Product Description
How can one be assured that computer codes that solve differential equations are correct? Standard practice using benchmark testing no longer provides full coverage because today's production codes solve more complex equations using more powerful algorithms. By verifying the order-of-accuracy of the numerical algorithm implemented in the code, one can detect most any coding mistake that would prevent correct solutions from being computed. Verification of Computer Codes in Computational Science and Engineering sets forth a powerful alternative called OVMSP: Order-Verification via the Manufactured Solution Procedure. This procedure has two primary components: using the Method of Manufactured Exact Solutions to create analytic solutions to the fully-general differential equations solved by the code and using grid convergence studies to confirm the order-of-accuracy. The authors present a step-by-step procedural guide to OVMSP implementation and demonstrate its effectiveness.Properly implemented, OVMSP offers an exciting opportunity to identify virtually all coding 'bugs' that prevent correct solution of the governing partial differential equations. Verification of Computer Codes in Computational Science and Engineering shows you how this can be done. The treatment is clear, concise, and suitable both for developers of production quality simulation software and as a reference for computational science and engineering professionals. ... Read more

Product Description
Recent global anxiety indicates that more focus needs to be directed at economic issues related to industry. Conventional techniques often do not adequately embrace the integrated global factors that affect unique industries and industry focused computational tools have not been readily available. Until now. Computational Economic Analysis for Engineering and Industry presents direct computational tools, techniques, models, and approaches for economic analysis with a specific focus on industrial and engineering processes.

Here are just a few of the topics you'll find:

  • New economic analysis models and techniques
  • Tent-shaped cash flows
  • Industrial economic analysis
  • Project-based economic measures
  • Profit ratio analysis
  • Equity break-even point
  • Utility based analysis
  • Project-balance analysis
  • Customized ENGINEA software tool
  • Engineering conversion factors

The authors supply downloadable software, ENGINEA, that allows you to easily perform the various techniques outlined in the text, such as investment justification, breakeven analysis, and replacement analysis. Providing a high-level presentation of economic analysis of the unique aspects of industrial processes, they integrate mathematical models, optimization, computer analysis, and managerial decision processes. A comprehensive treatment of economic analysis considering the specific needs of industry, the book is a pragmatic alternative to conventional economic analysis books.

This book is terrible. The book has numerous errors and is filled with awkward text.If your professor requires this book for a class then he or she probably has an economic or professional interest in the book.At a minimum, the learning process is hampered by this book. With that said, my copy is for sale on Amazon.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hm...could be better, MUCH better.
For a first edition, this book had some major flaws.Subsequent editions could have some promise. However, after using it for a required course in strategic cost management, (a required text as per one of the authors...interesting) major equation mistakes and poor readability made this a VERY bad choice for any cost or economics course. In fact, I would venture to say that this book should be shelved indefinitely by the authors until a second edition and major rewrites are accomplished.

Overall, (after personally using and reading over 20 different economics and cost texts over the years), this is by far the worst and most confusing book written on the subject. ... Read more

    Product Description

The application of computer modelling using numerical techniques is a fast developing field in acoustics. Many practical acoustic problems, such as room acoustics, environmental noise propagation and transducer design, cannot be solved by closed form analytical solutions and in the past have been handled using simplified approximations which are very limited in the scope of application and detail and accuracy which they can provide. Numerical techniques in acoustics have undergone tremendous development over the past two decades, spurred on by the need for more accurate and detailed modelling and made practical by the rapid increase in affordable desktop computing power.

The major numerical techniques which can be applied to acoustic transducer design, room acoustics prediction, environmental noise modelling, and other general modelling of noise radiation and diffraction are brought together. The basic principles are covered, but the book emphasises the application of the techniques and is illustrated with cases. This makes it a reference for undergraduates, postgraduates who are starting their research, and engineers in industry who need to find a solution for a specific practical problem.

    Product Description
There has been a substantial increase in the use of mathematical methods for modeling in natural and engineering sciences. Among a great variety of problems that have been solved successfully, are inverse problems. Inverse thermal problems involve the evaluation of boundary or initial conditions as well as thermal properties of a body from the remaining boundary or some internal conditions. This encompasses thermal designing, process controlling, optimum planning of experiments and interpretation of experimental results. The success of any method for solving inverse problems lies not only in using elegant mathematical formulae but also in the stability of results when experimental data are used. This book presents a comprehensive study of efficient methods for solving inverse thermal problems. ... Read more

    Product Description

The subject of the book is the comprehensive consideration of uncertainty in the numerical analysis, the safety assessment, and the design of structures. Stochastic as well as non-stochastic uncertainty is treated on the basis of the superordinated uncertainty model fuzzy randomness. This new uncertainty model contains the special cases of real valued random variables and fuzzy variables and permits to take account of both uncertainty characteristics simultaneously. The book introduces to the problem of uncertainty and provides a current survey of relevant uncertainty models and their application in civil engineering. The necessary, special mathematical basics of the fuzzy set theory and the theory of fuzzy random variables are explained in an engineering manner and illustrated by way of examples. Basic ideas and methods for appropriately quantifying uncertain structural parameters are presented and demonstrated by means of characteristic examples. For processing uncertainty in structural analysis, safety assessment, and structural design completely new algorithms are introduced and described in detail as fuzzy structural analysis, fuzzy probabilistic safety assessment, and fuzzy cluster design. The application of the new methods is demonstrated for selected examples from civil engineering, their essential advantages are emphasized. For the first time this represents a coherent, overall concept for considering uncertainty in civil engineering.

The book in particular addresses to civil engineers and requires a university degree as well as basic knowledge in stochastics. But also for mechanical engineers, colleagues from applied mathematics, and other people who are interested in uncertainty problems the book represents a suitable introduction to the problem of uncertainty modeling and provides general solutions and algorithms, which may also be applied to problems from other fields beyond engineering.

Assessing the engineering integrity of materials, components, structures and systems is a fundamental requirement of engineering design and analysis. The ubiquity of the computer and the development of sophisticated software and testing facilities, have led to simulation models which can reliably predict behaviour and performance of materials and structures with a high level of confidence. As new materials and simulation models are developed, it becomes even more critical to test for engineering integrity. This book contains the proceedings of the first International Conference on Computational Methods and Testing for Engineering Integrity, held in Kuala Lumpur in March 1996. ... Read more
