5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I used this book to study for the April 2009 PE exam, and I passed the first time. This is much more helpful than the bigger PE study guides that only have short sections on Surveying. This book is still small and has an easy learning curve.I highly recommend this book to study for the PE.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the person in Engineering survey parctice.
This book is not the ultimate reference for the preperation for the California section of the PE exam. Study material provided by other sources like "PES" from Freson California, have served me better since I am not in the practice of Engineering Survey. I have no doubt that the author is a professional, yet the delivery is some how complicated for some of the topics, specially the DMD, and error of closure. The coverage of the Engineer's Act and Surveyors Act are also limited compared to other resources. Inclduing "Como",I have obtained study material from 4 reputable sources, but this reference was not the one that I had to depend on taking the statetest. This is my personal input.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review book for California Engineering Surveying Section exam
I took the California special seismic/survey exam fall 2008, and used this book as the sole source for preparing for the surveying exam and as the only reference for the open book surveying exam. This book was great in preparing me for the exam, there was nothing on the exam that wasn't covered by this book. The content and the example problems do a wonderful job in relearning or refreshing you to surveying, even if it has been several years.I haven't received my results yet so I am not a 100% sure if I passed, however I am confident that I did well on the survey exam because of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Passing the CA PE Surveying
Don't believe the old reviews previously posted. They are for the old version. This resource is perfect for the CA PE Surveying exam.I was surprised at how closely the problems matched up.The California Acts and things like that were key, as there is limited resources to find that information.Obviously, not all the information in this book was useful, but the horizontal, vertical curves, leveling, photogrammetry, and parcel map sections were clutch.I would recommend that anyone taking this test buy it.Work through it and feel confident for the test.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Review Text
Having recently taken the PE, I found this to be quite a useful reference for the principles of surveying (together with the surveying textbook by Kavanagh). The major topics are covered in this text, and as long as the test taker using other reference materials to go more in depth, there should be no problem. However, I could have been lucky this time around and your mileage may vary (most of my colleagues have had problems with the surveying portion of the PE).

Word of warning for future PE exam takers:NCEES and the state board do not allow loose or stapled sheets during the exam, and during the October 2007 exam, this book (and other similar reference materials) was disallowed as it is stapled.People who had inserted it into 3-ring binders didn't have a problem. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Engineer
This book seems to contain plenty of updated information gathered from many good resources. With the exeption of the very many typos, this book is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Different point of view
This book covers most of the fundamental knowledge of transportation engineering. The example is straight forward. You might need to adapt it for the real practise. In the descriptive topic, author has his style/vocab. of writing which is quite tough at the begining to understand but his ideas is interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good book
This is a good book covering the fundamentals of Transportation Engineering. There are a bunch of typos which irritate a bit, otherwise the book is okay.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book.
Don't buy this book.It is awful. It is not based on sound engineering principles, but based upon lies. Please do not buy it, I beg of you. ... Read more

Product Description

Materials for Civil and Construction Engineers, 3/e is ideal for courses in Civil Engineering Materials, Construction Materials, and Construction Methods and Materials offered in Civil, Environmental, or Construction engineering departments.

This introduction gives students a basic understanding of the material selection process and the behavior of materials — a fundamental requirement for all civil and construction engineers performing design, construction, and maintenance. The authors cover the various materials used by civil and construction engineers in one useful reference, limiting the vast amount of information available to the introductory level, concentrating on current practices, and extracting information that is relevant to the general education of civil and construction engineers. A large number of experiments, figures, sample problems, test methods, and homework problems gives students opportunity for practice and review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Civil Engineering Materials
Though it has a lot of valuable information, this book was a little less descriptive and harder to follow along.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for solid knowledge without much flare
I used this book in class. It isn't the most modern-looking or modern-feeling book by any means. However, the information is provided in a straight forward and simple way. There isn't too much unnecessary elaboration like many other textbook authors try to do to prove their credentials to the reader. At a personal level, I personally found the book really interesting. The information presented here was different than the average engineering book. This was a more of a guideline for design and explanation for why things the way they are - not a list of equations that you blindly follow. The examples are worked out clearly and everything seems to make sense right away. The book is relatively basic (at least my understanding of what basic is) but not boring. Good for people that want to understand whats going on. Its also not too math involved. As I said before, the different sections tend to outline the basics of a topic (concrete for example) and then the author goes step by step explaining how to design a mix for a specific purpose and how every property you choose will affect the outcome. Chances are you don't have a choice in whether to buy the book or not since its for a class, but if not, for what its worth, I recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good for beginers
I liked the subjects covered for beginers but more in depth and solutions are needed for future civil engineers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read.
This book was easy to read and follow along with. The information is mostly well laid out and the example problems are ok, could use more.Biggest downside was that the answers were not in the text.

Product Description
Throughout the world, and even in the United States, engineers are tackling the challenges of sustainable development and public health - challenges that engineers are uniquely qualified to address. Yet engineers working abroad on development projects often lack the knowledge and information to design, plan, construct, operate, and maintain technology that is culturally, economically, and geographically appropriate - technology that takes into account gender, does not use significant amounts of fossil fuels, accounts for environmental conditions like water scarcity, and uses local construction materials. This readable and fully illustrated guide is a complete handbook for international engineering service projects that involve water supply and treatment, watersheds, sanitation systems, and indoor air quality. It provides the tools necessary to implement the right technology in developing regions around the world. The authors introduce sustainable engineering and explain how environmental engineering fosters public health, with an emphasis on the relationship between community participation and the success of an engineering project. In addition, this book covers topographical surveying, project planning, watershed management, and construction materials and techniques. Specific technical guidance is offered for the design and construction of multiple systems for water supply, water and wastewater treatment, and flood storage and drainage, as well as solid waste management and indoor air quality improvement. This book is a valuable resource for engineering students, faculty, and practitioners involved with programs like Engineers without Borders, Water for People, and Engineers for a Sustainable World, as well as those affiliated with government groups, international agencies, and charitable organizations. ... Product Description
Although initially based purely on environmental principles of reuse and recycling, natural waste treatment systems proved to have economic advantages over mechanical systems in many cases, being less expensive to build and operate as well as requiring less energy. Thus, natural waste treatment methods reemerged even as advanced wastewater treatment technologies exploded in growth. Reflecting this burgeoning popularity, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is the first book to integrate all the major types of natural treatment systems into a single source.

Beginning with an overview of the types of natural treatment systems, the book outlines the planning, feasibility assessment, and site selection processes unique to natural processes as well as the basic process responses and interactions governing natural systems. The authors then examine the systems in detail, discussing wastewater pond systems, free water surface constructed wetlands, subsurface and vertical flow constructed wetlands, land treatment, sludge management, and onsite wastewater systems. They illustrate the practical aspects through 30 examples; include 178 data tables for comparing costs, performance, and constraints; and describe new approaches to partially mixed ponds, including dual-powered aeration ponds.

Written by eminent experts in natural waste treatment, Natural Wastewater Treatment Systems is an invaluable tool for selecting, planning, and implementing ecologically and economically sound wastewater treatment systems. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars passing the torch
I have been a consulting engineer for over 20 years now, and this book has a lot to offer. It sits on the top shelf of my bookcase when I need simple answers fast. The original edition of this book was essentially a summarization of design manuals published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the late 1970's and early 1980's.If you are old enough to have these original "purple manuals" on your shelf (and actually use them), then you probably don't need this book.

But the reality in the environmental engineering field is that most of the "old guard" who worked in the Construction Grants and Superfund program are at, or close, to retirement. If you are part of the new generation entering the field, this is a great book as it essentially encapsulates 4 of the old EPA manuals, plus you get the benefit of the extensive career experience of the authors.

This book did not get 5 stars in my review because most of the data analysis is from the late 1980's and early 1990's, and there are a lot empirical equations drawn from this old (and limited) data set. Most of the observations on "new" technology developments are in the literature review sections and the design equations have not necessarily been updated to reflect new research findings.Since 90% of the data on natural treatment systems has been published in the last 10 years, readers should be aware that assumptions behind old equation sets are limited and need to treated critically.

If you have an interest in natural wastewater treatment systems, this is a good starting point for the environmental engineer and a great overview manual for other practitioners in the field. If you want to specialize at a graduate-school level in a particular technology like constructed wetlands or pond systems, then you will have to dig deeper to find the cutting edge in more specialized books and the research journal literature. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very thorough review
I bought this book over some of the other civil review books because it looked longer and all of the other books had complaints about them. However, now I wish I had ignored those complaints and bought one of the others, because it would be hard for them to be any worse than this book.I would not recommend this as a good review. All of the review topics are VERY brief, most consisting of only a paragraph, if there is any review at all.It is basically a book of sample problems.Granted, the sample problems and explanations definitely help, but the problems all seemed rather simple and I'm worried that the exam questions may be more difficult. Also, there are topics on the civil EIT that are not covered at ALL in this book. The three major topics that are not covered are surveying, computers/numerical methods, and contracts/construction.All of these topics have 6 problems on the exam, just as much as geotech, hydraulics, or transportation!Water treatment was also not covered, unless you consider the environmental engineering chapter to cover it.I don't understand how they could publish an "effective review" book without covering 4 out of the 10 topics on the exam. The only redeeming quality to this review text is that it gives you a sample civil examination, but overall you'll be better off with Lindeburg's book.

THIS IS IN ADDITION TO MY PREVIOUS REVIEW GIVEN ABOVE:
I am now writing after actually having TAKEN the EIT exam.My thoughts on this book are even worse than before. My new MAJOR complaint is that the example problems in this review book are MUCH, MUCH EASIER than the actual problems on the EIT exam.I did pretty well on the sample exam in this book, because the problems were all really basic, but the actual exam question were all a level or two HARDER.You'd think a good test prep book would be the other way around.DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Please AVOID at all cost
I completely agree with the other 1 star reviews, this book is just terrible. The key problems are:

1.It's not representative of the PE.The first thing you should do prior to taking the PE is looking on the NCEES website and find out what they expect you to know. The 2009 version of the morning exam includes determinate structures, footing, beams and slabs, steel and maybe reinforced concrete. So when you get to the mansonry problem in this book and freak out, don't, NCEES does NOT expect you to know it.(Also, the solution is completely and utterly wrong.)

2.ASD vs. LRFD, there are quiet a few steel problems down with ASD.First off, it's 2009, who the heck uses ASD for steel.Second, the problem statement doesn't say "use ASD" so you end up solving the problem in LRFD and then looking at the solution and going, well, okay, that's not helpful. Also, the exam provides answer choices in both ASD and LRFD (but once again, who uses ASD?)

3.The problems are just odd - a built-up glulam column, torsion of reinforced concrete columns, really. No, I don't think so.

I just took the PE and I got to say, never once was I like, hey, I did a similar problem from the 6 minute solution book.I really wish this book was better, especially since there really are not that many books out there for PE prep, but even if this is the only book, I still don't recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT USE IF YOU STUDY LRFD
This book still uses ASD for steel design, it has not been updated for LRFD design, and such you get different answers for the steel questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars The content has NOTHING to do with PE Exam.
The problems are not really 6 minutes problems. Many problems are asked in only ASD style and only answered in ASD. The questions are much more different than PE exam. When I was solving the problems I felt these are different that other PE samples I solved. And it was totally different that the PE exam that I took. I chose structural for the afternoon and it has nothing to do with this book. Waste of my time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Review Book
This is a very good book for PE exam. The style and difficulty of problems are very close to the real exam. I took PE recently, one of the problems is exactly same. I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Engineering Multi-Perspective Guide
I really like the approach used in this textbook which encourages to become involved in learning the principles of engineering remediation at many levels. The multi-level approach and different perspectives are presented in clear language and detailed explanations are provided. In addition, it is successful in analyzing and designing remediation and have found myself referring back to this book. For these reasons, I bought this textbook and would highly suggest it as a source for anyone studying engineering remediation and technologies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors errors errors!
TONS of errors! Not only in the material but all across the practice problems. Every class, the professor hands out a sheet to highlight the errors in the reading/assignment. 1-0 out of 5 stars Quite worthless
Why this book is not worth buying:

1.) The equations in the book does not match up with the equations used in the FE Supplied Reference book provided by NCEES during the FE exam so it's frustrating to study two sets of equations (with different units) for the same material. It's
inconvenient and time consuming.

2.) Each chapter has a tiny review section that supplies equations and a few examples (if examples are provided) then users can try the practice problems at the end.The problem is that the review is VERY basic and hardly skims the surface of the subject matter therefore it is not enough for a thorough review of the subject. This means, I have to grab out my old textbooks and look up each topic and review from them if I still own the textbook.

3.) Not as organized when compared to the FE Review Manual from Lindeburg (I use the FE Review Manual to study for the morning portion of the FE).

All and all, not worth buying.

I felt this book was a good review for the CE portion of the FE exam.It would be a little thicker with more sample problems, but for the size it was great.I passed, so I can't complain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Recommended if you are looking for real help
Feels like a slapped together attempt to make some money. No survey review. Most of the reviews are very confusing. The hydrology review is just a couple questions with manning's and Hazen equations. The review questions don't have real explained solutions.Don't waste time with this book, find something else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quite useless
It discusses indetail obvious stuff, and then references you to textbooks for more advanced topics. So it is more of a basic reference for the things you practice everyday, than a way to help you remember the topics you did during your undergrad degree

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay
This book is okay. It's not very in-depth.I would pay the extra money and get a more thorough study guide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective
This book is easy to get through and explains the equations that you need well. I'm using it for a class right now, but it is a great intro book for environmental engineering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
The book was very good, looked like new, even though it said there were marks, there seemed like there wasn't any.It came at a reasonably good time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just as promised, thanks
the book arrived when and how they said it would in the condition they promised. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for those who don't focus on environment, but need to learn about it
Generic and simple. I took a required class in basic environmental engineering and was pretty happy with this book. It's simple to use and does not assume and prior knowledge of environmental engineering besides common sense. Everything is explained well and without indulging into the never ending and unnecessary details as a lot of text books do. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author wasn't trying to push an agenda (something I thought came standard with any book dealing with the environment). All of the information was objective and discussed from a neutral "know what it is, and what it does, and why" perspective. The chapter about global warming actually almost seemed to downplay the artificial and hyped up urgency and extent of the issue by focusing on only on the numbers and nothing else. Not math intensive at all except maybe a few rates of growth/decay. Solid intro course book. However if you're not interested in the subject to begin with, this book won't change that.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for class
Very useful book.My teacher used it a lot and the examples are really helpful. ... Read more
