Editorial Review Product Description Structure-Borne Sound" is a thorough introduction to structural vibrations with emphasis on audio frequencies and the associated radiation of sound. The book presents in-depth discussions of fundamental principles and basic problems, in order to enable the reader to understand and solve his own problems. It includes chapters dealing with measurement and generation of vibrations and sound, various types of structural wave motion, structural damping and its effects, impedances and vibration responses of the important types of structures, as well as with attenuation of vibrations, and sound radiation from structures. For the third edition, the author fundamentally revised and newly organized the contents of the work. Nevertheless, the intention has been to preserve the style of the previous editions, namely to focus on the fundamentals enabling the reader to analyse further problems. Customer Reviews (3)

Editorial Review Product Description This classic text, an often-requested reprint, develops and explains the foundations of noise-induced processes. At its core is a self-contained, textbook-style presentation of the elements of probability theory, of the theory of Markovian diffusion processes and of the theory of stochastic differential equations, on which the modeling of fluctuating natural and artificial environments is based. Following an introduction to the mathematical tools, the occurrence and the properties of noise-induced transitions are then analyzed for rapidly fluctuating environments describable by the white-noise idealization. Subsequently, more realistic and general types of colored noises are considered. Appropriate practical methods for dealing with these situations are developed. The latter part of the book contains applications and experimental studies illustrating the many facets of noise-induced transitions. The following applications are considered in Noise-Induced Transitions: population dynamics, electrical circuits, chemical and photochemical reactions, non-linear optics, and hydrodynamical systems. |

Editorial Review Product Description Remedies are given for noise problems that a person is likely to find in his home, at work and at school, while traveling, and in the growth and development of his community. The remedies include noise prevention techniques and selection of quiet alternatives to existing noise sources.General principles for selecting quiet appliances are given.Ways of searching for the sources of noise and for determining the paths over which they travel to the listener are described.A detailed index is given for individual ways of looking for inherently quiet homes and travel accomodations are described. In a final chapter, there are suggestions for enlisting community help where large external sources of noise must be quieted, such as those arisseing from public utilities and public transportation. |

Editorial Review Product Description The reduction of noise emissions is a topic of increasing relevance in the public as well as for the economy. So far, the research has mainly concentrated on aerodynamic noise formation by airplanes, as well as other vehicles. The authors of this book go beyond this standard approach for noise reduction and explore the noise generation by combustion. They develop methods and design criteria in order to minimize the noise formation by combustion in general but for aircraft engines in particular. Hereby the research is focused on the noise formation and propagation in the environment directly linked to the combustion process, since today the understanding of these detailed formation mechanisms of combustion noise is still fragmentary. The book gives a detailed insight into combustion noise and the underlying physical processes combining experiments and simulations. |

A good starting point in acoustics Starting with an introduction to basic mathematical tools - both analytical (complexvariables, fourier analysis, asymptotic analysis) and numerical (FE/BEapproaches , ray tracing). The second part of the book is dedicated soundgeneration by unsteady sources and deals, amongst other issues, with flowand propeller/helicopter generated sound. The third part deals with wavemodification and such topics as sound-bubble interaction and nonlinearacoustics. To summarise, I think that this volume is a welcomed additionto the library of anyone with a serious interest in aero- or hydro-acoustics.
It is a useful tool book for someone who study acoustics. It is a useful tool book for someone who study acoustics. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Suitable for both individual and group learning, Engineering Acoustics focuses on basic concepts and methods to make our environments quieter, both in buildings and in the open air. The author?s tutorial style derives from the conviction that understanding is enhanced when the necessity behind the particular teaching approach is made clear. He also combines mathematical derivations and formulas with extensive explanations and examples to deepen comprehension. Fundamental chapters on the physics and perception of sound precede those on noise reduction (elastic isolation) methods. The last chapter deals with microphones and loudspeakers. Assuming basic mathematical skills including integral calculus, the book offers a short introduction on the use of complex amplitudes in acoustics. Moeser includes major discoveries by Lothar Cremer, including the optimum impedance for mufflers and the coincidence effect behind structural acoustic transmission. |

Editorial Review Product Description Results of experimental research on aerodynamic and acoustic control of subsonic turbulent jets by acoustic excitation are presented. It was demonstrated that these control methods, originated by authors, not only can intensify mixing (by acoustic irradiation at low frequency), but also notably ease it (at high-frequency irradiation). This research monograph presents the updated results of the authors supplemented by other investigations conducted in USA, Germany and Great Britain. The methods for the numerical simulation of subsonic turbulent jets under acoustic excitation are described in detail, and examples are reviewed of practical applications, including reduction of turbojet engine noise and acoustic control of self-sustained oscillations in wind tunnels. |

Editorial Review Product Description Acoustics, the science of sound, has developed into a broad interdisciplinary field encompassing the academic disciplines of physics, engineering, psychology, speech, audiology, music, architecture, physiology, neuroscience, and others. The Springer Handbook of Acoustics is an unparalleled modern handbook reflecting this richly interdisciplinary nature edited by one of the acknowledged masters in the field, Thomas Rossing. Researchers and students benefit from the comprehensive contents spanning: animal acoustics including infrasound and ultrasound, environmental noise control, music and human speech and singing, physiological and psychological acoustics, architectural acoustics, physical and engineering acoustics, signal processing, medical acoustics, and ocean acoustics. This handbook reviews the most important areas of acoustics, with emphasis on current research. The authors of the various chapters are all experts in their fields. Each chapter is richly illustrated with figures and tables. The latest research and applications are incorporated throughout, e.g. computer recognition and synthesis of speech, physiological acoustics, psychological acoustics, thermoacoustics, diagnostic imaging and therapeutic applications and acoustical oceanography.
