5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect description
The book was exactly as it was described. It was shipped promptly and arrived in time for classes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a math text for ChemE's!
This is an excellent and focused book for graduate ChemE's.Lots of the problems are the types you would see in graduate transport and controls courses.Everything is written with ChemE problems in mind. It's not like other textbooks, like Kreyzig's, that simply put out a bunch of generic problems to solve; still, Kreyzig's textbook is an engineering math classic, and you should have it on-hand in case you need some extra explanations. It is certainly better than the text of Varma and Morbidelli, which tends to move off-topic quickly and answer several unnecessary problems.

This text by Rice and Do is the best I've seen, but it is really hard to get a hold of.Good luck getting it, as it is certainly a good investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book ...for Process Modeling Engineers
This is an excellent book that talks about various mathematical tools and its applications for Process Modeling. This start with the very basic funamentals and finishes at the highest level. This is a rare book that describes the theorotical fundamentals of mathematical Derivations in Chemical Engineering unlike other books that majorly contain Numerical Methods ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents the current carbonaceous fuel conversion technologies based on chemical looping concepts in the context of traditional or conventional technologies. The key features of the chemical looping processes, their ability to generate a sequestration-ready CO2 stream, are thoroughly discussed. Chapter 2 is devoted entirely to the performance of particles in chemical looping technology and covers the subjects of solid particle design, synthesis, properties, and reactive characteristics. The looping processes can be applied for combustion and/or gasification of carbon-based material such as coal, natural gas, petroleum coke, and biomass directly or indirectly for steam, syngas, hydrogen, chemicals, electricity, and liquid fuels production. Details of the energy conversion efficiency and the economics of these looping processes for combustion and gasification applications in contrast to those of the conventional processes are given in Chapters 3, 4, and 5.Finally, Chapter 6 presents additional chemical looping applications that are potentially beneficial, including those  for H2 storage and onboard H2 production, CO2 capture in combustion flue gas, power generation using fuel cell, steam-methane reforming, tar sand digestion, and chemicals and  liquid fuel production.

A CD is appended to this book that contains the chemical looping simulation files and the simulation results based on the ASPEN Plus software for such reactors as gasifier, reducer, oxidizer and combustor, and for such processes as conventional gasification processes, Syngas Chemical Looping Process, Calcium Looping Process, and Carbonation-Calcination Reaction (CCR) Process.

Product Description
Designed for the non-expert student, enthusiast, or researcher, this text provides an accessible introduction to numerical computation and its applications in science and engineering. It assumes no prior knowledge beyond undergraduate calculus and elementary computer programming. Fundamental and practical issues are discussed in a unified manner with a generous, but not excessive, dose of numerical analysis. Topics are introduced on a need to know basis to concisely illustrate the practical implementation of a variety of algorithms and demystify seemingly esoteric numerical methods. Algorithms that can be explained without too much elaboration and can be implemented within a few dozen lines of computer code are discussed in detail, and computer programs in Fortran, C++, and Matlab are provided. Algorithms whose underlying theories require long, elaborate explanations are discussed at the level of first principles, and references for further information are given. The book uses numerous schematic illustrations to demonstrate concepts and facilitate their understanding by providing readers with a helpful interplay between ideas and visual images. Real-world examples drawn from various branches of science and engineering are presented. Updated information on computer technology and numerical methods is included, many new and some original topics are introduced. Additional solved and unsolved problems are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a useful reference
I used this reference recently to help me with a research project and found the organization of the sections on numerical solutions to differential equations to be very helpful. The book is very well organized, and presented the material in a suggestive way, so that I was able to use it in developing some ideas concerning the theoretical aspects of computation.I think that any reference which leads one to develop new theoretical insights must be recommended, but it appears also to be very well organized for ordinary practical purposes as well.I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book on numerical methods
This is an extremely useful and well-written book. It is perfectly organized and very well structured. The level is just right; not too simple and not too tough. The software is a big bonus. Everything I have needed on numerics I have found in this book. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the fourth edition of an established textbook of chemical thermodynamics used by university and technical college students of chemistry and chemical engineering. The text covers the same ground as previous editions, presenting the general theory of chemical equilibrium, including its statistical development, and illustrating its many applications in the laboratory and industry. This edition has been extensively revised in the light of recent contributions to the literature. Many new references have been added; the re-writing of certain passages, especially of those concerning the statistical interpretation of entropy and the present understanding of order-disorder transitions, also reflects changes of emphasis. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK book
This book is very wordy. Often, there are only 1 or 2 at the most examples per chapter, but most of it narrative. Additional books are requred in order to solve numerical problems.

3-0 out of 5 stars good for graduate level, but otherwise...
This is not a book for beginners. While the subject is covered thouroughly, there are virtually no examples on the usage of the equations and formulas.Perhaps I simply had a poor teacher but I feel that this book was written with the intention of being used as a reference book for graduate level students.I would recommend any undergrad assigned this book for class try to find a supplementary book from which examples and problems may be worked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid and consistent
This book is by far the best book, in my view, on the subject of chemical thermodynamics. The author covered both the classical and statistical aspects of the subject, and did it with such lucidity and consistency as rarely seen in books dealing with similar topics. Unlike many other text books which are primarily consisted of formulas and sample calculations, the author put in a lot of expositional materials that made each section very readable in itself and well connected with other sections. The author also didn't shy away from the necessary mathematics by providing the needed materials for all the derivations. The most outstanding feature of the book, however, would be the consistency and continuity in the materials covered, the explanations provided, the mathematics employed, and the simbols used. The only shortcoming of the book, however, seemed to be too digressional and wordy at times. But if you are prepared for these and ready to read a master upclose, you will be in for a pleasant surprize. ... Read more

Product Description
James House's revised Principles of Chemical Kinetics provides a clear and logical description of chemical kinetics in a manner unlike any other book of its kind. Clearly written with detailed derivations, the text allows students to move rapidly from theoretical concepts of rates of reaction to concrete applications.
Unlike other texts, House presents a balanced treatment of kinetic reactions in gas, solution, and solid states. The entire text has been revised and includes many new sections and an additional chapter on applications of kinetics. The topics covered include quantitative relationships between molecular structure and chemical activity, organic/inorganic chemistry, biochemical kinetics, surface kinetics and reaction mechanisms. Chapters also include new problems, with answers to selected questions, to test the reader's understanding of each area. A solutions manual with answers to all questions is available for instructors.
A useful text for both students and interested readers alike, Dr. House has once again written a comprehensive text simply explaining an otherwise complicated subject.

* Provides an introduction to all the major areas of kinetics and demonstrates the use of these concepts in real life applications
* Detailed derivations of formula are shown to help students with a limited background in mathematics
* Presents a balanced treatment of kinetics of reactions in gas phase, solutions and solids
* Solutions manual available for instructors ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A simplified tome of errors, omissions, and inconsistencies.
This book is at an extremely low level, unacceptable for a graduate text.Graduate level concepts, like partition functions and phase-space, are given mention but not developed at all.Even worse often such concepts are given a couple of pages of fluffy introductory discussion before the reader realizes that the author isn't really headed anywhere and the concept will never be used again in the text.

Even worse, many of the derivations that are presented leave the reader puzzled at why the author seems to selectively and inconsistently applying concepts.Part of the answer may be that the book also contains a sizable number of typographical errors, several of which were found in the problems during the course, usually after hours of puzzling over seemingly insolvable problems.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who understands the following would be better off moving on to a proper text.

1) When things are in dynamic equilibrium, their forward and backward rates are equivalent.

2) Rate constants in chemical reactions are usually governed by Arrhenius relationships.

3) First order linear differential equations can be solved using integrating factors.

4) When some things happen really fast and other things happen really slow, you can simplify by assuming that the really fast things are in equilibrium all the time.See 3 if this makes things linear and first order, otherwise iterate (this assumption or the equation... you pick).

If you don't understand these things, ponder the question: "Why am I taking a graduate class on Chemical Kinetics?"

3-0 out of 5 stars A ton of better references out there....
My kinetics professor primarily used this as the main textbook for the course because of the price; it was affordable for starving graduate students and contained practice problems. However, I think the saying "You get what you pay for" really stands out in this case.Normally you see Chemistry or Materials Science textbooks costing at least $60-$100 dollars, but this guy only costs $36 here on Amazon. Mixed blessing, obviously....

This book has an unacceptable amount of errors (for a 2nd Edition!!), especially in the beginning chapters when it is crucial for the student/reader to understand fundamental concepts. It does a good job of going through mathematical steps when deriving something, but often times the initial concepts it uses for the derivation are flawed and not consistent with previous information given. There are also a lot of relatively minor errors in the practice problems that I am just astounded did not get caught during editing.Overall I would definitely not recommend this book on its own to learn Kinetics; you must use this book in conjunction with more reliable references at the library (to save money!) to really get a good grasp of the concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars This text is a wonderful introduction to chemical kinetics.
This text provides a clear and logical description of chemical kinetics. This book presents this somewhat complicated subject in a manner that is unlike any other book of its kind. The structure and content of this book will appeal to anybody interested in the study of chemical kinetics, no matter how much knowledge of this topic they may have.Excellently written and is a "must have" for those interested in this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clearly written, balanced treatment of chemical kinetics
Unlike most books on chemical kinetics, this text presents a balanced treatment of kinetics of reactions in gas phase, solutions and solids.A chapter on enzyme kinetics in included as well.A readable book that is ideal for self-teaching.Clearly written with details of derivations shown. ... Product Description
Designed for undergraduates, graduate students, and industry practitioners, Bioseparations Science and Engineering fills a critical need in the field. Current, comprehensive, and concise, it covers bioseparations unit operations in greater depth than other texts on this topic. In each of the chapters, the authors use a consistent method of explaining unit operations, starting with a qualitative description noting the significance and general application of the unit operation. They then illustrate the scientific application of the operation, develop the required mathematical theory, and finally, describe the applications of the theory in engineering practice, with an emphasis on design and scaleup. Unique to this text is a chapter dedicated to bioseparations process design and economics, in which a process simular, SuperPro DesignerRG is used to analyze and evaluate the production of three important biological products. Other unique features include basic information about bioproducts and engineering analysis and a chapter with bioseparations laboratory exercises. 4-0 out of 5 stars Well written for a text book!
I am taking an Intro to Ceramics course; this is the book we use. The book is actually really interesting. The author sometimes even sounds tongue-in-cheek about things! The subject matter ranges over a wide array of manufacturing processes, quality assurance, and material properties. He also throws in a lot of information about phase diagrams and grain structure/growth. I myself am not a materials engineer, but I found the book engrossing (very strange for me!). I did the study guide questions, which I thought were very well written, and the questions at the end of the text.

Two drawbacks only: 1) no answers to the study guide questions/back of the chapter questions, and 2) all the pictures are in black and white.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Ceramic Engineering
This book is definetely one of the best in Ceramic Science and Engineering. It serves the very best the interest of students, academics and profecionals from a vast variety of disciplines who is working or starts working or somehow has an interest with ceramic materials. It initiates with the very basics from atomic bonding and crystalline structures, and then proceeds with processing, materials properties and performances, service life predictions, and failure analysis and mechanisms in an interconnected manner. The language is simple to follow, and the case studies are very well selected to fully understand the applications of each individual matters examined in the respective chapters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Richerson knows a lot about ceramics
This is a pretty good introductory book to Ceramics. There are a few typos in this 3rd edition book, but that doesn't distract from the main flow of it all. There are Review questions at the end of each chapter which are supposed to help one think about what s/he just read.Sometimes, the answer doesn't really come until the next chapter, though. The Author has a good voice in his writing--it's not totally technical jargon. So overall, good book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read, informative, comprehendible.
The book is very easy reading. It has a good format and seems to have some good information. Good examples of analysis methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great textbook
System Safety Engineering And Risk Assessment is an excellent reference on how to engineer safety and manage risk. The clarity of the writing combined with understandable examples makes this book an outstanding text for a course on engineering safe systems.

This book starts by introducing the need and benefits of implementing a system safety program providing context for the later material.Key safety concepts and definitions are then introduced with references to relevant government and industry standards. A pragmatic discussion follows on the necessity of management and organizational support for an effective safety program. The book then details specific techniques for hazard identification and analysis including HAZOP, fault tree, FMEA, FMECA and a few lesser known methodologies. The overview of human factors analysis begins with the observation that "human error is an out-of-tolerance action within the human machine system."This discussion provides a comprehensive framework for the more advanced material referenced in the section. The only weakness was the following section on software safety, which lacked detailed descriptions of state-of-practice analysis techniques. The analysis section is strengthened by the discussion of accident and failure reporting systems and the associated databases that are used to support accident and reliability analyses. The final chapters of the book provide a practical discussion of how to manage risk using tailored versions the various techniques introduced in the previous sections.

All in all, this is a worthwhile reference for systems engineers and safety officials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating Systems Safety Overview
In this book, Nicholas Bahr has taken the complex discipline of systems safety and made it accessible in a logical, useful format. The book is clear and well illustrated (although a couple of the charts are a bit cumbersome and unwieldy), and calls upon numerous case studies to illustrate key points. There are separate chapters of Hazard Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Safety Analysis in Engineering, and Safety Management.

While useful for engineers (particularly in the chemical processing or nuclear fields), this book is written in comprehensible terms that do not require an engineering background or technical education to understand. In fact, I believe that the biggest beneficiaries of this book are not engineers at all, but non-technical managers, who desperately need to understand safety systems, but often don't. In fact the chapter on Safety Management should be required reading for any manager in a safety critical environment, as it is an excellent "how to" guide to safety management of complex systems. This chapter has examples of correct safety management, and more importantly, excellent examples of the perils of management unwillingness to prioritize safety. The case study of the Nypro UK cyclohexane plant explosion in Flixborough, England is the best detailed, and has universal applications to safety systems across varying industries. The loss of the shuttle 'Challenger' is also reviewed from a systems safety vantage point, but while there are many errors to be analyzed and learned from there, more of the lessons are industry specific than are the lessons from the Flixborough example.

I used this book in a graduate class on systems safety. This is one of the best safety books I have seen, and is the most concise text on systems safety that I have ever read, far better, for instance, than the works of Perrow. Mr. Bahr is to be commended for his work; I look forward to reading more by him in the future.

The problems at end of chapters are very difficult and the book does not offer any help to solving them, nor is there a solutions manual available. It could be that my teacher is terrible but with most of my chemical engineering books I teach myself. However this book offers no help.Id recommend getting another kinetics book to go along with this so you can actually learn the material

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Roberts is DaMan
Finally Dr Roberts published his book. This has been a course pack at NC State for several years and was the greatest thing since sliced bread. This version is much easier to tote around, unfortunately it is also much more expensive.Still I am very happy to own one.I learned alot from this text.Topics are laid out well and explained well so that everyone can understand. You cant go wrong with this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Great book covering chemical reaction engineering. It focuses mainly on kinetics of heterogeneous gas-solid type but contains some material about homogeneous reactions and ideal reactors with many industrial examples. However, I don't recomend it for beginners, only for advanced reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking
This book isn't very good. Lets face it, it is almost 20 years old. Way out of touch with today's computer programs. The references are ancient. I would consider this book only as an alternative to more modern text books.

1-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful mess
While this book does have it's good points You need a reference book to get anything of use from it. My professor disliked it so much that weswitched text. And occasionally did problems from Froment so he couldjustify assigning the text for graduate kinetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and most advanced book on reaction engineering
This book is very comprehensive and advanced level. It is the only book you will ever need on reaction engineering. It thoroughly explains chemical kinetics and steady-state and transient reactor operation. Itsuited both for undergraduate and graduate students, although the graduatestudent will grasp the subtleties of reactor modeling better. It isextensively referenced with relevant scientific literature and containsample current research on the topic. In comparison, Fogler's book will notserve you beyond your initial reaction engineering course and servesstrictly undergraduate food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book, good textbook for graduate course
This book presents an excellent amount of highquality information, it is the best reference book I have found for chemical reactor analysis and design. Using it as a textbook in Master or Ph.D. level courses must beaccompanied by good lectures, I used it when I took the graduate course in1995, our professor did very good lectures, and that was more than enoughto learn a lot and enjoy the topic. When comparing this book with Fogler'swe have to step down to another level of analysis, Fogler's book is theequivalent book for undergraduate level courses, it is a good reference forbasis and step by step learning, and for understanding the numbercrunching. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading
Please do not be mislead into thinking it is as comprehensive as the FE Review Manual - this book contains ONLY problems and solutions - NO THEORY.
I would not purchase this book if given the same opportunity.
Thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sure, why not?
This book has a lot of problems that cover almost all of the material; however, I was frustrated with it from time to time. Quite a few of the problems are not representative of the ones in the actual test.
For instance, most of the problems were grouped in a set of four or five questions about a situation, so an incorrect answer to one of the questions would affect your chances of getting the other ones right. In the real test, this is not the case; each question is a standalone.
Some of the solutions were unsuitable for testing conditions. They are more academic rather than practical. I came across a few solutions which resorted to the Newtonian numerical method for getting at the answer in four or five iterations! Who is going to do that during the exam? Nobody! The author should write the solutions in a way that gives the student tips on how to solve the problems quickly and accurately during the exam.
The authors should also familiarize themselves a bit more with the equations given in the NCEES handbook. I was very frustrated with a few problems where the author derived an equation from scratch. After spending quite a bit of time thinking about whether or not there'd be a more practical way to solve the problem, I realized that the equation I need is in the NCEES handbook already! This was wasted studying time.
Despite all that, I love that there are three practice afternoon exams in this book. Even though the roadblocks I mentioned above were frustrating, I had a good sense of what I needed to review for the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars A necessary
The product description fails to state that it only contains sample questions. I thought it was going to be like the general review book, which reviews and then some questions.
For the price it is, I feel slightly disappointed. However, I would not know how else to prepare for the test since there is such a wide range of materials to be tested. You have no other choice, if you intend to take the ChemE afternoon session.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bought it but didn't use it!
It had been almost two years since I graduated with my chemical engineering degree.I bought this book along with the general review book by the same publisher.I ended up spending all my review time with the general book and I even went with the general afternoon session because the test turned out to be pretty easy.Seriously folks, the general book is all you need.I'm no genius but the test was laughably easier than I thought it was going to be.The actual test was way easier than the practice tests!Don't get me wrong, you still need to study hard.Just study from the general book, do all the practice problems and tests, then prepare to rock!

5-0 out of 5 stars This product is good.
The only improvement I could suggest is the inclusion of more practice exams. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The most practical chemical engineering book ever!!!!
If you are a working chemical or process engineer this book is great to check how equipments are really built. If you are a student or a professor, you may not found it very helpful. It shows you for real how equipments are design with several constructive details.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming
Tons of information but nearly useless for the process design course that I am taking this semester. Avoid paying full price because it is like a big reference book

4-0 out of 5 stars This is Not Perry's
The book starts out with some refinery flow sheets for making 'grasoline' from 'californing' crude.Process control is simple enough. The next section on fluid flow uses non-standard equations which are overly complex. The same goes for heat transfer.Fair does a good job on distillation.Reaction engineering is completly omited from this text.

4-0 out of 5 stars The most practical chemical engineering reference book
For the working chemical process design engineer, this is the best reference I've come across. It tells you how to pick equipment and generally how to determine equipment sizes. As a design or procurement engineer you work with vendors to make final equipment selection, but this book gives you what you need to know before you start talking to the vendors. It bridges the gap between theory you can get from textbooks and detailed applications you can get from sales literature.I'm surprised this book hasn't caught on as a standard in the chemical engineering profession ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but needs a lot of work
I used this book for a Biochemical Engineering course in the Chemical Engineering department. The book covers a wide range of topics in the field, including a section at the end dealing with an economic analysis of various processes which I found quite useful. What the book is really lacking are worked out example problems - there are very few throughout. Also I would have liked solutions to the problems at the end of each chapter. Some of the coverage is very thin on a few topics, sometimes leaving derivations or other formulas unexplained, so I had to rely on the lectures to cover the topics more in depth. ... Product Description
Software tools are a great aid to process engineers, but too much dependence on such tools can often lead to inappropriate and suboptimal designs. Reliance on software is also a hindrance without a firm understanding of the principles underlying its operation, since users are still responsible for devising the design.

In Process Engineering and Design Using Visual Basic, Arun K. Datta provides a unique and versatile suite of programs along with simultaneous development of the underlying concepts, principles, and mathematics. Each chapter details the theory and techniques that provide the basis for design and engineering software and then showcases the development and utility of programs developed using the material outlined in the chapter. This all-inclusive guide works systematically from basic mathematics to fluid mechanics, separators, overpressure protection, and glycol dehydration, providing basic design guidelines based on international codes. Worked examples demonstrate the utility of each program, while the author also explains problems and limitations associated with the simulations.

After reading this book you will be able to immediately put these programs into action and have total confidence in the result, regardless of your level of experience. All nine programs are available on the companion CD-ROM, including a useful unit conversion tool. ... Read more
