Product Description
This book deals with various unique elements in the drug development process within chemical engineering science and pharmaceutical R&D. The book is intended to be used as a professional reference and potentially as a text book reference in pharmaceutical engineering and pharmaceutical sciences. Many of the experimental methods related to pharmaceutical process development are learned on the job. This book is intended to provide many of those important concepts that R&D Engineers and manufacturing Engineers should know and be familiar if they are going to be successful in the Pharmaceutical Industry. These include basic analytics for quantitation of reaction components– often skipped in ChE Reaction Engineering and kinetics books. In addition Chemical Engineering in the Pharmaceutical Industry introduces contemporary methods of data analysis for kinetic modeling and extends these concepts into Quality by Design strategies for regulatory filings. For the current professionals, in-silico process modeling tools that streamline experimental screening approaches is also new and presented here. Continuous flow processing, although mainstream for ChE, is unique in this context given the range of scales and the complex economics associated with transforming existing batch-plant capacity.

The book will be split into four distinct yet related parts. These parts will address the fundamentals of analytical techniques for engineers, thermodynamic modeling, and finally provides an appendix with common engineering tools and examples of their applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Real World Examples Beyond The A --> B Oversimplification
Among the reaction engineering texts, this one is the most practical with real-world examples found in the petroluem fuels, petrochemical, biochemical, environmental clean-up, explosions/combustions, and mass transfer applications. The author uses real chemical examples and not just "A goes to B" oversimplification. No reaction is "A goes to B" in the real world and the author knows that.

2-0 out of 5 stars not so great
I used this book in my reactions engineering class. It was full of mistakes even though it was the 5th printing. The only reason the book was even useable was because Schmidt was a professor at the school I took the class at so he could clear up the mistakes in the book. The sections on CSTRs and PFRs was acceptable but still filled with mistakes and unclear problems at the end.So if you don't go to the University of Minnesota I would not recommand this book due to all the errors.

1-0 out of 5 stars too much errata
Too many errors ! Move your attention to Fogler's

5-0 out of 5 stars Presents concepts in concise, easy to understand writing
This book is an excellent introduction to reaction kinetics, ideal reactor models, and related areas covered in kinetics courses in Chemical Engineering.

3-0 out of 5 stars Topic intro good, no real application to reactor analysis
The book introduces fundamental reactor analysis topics like material and energy balances for PFTR's and CSTR's. Problems at the end of each chapter focus on equations and concepts presented throught the chapter building onprevious concepts introduced in previous chapters. A few drawbacks are;numerous errors presented throughout sample and actual problems, attemptsto apply to real life reactor analysis fall short because assumptions madeto reduce mathematical detail are never realized in real world problems(although they allow for crude approximations), extensive reading leads toboredom. Used as supplement to solid lecturer, the book is valuable, wouldnot reccomend for reader trying to "self-teach" reactor analysis. ... Read more

Product Description

This survey presents the theoretical methods of chemical engineering for modeling and simulation of industrial processes. On this base it is possible to formulate correct experimental conditions and to understand rightly the experimental results. The book uses the mechanics of continuous media approach for modeling of the simple processes as hydrodynamic processes, mass and heat transfer processes. The theory of the scalar, vector and tensor fields permit to create the basic equations and boundary conditions. The problems of rheology, turbulence, turbulent diffusion and turbulent mass transfer are examined too.

The book incorporates a lot of fundamental knowledge, but it is assumed that the readers are familiar with the mathematics at engineering level and that they thought some special topics in usual university courses. It includes examples at the end of all chapters using the author’s investigations. Therefore, it is highly valuable for scientists as well as graduate and PhD students.

Product Description
Principles of Chemical Reactor Analysis and Design presents a new fundamental approach and methodology that overcome the deficiencies of the current method of teaching chemical reactor design. It provides engineering students and practitioners with the tools needed to handle contemporary industrial reactor operations, new design capabilities, and the framework for new economic-based optimization.
Features include:

- Reactor operations are described by dimensionless variables (in most cases, between -1 and 1) and dimensionless design equations.
- The design is formulated in terms of the smallest number of design equations and the least number of terms in each equation; hence, the most robust formulation.
Solutions of the design equations provide dimensionless operating curves (a new concept in CRE). These curves provide complete information on the progress of the chemical reactions, the formation (or depletion) of all individual species, and changes in temperature. Reactor sizing represents a "point" on these curves (similar to the way a "point" on dimensionless friction factor versus Reynolds number charts is used).
- Discusses new design capabilities for reactor configurations. ... Read more

*********Text available as of 2/20/2004!*********Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers, third edition retains the characteristics that made this introductory text a success in prior editions. It is still a book that emphasizes material and energy balances and maintains a practical orientation throughout. No more math is included than is required to understand the concepts presented. To meet the demands of today's market, the author has included many problems suitable for solution by computer. Two brand new chapters are included. The first, on mixing, augments the book's coverage of practical issues encountered in this field. The second, on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), shows students the connection between hand and computational fluid dynamics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for fluid mechanics
I bought the 1st ed. (1970) which suprisingly seems identical in much of the content to the 3rd (2004) as a suppliment to a truely horrible book. This book seems to elaborate on many topics, qualitative and quantitative, that either aren't covered or only "covered"in other books. Not sure why its "for Chemical Engineers" as much of the material seems to be general fluid mechanics applicable to many other fields.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good....
This book is bad.

In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way.It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.

Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!

N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

2-0 out of 5 stars it is too superficial book.
Now , I study fluid mechanics twice. First time , I didn't know , superficial or detail. But I feel now It is too superficial about fluid mechanics. I am sorry that not many fluid mechanics book for engineersexist. If you have ever listend about other Transport subject , you canfeel. But to some people who want truely basic concept about fluidmechanics , this book will be good friend with you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Product
This book is an excellent book for a Chemical Engineer final year student or Chemical/Process Engineer professional. It outlines the whole spectrum for Process Engineer design, from management skills for a project, preferrable site location, actual design of Process equipment/vessels, etc. This book is definately an execellent buy for a Chemical/Process Engineer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very complete and helpful guide for process design
It's a very complete guide for process design. It considers both standards and directives form US and EU. The main considerations about how to start and carry out the first steps on process design are very complete and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Catalog for options are available
I found this book be an excellent summary of equipment capacities. There a several tables showing ranges of equipment based on a particular process variable and pro/con tables to aid in your selection. What is in short supply are anything but basic design equations for equipment. This is also true for an old favorite of mine: "Handbook of Separation Techniques for Chemical Engineers" by Philip A. Schweitzer. This textbook is less current, may be more useful for basic design, though more narrow.

My suggestion is to have Schweitzer and Sinnott's book in the design section of your professional library. Be careful with this book because it is paperback.

Product Description

This book introduces the basic concepts of chemical engineering plant design and operation at a level understandable to graduate chemists and other scientists. It is aimed particularly at industrial chemists who find themselves working on chemical engineering-type unit operations. It is intended to be a "dip-in" reference, giving guidance on how to, for instance, design pumps, how to measure key process variables and how to use these to calculate the essential design parameters, such as heat and mass transfer coefficients, required for the design (and analysis) of typical unit operations (e.g. heat exchangers, distillation columns, reactors). Other issues, such as safety, project economic appraisal and process control are also covered. The book avoids derivations from first principles, simply providing the necessary equations and explaining and demonstrating their use.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book deals with the design and integration of chemical processes, emphasizing the conceptual issues that are fundamental to the creation of the process. Chemical process design requires the selection of a series of processing steps and their integration to form a complete manufacturing system. The text emphasizes both the design and selection of the steps as individual operations and their integration. Also, the process will normally operate as part of an integrated manufacturing site consisting of a number of processes serviced by a common utility system. The design of utility systems has been dealt with in the text so that the interactions between processes and the utility system and interactions between different processes through the utility system can be exploited to maximize the performance of the site as a whole.

Chemical processing should form part of a sustainable industrial activity. For chemical processing, this means that processes should use raw materials as efficiently as is economic and practicable, both to prevent the production of waste that can be environmentally harmful and to preserve the reserves of raw materials as much as possible. Processes should use as little energy as economic and practicable, both to prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels and to preserve reserves of fossil fuels. Water must also be consumed in sustainable quantities that do not cause deterioration in the quality of the water source and the long-term quantity of the reserves. Aqueous and atmospheric emissions must not be environmentally harmful, and solid waste to landfill must be avoided. Finally, all aspects of chemical processing must feature good health and safety practice.

It is important for the designer to understand the limitations of the methods used in chemical process design. The best way to understand the limitations is to understand the derivations of the equations used and the assumptions on which the equations are based. Where practical, the derivation of the design equations has been included in the text.

The book is intended to provide a practical guide to chemical process design and integration for undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemical engineering, practicing process designers and chemical engineers and applied chemists working in process development. Examples have been included throughout the text. Most of these examples do not require specialist software and can be performed on spreadsheet software. Finally, a number of exercises have been added at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to practice the calculation procedures. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What's Your Philosophy
What you think of what makes this book unique is what you think of the mid eightys publications of bodo linhoff on pinch technology. If nothing else the text doesn't cover fluid flow very well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, slightly ouf of date
The book is very useful introduction into the field of pinch analysis by one of leading researchers in the field and covers everything that currently is standard practice in industry. It is not up to date with newerdevelopments like the application of pinch technolgy to waste watermanagement or to mass exchange networks and to the automatic generation ofheat exchanger networks via mathematical programming.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This survey of the current state of the art in computational models for turbulent reacting flows carefully analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the various techniques described. Rodney Fox focuses on the formulation of practical models as opposed to numerical issues arising from their solution. He develops a theoretical framework based on the one-point, one-time joint probability density function (PDF). The study reveals that all commonly employed models for turbulent reacting flows can be formulated in terms of the joint PDF of the chemical species and enthalpy. ... Read more
