers in the history of American jurisprudence, is still quoted by the Supremes, and he probably always will be. Farnsworth gives it to you in a slicker, smoother, slightly less analytical manner.Williston gives you the exact topography.Farnsworth shows you in pictures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing effort by the authors
I am a 1L and this book is so littered with errors it has become a running joke in our class. For an extreme example, take a look at Black Industries v. Bush - the authors can't even copy the cases right.Nor am I being overly picky. The mistakes in this book are so serious that it calls into question the professionalism of the authors.

Not convinced? Check p. 85 and the dissenting judges. Or p. 74, lines 9 and 12. Or p. 233 line 17 from the bottom. All of these are serious errors that affect a beginning law student's understanding.

Some questions for the authors:
* If this is the 7th edition, how bad are 1-6?
* If the writing is this poor, how reliable is your reasoning in the notes?
* Are you this sloppy with your law review articles?
* What value does this book provide when we have access to WestLaw and study aids?

This book costs $136 and is pushed on thousands of students each year. Don't forget the supplemental materials. Shame on you William F. Young, Carol Sanger, Neil B. Cohen, and Richard Brooks!

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy the updated 7th editon
I have the 6th edition. When the semester started I found I was not on track with the class which was using the 7th, SO, I spent big bucks for the 7th ed.
Turns out it was thrown out money.Check the table of contents, there are very few new cases. In the beginning of the book some cases are just in a different order.

In the first 200 pages, I had found 6 typos in the 6th ed.FIVE are not corrected in the 7th.

$75-150 for the 7th ed.
$3 up for a used 6th ed.......
It's a no brainer, save your money.Spend $5 photcopying the missing cases in the library, or find them free on line.

Sometimes, a new edition has important changes. This edition seems to be an attempt to kill the market in used textbooks for this course.

1-0 out of 5 stars Contracts - Cases and Materials
The seller claimed to have sent this book overnight on Friday for a price of $77.69 for shipment, but I didn't get the book till the following Thursday. Either they have a defective mail system, or the seller did not mail it out on time as a responsible seller should.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to understand
I have no idea what this book is trying to say...it's so cluttered that I can't seem to follow it. It's boring, to say the least, and I don't really give care because you could just go to Wikipedia and get a much clearer interpretation of the case/contract.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatness really is as greatness does.
I started what I call 'my Debra Benton journey' in 1993 with her insightful NYT bestseller "Lions Don't Need To Roar". Its refreshing to see that now, 17 years later, Ms. Benton's clarity of insight has only gotten sharper. If you are already in Management, "CEO Material: How to be a Leader in Any Organization"will be like a fresh boost of oxygen to an accomplished marathoner: you will do well to recommend it to your subordinates. If you are beginning your journey towards leadership, "CEO Material" will start you off on your strongest foot. Pleasant reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not groundbreaking
This is a good book for general knowledge on how to be promoted and getting to the top.

The author has somewhat of a quirky but effective writing style. Almost all the suggestions are based on anecdotal evidence and personal experiences. You will not find any scientific studies in this book. Yet, I have found many of the author's suggestions to be very insightful and occasionally eye-opening. The book is also an interesting read and does a good job of keeping the reader constantly stimulated.

Some of the more useful suggestions in this book are:

1)Be a generalist and not just a specialist. Be good and have experiences in multiple disciplines. If you want to rise to the top, you do not want to be pigeon-holed as a specialist in only one area and not good at much else.

2)There are no shortage of able bodies for top level CEO positions. Good undergrad, blue chip company background, and a top-tier MBA are just for starters. One almost must have steady career progression (promotion every 2.5 years or so) and a solid track record of leadership and improving the organizational bottom line.

3)One must be willing to take risks and occasionally fail.No risk taking means no big rewards or even gaining valuable experiences.

4)One must strive for constant personal and professional improvement through gathering 360 feedback. Continuous improvement requires constant feedback, analysis, and learning.

5)Your appearance matters and you always want to look and act like a CEO.

I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars CEO Material
Once again the leadership Guru of the 21st century has provided leaders with another set of tools. The 4 C's are outstanding and a must read for leaders at any level and within any sector of the business community.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Formula for Success!
Debra Benton has taken the complex issue of how to become an organizational leader and boiled it down to sixteen key behaviors that separate the leaders in an organization from the masses. For each behavior she ensures the reader has a good understanding of what their actions should include by outlining a "What Does It Look Like?" section. The entire book is also peppered with quotes from the senior most organizational leaders that allow the reader to gain learnings from the top. This book is easy to read, understand, and apply - highly recommended for anyone looking for advice on continuing to build their leadership skills!

4-0 out of 5 stars If Only Corporate America's CEOs Would Notice
Was I tempted to give this book a five star rating? Most certainly.D.A. Benton's latest book is definitely a winner, and worth at least 4.75 stars, but I thought I'd round down for this particular review; primarily to get noticed by some of the CEOs of Corporate America, or those on the brink of becoming a CEO somewhere.

Let's face it.The current hierarchial structure in most large corporations today isn't cutting the mustard. They have little or no clue about the nuances of employee engagement, and don't know how to actually "lead" their employees. They delegate all that sort of stuff to a staff of drones who in turn feel the best way for them to stay in favor with the head-honcho is by micro-managing the management staff in the field.

This type of situation is the best way for an organization to fail, and we've seen a lot of that going on in recent months (eg, General Motors & Chrysler). The good news is we've got another book on the market which can help straighten-out this current mess; but it's got to be read by the vast majority of power brokers scattered throughout the world (especially in America where most of the trouble seems to be coming from).

Consequently, at least for the time being, my review will be posted as being somewhat critical of this book, even though it's really not critical at all; except my criticism of big business in general.

To take it one step further, I'll be adding this book to my "Listmania", uh list; this particular one is my favorite Business & Motivational" books. The only problem is, I'll have to kick one off the list, since it's already at full capacity (40).No problem, since this book ranks in my personal top five now (go check out my "Listmania" now).Bye.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good discussion of solution theory and phase diagrams
Although I would not recommend this book as one's first book on thermodynamics, it does provide a good introduction to solution theory and phase diagrams.Personally, I have always found thermodynamics to be a difficult topic. In addition I find classical thermodynamics particularly difficult to grasp. As a second semester Freshman our physics course spent half a semester or so on classical thermodynamics, which left me completely bewildered.I just could not relate the classical definition of entropy (heat divided by temperature) to the notion of randomness to which it corresponds.I was much happier when I took a graduate level course in statistical thermodynamics in which entropy was given the very understandable definition as proportional to the logarithm of the number of states. The graduate level course used Reif's excellent textbook Fundamentals of statistical and thermal physics (McGraw-Hill series in fundamentals of physics) --which I highly recommend.I should also note that Reif wrote a statistical thermodynamics textbook appropriate for undergraduates (the fifth volume of the Berkeley Physics series) Customized complete statistical physics: Berkeley physics course, volume 5 , which people sometimes refer to as "Baby Reif".Nevertheless, neither of Reif's books prepares you for what metallurgists need to know about solution theory and phase diagrams.Indeed, my graduate level course in metallurgical thermodynamics, which was taught out of Reif, did not prepare me for my qualifying exam on this topic. In order to pass the exam I relied on Gaskell's treatment of solution theory and phase diagrams, which gave me what I needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intro to Thermodynamics
This book is one edition older than required in my class, but i have found that it is very similar to the new one (the fifth edition) and a lot cheaper. I think its a great book to get, and i recommend it to everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This book is just plain awful. How can a book that's been through 5 editions and 30+ years be this bad? Typographical errors are rampant, in the text, the equations, and even a few figures. The notation is inconsistent both across and within chapters. This could all be dismissed as a superficial complaint, but seriously...five editions? There's no excuse. Despite the fact that you have to read slowly and carefully to make sense of anything, I found this book practically useless as a tool for learning thermodynamics. Gaskell goes on and on and on and on and on about mundane details (the book could easily be 200 pages lighter), while glossing over the important points. Some explanations are muddy at best, even after reading the section two or three times. The very few worked example problems within the chapters are easy enough to follow, but are useless in providing guidance for solving the exercises at the end of each chapter. Some of said exercises are horribly worded and, frankly, ambiguous as to what exactly to do for the problem. Skip this book if you can help it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Several major deficiencies
There are several significant problems with this book, in addition to the errors that others cite:
1. Overly long explanations that lead nowhere - Several times I've found that even after reading the chapter, I've had to look elsewhere for important equations, perhaps the author expects that any useful equations we can just derive ourselves based on what he gives.
2. No solutions for the problems - It gives the final answer (usually), but no explanation of how to get there.
3. Poor examples - The examples often seems completely unrelated to the content discussed elsewhere in the chapter and then often unrelated to the problems. Additionally, the examples aren't integrated into the material, they're just put at the end, so you have to read the whole chapter before you can find out what parts are useful and what parts are just background information.

I rated it a 3 as I don't actually have any other thermo textbooks to compare it to, but this book doesn't set the bar very high.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good seller
I got a same book from my coworker. Then the seller returned money the moment he received the returned book. Very nice to talk to him and would like to do business again in the future. ... Read more

Product Description
Warehousing continues to play a critical role in assuringhigh levels of customer service and overall logistics performance. Efficient warehousing can minimize the effects of supply chain inefficiencies; can improve logistics accuracy and inventory management; and can allow for product accumulation, consolidation, and customization. The cost of warehousing should be commensurate with the contribution of warehousing to overall logistics performance--typically between 2% and 5% of corporate revenue. In world-class warehousing these costs are minimized while also improving customer service. The principles and systems described in this book are common denominators of world-class warehousing. The principles have been developed over a decade of logistics research, education and consulting project experience. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling can be used to develop a warehouse master plan to support the corporation's overall logistics strategy. In the second book in the Logistics Management Library, World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling will address: customization and countrification; information technology in warehousing; warehouse performance analysis; the role of the warehouse in the supply chain; warehouse expansion and contraction planning. World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling will integrate both global and e-commerce issues and examples throughout the text. The author's consulting and teaching experience places him in the position to draw on his wide experience to present numerous case studies and best practices throughout the book. In the end, this book will help the reader to develop a comprehensive warehouse strategy to reduce costs and increase quality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars World Class Warehousing & Material Handling "101"
This a generally very useful, if basic, text on the subject of distribution center operations and structure/layout/set up, along with the various ways and means of Material Handling.Useful (because of the use of photos and diagrams) in explaining the general concepts of operations in current-model DC's. Worth having available to bring along new personnel that want to learn more about the goals, objectives, and waya and means of storing and handling product.

5-0 out of 5 stars World Class Warehousing
This is a great book in an easy to read format for managing a "world-class" warehouse.Dr. Frazelle from Georgia Tech has done a great job explaining and providing examples on "how to" complete the analysis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful book
A very useful book. All the concepts related to modern Warehousing & material handling have been explained in a very concise manner.A very useful reference for anyone wanting to learn about modern warehousing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of concepts
I found the book helpful in learning some basics of warehousing.I appreciated the overview of various types of equipment and racking. The book focuses more on distribution systems but I found many of the concepts can be applied to MRO warehousing(zoning and slotting in particular)with some tweaking.

2-0 out of 5 stars World-Class Warehousing and Material Handling
Interesting overall view for beginners in warehousing. It has a superficial treatment on very critical issues such as receiving and putaway. Also it's so focused on order picking (the author's experience) that provides an unbalanced view of Distribution Centers. It doesn't address any type of raw material warehousing insights, it focused more on finished goods distribution centers. Limited applicability of the content. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I wouldn't if I was in a rush.
I am a college student and ordered all of my texts books at about the same time. All of them came in a timely manner, accept this book. It has been over 4 weeks and I still have no clue where my book is, even though it is well past the delivery date I was given. Although the book was cheap it was not worth this hassle.
