3-0 out of 5 stars Long on principles, short on practical
I am a contractor in New England and hoped that this book would be useful for designing and installing HVAC systems in luxury single family homes.Although the author is quite good at explaining heat transfer, fluid motion and other engineering principles pertinent to HVAC, there is almost no practical applications help whatsoever.
Good book for a beginner HVAC Engineer, not a good book for a contractor, homeowner, or technitian. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Direct Digital Control for Building HVAC Systems
This book is 15 years out of date.I was hoping for a reference book but I found this book so light on information that it is virtually useless. It could have been written as a pamphlet, ten pages in length, worth maybe $5.00.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey text on the state of the technology.

Product Description
No more useful reference for the designer or specifier of HVAC control systems exists than this complete "cookbook" of generic segments and sequences. This indispensable professional compendium gives you a broad array of diagrams that provides everything you need to design controls for an in-place or in-plan HVAC system; offers ready-to-go details for retrofitting, updating, or designing controls for altered systems; allows clear comparisons among commercial control systems; shows you frequently-made and useful modifications to controls; demonstrates how to create controls for peak efficiency, air quality, and energy conservation; covers air handling, terminal, and primary systems; offers sequences and segments for virtually any HVAC system need; and shows you how standard control algorithms work in particular systems. These highly useful control diagrams, many of them comparable to commercially available models, let you design or specify needed configurations in the most efficient manner possible. Written by a vastly experienced HVAC control engineer, in full compliance with ASHRAE standards, and covering both hardware and software applications, this unique volume fills a definite need. It fully deserves a place of honor within easy reach of every HVAC engineer's design desk. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Obsolete Control Technology
Nowadays, most HVAC systems are controlled with digital controllers with advanced control programs.VFD is often used for fans to improve the control quality and efficiency. This book does not cover these new technologies and need a major update.

3-0 out of 5 stars Title should be "Air Handling Diagrams."
The book is very informative having the most diagrams of air handlers and VAV boxes I have seen in one source. Diagrams are fairly thorough with the inclusion of heating and cooling coils and "some" additional control features. I was hoping for more detail on the piping of heating and cooling coils with various control valve confirgurations. It is still an excellent book if you want to compare air handling configurations.

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentHVAC Book
This is the type of BOOK that i can recommend to anybody that is really serious in learning about HVAC system. Excellent for beginners & Professionals !!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Copyright is not 2001!
I don't know if there is a second edition or second printing of this title, but the book I just received has a copyright of 1990 and not 2001 as listed in the book information on the amazon page.I only just received the book and can't really comment on the content but I would not have paid 50 dollars for a used book that references systems (and costs) from 17 years ago.My initial impression of the book is good except that I am concerned it is dated.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as expected.
I found this book informative rather than practical as implemented by publisher to be a working tool primarily for desingers. People with basic knowlege of HVAC might enjoy reading this book to get some general but not in-depth engineering knowlege of HVAC systems, but there is not much for designers who need analytical information and knowledge of calculation procedures.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disapointment
This book is aimed at the engineering design professional but I found it to be a major disapointment. There are a number of good texts available on this subject but this one, like so many of Roger Haines' other books, is a superficial overview with little if any practical information.
