5-0 out of 5 stars Application beyond just electronics
The author is obviously an engineer who understands the everyday practical problems a dynamicist faces. Some theory, but chock full of easy to understand, and more importantly, *useful* information necessary to putproperly designed product out the door.

Don't let the title fool you. The focus of this book is electronics, but the material here is applicableto any vibration problem.

If you're doing any dynamics work, you NEEDthis book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tool for success
If a mechanical engineer has chosen a career in the world of electronics, I strongly recommend this easy to follow gold mine of a book. I say it is a gold mine because it applies directly to the engineers' job. There are nofluff chapters or topics. Everything applies. Steinberg has made it easy(and almost fun) to solve those every day shock, vibration and acousticchallenges. Finding the natural frequency of a body such as a PC board isso much simpler for me now. And asurprising tidbit was for me to discoversome amazing facts concerning acoustics. This is especially important asapplied to fan cooled electronic packages. Another important area of studywas packaging for transportation. How many times have we simply said"Just pack it in foam"? Before reading this book,I couldn't besure what foam density to use or what the optimum thickness was. Why guess?Do it right.

I borrowed this book from my employer, took it home and readit over the long Christmas weekend. I was so impressed, that I ampurchasing my personal copy tonight. I won't be without it.

Product Description
Today's hottest electronic traders tell others how to get in the game. More than 3 million investors trade electronically today...14 million accounts are predicted by 2002...Business Week, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times sing the praises of electronic trading. From the authors of the investing bestseller of 1998 comes Electronic Day Traders' Secrets.

Featuring exclusive tales of the e-traders who are setting the curve--and making up to 80,000 a day! They talk about how they started; they tell heart-stopping stories of making a year's salary with the flick of a finger; and they share tips and strategies for making incredible fortunes in this exciting, quick-turn-around market. Friedfertig and West--pioneers and innovators in this high-stakes phenomenon--support the interviews with insider insights, background, and hands-on instructions for becoming an e-trading success.Amazon.com Review
The literati of the day-trader universe, George West and MarkFriedfertig helped to popularize day trading with their bestseller, The Electronic DayTrader. Their second book, Electronic Day Trader'sSecrets, written with Jonathan Burton, is a collection ofinterviews with 13 successful day traders. Whereas their previous booklooked at the mechanics of day trading, this book considers the peoplewho trade. And what's most striking about the traders interviewed isnot their various trading philosophies, but what they have in common:male gender (young men--half under 30); similar backgrounds (most wereeither brokers or floor traders before they became day traders); thestocks they trade (NASDAQ high flyers: Intel, Cisco, Amazon.com,Yahoo, Dell); the money they lost when they started (lots--EricFromen is typical: he lost $53,000 in his first six months oftrading); and their current success (why else would they beinterviewed?).

With chestnuts such as "Flexibility is a key to successful daytrading" and "Controlling your losses is key to not digging yourselfinto a hole," the book may ring hollow to those seasoned in the art ofspeculation (consider Edwin Lefevre's classic Reminiscences of a StockOperator, instead). But if you're looking for a major coursecorrection to your current day-trading tack, you should find usefulguidance here.

However, those uninitiated to day trading should watch forsandbars. This book dangles the possibility of lucrative careers forsuccessful day traders, which for many is simply an oxymoron: matchingwits with Wall Street's best (not to mention these guys) can be thequickest way to the poorhouse. But if you fit the profile above, havemoney to burn, want a fast and exciting career, or are just simplycurious, Electronic Day Trader's Secrets is a tantalizingglimpse into what interviewee Jim Shaw describes as "the church ofwhat's happening now." --Harry C. 4-0 out of 5 stars time to quit the day job?
This book was as exciting as it was informative. For what it was intended to accomplish it has hit the mark. Some readers who are searching for TA or charting won't find it here. But those wanting to know the mental and emotional aspects involved in day trading (many traders consider this the biggest challenge)will be pleased. More importantly, you will know by the end of this book whether day trading is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars The book is fun to read, but could use a few well defined strategies
This book has a good number of exciting stories from several people that went from "wannabe" traders losing money to wealthy and confident money makers. The problem is that the book needs more in depth strategies that can serve you as a step by step guide on how to make it as a day trader.

Stock trading is a very competitive field and in order to succeed you need to FOCUS on a set of simple strategies that you can implement without hesitation.

The trading method you employ to approach the stock market will make a big difference in your results.

To many people want to discover what's the big secret to making money as a day trader. The real " secret " of the stock market game is enclosed within the trading set ups and market signals you rely on to decide when to buy or when to sell shares.

So the clearer your signals are, the faster you can spot a potentially profitable trading scenario and act on it reducing your risk.

Complicated technical systems and information overload can make you slow and confuse you right from the start, making you loose money instead of making your profits grow.

Fortunatly some sites on the web do offer more effective and updated day trading information. One of those sites that can show you how to trade using simple to understand and apply trading strategies is Hot In Play Stocks ( HotInPlayStocks com )

They focus mainly on momentum stock trading strategies, that in my opinion are easier to implement than many other technical systems outhere.

Stock trading doesn't have to be complicated as many people perceive. But you do need to follow a well organized set of rules and tactics, that once you master them, you can aspire to replicate profitable trades with consistency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Technical techniques may be dated, but not the psychology
This book is almost as interesting as the Market Wizard books. You may not be able to apply some of the technical techniques that the interviewees used anymore, but the psychological insights they give will always be applicable. If you're hooked on trader biographies and their approach to the market, as well as short-term trading, I think you'll enjoy this book. Like the Wizards books it hammers in the importance of discipline. Most of the subjects trade a little differently, but they all learned risk parameters early on. Granted, we don't know how they did outside of a bull market, but the point was that they did far better than the norm during the market of their time. And how you do in the present in relationship to the general market is what measures your performance whether you're a day trader or a mutual fund manager.

I'm more of a swing/intermediate-term trader, but I found some of the technical and psychological insights helpful in picking intraday entry/exit points.

I paid $.90 for this book used - that's right, 90 cents - and I'd have to say it's the best book bargain I've ever purchased. I had a hard time putting it down.

2-0 out of 5 stars New traders beware and old traders warning danger!
The author book is a composite of interviews with a variety of day traders. The book follows a question and answer style of writing.Actual technics and methodologies come secondary and are replaced with interview narratives about to pattern recognition, psychology of trading, and experience. Each chapter highlights a different trader who shares their story of success or failure. Most having survived early trading mistakes and bloated egos managing to change lossing strategies into winning reactions. Most of thetraders emphasis flexibility, game plans, pattern recognition, understanding the trading crowd, price and volume, risk managment, and staying ahead of the pack. The book is easy reading and selects from a select group of day trader for opinions. Most of the assumptions are contrary to the book "The Master Swing Trader: Tools and Techniques to Profit from Outstanding Short-Term Trading Opportunities". This tells me the author is interviewing the celebrities of day trading. Warning danger! If a new trader followed their trading advice it is likely they would be crushed within hours. With high speed internet connections and powerful software and computer more traders will fail quickly than any other time in history. What amazes me is that the author does not warn the reader to approach each story with a dose of healthy sceptism, as if, the hype from the interviews is necessary to encourage others to risk their assets for a chance of obtaining rankings in the gold spoon club.I think more of the questions should have focused on the consequences of failure while day trading so the reader could see how high the stakes are for these day traders. All the interviewees agreed that once trading starts there is no beginners clubs. Trading may be against some of the best day traders in the world. These traders have no reservation about their desire to win. They are willing to admit failure and quickly get out realizing they want to win over the long run. In short this is an narrative of the forces of fear and greed that drive price and volume in the stock market.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last chapter on money management is the best
The last chapter on daytrading money management is worth the
price of the books alone.

In that chapter Friedfertig and West tell us the real secrets to (day)trading.

There are dozens of successful daytrading patterns.
But you wont keep a dime unless you follow advice in the last chapter. ... Read more

This book is an easy read, it is definately all about the advantages of the EHR, says little or nothing about how this impacts existing employees in this career field, probably because it will make them obsolete.Oh well, so it goes!

Product Description
Aimed at both the novice and expert in IT security and industrial control systems (ICS), this book will help readers gain a better understanding of protecting ICSs from electronic threats. Cyber security is getting much more attention and 'SCADA security' (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) is a particularly important part of this field, as are Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs)-and all the other, field controllers, sensors, and drives, emission controls, and that make up the 'intelligence' of modern industrial buildings and facilities. This book will help the reader better understand what is industrial control system cyber security, why is it different than IT security, what has really happened to date, and what needs to be done. Loads of practical advice is offered on everything from clarity on current cyber-security systems and how they can be integrated into general IT systems, to how to conduct risk assessments and how to obtain certifications, to future trends in legislative and regulatory issues affecting industrial security. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Important for EMS engineers
This book is a must read for all system engineers involved in critical infrastructure protection systems.Mr. Wiess's grasp of the topic is insightful and his recommendations are founded in good engineering practices.Easy book to read with case studies fully developed making it excellent for student, engineer and management.

4-0 out of 5 stars Protecting ICS from Electronic Threats
I first had learned about the book Protecting Industrial Control Systems from Electronic Threats on a SCADA perpectives blog.In my current postion I am a member of a team assigned to protect Cybersecurity assets in an ICS environment so I made sure that I purchased the book when it was released.

I liked the book and recommend it for any individual that has a strong background in IT security (such as myselft) yet little or no experience with ICS. The case studies serve to highlight the fact that ICS can and have been subject to "attack".

Appendix 5: Typical Distributed Control Systme Procurement Specification provided insights for me to what I need to pay closer attention to when new systems or systems upgrades occur.

I could not agree more that a training program needs to be in place to allow security staff not only assure compliance but to know that the systems are secure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Systemic security issues finally get attention
Industrial control systems (ICS) execute large-scale manufacturing and commodity product delivery processes. They run electronic power grids, nuclear power plants, water and sewage treatment plants, transportation signaling, and numerous other recognizably critical infrastructures. Joe Weiss walks the layman effortlessly through the world of ICS cyber-components: distributed control systems, programmable logic controllers, intelligent electronic devices, remote terminal units, and supervisory control and data acquisition (DCS, PLC, IED, RTU, and SCADA). Along the way, he points out the cybersecurity vulnerabilities inherent in the design and operation of these systems. With examples that can be directly traced to headline news, he describes how easy it is to disrupt these systems with simple cybersecurity hacks.

Though it may seem odd to the reader that such obviously critical systems are so easily disrupted, the way that Weiss explains the evolution of ICS and the myths that surround attempts at ICS technical security evaluation, his story line makes sense. For example, a typical software program lives 3-5 years before a major architectural change. A typical industrial control system lives 15-20. That means that the technology components in an ICS are likely to be at least 10 years old, very outdated by technology standards, and correspondingly vulnerable to today's sophisticated cyber-attacks. In addition, cybersecurity threats to ICS are not the same as cybersecurity threats to mainstream information technology. An ICS is typically much more sensitive to very small changes in electronic components. Hence, technology controls that are often proscribed for mainstream information assurance, like scanning and patching, can actually harm these systems more than they help them.

Weiss does a great job of bringing attention to this serious national security issue. The book is as engaging as it is rare. It will benefit anyone who is interested in critical infrastructure protection or systems security engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Describing the Problems
There are those that feel that this book is lacking in some way or another and proudly tell you so.I am not one of those people. The book is not aimed at the professional cyber type, but rather at the common man.The intent is to place before the people a "common sense of the problem".Before you can solve a problem you need to be able to describe that problem.Few have ever described the problem in a way that allows all of us to understand what is going on.

For the most part, most of us have no knowledge of control systems, much feel that we even interact with control systems on a daily basis. This is the point of the book, "We, the people" deal with control systems 24x7 in all aspects of our lives. As we are carried into the "SmartGrid", whether we want it or not, we will be required to deal with control systems. We currently have control systems in our homes, don't believe me just look around and see (the thermostat on your wall, the refrigerator, the hot water heater, the stove, the oven, the microwave, the smoke alarm, ...) what makes these work are the control systems in them. The Smartgrid wants to link these things together, and allow external controls of these systems.

I, for one, applaud the book as placing a face on the beast and offering a framework on how we need to get that beast under control.I am also reminded, as I read this book and others on the same topic, about the blind wise men the first time they encounter and Elephant. <[...]> WE are all groping for the description of the problem, but most are ready to supply a solution when they still can not define the problem. Are all of these people wrong, consider the blind wise men.I prefer to use anything I can to open my eyes and get a view of the problem and this book helps to resolve that problem.

I would recommend this book to anyone that needs to understand the problem but is not technically oriented in the cyber world. All of you that are trying to understand why you are spending all that money on something that you can not see, touch, or feel will gain from this book. For those of you trying to justifiy why you need the money, use the book to assist.I look forward to more from this author in the future.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing: A Quality Editor - Pass On This
Joe Weiss's, one of the pioneers in control system security, attempt at writing an overarching book on control system security is almost unreadable. It meanders, doesn't provide information or opinions in a coherent way, and continues to fail at the end with a set of 40+ disjointed, bulleted recommendations. The recommendations range from "Determine what you really want to do, and do it" to block LAND attacks. It is not that all of these recommendations are wrong; they are just not presented in a useful manner with the appropriate background set up in earlier parts of the book.

This is disappointing because Joe has the necessary experience and knowledge, as well as a distinct point of view, to write a compelling book. I would have loved to read an organized explanation on his beyond security definition of cyber incidents, how they should be addressed today and what he feels we need to do in the future, but it is not in this book. The lack of solutions or description of the path forward, beyond the detailed recommendation for an ICS-CERT in Chapter 9, is glaring. Are we suppose to live with fragile systems from an electronic threat standpoint or what do we need to do as a community to improve the situation?

Ultimately I blame the editor or reviewers because they should have been pointing out rather obvious problems with most of the chapters.

If you do pick up this book, skip to the Selected Case Histories in Chapters 14 and 15. These 40 pages show what could have been, and the section on the 1998 Maroochy Wastewater Hack is the best writeup I've seen on this oft discussed event. These chapters are useful for those new to control system security whether they come from IT Security or Operations. I will quibble a bit with the Olympic Pipeline Company Cyber Security Issues section in Chapter 15. Joe points out numerous flaws in the cyber security program there, but there is no evidence that these had anything to do with the event. In fact I think this discussion weakens his premise that we need to be concerned with cyber incidents, not just cyber security incidents.

There are nuggets, but they pass without substantiation or comment. For example, in Chapter 1 - Background Joe writes:

"In fact, on September 10, 2001, I held two panel sessions on ICS security at ISA Expo in Houston, Texas. Attendees also included auto parts manufacturers and even a dog food manufacturer. The next day the world changed forever. From that infamous date onward, the perception of ICS security changed from a business issue to a national security imperative. This had the unfortunate implication of shifting the onus from the end user to the government"

I wanted to understand why he thinks this was unfortunate. What would have happened if it was still just a business issue for the owner/operator? It seems to fly in the face of his feeling that we need a firm regulatory hand and would be better off in FISMA applied to all.

Another problem is the intended audience was not effectively considered. If it was a control system novice, this book would not have helped and others are better. If it is was an owner/operator there was little to help them move forward with cyber security. If the reader was experienced in control system security there is little new here in fact or thought.

Some basic details on the book. It is 320 pages long; half of that is the main body of the book. The second half is Appendices including Acronyms, Glossary, Comparison of Definitions, CSIS White Paper and a DCS RFP. The DCS RFP and Joe's notes on the absence of well defined security requirements may be of interest to those who have not seen a control system RFP.

The wait continues for the definitive control system security book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this book
I'll try to be short. Don't buy this book. I have knowledge in electronics and he just states some plain wrong facts as to testing components in circuits. The writing is terrible. I don't know who calls this guy an expert ( and he may be) but he does not know how to explain things. Buy this book if you want to remain clueless in repairing electronics. DO NOT BUY!!!! I would have rated it 0 but it wouldn't let me.

1-0 out of 5 stars confusing to the layman, i cant speak for the pros, but amateurs stay away!
i found this book obtuse and very hard to read. if youre not an advanced electrician i would start somewhere else first as this title spends very little time on the basic mechanics of electronics and is mostly full of 'helpful case histories" which i found pretty much useless. the publishers should take the title and rewrite the entire contents instead of adding on to an esoteric book written 20 years ago in the most confusing venacular ive ever attempted to read. thumbs down.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, old info, Not very helpful
I do have this book and it is a disappointment. It list some problems you may have and some steps to try.But if your problem is not listed in the examples your kind of stuck.Trying to list the problems and steps to take that can come up with the millions of consumer electronics devices is not going to work.I don't know what is, but this book doesn't really do what the title says.I have some other H.Davidson books and they are not that helpfull. There seems to be a bag of tricks you can try when repairing things. i.e. ESR meter, flowcharts, curver tracer, overheating chip, call the manufacture, etc. But when those don't work I think you have to study how the circuit works and understand what is happening and what happens when certain parts fail. This can take a long time.Maybe there is a better system, but it is not in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Useful Information
I recommend this book as a good reference, but it helps if you aren't a novice. Sometimes schematics aren't available and you have to learn how to improvise. A person bitten by the electronics bug typically endures hours of frustration and failure before gaining enough experience to troubleshoot and repair electronic equipment. This book should guide you in the right direction and hopefully save you some time. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Short on technical detail, long on "product placement"
This book could be helpful to a DIY boatowner with more dollars than sense who has an aversion to hiring qualified help, or for a recipe-trained technician without theoretical background who wants some more recipes and an excuse to buy more expensive toys. For the fully-qualified electrical/electronic engineer or technician who already has a good understanding of electrical engineering concepts and the use of electronic test equipment, it looks more like a collection of directions and application notes for specific products. This is mostly information I would expect to find in the manuals for specific instruments or on their manufacturers' websites. There is a niche for a book that does what this book SOUNDS like it does from the title and blurb. Unfortunately, for my money, this is not that book.

I just got ABYC instructor Ed Sherman's new book on Advanced Marine Electronics "Advanced Marine Electrics and Electronics Troubleshooting", it's a Marine Electricians guide to new techniques (Like TDR), new tools and methods for the Marine Electrician. It's an adjunct to the powerboaters guide.

BTW: TDR Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is based in conductor reflection timing (on a return pulse) which used in testing wiring and optical fiber.

Minor Wants: More. I'd have liked a deeper Oscilloscope section and more engine electronics (J1939) stuff and NMEA2000. Pictures are profuse and clear. I started reading the ASE Advanced Performance series in conjunction with this book and would have liked more of the engine electronics integration knowledge brought here. (Picoscope type stuff). Would also like selection criteria for quality electronics (e.g. explain NITS or candela and contrast levels for visibility, a better explanation on pulse width modulation and motor control where the terms are used in the text. Explaining the NMEA 2000 technical architecture deeper would be nice. The author states that it is an additional book for the ABYC electrician and electronics installer, but some basics on electronics would help. 200 pages is too short, but it's a great book.

BTW: Pulse Width modulation (PWM) is a means of controlling a (DC) motor's speed by providing longer or shorter pulses (from a onboard systems microprocessor). More "On" time means faster speed. (Think flicking a fan switch on and off.)

This book is a must get, yet I am only left wanting more. A 2nd edition would be have to get. I loved the ground loop explanation and the need for isolation on network systems on boats.

One of the best parts is the stuff the electronics tech can build.

BTW: When electronics have more than one point of grounding, EMI (electronic noise is propagated through the system. Problems can occur with networks like cheap ethernet (which is why opto isolation is recommended) on boats where ground loop noise is severe. A ground loop is a bad thing, in your network and in your home stereo (causes a hum).

Like any book under a million pages on the subject, there is a lot more you want. His advice focuses on hand held Microprocessor test tools. This is excellent guidance for average marine electronics tech, although I am not likely to give up my old Tek 11801C TDR or my SD-24 sampling head for the stuff I do.

The old technique, new technique section locked in the 5 star rating for me.

Product Description
The global shift toward delivering services online requires organizations to evolve from using traditional paper files and storage to more modern electronic methods. There has however been very little information on just how to navigate this change-until now. Implementing Electronic Document and Record Management Systems explains how to efficiently store and access electronic documents and records in a manner that allows quick and efficient access to information so an organization may meet the needs of its clients.

The book addresses a host of issues related to electronic document and records management systems (EDRMS). From starting the project to systems administration, it details every aspect in relation to implementation and management processes. The text also explains managing cultural changes and business process re-engineering that organizations undergo as they switch from paper-based records to electronic documents. It offers case studies that examine how various organizations across the globe have implemented EDRMS.

While the task of creating and employing an EDRMS may seem daunting at best, Implementing Electronic Document and Record Management Systems is the resource that can provide you with the direction and guidance you need to make the transition as seamless as possible.

2-0 out of 5 stars so outdated it should be out of print
This book doesn't even mention active pickups or noisefree single-coil pickups. It lists about 20 major manufacturers, of which I'd only heard about maybe 5 of them, and then I'm a gear head.Of course basic electronic principles haven't changed since this book was written but come on.I generally don't agree with folks who say "you can get all this information on the internet" because there's a value in having everything carefully preselected and gathered in one place, but this book is so dated I would recommend people to use google instead.I regret buying this.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good electronics primer for guitar...
I ordered this book as a reference for changing out the cheap electrics in my offshore guitar. The understanding that I gained is invaluable and I now have much more confidence in my electronics-oriented guitar projects. The reason for the four star rating is I found the book to be a bit dated as far as what is available today. The glossary of terms and explanation of pickup types alone is worth the price of the book...

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated!
This book may have been cutting edge when it was first published but it needs to be scrapped and updated. Too much info about Shecter pickups and stuff nobody uses anymore. Some good information about how the electronics work, pots, switches pickups etc. Modern guitars have piezos, midi pickups. There was a brief mention of piezos but nothing on midi. There are lots of new pickups on the market and these are discussed either. Still, I found the book informative just not current.

2-0 out of 5 stars The best book available on guitar electronics, twenty years ago
Now there's just very little point. There's nothing in here that you can't find with a quick internet search. There are a number of books, and book types, that have become irrelevant with the net. This is one of them. ... Read more

Written from the perspective of an experienced commentator on Korean and global business, this book presents not simply a narrative or an adulatory and uncritical account of Samsung's rise, but a considered analysis of the secrets of success that both business students and CEOs will want to read and consider applying to their own companies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at an Asian business
Although many business books promise business success, one of the strongest themes of academic criticism of this literature should be that, in business, success does not last, according to Tony Michell in this book. The book tells the story of the rise of the Samsung group of companies and the spectacular success in the last decade of Samsung Electronics.

Most business books written in English relate to businesses in the US, the UK or other predominantly English-speaking countries with similar cultures, but the rising importance of Asian businesses in the global economy makes it increasingly necessary that Westerners understand the driving forces behind successful Asian businesses. Although this book is not written by a Samsung insider, it is written by an academic with extensive knowledge of the Korean business environment.

Particularly interesting insights include: the influence and control that a single founder and the founder's family seem to have had over Korean businesses that have grown very large;the degree to which Korean laws have resulted in the unusual corporate structures; the ways in which Korean culture has helped and hindered the success of Samsung; and the continuing struggle between old and new cultural forces within the company.

There is some repetition in the text, and I found some parts of the book less interesting than others, but on the whole I found it both interesting and informative, and I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the electronics industry or who is just curious about the story behind the company that makes those mobile phones, LCD displays and other consumer electronic devices. ... Product Description
A visible presence for some two decades, electronic literature has already produced many works that deserve the rigorous scrutiny critics have long practiced with print literature. Only now, however, with Electronic Literature by N. Katherine Hayles, do we have the first systematic survey of the field and an analysis of its importance, breadth, and wide-ranging implications for literary study.

Hayles's book is designed to help electronic literature move into the classroom. Her systematic survey of the field addresses its major genres, the challenges it poses to traditional literary theory, and the complex and compelling issues at stake. She develops a theoretical framework for understanding how electronic literature both draws on the print tradition and requires new reading and interpretive strategies. Grounding her approach in the evolutionary dynamic between humans and technology, Hayles argues that neither the body nor the machine should be given absolute theoretical priority. Rather, she focuses on the interconnections between embodied writers and users and the intelligent machines that perform electronic texts.

Through close readings of important works, Hayles demonstrates that a new mode of narration is emerging that differs significantly from previous models. Key to her argument is the observation that almost all contemporary literature has its genesis as electronic files, so that print becomes a specific mode for electronic text rather than an entirely different medium. Hayles illustrates the implications of this condition with three contemporary novels that bear the mark of the digital.

Included with the book is a CD, The Electronic Literature Collection, Volume 1, containing sixty new and recent works of electronic literature with keyword index, authors' notes, and editorial headnotes. Representing multiple modalities of electronic writing--hypertext fiction, kinetic poetry, generative and combinatory forms, network writing, codework, 3D, narrative animations, installation pieces, and Flash poetry--the ELC 1 encompasses comparatively low-tech work alongside heavily coded pieces. Complementing the text and the CD-ROM is a website offering resources for teachers and students, including sample syllabi, original essays, author biographies, and useful links. Together, the three elements provide an exceptional pedagogical opportunity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars EFI Book
I bought this book because I am working on a carburetor to fuel injection conversion for my classic car.I was hoping this book would give me some insight into the actual tuning process of an EFI system once the conversion had been made.Instead, this book spends a great deal of time covering "Basic Electronics" (ie. Volts, Amps, Ohms), the "Tools and Equipment" (ie Multimeter, fuel pressure gauge) all of the components of an EFI system (ie. coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor, TPS) and describes them in great detail. Then there are a few short pages in the middle of the book in a section called "Tuning Maps and Basic Engine Calibration".This is where I was hoping to gain a little insight but the book stays so close to the side of the theoretical, it really doesn't give any more clues on how this would actually be done.I understand that each car, engine and ECU combination is unique and no book could ever cover every combination, but I was hoping to have a better footing when I delve into the tuning of my EFI system. Finally, when that short section is over, with half the book to go, the rest of the pages are devoted to advertising (pgs 57-126)!This may be where this book is best suited or certainly where the most effort was devoted. If you can't decided whether to buy the Accel, Autotronic, Edelbrock or Holley ECU, then this book will help you with the different offerings from each of a bout 11 different companies.Once you've made your choice however, good luck with the setup. You're on your own from there.Just like guess and check with needles and jets on the carb I just got rid of!

    5-0 out of 5 stars efi 101
what i like the most about the book is how easy it is to understand what they are talking about, some of the other books i have read use too many words in which i have to pull out the dictionary to understand, this book is simple and straight forward.i would recomend it to any body that is new at the new efi world that is coming from the old school of carburated v8's.enjoy and learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
This book explains how EFI systems work, the inputs and outputs of ECU, and talks about diferent aftermarket ECUs, their principals.
It's a good book to start understanding EFI.
In my case, I already knew the EFI systems, except for the way the aftermarket ECUs work, I mean their software, so I will look for something more specific on car electronics, but still a good buy.

Great book. Very detailed. Volume, cube and flow formula's, plus many more. Maybe a bit deep for beginners, and LOTS of Banks stuff (if you're into that).

2-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on aftermarket EFI, Not the original system

    Product Description
An integrated Electric Energy Systems curriculum consists of three segments: Power Electronics, Power Systems and Electric Drives. This textbook follows a top-down systems-level approach to Power Electronics to highlight interrelationships between these sub-fields. This textbook is intended to teach students both the fundamentals and practical design in a single-semester course. A building-block approach to power electronics allows an in-depth discussion of several important topics that are left out in conventional courses, for example, designing feedback control, power-factor-correction circuits, soft-switching, and SV-PWM which is a PWM technique far superior to Sine-PWM, to name a few. The topics in this book are carefully sequenced to maintain continuity and student interest throughout the course. In a fast pace course with proper student background, this book can be covered from front-to-back in one semester. However, the material is arranged in such a way that an instructor, to accommodate the students background, can either omit an entire topic or cover it quickly to provide just an overview using the PowerPoint-based slides on the accompanying CD, without interrupting the flow. ... The Author goes into extensive detail and tends to go on and on and on. Its definitely not a light read and its very hard to follow. The diagrams are not labeled very well and rather simple and stupid. Definitely not a good resource book or to keep forever. He doesn't explain things in black and white and tends to drift off on tangents in which you get lost in. I loved the class but hated the book. The book could have been written a lot clearer and to the point. If you don't have a PhD, good luck.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Descriptive Non-mathematical Approach
Intended for use in an electronics based industrial/manufacturing course, this is an introductory text on process control. It stresses a hands-on operational approach rather than concentrating on mathematical design. The 24 chapters (including one chapter on the CD) can be conbined in various ways to teach courses in several areas including: electrical motors, solid-state variable-speed drives, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), servomechanisms, sensors, and various specialty areas such as instrumentation or process control.

In the PLC area, the Allen-Bradley SLC-500 is used for examples. This provides a consistency with the equipment used in today's education and training program.

In addition to the chapter on practical applications, the CD that comes with the book also includes a lab manual so the student does not need to purchase another book. The publisher also provides additional material related to this title on their web site, however as of yet the on-line material still refers to the second edition rather than to this new third.

This book is well thought out, it's approach is sound. Very little mathematics are used in the book, it is more of a descriptive, hands on book. ... Read more
