I aquired this book as part of the price of tuition for an IEEE class on electrical contacts.

This is more of a collection of individual papers or topics than a text book.It is basically a continuation of Ragnar Holm'sfamous work.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sent wrong book
I ordered the 1981 edition of Engineering Electromagnetics, and recieved the 1958(!) extremely dated version.I recommend that anyone BE SURE TO SPECIFY the edition they would like. The latest edition in print was (I believe) 1981.

I am attempting to return this book now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners
This is the best book I ever found on this topic. Its assumes you a beginner and takes you to the engineering level. William Hayt has an outstanding way of communication with the reader. All you require is concentration and imagination power.

The book is well structured. First four chapters are specially of interest for beginners. I will strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in telecommunications.

The reason of giving four stars is that it does not give answers to the questions in the book(I read 6th edition), you have to get them from web site(mentioned in the book). The only difference between 5th and 6th edition is of drill problems and end of chapter problems(Theory is same). 6th edition contains an extra chapter on antenna.

As a conclusion, I strongly recommend this book to beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most accessible Electromagnetics text yet
Electromagnetics is a subject that can be made as interesting or as dull as possible by a. the instructor and b. the book.

I was lucky on both counts. And the book I chose was this (in addition to John Kraus).

You must love William Hayt. He is one of the liveliest authors in electrical engineering. The way the text is presented, the examples, the problems solved and the like will remove the "ELECTROMAGNETICS IS TOUGH..." myth completely.

This may not be the best book around (for the purists), but it is certainly the most accessible! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth It
Buy the Power System Analysis book instead. You would be better off.Only helps with Engineering Economics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Comprehensive Electrical Engineering Text on the Market
Mega kudos to Mr. John Camara for authoring an excellent reference text.Whether you are a seasoned electrical engineer or an out-of-your-element Naval Architect, this book will guide you through the exciting world of electrons.

I recommend this book to all engineers regardless of specific discipline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book helped me pass the Electrical PE - not as bad as reviews
This book was an extremely helpful resource in the exam.It is well written and covers a wide range of material.I agree with some of the previous reviews. The book is quite large and the organization can be a bit clunky, especially for someone studying for the Electrical and Electronics exam, where material is scattered throughout the book. But there were a few questions that showed up on the exam as wildcards and I was able to quickly solve them using this book.I recommend placing color-coded tabs at each section that is relevant to your particular exam discipline.I found that having a single reference with tabbed pages was quite useful.I would like to have seen more examples in this book.Yet I assume the accompanying Sample Exam book contains a wide range of examples.I definitely give credit to this book in helping me pass the exam.In the end, this is not the best reference book that I have ever read, but it helped me pace my studying and it is the best comprehensive book that I have found on the market.Unfortunately study materials have not kept up with the new PE exam format. If you are truly dedicated in studying over a few months for the PE exam, purchase this book and you won't go wrong. As a note, I also chose the Kaplan PE Electrical and Electronics Review book and accompanying Sample Exam. Those books are not nearly as well written as the PPI book, but again the resources for the new EE PE exam are limited and the Kaplan books, while in need of a proof-edit, are a good complement to the PPI book.I would recommend all three books for the serious reviewer.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a PE exam material
I can reduce the size of this book by 75% and still accomplish 100% of what it does. I'll ask for around $10 for this crappy book.

The author is probably inclined into displaying his cut-copy-paste skills more than actually taking the time to walk through the concepts.

If you take my advice, buy the following. 1) Kaplan review book 2) Gringer for power system analysis 3) NEC code book 4) some basic books for circuit analysis (shaums series will suffice).

Advice from a person who failed because I used Camera's book for studying. I learnt a lot, probably to do a PhD .. not PE.

5-0 out of 5 stars PPI EE Reference Manual
A little heavy to carry. But a world of information. Well written. I enjoyed the section on: Computers & Control Systems. I have many of their books and reference materials. I suggest you buy their bundle. Good luck on the exam...: ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars solving problems is the best way to learn engineering.
here in brasil we have portuguese versions of schaum's outline books on many subjects.since I was an electrical engineering graduate student, I have studied the theory on the specific books of a related field and after that I tested my knowledge on schaum's outline books, always improving my skills by solving problems, which are in my opinion, the main reason of being an well succeeded engineer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good coverage of a subject most EE's don't study any more
I agree with everyone else who says that the number of errors in numerical calculations are unacceptable in this book. That is too bad, because if that problem was rectified this would be a great little overview of a topic not really taught to Electrical Engineering undergraduates anymore - power and power calculations. Most EE's that graduate today are more signal processing or computer engineers than pure electrical engineers, and being able to work with power if you stay onthe technical end of things long enough is bound to come up.

The math is really all over the map in this book - many calculations only require basic math, others involve calculus, still others involve iterative numerical methods. In fact, chapter eight is pretty much dedicated to the subject of numerical methods. The author at least hits the high points of all aspect of power systems. There is a great deal of material on transmission lines as well as the calculations involved when working with underground cables. One chapter is dedicated to fault calculations and discusses how the operation of a power system departs from normal after the occurrence of a fault. Chapter seven develops general solution methods that are amenable to the computer solution of power system network problems. Later in the outline, the author gets into subjects involving heavier power including a good introduction to three-phase power. A final and very short chapter discusses how to protect equipment against abnormal currents and voltages. The author does a good job of introducing the reader to all of the symbols that you are likely to see on a power system diagram, and their meanings.

In spite of the errors in the numerical calculations, I'd still say it's a good buy for the price. You're not going to find a good book that even touches these subjects for under a hundred dollars. If the errors were cleaned up, this Schaum's outline would be an invaluable classic.

1-0 out of 5 stars stinks and useless
This book should not be sold to students because it is no good. I felt like my money went down the drain due to the fact that the book is very stinks and useless.

I should get my money back because the book is helpless to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book,
Worthy of being considered a book of the Schaum collection. Very good!

2-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had read the reviews about the errors before buying.
Ok for review of power systems, However many typo's or errors. If I was Mr Syed A. Nasar I would be embarrased to have my name on this book. In the first chapter alone there are more than 10 errors. If anyone knows where to find the McGraw Hill errata page for this manual please post the URL, it will be a great service. If I find it I'll repost. ... Read more

Product Description
Athanasios Papoulis' classic text was the first to present digital techniques as an integral part of a unified course in system theory and design, rather than as a separate unit. The enduring success of Circuits and Systems undoubtedly is due in large part to the author's concentration on fundamental ideas explained in the context of simple illustrations. The text develops analog systems parallel to digital systems, emphasizes the concepts of linearity, superposition, impulse response, frequency response, and system function.Laplace transforms and z-transforms are treated briefly, but completely, and the introduction to digital and sampled-analog simulation is based on the approximation of the convolution integral by a sum.The development of the material as a deductive discipline strengthens the student's analytical ability in the engineering course. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars More useful for grad student than undergrad
This is the textbook used (still) by my EE program. Why a book published in 1980 is still the only required text for a Systems and Signals class in 2005, I'll never know(seems like something would have changed in the world of electronics in the past 25 years). This book is nearly impossible to learn from by studying independently.Very few examples, and at least half of every page is taken up by underexplained equations.Very hard to follow on the undergrad level. For the undergrad student, I highly recommend the book by Lathi. It much easier to understand and study on your own. After buying the Lathi book, I went from being struggling for hours upon hours trying to understand a theory to having a concise, very easy to follow reference that greatly cut my study time down.

Since this book is out of print, probably very few people have it as a required text.I do not recommend trying to learn from this book. However, it can be useful to someone who understands the majority of the concepts presented in this book who wants a reference without a lot of explanation. This book is basically a large formula sheet. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
You can learn E&M for the first time only once.I took my first course on E&M in the Physics department. We used the book by Purcell. It was intuitive, visual, engaging almost poetry. Then I took my next semester in the Electrical Engineering department. We used Hayt.It was mundane, pedestrian, just the facts madam. And yet I learned from it.Since then I've picked up half a dozen introductory E&M texts. But I go back to Purcell for understanding and Hayt for engineering help. But I've looked at those other books and I don't think any of them would have been any better. So that earns Hayt a solid 3 stars. All these books discuss skin effect, but only Hayt discusses the effect of skin depth on inductance. For that, it gets an extra star.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad selections
This book decides to highlight the most useless forms of common electromagnetic equations. It will lead you to solve problems in a cookie cutter fashion and never learn electromagnetism.

2-0 out of 5 stars About the worst book on the subject!!
I have more than 5 books on this subject. I am a self studier, I read a few books on each topic. I never found any useful information from this book. This book don't seemed to go into detail of each subject, just give the formulas. If you use it in school, good luck!! If you study on your own like me, get some other books like Cheng's.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.
I'm an EE undergrad student and I have to struggle to use this book on a weekly basis. This book lacks sufficient examples, doesn't clearly derive the equations it uses, and worst of all uses TERRIBLE wording in explaining concepts, typically making them more complicated than they already are.

DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK! "Oh well I have to, for my class." No, you don't. Get the homework problems from a friend or Google Books. Then do yourself a favor and buy the book by Ida, that book is fantastic. It explains things clearly, telling you why certain methods are preferred, and it has examples that cover different parts of each concept.

Worst book ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
There are lot of books on undergraduate electromagnetics. This would bein my list. The books I have and recommend are
1) D.K Cheng
2) Hayt and Buck
3) Ulaby
4) Edminister - Schaum's outline electromagnetics.
5) Spiegel - Schaum's outline vector calculus.
6) You should use Finney and George - calculus along with these books.

The book you should avoid is one by Kraus!!.
If you want to master undergraduate electromagnetics, you should have the 6 books!. There are people who complain about (1), (2) and (3). This is because their mathematical background is not strong. So I recommend (4), (5) and (6) to be used along with (1), (2) and (3).
You simply cannot write books better than (1),(2) and (3).
Those who complain ahout this book, should increase their mathematical background. ... Read more

Product Description
In many cases, the beginning engineering student is thrown into upper-level engineering courses without an adequate introduction to the basic material. This, at best, causes undue stress on the student as they feel unprepared when faced with unfamiliar material, and at worst, results in students dropping out of the program or changing majors when they discover that their chosen field of engineering is not what they thought it was.The purpose of this text is to introduce the student to a general cross-section of the field of electrical and computer engineering. The text is aimed at incoming freshmen, and as such, assumes that the reader has a limited to nonexistent background in electrical engineering and knowledge of no more than pre-calculus in the field of mathematics.By exposing students to these fields at an introductory level, early in their studies, they will have both a better idea of what to expect in later classes and a good foundation of knowledge upon which to build. ... Product Description
The object of this book is to quickly teach an electrical engineer or technologist how to use Mathcad. Mathcad simultaneously solves and documents calculations. It is oriented toward non-programmers who need to solve numerical engineering problems. Users like Mathcad because its programs follow the natural format of manual calculations. Complete keystroke-to-keystroke details are provided for problem solution and documentation. The reader learns by example. As a calculating tool, Mathcad solves equations. The equations are entered into Mathcad in a format similar to that used in manual calculations. It will solve mesh equations with real or complex numbers and will solve differential equations. Outputs can be numerical or graphical. Mathcad will also do symbolic calculations, meaning that it can reduce complex systems of equations to simpler equations. Documenting calculations is a major reason that Mathcad is used in modern industry. Calculations that in the past might have been recorded in notebooks, or even on easily lost scraps of paper, are now done with Mathcad to take advantage of the accuracy, neatness, traceability, and standardization it provides. Mathcad is available in a free 30 day demonstration version. The key features of Mathcad can be learned in 30 days. ... Read more
