3-0 out of 5 stars This not an update of the 4th edition
This 5th edition is not exactly for the same users of the 4th edition. While it clearly reads in the publisher note on the back cover that the scope of this book includes aerospace engineering, it DOES NOT ANYMORE. This 5th edition has unfairly deleted the Aeronautics and Astronautics chapters. Furthermore is has reduced tremendously the Automatic Control chapters into one useless basic control chapter.

I do not understand the new editor's view of this strategy, but I am glad I still have my 4th edition copy. I will surely return the 5th edition copy because it is useless for aerospace engineers compared to the 4th edition oneEshbach's Handbook of Engineering Fundamentals, 4th Edition. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Engineering
A really good subject. A lot of math speak and a few errors in the text and formulas, could use a few solutions to the problems.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor book for students
This book does an OK job up to about the 5th chapter. After that point, the exercises at the end of each chapter get considerably more difficult.Up until that point, the assignable problems and the sample problems in each chapter are very similar in terms of difficulty.Once chapter 5 begins, the sample problems in the text are completely useless as for deriving the differential equations necessary to solve the assignable problems. The only sample problems given in chapter 5 and beyond are real simple "plug and chug" type examples compared to the difficult problems at the end of the chapters. It's like showing someone how 2x4s can be nailed together and then asking someone to build a skyscraper. No fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars On time, good condition
I was very glad not to have to miss any homework assignments; the book arrived on time and in pristine condition.Thank you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Student opinion of the book
I used this book in a junior level course, the 2nd class I took in nuclear engineering, and it is at best hit-or-miss. Concepts are mostly discussed clearly and comprehensively, most topics relevant to fission reactors are included in the book, with a strong emphasis on reactor physics and neutron & quantum physics(~65% of the book), though the section on quantum mechanics is superficial. Thermal-hydraulics, fuel reprocessing, isotope separation, radiation shielding and reactor safety/licensing/accidents also appear, including a brief discussion of non-American reactor designs. Health physics & fusion get almost no text. The formulas are riddled with typos-missing minus signs, exponents, etc., which make it hard to use as a reference book since the publisher hasn't published a list of corrections-my professor actually warned us against using formulas straight out of the book! Constants necessary to solve a problem sometimes won't appear anywhere in the book, and the reference tables in the back are only in English units, even though the book uses English & SI units in problems and mostly SI in examples-and there's no good reason to use English units in an engineering textbook. period. The book assumes mathematics through calculus III and Differential Equations, and the appendices do a bad job of explaining relevant topics in those areas. The only reason to buy this book is because no other book covers such a variety of topics in the field. Hamilton's Nuclear Reactor Analysis & Kazimi's Nuclear Systems vol.1 do a much better job at discussing reactor physics & thermal-hydraulics than this book, respectively, even though they are more expensive.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nuclear Engineering
For a book that is supposed to be an intro to nuclear engineering, it is very vague.
The questions in the homework are difficult to answer if the book is the only source we are using as a reference.

There are several typos through out the book.

Amazon was super fast delivering the book though...great service. ... Read more

Product Description
Most chemical reactions in industry and biology are catalytic and play a role at some stage of the processing of about 800f the goods manufactured in the U.S., yet catalysis is a neglected subject in chemical education. The fragmentary treatment accorded the topic until now is integrated. It covers, in a unified way, catalysis in solutions, by enzymes, in synthetic polymers within the molecular scale cages of zeolites and other molecular sieves, and on surfaces of inorganic solids. The central ideas are chemical; principles are illustrated by emphasizing industrial reactions and catalysts. ... Read more

Product Description
Phase Equilibria in Chemical Engineering covers the practical aspects and
the thermodynamic basis of equilibria between gases, liquids, and solids. The importance of, and and interest in these topics over decades has resulted in the development of many different correlations and methods of comparable worth. The author draws upon his many years of experience in evaluating and comparing these alternatives.

Professor Walas details the historical background, but focuses on current
knowledge for the evaluation of equilibria between gaseous, liquid, and solid phases, and on the chemical engineering processes that involve such phenomena.Knowledge of the amounts and composition of phases that result when processes of transformation stabilize is essential for proper equipment design. To this end, emphasis is placed on finding the
numerical results necessary for the design of equipment handling several phases, or the interpretation of such equipment's performance. Therefore, most important points are illustrated through solved numerical examples, as well as problems designed for solution by the reader. And, in addition to numerous computer programs written in BASIC, there are over 800 references to literature, which facilitate pursuit of any topic in further detail.

Covers the practical aspects and thermodynamic equilibria between the phases.
Compares the different correlations and methods in the field today.
Contains numerous examples, illustrations, and references. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get it from your library & use it! But it's too old to buy!
If you are a graduate (or higher) working in this field, then all you will need is a 100% complete reference, and not a textbook. Texts are for learners, and refs are for workers. Then the best and only book you will need is Stanley M. Walas's. A thick volume, not a tome!, full of diagrams, formulas, charts, and more charts, formulas and diagrams. The book text tells you 'How-to-do-it' and shows you how it is done: great, advanced calculation examples. Despite its age, (c)1985, the book layout is still attractive and follows the example of other ChemE reference titles (books published by Marcel Dekker, CRC Press, or encyclopediae, etc.) in a 'two columns per page'-style. Since this is a reference book (and not a monograph!), you probably wont need to buy it. Having a library copy on your shelf is 'a must' but also absolutely sufficient. Unless you are a librarian or you spot a super deal on a second-hand copy, I do *not* recommend to buy it (*Who* enjoys spending much money on old books, anyway??). Use it, yes!, but do not buy it! Indeed this is the very best ref on phase equilibria and chemical (engineering) thermodynamics, but since i do not recommend it to buy (because of its age), i will give it 4 stars only. *If* Professor Walas decided to publish a Second Edition, I would rate this book 5 stars and a "Strong Buy"!
Please also read my pos reviews of thermo books by Noel de Nevers 2002 and Stanley I. Sandler 1999. See also my neg review of thermo book by Smith/VanNess/Abbott 2001. For a complete listing of relevant thermo titles have a look at table 8-1, pages 8.2-8.4, in Poling/Prausnitz/O'Connell 5th ed. c2001.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.
After some rather shaky thermodynamics courses at college, I suddenly found myself confronted with real life problems in the
area of phase equilibria at high pressures. I found in this book everything I needed to get started. This book is oriented
towards practical calculations and does a very good job at
describing the different approaches and techniques used in the
field.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best book in the subject.
This book has all the chemical enginneer needs to know about phase equilibria. The diagrams has real good quility and the way of explaining it's real good.

I can assure that it's one of the basic books that achemical engineer has to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars This text is an excellent presentation of phase equilibria.
This text presents the topics of equations of state, activity coefficients, phase diagrams and thermodynamic functions pertinent to the understanding and calculation of phase equilibria in chemical engineering application. Vapor-liquid, liquid-liquid, ans solid liquid equilibria are all presentd. The book presents many example calculations using real data that are very usefull. ... Read more

Product Description
Chemistry in the hands of Engineers! This mantra, initiated and developed largely in the research programs of academic chemical engineers over the last few decades, has now made its way into the core undergraduate curriculum in the form of a new Chemical Reaction Engineering textbook by Cal Tech's Mark E. Davis and U VA's Robert J. Davis… -Michael T. Klein, Rutgers University

This book is an introduction to the quantitative treatment of chemical reaction engineering. It is appropriate for a one-semester undergraduate (or first-year graduate)course. The text provides a balanced approach: first, it covers both homogeneous and heterogeneous reacting systems; second, it covers both chemical reaction engineering and chemical reactor engineering.

Here's what reviewers have to say:

The Davis/Davis book really brings out the strong coupling between chemical reactions and reactor design concepts in a pedagogical fashion.-Michael S. Wong, Rice University

Great use of chemical reactions as teaching examples -Michael S. Wong, Rice University

The examples, illustrations, and vignettes given in the text are very well done, and are of either fundamental or practical interest.-David F. Cox, Virginia Tech

A primary motivation to use this text is the arrangement of the introductory material on kinetics. The initial description of reactions and kinetics in Davis/Davis appears prior to the introduction of reactor material balances. -David F. Cox, Virginia Tech

Concise development and discussion of material-Michael S. Wong, Rice University ... Read more
