Editorial Review

Product Description
The objectives of Human Reliability are to build reliability into the job, into the machine, and into the environment, and to let man perform naturally. In this book the author shows how these objectives can be achieved by concentrating on human reliability issues during the design stage. This is done by illustrating the relationships between various design features and some aspect of human performance, e.g. human errors. The book is designed as a practical guide to the daily performance of tasks in Human Reliability as well as a general reference and tutorial introduction to the field. It is therefore both practical and theoretical: the first four chapters focus on principles and ramifications relevant to human error prevention; the latter four are primarily concerned with human reliability analysis and prediction methodology. Throughout the book there are extensive references, numerous ready-to-use recommendations, formulas and mathematical models, and computer programs for human reliability work for analyzing, predicting and preventing human errors in a variety of situations. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume, one of a two volume set, is from the August 1999 HCI International conference papers presented in Munich, Germany. Human Computer Interaction: Communication, Cooperation, and Application Design focuses on the informative and communicative aspects of computer use. A larger number of contributions is concerned with computer-supported cooperation using a wide variety of different techniques. In keeping with the increased focus of HCI International '99 on internet issues and aspects of the global information society, many papers in this volume are centered around information and communication networks and their implications for work, learning, and every-day activities. Due to the growing number and diversity of groups utilizing modern information technologies, issues of accessibility and design for all are becoming more and more pertinent. A range of papers in this volume address these issues and provide the latest research and development results.

Product Description
Alarm management is the application of human factors (or ergonomics as the field is referred to outside the U.S.) along with instrumentation engineering and systems thinking to manage the design of an alarm system to increase its usability. Most often the major usability problem is that there are too many alarms annunciated in a plant upset, commonly referred to as alarm flood, since it is so similar to a flood caused by excessive rainfall input with a basically fixed drainage output capacity. However, there can also be other problems with an alarm system such as poorly designed alarms, improperly set alarm points, ineffective annunciation, unclear alarm messages, etc. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This is a book about systems, including: systems in which humans control machines; systems in which humans interact with humans and the machine component is relatively unimportant; systems which are heavily computerized and those that are not; and governmental, industrial, military and social systems.

The book deals with both traditional systems like farming, fishing and the military, and with systems just now tentatively emerging, like the expert and the interactive computer system. The emphasis is on the system concept and its implications for analysis, design and evaluation of these many different types of systems.

The book attempts to make three major points: 1. System design, and particularly computer system design, must fit into and be directed by a comprehensive theory of system functioning. 2. Interactive computer design models itself upon our knowledge of how humans function. 3. Highly sophisticated interactive computer systems are presently mostly research vehicles, they are vastly different to general purpose, commercially available word processors and personal computers.

The book represents an interdisciplinary approach, the author has used psychological, organizational, human factors, and engineering sources. The book is not a "how to do it" book but it is intended to stimulate thinking about the larger context in which systems, particularly computer systems of the future, should be designed and used. ...
